- A playthrough of Mindscape's 1992 license-based action game for the Super Nintendo, The Terminator.
The Terminator was one of the most bad-ass action movies ever made, and the license seems like a perfect fit for any number of excellent action video games to be based on. However, as with most movie licenses, history has shown us time and time again that a good license alone does not a good game make.
Games based on The Terminator have been hit-or-miss in their quality for decades now, but at the very least, this SNES adaptation of the 1984 film classic is a servicable adaptation. Thankfully, Mindscape contracted development of this one with Gray Matter, and while GM were hardly known for AAA work, their output was a huge step above stuff from Radical, the producers of the absolutely wretched NES Terminator game.
This run-and-gun SNES title put you in the shoes of Kyle Reese and tasks you with stages based on events from the film. You begin in the future, wading through seas of various killer cyborgs and androids before heading back into the past where you'll shoot through various familiar locales trying to find and protect Sarah Connor from her would-be assassin.
The shooter stages are pretty rudimentary but they get the job done. Though most are linear, left-to-right Contra-style affairs, the second stage is an open-ended exploratory level that quickly frustrates thanks to a ton of blind jumps and a gauntlet of rooftop helicopter battles: it's annoying that the worst level in the game appears so early on, because once you get past it, the game improves a great deal. The shooting and jumping work as you expect (though the screen is a bit too zoomed in to be able to see incoming attacks well), and it's pretty forgiving in its difficulty despite not giving you any continues. I loved the police station level, if for no other reason than it was hilarious to hear Kyle scream, "Sarah!" every time he opens a door.
The driving stages are pretty good, too. There are only two of them and they're short, but they look good and they control well. Too bad we didn't get a couple more of those thrown into the mix!
The presentation could've used a bit more work though. The digitized photos look great, though in what is probably a huge oversight, you can see all of the cutscenes by just letting the intro demo run over and over. I can't think of any other game that will let you see the ending without ever touching a single button.
The in-game graphics are all super dark and murky, making the stages look pretty dreary and dull, and the music is drowned out by some of the worst sound effects I've heard in a SNES game. Seriously, why is everything accompanied by a loud boing?
Overall what we have here is a flawed but still perfectly playable game, making The Terminator on the SNES a solid "not bad" choice for movie-based games.

Came here to see how long the first stage actually was, apparently around 8 minutes. Avgn made it look like 20-30.
i know i thought it was the whole game
This guy gets my sub because he is way better than AVGN. Shame that AVGN/Cinemassacre is now being hijacked by Screenwave and their uncharismatic fatsos.
@@ruko9876lmfao what has got you this angry over a game made 30 years ago based on a movie made 40 years ago
When you have repeating level layouts, it does feel that long
james rolfe sucks at games, this game isnt even that hard.
I imagine that in '92, the Terminator2 license would have cost a fortune and the first movie license very little in comparison.
Didn't realize you needed a separate license for either film, but perhaps makes a slight bit of sense in that case. Funny with how the first movie didn't even get games and stuff made for it, and that it's existence wasn't quite fully acknowledged until T2 came around, which was put that franchise on the map as well! (L.O.L.!)
@@freakyfornashwhat!!
@@freakyfornash The first one was a very successful movie(21th of that year), but it was 1984 and the american market was on the trash, almost literally. By the time the NES came out, there wasn't a lot of incentive to make a licensed game out of it.
6:47 "Holy mother in fucking god shit holy mackerel gosh damn HOW IS IT NOT OVER YET?"
The NES Terminator game might have been utter garbage, but the SNES one thankfully fares quite a bit better. It's no masterpiece, but it is a fun, if short and easy, way to play the movie.
I don't know if "short and easy" would be a good way to describe the first two levels. Seriously, they're so long and repetitive that they ruin the entire experience!
I wish they were either shorter, or divided into 2 or more levels each, in order to make them more bearable and for the players to feel like they're making at least _some_ progress.
Also, that whole "stop the player from running and practically force them to take hits" during the helicopter battles can eat my ass.
It's only a little better than the NES version. Honestly, this version sucks too. If the subpar soundtrack doesn't get you to shut the game off, then the sheer length of the first two levels will. And it's not like they're any fun to begin with. They're incredibly boring.
But the Sega CD version is better of all the versions of this game. No doubt.
I remember playing this game and not even making it past the first level just because it felt like it was endlessly looping. I thought for sure that was the entire game. Watching this, it seems like that aspect never really improves. This could also be the worst music I've ever heard out of the SNES.
