Same here. Not gonna get the same sound out of the short shells. Power toms for life. And for the record, you shouldn't be mounting ANYTHING on your bass drum.
Happy New Year brother! I think power Tom's came about because everything else got so much louder. Stacks of Marshalls became the norm. Power times were just louder. Then they finally figured out, hey, we can just put microphones on these things lol. Standard size drums date back to slingerland. You could thank them for what's considered the standard size now. My first kit was a Rockstar. I never want power times again!
YES YES YES!!! I have a 12x11 and 13x12 Tama Granstar II rack toms and they are magic Not only do they look way cooler, giving a huge, beefy vibe, but they sing. Oh, how they sing!
I keep hearing you say “Rocker Toms”. Rockers were a model of drums made by Ludwig in the 80’s and early nineties. They were Power Toms. 12x11 and 13 x 12. I have a kit from then and I just played them at a New Year show. I hope they don’t come back so I can be that old guy with that still plays them.
I just don’t know what to think about these power toms, as I have never seen them for real and have never heard them. They seek like they would really sound cool and I must admit that I think that white set you showed really looks so cool. I really understand your ergonomic dislike for them. I just wish I could try a set out for the fun of it.❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️
I personally do like both. The problem here is the trend brands tend to follow. And it’s sad because of that, I’ve never bought a brand new kit. I mean it’s 2025. As customers, we should be able to enter a drum store and really having the choice between those square/power or shallower toms. With all the different brands and lines existing, i’m sure there’s room for that.
Yes they will make a comeback , my main kit is a early 80s Ludwig rocker kit maple , so so so good . I have my Toms floating , so you can get it close and precise
I tell you what Bs and Ss, I’m not afraid of change, but if power toms come back I am not using those jawns!! The 80s was a brief period of innovation and interesting concepts, and while I appreciate it for what it is, I think there’s a good reason why it was a short lived era in drum trends, and why it hasn’t stood the test of time the same way those original 50s and 60s setups have. I’m not trying to hurt myself while playing drums brother, I think I’ll keep the shallow toms, low cymbals, and comfortable angles!
good lord please no 80s setups, in the new Phil Collins documentary they talked about how non-ergonomic 80 set ups were. I know a lot of older drummers in my area, and they're all stuck in the 80s with their setups, stick tricks, too many toms/cymbals and their "boomer beats"
I have that exact Ludwig kit (1:50) and converted the 14x12 tom to a floor tom, took off the tom mounts and bass drum mount and put the 12x10 tom on a snare stand. It works much better as a 1 up 2 down set-up.
I still have my power toms (12x10, 13x11, 14x12) that I got in the early 00s and enjoy them immensely. It's not as if they've entirely gone away. Companies do still make them, and there are still guys who play them. And it's not as though if they became mainstream again, traditionally sized drums would go away. The traditionally sized drums were still widely available and played all throughout that era.
My drumsets like a mix I got a pearl export 9 peice Rack toms: 8x7 10x7 12x8 13x9 Floor toms: 14x14 16x16 Kick drums 22x18 22x18 The only really shallow drums are the first like 3 rack toms maybe 4 idk, I honestly think that the power toms would look better like that white tama kit lars had, yeah u couldn’t see him well but I loved how it looked. For me personally bigger is better but that’s because in my opinion it just gives me more range for tuning I’d think, and I’ve played on kits with power toms before and they sound great, again in my opinion. If they make a comeback it would surely be interesting to see how it develops into people’s drumsets especially bigger bands you know
It's possible they might come back. They could work if you have them on a tom stand so that you can lower them down for ergonomics but keep the power tom visual look. Other than that, I can't really see them being much of a thing.
I had a Ludwig deep Tom double base kit in 1969 Tiger stripe and the way I look at it. It’s not the way they look. It’s the way they sound those deep. Tom sounded great.
I think if power toms were set up better than they would look a lot more aesthetically pleasing. I mean look at Gabe Helguera's 1999 Ayotte drum kit. That thing had massive toms, but the kit looked sick!
