Nice to see a RUclips guide give a starter house guide that's actually a starter house and not a bronze age (or sometimes with even swamp items) house disguised as a 'starter house'. A good design. I often do a center fireplace myself, even in multi-story houses. Pointer, you can deconstruct wood piles (or any pile) with the hammer. No need to switch to axe.

This is a great house. I didn’t build it until after the first boss and the 20th day. Technically my second house.. wish I would have seen this sooner. Great house to build off of!!
Here to give credit. Big survival game guy but always the whole “starter base walk through” stuff is just click bait lies. I actually kept up with this one good job.
My go to starter is a cruciform shape. 6m x 6m center with fire in middle, then 4m x 6m extensions on all 4 sides. 4m high at eaves. One extension is bed (on 1m raised platform with chests below) plus any comfort, one is cooking area with at least 18 storage chests (6 wide x 3 high), one is crafting area with workbench and 18 more chests, and last is entry. The floor is at least 2m above ground so all workbench enhancements go under the floor. Thatch roof with inside and outside corners, extended out from walls to protect anything underneath. One standard stair from entrance. It won't reach the ground, but you can easily jump to it. Surround it with a continuous stake wall set at least 6m from house walls.
Never thought to build a frame for the building first? Makes stability so much easier to manage, and allows you to create the correct spacing/layout you want and fiddle with it easier before you build up.
I really should have. I framed out a couple of the window areas ahead of time but I really should have done it for the roof. I appreciate the tip. I am actually pretty new to the game myself and made this video because I couldn’t find what I wanted. So I am probably missing a few “best practices” on building
@@DrLootCrate It's a process, my initial working buildings had crooked roofs, all part of the learning process. I use half-walls for foundations and add vertical wood beams between segments then extend to the roof with angled beams. Then you can attach flooring to the half walls, walls and finally a roof, all of them know to be stable from the start.
This makes me wish I had made a meadows base in my current run lol. Meadows bases just have a super chill atmosphere to them. I only had a tiny starter shack before moving into the forest shortly after.
This was a really great video to learn how to build a nice house in the game. Would have been cool if you showed each part, I got a little stuck on the roof, but its definitely doable
Sorry, man. Agreed that I should have added a bit more detail in that part especially. If you haven’t figured it out, build the roof row by row starting from the wall. That will keep you from overextending it and having it fall.
love the vid but you are skipping so much when finished Something. or not even showing the result of certain parts. so it was hard for me to figure it out. anyway thanks!
Thanks man. I get it. There is a balance between showing every little thing and making an interesting video to watch. Maybe I should release the “director’s cut” that shows the complete thing

I built this house in game and loved it! With a few tweaks I was able to get an attic area to place many chests up there and out of the way but not until after I had played with this set up including killing the first boss.
Thanks man! That will be my only one house. I will not make better one. That one is totally enough. I play for adventure, not for build. Thats a really nice guide. Thanks. P.s i just started yesterday without knlowledge even about level grounding ! Haba thanks. For tips. Edit. Huh ! Okay :'D ive just realised what happens with wodden house after rain etc. So i can run away from building ! Peace !
I just stated playing tonight and the building was driving me mad!!! Im going to try to follow this tutorial but i know that roof is gonna give me trouble.
It can definitely be a little tricky. The roof is the trickiest part here too. I recommend start with the roof that attaches to wall and fill that first layer in all around. Then do the 2nd roof piece all around, etc.
Thanks for this video. Me and buddy played on pc long time ago and the game just dropped on series X so we started new tonight and this is nice easy house :D
Glad you liked at and thanks for the feedback. I have tried different style for this type of thing - stalking the whole time, super fast forward, or this approach. I liked this one for the general vibe of the video, but I am really glad you shared your opinion. Very helpful
Right on Davo! Glad you liked it. I had fun making it. This actually is my main house now. If you watch my other Valheim video, you will find that I am pretty new to the game. But certainly not new to doing a lot of building in video games. I am really looking forward to figuring out what I can build moving forward.
A lovely video. Why do you hit the lumber pile with your axe at 3:46? I always just disassemble it using the hammer in the same way you would remove an errantly placed wall or roof piece (middle mouse using the repair hammer option). I am honestly curious to know if there is something I am missing.
