The lower and upper steering column cover Is not available at my local dealership it’s been two years and I haven’t seemed to find one new I have a used one from eBay and it looks like crap any chance you have a link to were I can find this trim and possibly other interior parts
if you think the R32 is a lifetime keeper you should go ahead now and buy all those parts and store them away for the future. if you don't need them they will be a good investment. I've learned that when I order parts like this for my corrado to order twice as much as I actually need and squirrel the spares away.
I finally sold my mk4 after 18 years in 2019 and bought one of the mk7 TDIs. Watching you replace trim on your mk4 takes me back. There are times I really wish I hadn't upgraded, though I had just shy of 400K miles on it. It was time to upgrade for sure, but boy did I love that car.
The soft touch coating on some of my mk4 interior plastic items was so bad that it started pealing off. After pealing away as much as I could, I finished off the tenacious parts with isopropyl alcohol and blue shop towels. After removing the soft touch from the plastic trim, it now has a piano black finish. Much better looking, more resilient and a lot more affordable.
Brings back great memories. Bought the OEM aluminium trim for my MK4 Jetta 1.8T back in the day and had to go through most of this to install it. Highly enjoyable for me to do.
20:50. The "Secret Compartment" used to be one of the worst cup holders ever. Not only was it flimsy, but when in use, it blocked the upper push buttons and the radio controls. There was another one on the back of the center console for the rear passengers. I've taken several of them apart and I'm just stunned at the over engineering that went into them, all for nothing. VW got tired of replacing them under warranty so they deleted them altogether, replacing them with a blank panel in the rear and a useless door in the front. 18:12. The Mark 4 started with black struts. Went to silver struts in the later cars. 19:35. I take the metal parts off for two reasons. Sometimes I keep them for later use. The other reason is so that I can recycle both the plastic and the metal if they're separated.
I liked the old style back cup holder, it seemed to work better, and could actually hold *two* cups, unlike the revised/late Mk4 lower console setup of 2 in front + 1 in the back. Been wanting to Frankenstein the older rear cup holder setup with a late style lower console to regain it all. Passats and Audis of that same era, and much later, used that old front cupholder in the rear fold down arms, same cartridge. Worked better for the purpose, because there wasn't a radio to block/spill drinks on.
I pretty like the front double cupholder, it really does it's job, but... Yeah, it blocks the radio... The back for the rear passengers is less comfortable. And the plastic trims are a nightmare to reassemble; even if they are not broken, you definately would break them at the first time...
On my mk4 2.0L all the "soft touch" plastics were falling apart and sticky so I ended up taking it all apart and use throttle body cleaner as well as alcohol and got most of it all off, then sanded and prepped it for paint and it looks mint, good was to save some money instead of buying expensive brand new ones
Well trim does make your car look a lot better.. I usually pick trim up from the wreckers if it is in good condition. Same with rubbers/window scrapers/plastic fasteners. Sometimes depending on the part I don't even have to pay for it. :) Keeps me coming back for bigger stuff too. Oh btw Charles, the high pitch noise/clunk when I close my doors actually was caused by the horizontal crash tube not being fastened. I removed the screw months earlier in preparation for paint...... *slaps face*
Funny you mentioned the rattling ashtray driving you bonkers. Same issue with me and my Mk1. Mine bothered me so much I yanked it and built a cover plate to cover the hole in the dash, then added some gauges and electrical switches to it. Definitely more usable then just the previous rattle trap. The R32 is looking great! Betcha the all the new pieces make it feel less like a beater, and more like the econo-supercar it is. Always enjoy your content - keep it coming!
To refinish this 'soft touch' plastic, I've found that 90% isopropyl alcohol and a stiff nylon brush melts the old finish off. To re-coat, the SEM line of refinishing products works great. Plastic prep, adhesion promoter and SEM trim black work best to replicate the OEM finish.
As a DIYer, probably not worth it. If you remove radios with keys at any frequency, it's worth it. I have had to break trim to get radios out. LOL I am glad we don't have many radios like this anymore.
I have a creaky clutch pedal on my B9 A4 and don’t want to bring it to the dealer just for that (next service is 7k away). Thoughts on what it could be? Might it just need to be tightened?
FIRST first thing was disconnecting the battery. If you don't do that before disconnecting the seat harnesses you get an airbag CEL that you have to have VCDS to clear...
I got Chinese gas struts from Amazon for $10 each delivered. They fit perfectly and are still fine after three years. Much better than $92 OEM from the dealer.