Basically, the 12x12 is a square tom. Pearl Custom Z, CZX, Sonor Phonic, Signature, had those sizes. At the same era late 80s early 90s . Power toms are the 12x10, like Yamaha had in the old 9000, 8000, Rock Tour, Maple Custom, Recording Custom, Stage Custom, Pearl Masters, MMX, MLX BLX. Tama had the 12x11 on Artstar, Granstar, a "hybrid" size between the square 12x12 and the power 12x10. I love power toms, i think they sound the best. As much depth as it needs, and it's not a pain in the ass to set them up as a square size. I have the standard sizes, 12x9, because when i bought my kit, only those were available back in 2008. As I said i love them and i really hope they'll be back soon.
Tama used to make a 11" diameter tom- 10" deep, part of Artstar and Granstar series. I had 11/13/15 and I wish that was still available. Beats the 10/12/14 that is difficult to get to sound beefy for rock. Power toms need to come back for more options.
I could rock some power Tom’s with a 20 in kick. The deep rich tones from power Tom’s are incredible! Just depends on someone’s needs or personal taste. I’ll admit they are a hassle to position but you could make it work with some compromises
OMFG I hope power toms never come back! You're exactly right--the ergonomics are trash. I bought a Pearl BLX kit with power toms in 1989 because that's all the drum companies were making at the time unless you custom ordered. And while it sounded great as I expected from a well made pro kit, I absolutely despised it because the toms sat up too damn high over the bass drum and it was just a pain in the ass to play the full kit. I'm 5'9" and I had to angle the toms to extremes because I couldn't sit higher and play comfortably. I ended up playing it mostly as a 4pc kit without the 13" x 11" tom so I could put the 12" x 10" tom lower and more to my left. Hated and struggled with it for years until I finally replaced it in 2002, whereas I would still own and play it today if it just had standard size toms. And BTW, the notion that power toms are louder is complete BS and fiction unsupported by physics. They're NOT louder than standard toms of the same diameter, shell construction, head selection, and tuning. They just have a different tone, like speaking through a cardboard tube. The "louder" power tom myth was a marketing gimmick started by Tama in the early '80s with their "X-tras" sizes, and I was so glad the trend died in the '90s. Let it stay dead!
I’ve always wanted to try a power tom set, but I’m concerned about the placement of the tom. I agree that it might eventually become popular again. Ultimately, it depends on the sound produced by the larger drum and whether artists decides to endorse them.
I once owned a Tama starclassic maple. Made in Japan. 22x18 10x9 12x10 14x13 16x15. Crazy good sounds. I wouldn't go deeper though. Also I would go with a 22x15 bass drum. I like playing with virgin kick drum.
Best sounds of the 80s, I have a set of tama super stars deep sound like Journeys sound the sound a good as Sonar’s. Especially my 14 x 8 snare drum. Also can’t play them like marching drums ( flat down) need to angle them but I love them. Great overview of different types of drum set ,over time
Man, I'm tellin' ya, watch Triumphs "Fight The Good Fight" video at the US Festival and tell me you don't just love the tone of Gil Moore's concert toms. Maybe talk about that some time? Just run those wide open with no gates on them and let'em sing. Perfect...
the question shouldn't be depth, it should be diameter. though the 70's toms were shallow, you got a 12" / 13" / 16" configuration with every set. nowadays, you cant get a 5 piece without getting a 10" / 12" / 16" configuration. if power toms are to come back, I'll bet it'll be a hybrid of 10"x10" / 12"x11" / 16"x16" Tama just made a reissue of their Superstar kits and opted for the 10/12/16 setup. would be interesting to see companies play with the sizes a little
Then the 90s were about square sizes yamaha was notorious for it 10x10 12x12 14x14 short stack toms i remember dating back in 2005 with the UBER DEEP for no reason kick drums with the emergence of “custom” drum companies
The 80s style drum kits look cool, but they are ergonomically atrocious. These deep toms are super limiting in terms of possible setups, everything has to be spaced super far apart or placed at a weird angle to make it fit,... That's why I think that they probably won't make a big comeback.
awesome content.. was thinking of the same thing .. I like the shorter toms now, but I wish they still do the 22 x 20 bass drum, the one they do in the hyperdrives initial release .. I just love the looks, dont care about the boominess
I’ll never go back to power toms. I hate having to sit higher to play a power Tom kit. The largest diameter rack on my kit is a 13”. There’s a bigger difference between a 10X13 and a 12X13”.
tama had the hyperdrive toms like 15 years ago. super shallow. DW had pancake toms too. i think it works fine for racks, but floor toms not so much. keep the racks shallow, the kicks deep, and the floor toms standard.
