I pinky promise that 99% of the time, everyone else is genuinely not looking and judging. The spot light effect really is a cognitive bias, because we are the centre of our own world, we tend to over inflate our presence in everyone else's. i'm starting to realise how much of a lack of indentity i have. i'm constantly taking personality tests, clinging onto labels and categorising myself, latching onto observations other people have made about me. Its all because i genuinely don't know who i am, i never have. I cant pick out any aspects of my personality, i cant tell you a fun fact about myself, it feels like every day i wake up and see someone new in the mirror. i'm always so hyper aware of how people perceive me and what other people think its so suffocating! i just want to know what its like to be secure in myself and who i am as a person.

    • @Lara-on4kd
      @Lara-on4kd 2 месяца назад +84

      I think seeing someone new in the mirror everyday sounds kind of beautiful when you think about it, since you can reinvent yourself everyday. idk this might be cheesy but you literally can just try versions of yourself every single day and pick out the things you like the most about them. personality isn't a fixed, still thing, so it's quite alright if you don't know a ''fun fact'' about yourself. you're not a zoo animal, you're a person. you're allowed to change and evolve and discover yourself, however long that takes. I sincerely hope you grow more confident over time, it takes a lot of effort though! best of luck 🍀❣

    • @lifaen
      @lifaen 2 месяца назад +27

      You might be just a step further, cus I can say what I like, what I like to do, what is my personality, fun fact about me, but at the end, all of these things are just things my brain randomly picked up because I...lived? And experienced things and my brain was like "okay, now I like this" or "now I really hate this" and if you think about it long enough, it's just kinda random. And I believe that it's not just me, I think the people who feel like they have so much personality, are just people, who are very sure of things they like or dislike or how they react to things...and they actively refuse the fact, that all of this is kinda random.
      Maybe it would help you to journal about things you enjoy or don't enjoy or what was your reaction to something that day or something, I think personality is basically what you've experienced in life and if anyone finds that boring about you, it's just their view. Very subjective view.
      And I don't wanna say the basic "don't care about what others think", I also tend to think about it a lot, but...some people will find you interesting and some just won't, cus it doesn't resonate with their personality.
      Sometimes we see so many diverse people on the internet, that we forget that even the little thing like how much sugar you put in your coffee is what's part of your personality.
      Or maybe I just wrote bunch of nonsense cus I don't know what personality and identity means and also my english is bad.

      I’ve been there before a few years ago and it felt really scary! What helped for me was realizing nobody truly knows themselves (philosophically and literally) and the only things that are actually unique to me are how I see the world. Social media also warped my brain into associating people with their aesthetics and I would frequently check myself against theirs which was terrible. Ultimately, you learn life is about discovering and trying your best to be the kind of person you’d like to see in the world. I also had to spend months literally learning to get to know the parts of myself I was repressing and loving myself truly as is. It was a lot of hard work and therapy but now I live a life that brings me security and safety and welcomes joy but also sets boundaries on my triggers. It’s a lot of balance but I’m wishing you the best in finding what that looks like for you!!

    I read a nice poem once about how humans, in nature, weren’t meant to see their own reflexion. Except in water but even like this, it’s not clear and exact. Water is like Nature’s way to be like « hahah you thought you could ». So imagine … today’s world goes COMPLETELY against that. I’m not saying that it’s inherently bad to have mirrors and pictures and be exposed to what we look like, but there’s a balance and nowadays we’re definitely stepping into an extreme.

    "Returning to what you liked as a child" exactly what I've been doing in the past 3 years or so with fashion. Even thought to me it's more like what I liked as a teenager but I didn't feel confortable expressing it.
    When I was in school I used to wear what all the other girls my age were wearing; I won't deny that, all in all, there's nothing wrong with that style, I liked dressing up like that, but I also felt so limited with other styles and color and clothes I liked that I was afraid to wear. Because I wanted to fit in!! And wearing fun colors and sometimes prioritizing comfort with sweatpants or hoodies wasn't in the picture for my teenage self.
    After the pandemic I found the strenght to just do what I want, as well as overcoming my fear of being perceived as "childish" for the way I dress. I'm tired of black clothes!! I wore them my entire teenage years, I want to have fun with pastels and patterns!!!