Last year someone tried to steal my '89 740 and they busted quite a bit of trim while doing it. None of it is easy to find replacements for but the worst was the "rare" coin tray. That little piece of plastic sells for about $50 on eBay. smh...
Very nice work. A minor thing: the bolt retainer clips are like 20 cents each and I have seen many people especially mechanics struggle with broken ones trying to make the bolt stay in place, put glue etc. REPLACE THEM PEOPLE. This also solves rattle problems. Also, how you solve creaky front seats in "spirited driving"? I know it's the big springs at the bottom of the seat but how you fix them?
That storage cubby above the radio is interesting. I've never seen one before just now... I've seen just the trim panel w/out anything behind it and the cupholders in the early cars (which I retrofitted to my 03). What Mk4s was that originally installed to (R32 only?) or was it some rare option on all of them?
I love it. I was supergluing some felt onto my mk4 golf trim pieces last night where trim pieces meet, to stop creaking. After 16 years it's amazing that these things are still available new. Hey Charles, is there ever a time when VW decide to clear stock? Like, okay, it's been 20 years now, lets slash the price of all this mk4 stuff? Is there warehouses full of excess parts or are they still manufacturing them? Awesome video
look forward to see you showing about the ignition switch . i have a new one but i cant remove the old cables . Maybe there's a special trick or a special tool to take this out .
Humblemechanic, do you know if MK4 Jetta or Passat Front door panels are compatible with MK4 GTI? Normal golf door panels seem to small. Thanks you! Your the best VW auto channel!
I remember all this parts.. mu 1.8T was all worn out, after a stereo robbery.. noises were a nightmare, ultimately making me sell the car.. i loved the engine thought
Your R32 is increasingly becoming the most factory like of its kind in the U.S. while also increasingly getting back to near new condition. Smart on your part to keep it OEM or like OEM. You know better than most, the value of an '04 R32 in top notch condition. I wonder though; will there come a day when you disassemble the car and do a complete refurbishment?
Most of the "wood" trim pieces on my Jetta are cracked and broken. I really want to replace them, but they are either discontinued, extremely expensive, or just hard to get.
Can you do a video how can i restore my center console?, Its not longer available for Europe (discontinued) i cant order new one, and its very ugly at this moment due to soft touch peels off 🙄
There are 2 “full open” positions. One is comfort. This is about 80% open. That’s the position on the switch where the roof will go back auto. The other is full open. You have to hold the switch to make it gothere
@@HumbleMechanic Last year I bought a MK7.5 Golf R with the DSG. It's an awesome car! My first VW was a 1970 VW Fastback. It was a manual and the same car my dad taught me how to drive a manual on when I was 14. It even had EFI. Yes I'm old :)
Mr Charles I have a question which is not based on the above video. My question is that does Air-Fuel ratio of an engine varies with respective engine Compression Ratio or any other aspect.Like we have some world winning engines like A888 GTI which is a 2 litre engine but is much more fuel economy than it should be for a gasoline 2l.
I have a question, how do you feel about removing the heat shield under the hood? I noticed in the video when you cleaned the throttle body you didn’t have a heat shield on your GTI. I’m really just wondering if it will affect anything?
Thaddeus DeWyse it’s just there to reduce noise inside the cabin... if you concentrate real hard, you may notice a difference, but probably won’t. I took it off my b5.5 and drove without it for almost 3 years without issue; going on a year on my 1.8t mk4 as well. Any negatives are far outweighed by not having a hanging blanket over you with foam falling out every time the hood is opened.
Hey Charles , always enjoy your channel good info. My dipstick is leaking where it enters the oil pan I don't know if this is very common or not and I'm still under the powertrain warranty would something like that be covered under powertrain warranty. Thanks
Might wanna disconnect the battery before removing the seats in case of accidental airbag deployment. I would do it the way you did. But for those who aren't as experienced or for the sake of some jackface trying to sue it's probably better practice to have the battery disconnected and wait about 10 mins before disconnecting airbags connectors at the seats.
I did indeed enjoy this as I'm the kind of guy that pays attention to details. Part OCD, part 20 years in the army. Question. Did you ever get a chance to work on a Phaeton? If so, what's your impression? Are they worth pursuing in the used market?
Hey Charles, I can’t find a part number for those parcel cover hook-deals. One flew off into another dimension and I can’t find one now. Do they even sell them?