16 Stacks of wood is way too heavy to carry (100 per stack, max is 300 early game). What to do? Don't forget that you can put stacks of wood in a chest, or you can "build" a Wood Stack on the ground with your Hammer (it's in the Misc. tab). Go out, fill up your inventory with as much wood as you can (about 2 and a half stacks normally), run back to the build site and store it. Repeat this a few times until you have several stacks, which is at least enough to get the foundations down and hopefully some of the roof as well, then you can go back for more. Unless you wanna do 7 "Wood runs" in a row, depends on your tolerance for grinding. I like to alternate getting wood and building, it's less tedious for me that way, but your mileage may vary.
and I need more hours in the day! I will have another one coming soon. I am going to be going back and forth between Valheim and Satisfactory for the time being.
I had a 87 day long playthrough get fucked because my main base was destroyed during a greydwarf raid event that I wasn't prepared to fight (had no food for health/stamina) so on top of losing my main base, i also died, and spawned on a different land mass, and this was after i got deep into the bronze age. I will be using this video as a guide to build my next starter house when I eventually go back in and (once again) play the game solo.
Damn, that really sucks. My first raid was certainly a surprise, but didn’t quite get it that bad. I hope you get back into it and this build will help you out. But don’t forget the stake wall or a moat this time!
It seriously never clicked in my head to use those half wall sections instead of the beams for doing up the base of a building That aside, feels like it's a bit big for a *starter* home, but I suppose not everyone's gonna wanna start in a 2 stake wall by 3 stake wall shack
It is definitely bigger than it has to be, but looking ahead a bit, that extra room will come in handy. It is really good for two people…you can get the wood and build pretty quick
@@DrLootCrate I like there being room to expand, don't get me wrong. It's just it's a bit of a timesink for most people to *start* with. Probably could've cut it in half, in hindsight.
Bro this guide is honestly really hard to follow. A lot of this is me just having to guess what is being placed, where, and how. Some of it is kinda easy to follow but not a lot of it.
@@mercster understandable, luckily Valheim allows for you to set the pace of roughly everything you experience. When you launch a new save game, try fiddling with the difficulty sliders and see what you like. For instance, there is a "No Build Cost" box you can check if you just wanna build. (Beware: ive never tried it out myself so i dont know if it spoils future discoveries for you when you play a save without 'creative mode')
@@thatdude1435 I appreciate the feedback. I'm having a lot of trouble with how stuff "snaps" together, and doing the math as far as how big a "foundation" needs to be so I can build a roof that overhangs by 1/2 (0.5) roof pieces. If I knew how the building worked on a simpler level, I'd be better equipped.
I will definitely consider it. A little secret…I am just getting in to the Iron Age myself as started playing recently as well. But I am definitely planning on more videos in this style
Build each section from the middle down to the side walls first before adding another center roof piece. Orange is OK as long as it isn’t red and breaks
Totally had no clue why my house had to many yellow parts.. And kept decaying overtime, Untill I realized I had to actually make it stable using other logs just like a real house.. I then spent the next hour doing that, and the next day turned on the console command no cost.. I'm having so much more fun with it now.
I have over 700 hours in this game and I'm still not bored. It's, imho, one of the greatest rpg/crafting/exploration games in existence. And it's only 1 gigabyte! Amazing.
Once get to the end of the content (I am actually a relative noob), i will probably do the same with no cost, especially if I really get in to making more Valheim videos. Building cool functional structures is something I really enjoy, whether it be in this awesome game or the game I play most often on my channel Satisfactory
Toshiko I have a feeling that I will put in some time myself. I have over 800 hours in my favorite game Satisfactory...It is pretty different in a lot of ways, but similar in the way that you can find ways to entertain yourself for a long time!
I used half walls all around the bottom. I try to use the same height walls at different levels so the seams between the walls are on the same level all the way around
It is only important if you want your fire inside. If you don’t your house will fill with smoke, start killing you and the. Put your fire out. You can sprinkle a few campfires on the outside of your house, but that isn’t as fun or as good for convenient cooking
Im a little late, but if you see this, im womdering what you did to the window right beside the beds (across from the back door). It seems to be split in half in between the floor boards if that makes sense and i dont know what you did.