Wait, you mean the first level actually ends? Huh.
I have one word and only one word to say
"SARAH!"
"Sarah!"
"Sarah!"
"Sarah!" - Sarah shows up. Level ends.
Also.
T1000 dropped in the lava.
Credits roll.
"Game Over"
damn i remember being a child playing this game late night, this shit used to scare me 😂😂
Kyle Reese's jump makes the same sound as the laser guns in the future. I know he came back in time to prevent the T-800 from changing the past, but what effect do you think he'll have on the future by going around Los Angeles circa 1984 and mowing down countless gun toting human thugs and attack helicopters?
Obviously less crime for 2019 Los Angeles.
0 effect, because if you could time travel backwards, then whatever you do will have already happened anyway. We would just call it fate.
The rooftop building level was frustrating. Being unable to move while you're being shot at and taking damage. Developers really wanted to piss players off with this one 🤣
The first car chase level was the hardest level in this game
The "searching for Sarah" level looks like a poor man's Moonwalker, only longer and more repetitive.
Who the hell of those developers thought these ridiculous sounds of BOING BOING for shooting and especially for jumping were a good idea for a snes game?
How many times will the Terminator film franchise need a reboot before the storyline becomes canon; I am still upset that the Sarah Conner Chronicles tv series ended ?! Also , this version of the Terminator film video game is not at all similar to the original film; plus, why is there a weird noise when Kyle Reese makes a jump !?
If they can make the crap that is Terminator Genisys then they will continue to milk Terminator and Arnold for what it's worth until that cow went dry, just like Star Wars right now when Disney disregard the entire EU canon and replace them with their own crap SJW version.
The noise stops after the first car chase level. For whatever reason...
Cuz gay
Did anyone Laughed at 18:51 when Kyle screams "SARAH"? Lmaooo I have this game on my SNES emulator and for a moment I thought it was a Beta unreleased game considering the low quality sound and simplistic game mechanics. That was until I researched the game and this vid popped up and now I see it, the cut scenes were pretty good and really the "Sarah" scream was unexpected, but I wonder if they made this game just to have game movie continuity since it seems it was close to T2 film's release that the game was made. Oh well, at least I can get a good laugh out of it and still enjoy it.
On the Sega CD port, that Music in the game, it's so awesome.
What do you expect from someone as awesome as Tommy Tallarico?
Sarah!!!!
I was a huge fan of the first movie so I rented this back in 1993. Could never get past the 2nd level.
Holy shit this just brought back memories
good or bad memories?
Holy shit, Bethesda made this 27 years ago 😮. Still better than Fallout 76
Lol, anything is better than overpriced crap that is Fallout 76. Fallout should remain as an isometirc RPG like the original Fallout 1 and 2 which I've played when i was still very young and these two Fallout games remains to me as the best RPG game i've played. Shame that Van Buren does not panned out and Fallout now turn into First Person shooter like Fallout 3, Fallout 4 and New Vegas.
😂😂
For much of this game you’re fighting off mohawked tuffs and what looks to be Cliff Burton clones than Terminators.
This definitely looks more solid than the second Terminator game, which is a slow paced mess.
dope game, i am so bad at playing computer games but i still like it
Does anybody wish that Journey to Silius had been able to keep its Terminator license? I really would have liked if Sunsoft had been able to hold onto it, rather than Mindscape grabbing it.
I could never beat this damn game. Much less get past the second level.
17:59
Kyle Reese: Come with me if you wanna live.
26:22
Kyle Reese: Sarah!
Sarah Connor: Reese.
Kyle Reese: This way.
27:18
Kyle Reese: Come on, mothercrusher.
whos is coming from AVGN to find out, if its really unbeatable? :)
Me
Like AVGN pointed out, it's weird how they re-created the title sequence of the movie, but didn't use the theme song. Why? Was there some weird licencing problem that they got the licence for the movie, but not for the music that belongs to that movie?
the sega cd version is the best
you heard that soundtrack?
Weirdest jumping sound effect ever. Sounds like a Terminator dog or duck.
Check out Chester Cheetah-Too Cool to Fool and Joe and Mac on Sega Genesis.
ending just shows a picture of Arnold, rolls the credits and then tells you game over. not the worst ending in video games but you hardly know whether or not you beat the game or lost it.
Came here to see how long the first stage actually was x2
Future War

Resistance Vs SKYNET
in the first level the graphics are fine, in the second they look like they draw in paint, what happend?