Watching this is giving me flashbacks of replacing the Heater core In the Mk4 I used to have.. Wasn't too bad for a heater core especially but it was still a pain.. And man, These plastics in the Mk4's just cough up blood and fall apart all the time don't they? Haha. Least its mostly cosmetic
Great vid as always Charles! 🎈 Love the super secret compartment! What's it big enough to for? It's a pop out cup holder on my euro spec one, as the US one has cup holders in the centre console I'm guessing
I have been watching a lot of your channel lately because I just got my very first VW, it's a 2012 Jetta SE 2.5. I have a question ❓❓. In your opinion your very best guess. What exhaust can I put on it that would sound a whole lot closer to the low deep rumble of a v-8 than the high loud tuner sound. Nobody get huffy because I'm totally down with this Jetta I'm loving it and had no idea the stuff you can do.
Hey, I gotta redo both A-pillar trims on my mk4, any clue on how to remove them? It seems like all those clips glued themselves together and it's a really tight fit.
They have a special clip you have to remove. www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/pillar-trim-installation-kit/t10078kt/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwn8_mBRCLARIsAKxi0GJ0UBtUI1qDPXTrhVcbTDp2i7AdtG5SdHZS5Pvu7MDa-SendteBCL4aAplgEALw_wcB
@@rendaddy_ Worth noting that the earlier Mk4 don't need this clip. In around 2002-3 they changed over to the curtain airbags, and this clip -IS- needed on both the A and C pillars. I've removed them using a 90-degree bent pick, the clips are two part, and the one piece can be pulled near straight out. Also... try to go to a salvage yard, find a mk4 with the same A-pillar as yours, and practice removing it, before you attempt yours. No one really has pictures online, or a video, because of the confined space. It's a learn by doing trick for removal.
Have a 20th AE GTI where someone installed a really crappy bag suspension system. I plan to yard it out and replace it with coil overs. Do have a recommendation for brand? I want to go just slightly lower than stock or stock height (which is lower already that stock gti height). I want the ride to be smooth, (it’s a daily driver and streets are bad) but either stock or slightly lower and adjustable. I’m willing to spend a little money but want a quality ride with some stance. My first quest would be H&R coil overs w/Bilstien...
Continued: is there something else? What it the stock ride height on a 03 20th AE? Don’t want to scrape or have issues in the city... so maybe standard ride height for that year and model? I had the H&R cup set up on another gti and didn’t like it. The rake was completely flat and it was kind of bouncy, not real bad but who wants that at all? - no good.
Dear Sir, i have a 2011 AUDI A4 1.8T tfsi. I am upgrading the software to stage 1 revo. Could you please tell me if getting a downpipe would increase my performance. Or is there another similar setup which i could go for instead? Thank you 🌈🌈🌈
OK Charles you have ruined me....Dropped off my daughter at a party, saw a guy in a VR6 that is a work in progress, we must have been talking vw for 15 min, asked him if he knew good mechanics in the area etc. Popped hoods talked mods and basic fixes maintenance etc. I asked him if he had ever seen, and before I finished he said "THE HUMBLE MECHANIC". He said you were the one that turned him from a Honda guy to a VW guy, as you turned me from Jeeps to VW. Yup now I am checking all VW's I see and striking up small talk. Just thought you should know your the Gateway VW guy. :)
To save money, lots of the trim can be found in a salvage yard too, at much less cost, but not as new. If you're patient, you could find most of the trim in good condition that way, and maybe have to spring for some brand new parts. Another source can be people parting out their mk4s that have been in accidents, or the engine/transmission died out. And some of the parts on a Golf, Jetta, or New Beetle are the same, regardless of doors on the body, like the carpet.
So on my 2001 GTI GLX the window switch panel doesnt wanna come out and i do not want to break it, i have new switches coming in tomorrow but i wanna take it off now to make it quicker later, any tips anyone? The pladtic housing around the handle is snapped in half at the back (only where you grab, where your pinky would be) but it feels like its clipped in or something, should i just remove my door card?
HumbleMechanic That sucks, i’m really glad i have them in my Bora Wagon (Jetta in your case), i use them mostly as a phone holder though.. I also installed the brushed alu pieces, so much nicer than the wood! On my car a couple of the same trim pieces are also busted sadly...
Mark Dowdy yeah, don’t know if Mk4’s/Jetta’s came with it in the US.. But like this: www.hamiltonautomobielen.nl/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/IMG_9993-1280x853.jpg
Excellent work sir, it's tough to maintain replace some of these parts when your not the first owner. That said $1000 for trim parts like that? Yeah no thanks I'll go to a local pick, 3rd party supplier and or maybe fabricate some panels with a 3D printer or out of some aluminum sheet metal. lol
Some of us outside the US are a bit luckier -- we had continuation Mk4.5s that had most of the same trim. But some of the really handsy locations, like the door grips, are hard to find used in good condition. Worth the wait, but I"m a dummy that has waited and hunted 2 years to find an OE radio with a code in the donor, to replace back into one of my Mk4s.
