The Bb trumpet has a great jazz sense peeping out. (Phrasing and expression!) Utter delight to hear folks who know what they're doing! Master craftsmen all. And that's from a reed player!
I LOVE this version and have listened to it a thousand times! But I just don't like the care for the Bb trumpet's jazz influence in this song. He is an excellent musician and I really enjoy his efforts other Canadian Brass songs. Just my personal preference. Outstanding work by this group!
My professor in music said you can't go back and correct a mistake and if you try, you make two mistakes...all you can do is go forward. If you "correct" mistakes in practice all you are doing is PRACTICING THE MISTAKE. It is very hard to do, but when you make a mistake you simply go forward! That is all you can do. Music is an art in time and as Omar khayyam in the rubaiyat says: The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it. NEVER is this more true than the NOTE IN MUSIC!!!! Especially when playing with a group and there is this MENTAL METRONOME happening. The BEAT IS LOST FOREVER and the only way it can be done right is the NEXT TIME YOU PLAY OR PERFORM IT. What one must do is play the phrase at least ten times without the Mistake then then passage. That is the only hope. Music is Rote and not in the mind but in the fingers. You stop...well, an opera friend of mine was doing a performance and she and the pianist, both professionals had started an aria and they weren't QUITE TOGETHER and for a moment tried to "make it right". She simply stopped and said "WELL, WE BLEW THAT DIDN'T WE?" Of course everyone laughed. When one has a live performance...we are still human and not without flaws. Even in opera. The good news in an orchestra one can simply stop and come back in like a chorus...but when one is a soloist...you can't DO THAT. With tapes and recordings there are DO OVERS...with a live performance the only REAL DO OVER is to simply stop and DO IT OVER!!!
Billy Garvey ...violins can never sound like this man’s piccolo tpt. , because... they are fkin VIOLINS and operate in an entirely different UNIVERSE where the virtuosity depends not only upon your EARS, not only upon your little bitty FINGERTIPS but on TINY parts of your FACE, LUNGS, STOMACH and DIAPHRAGM! Apples and oranges, baby! sorry.
LOVE the Brandenburg quote at the end!!! Quite clever, and a bit of an inside joke for trumpet players. Supposedly the Beatles heard David Mason playing Brandenburg 2 on the BBC and that was the inspiration for the picc being in this song, they hired him on to record it.
Stu Art In this day and age that would be a co-write musical idea, an instrumental hook worth 10% songwriting credits....! Times have change they saved millions and his kids and grand children?!
Superb arrangement, superb playing. A treat for Beatles fans. Paul McCartney's tune elevated to the heights. And a cool wink to Bach at the end. Man, what an ensemble!
Canadian Brass traveled to our small town and workshop with our high school band members. Then that night they gave a small concert at our Church for the public. Great group.
Sounds great, Canadian Brass never fail to impress. I was at their concert when their Beatles album first came out with Jens Lindemann on piccolo, very fond memories.
It says something about songs by the Beatles that they can be played by such varied ensembles and still sound wonderful. Loved the playing on this. Piccolo trumpet was brilliant. Loved the freeness, the swing.
The Bach brandenburg concert no. 2 is a nice feature at the end of this arrangement, as it was the piece of music that inspired McCartney to put in the piccolo.
Muito bom, também temos O Quinteto Brassil, grupo formado por integrantes do Departamento de Música da Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB). Um espetáculo.
According to Wikipedia: "The Canadian Brass originally included "ensemble" in its name, but in 1971, the Hamilton Philharmonic's then-music director Betty Webster suggested that the quintet should be officially named the Canadian Brass." The video's title ought to be corrected.
That Picc is in A instead of Bb .Even through it is played a half a step higher that the Bb,it is much easier to play.Do not buy a picc unless you can play an F above the C.Also you'll have to read it down an octave.
Late comment but in case anyone is wondering, the players in the video are Chris Coletti on Trumpet, Ryan Anthony on Piccolo Trumpet, Achilles Liarmakopoulos on Trombone, and Charles Daellenbach on Tuba. I'm no sure who the Horn player is because I believe its Brandon Ridenour based off looks alone but he's a current trumpet player for them and I'm not very familiar with CB as is, I'm currently doing a hw assignment on brass quintets and I needed to know the members and this video unfortunately did not have the players listed in the description. So if anyone know who the Horn player in the video is for sure, please let me know so I can update this.
what bothers me is why the turnover is so high for this group. is there any better gig than being in the Canadian Brass. yet someone quits every other year or so
Do you have actual knowledge of their salaries or are you speculating? These guys can pull in $50 to $100K before expenses for a concert in a big hall and they don't have to pay a big road crew or sound man, so they probably clear at least 50 - 60% of that for most shows. I wold guess that all members are pretty well paid, although Dallenbach certainly gets the lion's share. He did start the group, after all. I think most of the guys that leave the group do so because of the amount of travel required more than anything else.
Strange, 2 of the originals gave up orchestra positions with the Hamilton Philharmonic to speculate on this new group. At least one said he was tired of counting rests.
1.3m views, but only 328 comments. That just proves that this performance left people SPEECHLESS. Amazing & remarkable musicians, the 239 downvotes are from people that can't play as well, much less appreciate the talent shown here! Many thanks for posting this!
Remarkable playing by all, but especially on the piccolo trumpet. Trust me, that little thing is really tough to play.
That's just impossible. Who ever tried to blow trumpet more than 3 days will know that is some crazy stuff to play
I don' t think it's helpful to think that it's tough to play it. A positive mindset is much better.
'Hernia tube' we used to call it back in the day(!)
Sergeant Gunny I’ve been playing it for 3,5 years now, still you need “a good day” to get the high notes ;)
SHUT UP!!!!!!!
that was some superb piccolo playing, like damn.