I have a Ludwig maple kit with powertoms (10x10) (12x10) and 22 inch bass drum. If you ever rate my kit youll see I was actually able to get them really low with the way I set them up and they’re ergonomic. I also mainly play Pantera and older metal so they work really good for me.
We live in a golden era of drums in this day an age. Quality of drums and the choices is incredible. Power toms are just not ergonomic, unless you're a giant. DW makes a 12x8 tom that has just as much power, if not more, as a 12x12.
We gen-x can dig, but these old kits typically have the 12 and 13 inchers up top, no 10, kinda frustrating IMO. I don’t think they’re versatile enough for a huge comeback.
I think shallow toms came back because the depth makes sense in relation to the diameter. Power toms for example 12x10 were looking cool, square sized toms 12x12 like Sonor or Yamaha made, looked even cooler but had a little OIIING in their resonance, the deeper the shell, the louder it became. AND they hid the drummer! And like you said, they must be positioned much too high! Even bass drums 14 deep sound more punchy than 16 or 18 deep. It was all just for show. The sound of classic sized drums is way better. A classic sized floortom would be 16x16 right? Why are many 16 floortoms only 14 deep nowadays? Because it makes sense! - I wish you a happy new year too brother! 🎤💥🤛... ( P.S. the 12" Ludwig in the thumbnail was 11" deep 😉 - according tho the 1984 catalog )
I stand at an absolutely TOWERING 5 foot nothing. I hope they make it an option if they do come back. I wanna still be able to buy new kits and be able to play them. I am too short for power toms. I think Pearl and Yamaha have it perfect right now. Short rack toms and long Floor Toms. I'm not saying other sizes are wrong but I don't like power toms, especially cuz I'm short.
Why did rack toms get shallower and floor toms stay square? and then people struggle to "tame" floor toms with taoe and moongell and cottonwool. They should just make floor toms, 15/11. 16/12. 18/14. Why is an 18" bass drum 18/14 and a floor tom 18/16?
At last Floor toms will always be their territory…love them but I am 5’7 so I cannot reach them well….so, 9 and 10 deep inchers for me it is. PS. “BuT dW mAdE tHe F.a.S.t ToMs”
DW did some analysis back in the day and came up with F.A.S.T. toms. Not so much "fast" as in speed but, fundamentally - accurate - sized - toms (and bass drums). 10x8, 12x9, 13x10, 14x11 or 14x12, 16x13 or 16x14, 18x16, 20x18, 22x18, 24x18. I've played most of these sizes, and they sound just right to me.
I mean maybe, I like the middle to middle deep Tom’s. Like 12X9 and 12X10 are good, shallow Tom’s are weird to me. Deep bass drums I always can’t stand. I think they look dumb, harder to move the air, and just sound bad. I like 14-16 deep. Another thing I don’t understand is how a kit went from 12/13/16 or 13 or 14/16 to 10/12/16. That 4 inch difference between the rack and floor creates too much of a pitch difference. Like 12/14/16 perfect down the Tom’s tuned separate but makes sense. I also can’t stand a 14 floor. That is a rack Tom the low rack Tom. 16 is a good floor size. The trend of smaller drums is just weird.
Power toms where sorta necessary in the 80s, gotta think of the massive venues bands played. Guitars where louder and drums had to compete with that as well. Plus, a massive kit on stage looks sick. Stage presence needs to make a comeback, bands are too boring nowadays.
not going to lie i have been wanting to build a vinnie paul replica kit and you just can"t do that with out power toms, or at least the drum makers should make those sizes available if you want them lol.