    I feel like our generation (gen Z) is oddly obsessed with our looks. I'm guilty of this towards myself. But people won't let others live there lives wearing what makes them happy. Doesn't full liberation include being ourselves? Not being judgmental like Boomers and Gen X? You only get this life, stop obsessing about how others feel about YOUR life. You can't please everyone, but you can learn what makes yourself happy. And it is so true people are too busy thinking about themselves to think bad things about you. And those who are observing usually aren't even judging. People who put you down are only doing it because they are so self absorbed in their own insecurities, and are projecting.

    for any teen girls or anyone else that applies, it really does get better. i spent the majority of my teen years being wildly insecure about how i look and constantly comparing myself to people at school and people i see online. i would always think "when im older im going to get this cosmetic surgery and this one and this one too," not that theres anything wrong with getting those things done but it severely impacted how i viewed myself. i think everyone will have so much insecurity during those years but beyond that it does get better, i feel so much more comfortable with myself and how i look without feeling the need to change drastically.
    u really do start to love urself the more that u grow up and its so wild to me how big those problems seemed when i was 16. i didnt settle or just grow accepting that i will always look the way i look, i genuinely began to see myself in a better light after spending time away from social media and focusing on having a better, healthier mindset. yes, there are prettier girls than me and i will never attain their exact look without thousands of dollars spent on cosmetic surgery, but thats okay and its not the end of the world and i surely won't let that impact my happiness.
    if u dont take a lot of photos of urself because of ur looks, please start to. im so sad that i barely having any photos of myself when i was in high school and middle school because i was too insecure about how i looked in them. theres so many good memories i have in my head that i dont have pictures of just because i didnt think i looked pretty enough back then.

    One important thing Nicole didn't mention: It's a normal part of being young and growing up! In your early twenties, you are really still developing, including building confidence, learning who you are, and learning that happiness is more important than looking your best as much as possible. It's normal to feel insecure and look for approval externally when you haven't had the time to find yourself and grow internal approval yet. So don't despair if you're young and haven't learned not to think too much about yourself, as Jermima said, just yet! You'll get there. :)
    I'm 28 now and let me tell you I spent my early 20s exactly like this, always looking to learn how to look "right" - which really was trying to look socially "acceptable", i.e. fit the prevalent beauty standard, because patriarchy communicates to women that you need to fit the beauty standard to a good enough level to receive basic respect, friends, and career prospects. I was so anxious about my looks, I often wouldn't leave the house when I felt ugly. I was so insecure, looking for others' approval constantly, and unsure of who I was in general, that I even thought I had BPD when I was 19/20. Turns out I did have some emotional trauma to work through, but other than that, I was just young and still at the beginning of figuring things out!

    the best way to gain confidence is to gaslight yourself, truly fake it until you make it. Do the makeup that makes you feel pretty, wear the clothes that make you feel cute, and use the products that make you feel clean and then you walk out of your house with your chin up.

    I’m learning in my psych class rn that if you can’t influence something, don’t focus on it. Don’t let it take control of your whole life. And if you CAN influence something, do it. But stop worrying about the circle of concern that you can’t influence. An example being how other people see you. You can’t fully influence how others perceive you. Even if you try to, there’s still going to be someone out there that hates you. That doesn’t like you. And you can’t change that. As someone with OCD as well this has helped me create a slightly better headspace.

    I stopped shaving my legs my senior year of college, and it was the best decision I ever made for myself. I genuinely hated doing it, and it always took forever. I only started shaving my freshman year of high school because it was expected of me and other girls always made comments throughout middle school because I wasn't shaving. It's been a decade since I stopped, and still, every spring, I get that stupid little voice in my head that people are going to judge my unshaved legs, and I have to squash it out each time. The best advice I can give is to try to stop thinking so much about how others perceive you. I've found most people are far more concerned with thinking about how others perceive them than they are in actually perceiving others.

I’m 29 and I remember looking at facial shape charts, how different liner changes your face and talking about lifting your tongue up (mewing) at like 14-15… so like 2008!! It’s exhausting. The answer is: there is no objective answer. Just do what you like and work harder on being a good, interesting person and kind to others, a positive addition to your community etc etc.