@@chrstphrr hah dang man I would have gone aftermarket at that point. I don't own a vw myself just love this channels content. That said my roommate has a mark v GTI and it's pretty sweet, I drive an 09 g37 for myself.
In my experience, not really. I had a b5.5 Passat for years without ever having VCDS or doing the TBA and it never had an issue, no matter how many times battery was disconnected and re-connected. Same with my mk4 ... I've actually even swapped ECUs without re-aligning right away and had no problems. Take that with a grain of salt though, because your mileage may vary ...
You could swap the hinged cover Charles has on certain kinds of cup holder frames - there are two styles I've encountered, and the pins/hinges are in different, incompatible locations. But... notice he has the late-style lower console with two cup holder spaces built in. That is a near direct swap in part on the 1999.5-2003-ish range that didn't have it. That top cup holder location is great for spilling stuff on your radio... but people have repurposed that cupholder space for custom made phone holders, etc.
@@HumbleMechanic thank you that would be a good one. The dealers here would likely charge quite a premium for the HVAC duct assembly supplied and installed...probably half the value of the vehicle as is I'd guess. It is an annoying failure, but with 18 years of service probably a reasonable life. Really enjoy your videos. They help me alot in keeping my wifes Typ 1J0 up and running! Much appreciated.

Can you do a video how can i restore my center console?, Its not longer available for Europe (discontinued) i cant order new one, and its very ugly at this moment due to soft touch peels off 🙄
I want to know if the sunroof can open all the way and if it does mine is stuck. It can only go up but never open
mine opens all the way
There are 2 “full open” positions. One is comfort. This is about 80% open. That’s the position on the switch where the roof will go back auto.
The other is full open. You have to hold the switch to make it gothere
Great video my V-Dub brutha. I don't own a MK4 but still enjoy the DIY videos.
Sweet!!!!
How many times all the dirt and dust hanging in the multimedia center console should be cleaned dude?
Mr Charles I have a question which is not based on the above video. My question is that does Air-Fuel ratio of an engine varies with respective engine Compression Ratio or any other aspect.Like we have some world winning engines like A888 GTI which is a 2 litre engine but is much more fuel economy than it should be for a gasoline 2l.
Thanks , super fast reply.
Please add me to your right-of-first-refusal buyer list (seriously). Keep up the good work!
What are the best oil filters make, used for skoda yeti 2.0 4x4
You checked the owners manual? It should tell you what filter to get
They have not mentioned it
Hello can we have video on the 2.0 16v abf engine about specs performance and a safe way to upgrade performance

frosty95xy Yes. This.
Hey Charles , always enjoy your channel good info. My dipstick is leaking where it enters the oil pan I don't know if this is very common or not and I'm still under the powertrain warranty would something like that be covered under powertrain warranty. Thanks
Most likely covered under warranty. But they have a specific list of parts covered, the failing part must be on the list
@@HumbleMechanic thank you for the reply , your connection with your viewers is why your channel is respected so much !
Would love to buy a car off you clean AF!
I think there is a waiting list. HAHAHAH
Where’s a good place to buy OEM parts online? I have a couple pieces I’m looking for that I just can’t seem to find.
Places like ShopDap can get them. I just got these at the dealer
Oh boy did I work on some Phaetons. Hahha. Amazing machines. You can get them super cheap now. But still fixing a $100k car
Hey Charles, I can’t find a part number for those parcel cover hook-deals. One flew off into another dimension and I can’t find one now. Do they even sell them?
The ones on the hatch or the one of the cover?
On the hatch, they’re like pegs. (On an A3 hatch)
Love the super secret compartment! What's it big enough to for? It's a pop out cup holder on my euro spec one, as the US one has cup holders in the centre console I'm guessing
The early MK4 had cup holders there. You can store like some gum maybe
@@HumbleMechanic ahhh! That's pretty cool and I thought as much hahaa 👍
Sweet! I’m a borla exhaust fan personally
This must have been a really satisfying repair. All trim parts that were pissing you off fixed 🙂
Yes and no. VERY happy some parts are fresh. Annoyed that some now don't match. HA
HumbleMechanic haha, I guess you’ll have to order the rest of the interior now 🙂
Hey, I gotta redo both A-pillar trims on my mk4, any clue on how to remove them? It seems like all those clips glued themselves together and it's a really tight fit.