I don't think these depths will comeback just for the fact of cymbal placement . I think people may get these depths just for nostalgic purposes and maybe for youtube comparison videos. That's just my opinion.
I think ergonomics have taken precedence over deep rich sound. I don't think it's coming back. Like, old steel panel V8 classics aren’t ever coming back but the B’s and S’s that like em, like em old anyway so… (mic slap) F$%K IT!!
i went for early 50's radio kings and a brass ludwig super. i don't really like rocker toms . i feel like where ludwig and gretsch are at with it and dw bringing back slingerland. it's kinda obvious what's happening. barton, c&c, standard they've been doing this like you said. people are starting to hear what american quality sounds like again. i feel like it really started around 2014 2015. when you started seeing less dw and tama even though it's still omnipresent. dw saw the trend happening that's why they bought slingerland. we're gonna see less tama and marshalls and more ludwig gretsch slingerland with gibson gretsch and fender dominating guitar and bass.
Kick drums are going to go away because you can just use kick pads and triggers now. Power toms can come back too because they won't need to be angled to accommodation the kick drum.
@BradsGonnaPlay yeah I wasn't being entirely serious lol, but the kick pads are a thing. Especially with extreme metal bands that are using triggers for their bass drum anyway.
@@tihell1 I figured, I thought your comment was very humorous. Cuz I have played with bands that use the kick pads with a “normal sized” setup, so i can vividly picture how it would look if they had a row of huge rack toms 😂
Power toms were killed by advancing microphone technology, and I say good riddance. Hate placing them, hate looking at them and the "deep, rich sound" to me is an overbearing drone, vs the thwack of F.A.S.T./ traditional toms
@@InzidenzPanik people who think “bigger drum=fatter tone” really have no idea the feats of modern drum engineering. The Questlove kit (I think it’s called breakbeat? I’m not googling it) has one of the FATTEST sounding rack toms I’d ever heard, and if you know about that kit, you know it’s marketed for children/young beginners because it’s super small. But that 8” rack Tom sounds bigger than any 55 year old lugging one of these old relics into one of my venues.
Power toms are fine, I think your problem is specifically with oversized wanker-toms on an 8+ piece drum kit. And you’re right, they make the drum kit look ugly as sin. I can’t stand toms that are mounted over the kick drum. It’s very Spinal Tap to me- a parody of what a real drum set should be. That being said, if you use a 4 piece kit with 14x14 and 16x16 toms, THAT is a *powerful* drum set.
comeback? at my house, those power toms never left....
Same here. Not gonna get the same sound out of the short shells. Power toms for life.
And for the record, you shouldn't be mounting ANYTHING on your bass drum.
Only for one up kits, I for some reason can't position two to save my life
Happy New Year brother! I think power Tom's came about because everything else got so much louder. Stacks of Marshalls became the norm. Power times were just louder. Not only do they look way cooler, giving a huge, beefy vibe, but they sing. Oh, how they sing!
I never really liked seeing the drummer behind a puny kit, especially for a more hardcore type of music. Not gonna lie, at least me, we ugly
I keep hearing you say “Rocker Toms”. Rockers were a model of drums made by Ludwig in the 80’s and early nineties. They were Power Toms. 12x11 and 13 x 12. Power toms for the win
Nicko McBrian still use them
Dude.... I just converted my 14x14 FT to a rack tom this morning!
I actually combined a moder kit with power toms and it gives a awesome sound.
Power toms will never come back because the cost of manufacturing will make them way too expensive for everyday use.
I just don’t know what to think about these power toms, as I have never seen them for real and have never heard them. They seek like they would really sound cool and I must admit that I think that white set you showed really looks so cool. I really understand your ergonomic dislike for them. I have some on my first gen stage custom kit and they sound killer mic’d un mic’d! I like both traditional and power toms.