    Honestly, I think tiktok's end will allow ppl, esp da grlies to finally address serious body issues, perception of beauty, eurocentrism, etc. But I also have a feeling that won't happen because capitalism thrives off insecurity and hyper-individuality.
    Also, as a painter, using color theory on an actual person vs a canvas always sat wrong with me. Obvi, there are colors/tones that stand out better on a skin tone vs another. But it's highly subjective because color is infinite. I feel like that trend is a passive/sinister way of telling people they need to spend more on unneccesary products and by extension appeal to western beauty standards without them even knowing. Like why must we overrationalize if person A looks better in red than Person B because they got XYZ features. Just let them both wear red (which there are hundreds of reds to choose from) and let em be confident with it instead of putting Person B down.
    Anyways, really enjoyed the topic, it's a much needed conversation!

    I'm a colour expert, went to uni to study design and majored in pattern design and fashion illustration, and then also got really into cmyk screenprinting during and so can also share some really interesting facts about how colour actually works (like in the eyes and brain and how colour blindness occurs etc. Colour theory, colour composition) And, genuinely, I think the season colour stuff is all bullshit for the most part. The colours you like and the way it plays off of other colours and whethet you like it or not is hugely down to the associations you individually make. Like I love bright colours because I got really into decora and harajuku fashion as a kid, but for another adult they might just see it as really childish and mature, people aren't a monolith, and not everyone is all gonna agree that suddenly if you're in your season colours, that you look good. The colour seasons are a fad that don't really mean anything. And the thing is, if you use it and it helps you become more experimental with colour then great! BUT otherwise, leave it out. Don't be using it to judge other peoples style. If you looked at any real stylist for celebs or anyone really, they're not paying attention to these colour seasons and they're the actual professionals.

    I read "I Thought it was Just Me (But it Isn't)" by Brenee Brown a few years ago and learning about my inherent shame and that EVERYONE HAS IT was one of the most powerful things. When I start to get in my own head too much, I remind myself that literally everyone is thinking about themselves the way I'm currently thinking about MYself, which means no one is thinking of me at all. It helps quiet my inner critic and allows me to focus more on the moment than I otherwise would if I were worrying about how people are perceiving me.

    This isn’t necessarily from the perspective you’re talking about, but I’ve noticed this in conversations with people. People will ramble on about themselves at length, pause after like 15 minutes to ask how you’re doing and then go right back to talking about themselves. People talk to each other like they’re posting on social media. Nobody actually engages with each other mutually anymore. Just another way people think way too much about themselves. I do agree, though that a lot of the things you’ve highlighted here are very superficial and we could also stand to think about them a lot less.

    I love your perspective! I knew there would be people who are waking up to all the vanity that’s been happening online. It was honestly healing to watch. I think thinking about ourselves too much came from the conditioning we got from our parents, friends, teachers, boys, online, etc… I find it soooo exhausting too to constantly focus on how I look or what everyone thinks of me. How about we focus on our inner beauty (e.g. intelligence, talents, ideas, values, sense of humor, degree of selflessness, and whether or not we’re serving humanity). I think we looks max due to fear or embarrassment and fear of rejection because no one likes being judged so we retreat to playing it safe by looking as conventionally attractive as we can instead of embracing our individuality. The right people will love us for all of us, not just for our looks. We might as well wear whatever makes us feel good and matches our personality instead of fretting over what looks good on us.

The right makeup to flatter my face, the right clothes to flatter my body, the right colours to flatter my skin, the right workout to snatch my waist, and even the right study method to make me the most productive (yet to be found, currently stuck in a cycle of procrastination teehee). I've always been a perfectionist which was fine when I was younger, to some extent, but it feels like it's destroying me from the inside now that I'm much more aware of myself, my surroundings, people etc. It's like the more I learn, about anything, the more I get worried about how that affects me and how I need to change myself to better "fit". Loved loved looooooved this video ! Such an interesting and important topic, I really enjoyed your analysis on the matter. I'm sure this will become a video that I refere to, when I'll start stressing too much about my appearance, so thank you.
    Also, watching you doing your eyebrows is extremely satisfying, they're beautiful !

    thank you so much for this. this is exactly what i needed. i have ocd and the whole finding ur aesthetic thing has been heavy on my mind and i often find myself not buying things or regretting tattoos because they don’t match the certain aesthetic i want - WHAT. that’s so stupid.. i’m not supposed to be thinking abt myself this much. i miss just going to stores and buying things bc I LIKE THEM not because they fit a certain mold i would like to be.