Love the build, a little was cut out but pretty straight to the point, if you kept a couple things in it could have hit the 10 minute mark and had more advertising. But nice build 🤌
Thanks Koro. I could have been a little more clear on some parts, but I did a follow up build video that explained everything that nobody watched! Looks like you lucked out on the ads. It was long enough
Thanks man. I am always torn about whether to step by step or not. For this one, wanted to show the steps but not every individual click. Glad you liked the house and thanks for watching
A couple notes: This is a very resource-inefficient design for the benefit of aesthetics. Which is fine as far as it goes, but you don't necessarily want to be cutting and assembling this much wood for every outpost as your explored area expands. This design is fairly exposed/vulnerable to "The forest is moving" and especially later "The ground is shaking" events. Protecting it will require even more resources. Again, not such a big deal for a one-off, but not something you'd necessarily want to be repeating across your map. Also, when it comes to picking a site, if you are going to invest in a big centrally-located base for your adventures, you'll want it to be nearby navigable water that is not a spawn-point for necks, so you can have someplace convenient to park a boat that you won't have to be constantly repairing.
Good notes. You can definitely get by with a shelter that uses a lot less wood, but my style is to take my time and I enjoy the building. I actually had written down to talk about adding stakewalls at a minimum, but I forgot! You are right about the necks. Maybe you have built another place by then, maybe night. But a good shout if you are planning on staying here for a while
While I like the build, I do agree is a bit big and a wood vampire for players to start with. That said, it's good for a proper house. For exploring and first habitats, honestly, best to do camps consisting of a 2x3 or 3x3 stakewall shack, depending on the group size(maybe a 2x2 at 70-80 wood, if you are solo and get good at building). Forest tends to have enough ruined towers that can be made into camps with a stack of wood or 2 that it isn't really necessary to do shacks. Swamps lack that, but you can build on top of crypts or in trees instead. By plains, the stake wall approach no longer works well, so you're going to want the build your shack on a smelter(all the benefits of stone with no stonecutter required)
SUP, I'm trying the level ground thing,I did what you instructed me to,dig around in a circle, but there's a stone, close to a seaside,it kinda makes a bump in the ground and it won't go down no matter what I try. I also have no pickaxe nor do I have a blueprint for it. How do I get a pickaxe and get rid of that..bump thing? Apologies for this comment is like 2 months after you posted
No prob dude. I am always checking my comments. I don’t want to spoil you, but you will get materials for a pickaxe if you follow the natural progression through the first boss. For now, I would recommend picking a site without a rock if possible
Anyone else having an issue where you are always exposed with where the bed is placed? Can never get my rested bonus after sleeping because the windows are leaving me exposed to the outside no matter how much I fiddle with the placement against that wall he uses.
Having big open windows can be finicky for this sometimes. If you can’t get a good placement for whatever reason, you can put some vertical beams in the window to divide it up. You could also use the 26 or 45 degree half walls to make the corners of the window filled in. Experiment a little to see what you like best
I just tested this to make sure. I build a small 4 x 3 room with a bed and fireplace but no fire. The game wouldn't let me sleep. I put a torch near the bed but the game wouldn't recognize it as fire. I built a small fire in the fireplace and slept like a baby. So the torch does not work as a fire option. Also, you need to be within 10 meters of the fire for the game to recognize you have a fire.

1:12 Yea... Did that haha Did not know trees could kill me lol
This makes me wish I had made a meadows base in my current run lol. Meadows bases just have a super chill atmosphere to them.
I only had a tiny starter shack before moving into the forest shortly after.
Super chill. Certainly a lot more chill than my outpost in the forest
Thats alright, I was being too harsh. Your video is actually really great and helpful
Bro is so interactive with comments it's actually kinda crazy
It is crazy bro. I am interacting right now at 2300 while I am in bed. Could be sleeping but I am answering comments like a boss
I love this plan since it has room for several upgrades to make it last a little longer!
Thanks Noir. That was the plan!
nice video dude, i just crafted this house, with a few small changes to make it more "mine" very nice guide and a tidy result.
Great video. I’m going to build a house right now. Was using an existing one. Was working but this is way better
Thanks Bobby! Glad you liked it and good luck building
Great video! Just started playing this game since it was added to game pass and this was a big help.
Thanks Sweaty! You are exactly who I made the vid for, so glad it was helpful
love the vid but you are skipping so much when finished Something. or not even showing the result of certain parts. so it was hard for me to figure it out. anyway thanks!