Yes they will make a comeback , my main kit is a early 80s Ludwig rocker kit maple , so so so good . I have my Toms floating , so you can get it close and precise
Make a comeback? Did they ever leave? Not in my house they didnt. You'd know that if you'd review my kit.🤣
😂
I stand in whatever sounds good in a record/stage with good song
The answer is yes.
Big Fat Bottom Toms!

Gong Drum Set!🤘😎👍
Power tom’s from the 80’s& 90’s.Ludwig kits I like the big sounds thay produce.
I HAVE A 15 INCH RACK TOM AND 18 INCH FLOOR TOM JUST LIKE GROHL
Same, but an additional 13" rack tom and a 26" BD
I wouldn’t be surprised if the shorter toms are a decision based on cost cutting rather than just style. Less wood used per kit.
if my rack tom was a power tom, the stand it sits on wouldn't be able to go low enough. you would hate it
I bought some of Joe’s clothes. They go good with Adidas.
I have a Ludwig maple kit with powertoms (10x10) (12x10) and 22 inch bass drum. If you ever rate my kit youll see I was actually able to get them really low with the way I set them up and they’re ergonomic. I also mainly play Pantera and older metal so they work really good for me.
12x12**
We live in a golden era of drums in this day an age. Quality of drums and the choices is incredible.
Power toms are just not ergonomic, unless you're a giant.
DW makes a 12x8 tom that has just as much power, if not more, as a 12x12.
We gen-x can dig, but these old kits typically have the 12 and 13 inchers up top, no 10, kinda frustrating IMO. I don’t think they’re versatile enough for a huge comeback.
My kit is an SQ1 20,14,12 pretty shallow sizes, kick is 16 deep.
Those ‘80 were shite then, shite now.
i still use a kit with 8x7 10x9 12x11 etc. and a 22x14 bassdrum
Have fun carrying that crap.
Right in the middle is the sweet spot visually... 10x6, 12x8 etc. looks like little kid drums to me.
I have an old pearl, with power rack toms, the drum is pretty i love my drumset, but is uncomfortable to find a nice angle for the rack toms
They look better ig
At last Floor toms will always be their territory…love them but I am 5’7 so I cannot reach them well….so, 9 and 10 deep inchers for me it is.
PS. “BuT dW mAdE tHe F.a.S.t ToMs”
Square sizes look great one up, one or two down. Mounted on the kick, not so much.
My arms are still tired from playing square toms in the 80s.
John Good being gimmicky for gimmick’s sake
I think you mean DW did some marketing, not analysis.
@@TC-lk2ev Marketing analysis? 😋
Concert toms came back! Power toms will follow but it won’t be the norm though… then the extra long bass drum lengths will come back.
Bring back the mid-late 2000s hilariously deep bass drum hoops
@ yes with them short stack rack toms! Off set lugs! Damn I miss Orange County drums
For cost purposes they will never come back.
Standard Tom depths and bass drums no deeper than 16” are best. 8x12” are the only 12” anyone needs.
I’m too short to play them. I’d have to angle them so much, they’d look ridiculous and you’d give them a bad rating.
I always hate the old long lug connections, and having toms way too high. Shallower toms have a wider tuning range and better definition.
I hope not. They look atrocious
Agreed. Pointless
Hope not for me personally I’m 61 and like my toms low now ! lol
And here's me wanting short stack toms so I can place them lower and more ergonomically.
Kick drums are going to go away because you can just use kick pads and triggers now. Power toms can come back too because they won't need to be angled to accommodation the kick drum.
If any drummer used this setup I’d be laughing the entire set lmao
Having fat sounding drums for the sake of having fat sounding drums is pretty much a glorified gimmick.
Booooo
Oh god no, i hope not! Looking like floor toms placed on the racks.. keep that shit in the past.
I simplify can't play those power toms comfortably. I had that same tama kit when I was 16 and was never a fan.
Don't you wanna look COOL bro? 🤣
I think they look pretty badass but don’t think they’d be comfortable to play on.
No it’s not coming back cos it hides the drummer from view. No one wants that.
You can’t mount them lmaoooooo
No. 👎
I love finding power tom kits cheap because I can chop them myself 😂