I don’t like jazz, all jazz does is ruins my chops so I can’t practice solo stuff as much
Hudson misses the one note and doesn't even flinch, gets right back on the wagon. That's true professionalism.

I can't even tell where you're talking about, it's that good.
Better make a mistake than to not play.
At first it sounds like he did it on purpose as well
Human mind is strange. 1000 brilliant Notes and one is bad. And now: what are we focussing on...?
The piccolo trumpet playing is beautiful. It's so clear it almost sounds like a violin
u saludo buenas

Violins sound awful compared to the Piccolo, that Piccolo is something else,
Ew orchestra player lol
Also brass has a much cleaner sound than any string insturments

Clark and Marcie
True story. 27 Pound and 10 schillings was paid to him by George Martin in December 1966 for quite a few hours work.

I spent most of this video admiring that tuba...... I am certain it costs more than my car did.
No that tuba probably cost only about $10,000
@@anonymousanonymous5769 "only", my car costed 2,000 haha
You can make a car with all that metal!

Incredible solo on the piccolo trumpet. At least as good as the original solo.
Paul's Trip Reports better
It looks like he's using a schilke, probably a 13a4a
The original ones intonation is a bit off
Much better than original.
@@keeganmclean2017 I agree
Such a beautiful and sophisticated arrangement! And he even managed to insert a little Bach at the end.
Es una de las mejores verciones que he escuchado. Saludos desde. Pto Cortes Honduras.
Superb arrangement, superb playing. A treat for Beatles fans. Paul McCartney's tune elevated to the heights. And a cool wink to Bach at the end. Man, what an ensemble!
For long years. Their member changed , but the sound of Canadian brass has been still brilliant. I love their sound.
Canadian Brass traveled to our small town and workshop with our high school band members. Then that night they gave a small concert at our Church for the public. Great group.
Lol
this is my favorite trumpet solo the Canadian brass as far as I can tell, i wish the french horn got to do more in the CB arrangements
The Best Music Will Never die ...
Sounds great, Canadian Brass never fail to impress. I was at their concert when their Beatles album first came out with Jens Lindemann on piccolo, very fond memories.
He makes it look easy
Absolutely beautiful! I had the chance to see them in Eugene, Oregon and it was one of the greatest concerts ever!!!!
Hermosa musica interpretada por este virtuoso conjunto canadiense ....

