Recently joined the union after working in residential for 5 years, after my third year they offer a construction management associates degree from an accredited institution. After that, ill probably pursue the Bachelors. Great info. Thanks

Entering the commercial field was certainly an eye opener, it shows how far you can go. Theres alot more to it than a residential company thats run by an individual, vs a large corporation with many components. Now its just time to learn as much as I can, and work on leveling up. Some people dont want to take on the responsibilities of a GC position, but to me, we only have one life, may as well elevate as much as we can!

@deeworkzz2861 The commercial world is really cool. So much to learn in all departments. I love your attitude. Not everyone wants to take on those responsibilities but, when you lean into the discomfort of those responsibilities it feels so much more rewarding than the alternative. Thank you for your support, I appreciate it. Good luck with your journey...Keep up the good work!

I have gone back and forth on doing a CM degree. I also go back and forth on wanting to stay in the construction industry, lol. Some days I love it and some days I never want to work in the field again.

Personally, I would not go forward with any education if you're back and forth about it. The construction industry is a lot of fun but, you're right, some days you just don't want to go back into the field. I would say construction is one of those jobs if you're heart really isn't into it you should focus your attention in educating yourself in other career fields. As fun as this industry is, if you're half in, it will eat you up. Too much headache to take on if you don't enjoy the everyday challenges. Good luck! David.

I wanted to learn how to build hot rods and work on classic cars. I sent an email out to over 40 local speed shops in Orange County, LA, IE and out of those 40, four replied back, 1 offered me a future role in their shop. And finally one company told me to come tour the shop. I offered to mop the floors I just wanted to be in the shop around these cars. The owner had me in there the next day working on cars and even taught me a little mig welding. 2 months in he started paying me. If you want something bad enough you have to go get it. Most of the time it will exceed your expectations. Like I said I was willing to be miss doubtfire just to be around a custom car shop.
Edit: since beginning my CM degree just the fact I’m in a BS degree program for CM it has opened up the door for me to internships I otherwise wouldn’t have. You are right about mentorship. Through these internships I hope to enter a working relationship with a mentor that can teach me the nuts and bolts of a construction project on the front side of the business. I have 10+ industry experience in ready mix, residential and most recently pipeline construction, on the Labor side of the business. But have hopped around a little more than I probably should have chasing a higher hourly rather than thinking of the future and growing within one company.