They have a special clip you have to remove. www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/pillar-trim-installation-kit/t10078kt/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwn8_mBRCLARIsAKxi0GJ0UBtUI1qDPXTrhVcbTDp2i7AdtG5SdHZS5Pvu7MDa-SendteBCL4aAplgEALw_wcB
@@HumbleMechanic $50...what the shit
- no good.
the silver struts on the rear hatch are silver also on the black painted models and you can see the silver from certain angles and its really annoying
Looking forward to the illuminated vents mod that should have come standard lol
Why you don’t have cup holder on central console
That is so awesome. Thank you 🙏
Baking soda makes superglue harden instantly
Where can I find these trims I have a mk4 Jetta and wanna change out my tan trim
All this came from teh dealer. PNs are in the pinned comment.
@@HumbleMechanic completely missed that comment . Thank you very much and keep up the great work man , killing it with these videos.
@@chrstphrr that is true . The only issue is that the palstic tends to break easily when it's old
A 1000 pounds? Holy crap I´ve bought entire cars for less than that.
Me too!
yea.. My Passat cost about 500 US dollars in total to buy and make run
Does amuse me that you've done all this work upgrading the car but still have a factory radio. :D
I’ve since changed it. But I hate the new radio. Lol back to stock it will go
Am I crazy, or I'm missing fourth bolt on the Climatronic display in the video Charles?
Charles why didnt you replace the storage compartment above the radio with the cup holders?
Because I wouldn’t ever put a cup there anyway. Hahahah
@@HumbleMechanic ooooh ok then keep up the good work
So on my 2001 GTI GLX the window switch panel doesnt wanna come out and i do not want to break it, i have new switches coming in tomorrow but i wanna take it off now to make it quicker later, any tips anyone? The pladtic housing around the handle is snapped in half at the back (only where you grab, where your pinky would be) but it feels like its clipped in or something, should i just remove my door card?
If you do fix up the old parts definitely make a video on it
He could have bought a golf for how much he spent lmao
LOL I paid less for my MK3 than I did these trim parts.
HumbleMechanic That's just insane! But i totally get it :) At some point you just call it "investments" 😂
@@HumbleMechanic lmao same, i drive a 99 golf that i paid 11 hundred for but have put WAYYY more back into completely pointless stuff so i feel it.
No cupholders above the radio in the US?
On the earlier mk4 they had them. So silly. Haha
@@MrMathijs87 Wood?? My Jetta wagon just has some black plastic! 😆
Mark Dowdy yeah, don’t know if Mk4’s/Jetta’s came with it in the US.. But like this: www.hamiltonautomobielen.nl/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/IMG_9993-1280x853.jpg
Excellent work sir, it's tough to maintain replace some of these parts when your not the first owner.
That said $1000 for trim parts like that? Yeah no thanks I'll go to a local pick, 3rd party supplier and or maybe fabricate some panels with a 3D printer or out of some
aluminum sheet metal.
A high quality tint will go a long way to protect the new plastics.
You don't have to remove seats... But it helps.
These r the only vw id consider owning but damn they went up in value minimum 14k in Australia
It is all about feeling good... LOL
Charles, isn't it necessary to do throttle body alignment with VCDS after disconnecting battery? My $.02, haha...
You could replace the secret storage compartment for a pop out cup holder
You could swap the hinged cover Charles has on certain kinds of cup holder frames - there are two styles I've encountered, and the pins/hinges are in different, incompatible locations. But... notice he has the late-style lower console with two cup holder spaces built in. That is a near direct swap in part on the 1999.5-2003-ish range that didn't have it. That top cup holder location is great for spilling stuff on your radio... but people have repurposed that cupholder space for custom made phone holders, etc.
Would like to see the HVAC blend door replaced/repaired.
I will be doing this in the fall most likely
@@HumbleMechanic thank you that would be a good one. The dealers here would likely charge quite a premium for the HVAC duct assembly supplied and installed...probably half the value of the vehicle as is I'd guess. It is an annoying failure, but with 18 years of service probably a reasonable life.
Really enjoy your videos. They help me alot in keeping my wifes Typ 1J0 up and running! Much appreciated.
superglue, baking powder and a sharpie to blacken everything out has donewonders on my MK4, I've saved several plastic parts that way!
Were all those parts new parts or second hand?
All new stuff installed.
HumbleMechanic they still make new trim parts for the MK4? Are there any parts not still available?
There are some parts that are obsolete, but all this was available. Just $$$