No one's going to mention the choice of foot wear!?

No
Probably got an endorsement.
very cool
Lol, I just noticed! Btw no one else like the comment, it should stay at the number it’s at now! 😂 cause it’s a pretty good one!
Magnificent! One of my favorite Beatles’ tunes too.
The Brandeburg final on the piccolo 😂😂. Really cool.
God in heaven...that piccolo player is beyond magic.
It says something about songs by the Beatles that they can be played by such varied ensembles and still sound wonderful.
Loved the playing on this. Piccolo trumpet was brilliant. Loved the freeness, the swing.
Masters of their craft. Fabulous arrangement.
This is astounding to watch - I grew up with Canadian Brass - and the only one I recognize is the Tuba Player!
かっこいい!

なんてこった!
Great arrangement, excellent ensemble work, outstanding piccolo trumpet player! I loved and enjoyed listening!
Canadian Brass!! They never disappoint; they are the ultimate in brass ensemble.
Everything the Beatles touched has become some sort of icon. Just like the couple of bars of the trumpet sound
For me the best song of the Beatles - it captures everything and not all of it music.
A very clear sound.
Not so common in brass groups.
Amazing!
hi bro
The arrangement is beautiful, musicians top-notch, I hope Paul McCartney listens to this one day, he'll be happy.
Thank for that nice video of the wonderfull brass version of "Penny Lane" performed really extraordinary good by the Canadian Brass Ensemble.
Brilliant arrangement! Brilliant playing!
Hey, Paul McCartney on trumpet (0.34)! :)
The Bach brandenburg concert no. 2 is a nice feature at the end of this arrangement, as it was the piece of music that inspired McCartney to put in the piccolo.
Wonderful to see Charles Daellenbach mentoring a new generation of brass maestros!
Bravo Beatles foi sensacional. Vcs são top demais, gostaria de conhecer, vem para o Brasil
Very good !! Especially the piccolo trumpet.! - Brill.
Fabulous version. The original artist was from the London Symphony I think and he got £27 for his awesome effort.

Oh. My. Gawd!!!!!! Amazing piccolo trumpet playing. Simply amazing.

2:39 mistake but handled very good
Well, it IS a cadenza, so he's got a little bit of license. LOL
Thoroughly enjoyed the November 2017 performance in First St. Andrew's United Church. Thank you.
Devastatingly beautiful!
and people say just the beer is good up there , eh??? well the brass is might fine too......thank you!!!

Salute to Sir Paul McCartney, the man who revived the instrument!
love the classical spin on an original rock tune
GOOD GRIEF compliments to that trumpeter who not only nailed the solo BUT in double time :o His embouchure must be tighter than a drum!
a perfect rendition!
That little thing gave me goosebumps.
Caleb is an absolute beast on that Schilke picc!
They performed in Panama City, Florida and it was incredible!
Gosh darn! These guys swing much harder than the Canadian Brass whose arrangements we used to play when we were about their ages...!

Superb mastery of the French Horn.

But not sure of marriage 😂
what bothers me is why the turnover is so high for this group. is there any better gig than being in the Canadian Brass. yet someone quits every other year or so
okonh0wp I'm confused on how you use turnover, what do you mean?
Do you have actual knowledge of their salaries or are you speculating? Guys leave for orchestra jobs, maybe they don't want to tour their whole life.
Strange, 2 of the originals gave up orchestra positions with the Hamilton Philharmonic to speculate on this new group. At least one said he was tired of counting rests.
Brandon actually is a nice guy. Chemistry is a big part of it, but I don't think he's a jerk. They still use some of his arrangements too.
Very, very Nice! Great Piccolo Trumpet work!