If you haven't done so already you should try the Sega CD Terminator game. That one's a real riot. Plus it has Tommy Tallirico's jamming soundtrack to boot. Virgin did that one as well as the short but sweet Genesis version. Yeah shame the NES one sucked as bad as it did, we could've got a good Terminator game had Sunsoft retained the license. Oh well at least we got Journey to Silius instead.
I thought this game was unbeatable
Megadrive was clear
This looks incredible monotone
Seems like the majority of games that were made for both the Genesis and Snes, plays, sounds, and look better in the SNES
Pretty much, since the SNES was the more powerful console, which was capable of doing stuff better than the Genesis ever could. Even the Sega CD's capabilities were at best a modest improvement for the most part (but still couldn't do some stuff which the Super NES could), despite having CD based hardware to work with on that system.
@@freakyfornash I thought Genesis was more powerful but with inferior audio? Well Sega advertised the Genesis to be more powerful.
@@andrewmoore7927 More powerful than the original yes, but not Super Nintendo though.
@@freakyfornash They advertised it as more powerful than snes
@@andrewmoore7927 Well that obviously wasn't the case, and the Genesis came out first too.
A Bethesda game
Odd
Funny with how every original Terminator game had Reese shooting/killing punks (and even sometimes cops), when he went back to the past levels like a homicidal madman! That being even if they tried to to murder him in the games first for no apparent reason(s) other than just to be dicks (save for when the punks didn't fight back in the NES Terminator game), which I'm pretty sure never happened in the movie as far as I know! That of which was also counterproductive to his mission, when he was supposed to PROTECT humanity, not do any further harm to it last I checked! (L.O.L.!) Even the evil Terminator (despite being a literal killing machine) didn't do that for shits & giggles, and only would if they of course got in his way, and impeded his mission somehow. The only real exception to that was when he killed the wrong Sarah Connors, but only happened due to his lack of knowledge as to which one was supposed to be the real target. As much as the Nintendo versions of these games tend to get a bad rap (and rightfully so), at least they had something the Sega ones didn't, which was driving stages like in the film though.
@@holidayinn4293 Yeah, and you're telling me too!
SNES had crisper graphics than most boxy graphic looking ps1 games...
SARAH!!!!
Sarah! Sarah! Sarah! Sarah! Sarah! Sarah! Sarah! Sarah! Sarah!
I used to hate this game very badly. I could never pass the second level... Damn it.
Somehow, the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version is way more superior
That version was alright. It's no where near as good as the Sega CD version, but it beats the crap out of this and the NES version.
28:23
You’re Terminated
Hobo with an Automatic Shotgun
SARAH!!!!! 😂😂😂
I seriously prefer the SEGA CD version sooooooo much more.
Better than NES game, but it pales in comparison to the Sega CD or even the Genesis version. It's *sooo* monotonous that first level.
Mucho mejor q la grosería q crearon para el nintendo nes
The game was brought to us by Mindscape, the guys who give us the awful NES game and Alfred chicken.
Mario 64
Was this released in Uk ?

HUH😮?
ARE YOU FRIGGIN KIDDING ME?????🤯
HOLY MOTHER OF F...N GOD, SON OF ALL HOLY MACKEREL, WHY WHY IS THIS LEVEL IS NOT OVER? HOW MUCH MORE DO I HAVE TO POSSIBLY GO. This first stage is way too difficult , I can't beat. GAME OVER😞😖😰😩." AVGN.
Bethesda licensed this?
*man boy whine* : Sarah!
This sucks compared to the Mega Drive/Genesis version Virgin Games made, the gameplay and soundtrack is wayyyyy better!!! Although I do appreciate the gameplay changes on some of the levels as they tried something different on the SNES version.
I had this garbage game, got it as a christmas present in '96, made it to the 2nd 'stage' once, never since. Tried in on an emulator recently to see if it was as hard as i remember, and i died in the fucking driving stage.
Action/adventure gamers are about to be Terminated, again. This side-view, multi-scrolling cart is based on the first movie from 1984, as well as the NES and Sega Genesis games.
esse jogo e um lixo so joguei ele por que era o unico jogo que tinha e ainda terminei todo jogo mas sofri muito
Horrible.Literally 0 creativity. The Sunsoft game could have been awsome. Luckily at least we got journey to silius.
This is a rip off of Metal Slug
this came out before Metal Slug.
Video games are for children.