Thanks man. I get it. There is a balance between showing every little thing and making an interesting video to watch. Maybe I should release the “director’s cut” that shows the complete thing
Thanks a lot for this one. Made it exactly the same but had some roofing issues I fixed my way.
No prob. The roof is a little tricky and will collapse if you build in a certain order as you found out probably. Glad you found a solution
Just finished this in my world, thanks mate
No worries mate
Im not that experienced on Building houses and stuff in such Games but thank you so much for the starter house guide 😊 i absolutely Love it and it motivates to do more, thank you very very much 🙏🙌
I really hope we see more Building Videos in valheim soon (:
Thanks so much Light! It was my pleasure, a fun short video. I just took a little break, but will be back soon with some more videos
Great video. Really good starter house. Simple instructions, thanks for the video
Thanks Kyle! I really appreciate the feedback
Great video man, thanks for all the tips! Gonna try this design as soon as I'm home from work, my first attempt at a "house" was pitiful 😅
No prob Jake…glad you found it useful. My first house was decidely mid as well. It can only get better from there
I built this house in game and loved it!
Peace !
Awesome build I just finished it and it came together really well. Thanks for the video! 👍
Thanks buddy! Glad it worked for you.
I love the building in this game
Me too jedistudmuffin
Built mine a few days ago. Works well
Glad it worked for you looney
Thanks for this video most of the other ones are pple building further into the game and sets the bar a little too high
No prob, Colton. That is exactly what I thought so I just made the video I wanted to see myself!
Worked out great I used ur floor plan made a couple adjustments. Thanks!
It looks really nice for a starter house.
Thanks Jalfa!
Then do the 2nd roof piece all around, etc.
i would add some shutters to the windows once you're able, the skeleton invasion might mess you up if the archers get a sightline
That’s a good call but I will probably build a big wall around it to some degree
Thanks for this video. Me and buddy played on pc long time ago and the game just dropped on series X so we started new tonight and this is nice easy house :D
Awesome! You are the exact person I made this for. I am restarting with some extended family now that we have enough machines as well
Wow. I can't even manage to build a square house with a nice roof. Defo using this video next time I play valheim
You definitely should Martin! Glad you liked it
Love the video reminds me of my starter house haha. Just opinion, you should fill some of the empty audio spots with some tips or tricks.
Glad you liked at and thanks for the feedback. I have tried different style for this type of thing - stalking the whole time, super fast forward, or this approach. I liked this one for the general vibe of the video, but I am really glad you shared your opinion. Very helpful
great video, im making this for me and buddies
Thanks Coach. Sounds perfect
This is great, been playing on xbox and been thinking it's time to move out of my shack 😂
I think it is Danny Boy. Good luck building!
Thank you so much now I feel I can build so much more!!
Awesome to hear X. Good luck building!
If this is your "starter" house, I can't imagine how your "main" house would be.
But seriously, I loved the house you made. Really nice and well done!
Right on Davo! Glad you liked it. I had fun making it.
This actually is my main house now. If you watch my other Valheim video, you will find that I am pretty new to the game. But certainly not new to doing a lot of building in video games. I am really looking forward to figuring out what I can build moving forward.
So my wife and are going to be building a home together for the first time(in real life lol) and RUclips takes me to a Valheim video 🤣
Haha! Excellent. Probably because I said this house was perfect if you play with a lady friend
This video will help me I don’t play valheim but I will be soon
This will be perfect for you then. Hope you got Valheim for Christmas
awesome video :) i'm not a new player but all my houses are butt ugly, this one is very clean and cute
Thank you for this great guide! 😁
My pleasure Robbin!
remember to mess with the ground a little to see what direction the ground is so when you raise your dirt it isnt diagonal with your build
Aye! Noob me mistake
“Try not to die dropping a tree on your own head in the process”
I feel personally attacked.
Yeah you are not alone…haha
That's great! It's easy to build, thanks 👍
Thanks Sulfer! Glad you liked it
This was very informative, my houses have been straight garbage
Thanks Quentin. Hopefully this helps clean them up a bit
I had to sell my PC while back and couldn't play this anymore, pleasantly surprised how well it plays on controller on Xbox though
Bummer on the PC, but glad it plays well on Xbox. I was going to try it out later today just to see myself
Very helpful. Thanks.
Thanks for watching and glad it helped
A lovely video.
Why do you hit the lumber pile with your axe at 3:46? I always just disassemble it using the hammer in the same way you would remove an errantly placed wall or roof piece (middle mouse using the repair hammer option). I am honestly curious to know if there is something I am missing.
No, he just didn't know you could disassemble using the hammer.
As Toshiko said, I am just a dullard that didn't know/think to disassemble with my hammer.
Glad you liked the vid!
@@DrLootCrate It's a nice house though!
dude thank you very much i like the home
No prob Bud. Glad you liked it
16 Stacks of wood is way too heavy to carry (100 per stack, max is 300 early game).
I did exactly that in the video. Also build close to a bunch of trees 😉
Nice built tips i need try it out next time when i need built new base 👍
Thanks NUCLEARMUTANT91. You definitely should try it out!
Bro... where did the rest of this video go? Did you cut it out on accident?
we need more valheim videos mate ❤❤
and I need more hours in the day!
It seriously never clicked in my head to use those half wall sections instead of the beams for doing up the base of a building
That aside, feels like it's a bit big for a *starter* home, but I suppose not everyone's gonna wanna start in a 2 stake wall by 3 stake wall shack
Yeah, this ain't really a "starter house."
Everything here kinda explains itself if you give yourself time to test it out. I believe in you all!
@@thatdude1435 I don't want to replicate this, I want to learn the mechanics of how to build something. Methods, not an exact recipe.
Would you consider making a upgrade house once we get into iron age onward?
Cuz I'm stealing this 😂😂😂😂thanks
I will definitely consider it. A little secret…I am just getting in to the Iron Age myself as started playing recently as well. But I am definitely planning on more videos in this style
How to determine where the spawn for boars and deers are?
Im having issues with the roof, it's in the orange and I am unsure how to fix
Build each section from the middle down to the side walls first before adding another center roof piece. Orange is OK as long as it isn’t red and breaks
@@DrLootCrate Thanks for the pointers
This is REAL base building, none of that admin mode mega-structure stupidity. Basics with functionality
Thanks Chappers! That is exactly what I was going for and I am glad you enjoyed it
Totally had no clue why my house had to many yellow parts..
@@DrLootCrate I know you're going to like it. Erecting buildings is my favorite part of the game.
Great guilde for bulding a house, but please, next time you would show a recommended arrea, open map.
Every map is different! But it would have been a good idea to share my seed and where I built it for sure
@@DrLootCrate oh, I didn't know that! Thanks for info :)
I'm curious as to why you use half walls for some of the walling rather than full walls as you did for other parts.
I used half walls all around the bottom. I try to use the same height walls at different levels so the seams between the walls are on the same level all the way around
Is making a chimney important or just a cool feature to add?
It is only important if you want your fire inside. If you don’t your house will fill with smoke, start killing you and the. Put your fire out. You can sprinkle a few campfires on the outside of your house, but that isn’t as fun or as good for convenient cooking
Fires will need a cover as well because rain can put them out. When outside, windy environments can be an issue too.
such an enjoyable game
It seriously is
Im a little late, but if you see this, im womdering what you did to the window right beside the beds (across from the back door).
Thank you. I never even considered making a house like this. How did you NOT get raided every 10 minutes while you were constructing it?
Thank you so much
Thank you for watching!
Really awesome house but when trying to recreate it with all the edit cuts man its difficult
Thanks man. I am always torn about whether to step by step or not. For this one, wanted to show the steps but not every individual click. Glad you liked the house and thanks for watching
How does one hang deer and board trophies in the house?
A couple notes:
This is a very resource-inefficient design for the benefit of aesthetics.
@@DrLootCrate will do. I'll keep surfing some spawns until I get the good kind of spawn. Thanks a lot.
@@cristi.3057 you probably just need to walk around a bit in your current spawn and you can find a good spot
@@DrLootCrate or that. Also, what's a "black forest" that you mentioned in the video? Is it just some reaaally dense Beech forest ?
Nah, it is the next biome after the meadows. You can tell if you see pine trees. Be careful though. Baddies are definitely tougher
Can those beds be slept in? Since no campfire? Or does the torches work for the “fire” option? Thanks
Yep, it is close enough to the campfire in the middle. Torch on a stick doesn’t count for warmth
