HAMMER DRILL VS. REGULAR DRILL--What's The Difference?!! (Do You NEED a Hammer Drill?!)
Hammer drills and regular cordless drills are NOT interchangeable! They serve very different functions, and operate differently. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will explain the differences between a hammer drill and a regular cordless drill!
Hammer Drill Vs. Regular Cordless Drill:
Regular cordless drills are basically just spinning machines. They have a chuck and jaw that clamps down on a bit. Then, the motor applies torque to turn that bit. Twist drill bits basically just chop or carve their way through wood.
Regular cordless drills are great for drilling wood, plastics, metal, and even cement fiberboard like hardie plank. But, they are terrible at drilling MASONRY!
To drill effectively through masonry, you need a HAMMER DRILL. Most like a Rotary Hammer Drill.
Hammer drills spin--but they also STRIKE. The hammer drill motor carries out a tapping or chipping function while it turns the bit. This causes the bit to pulverize masonry with the tip, the back out the dust and little chunks with the flutes of the bit.
Rotary Hammer drills are larger, more powerful hammer drills that have a stronger striking action, and can bore through thicker, denser masonry more quickly.
Hammer Drill Bits are built with very tough chisel points to better strike material and crush it. Most of the hammer drill bits have a different shank/shaft, called SDS. This slots into bearings in the collet of the hammer drill.
If you only need a hammer drill a few times a year, many companies make standard cordless drills with a hammer setting. If you need to do a lot of masonry work, you're better off getting a Rotary hammer Drill.
My Bosch Bulldog Xtreme has worked great over the years, and has tackled everything I've thrown at it!

“every bit is appreciated” - I see what you did there

You’ve got a unique way of explaining everything with clarity and conciseness! Just like the tools you use, you appreciate them ‘getting to the point’ and doing what you intended them to do without wasting time. No doubt there are young folks (maybe some older ones, too) who are taking your teaching and using it to advance their career by success. Great job,...mentoring, ....not just a show-and-tell for the moment.😀
I've just found your channel and it's great. Particularly loved your impact driver video.
Very well-explained, without the 5-minute windup that a lot of DIY video instructors seem to like. This is one of the best!
*Excelente kit **MyBest.Tools** suficiente mente potente y ligero. la luz incorporada en el taladro es muy superior a versiones anteriores que se encuentra cerca del broquero.*
Perfect video! Plain English, clear audio, no distrating music of jumpy graphics and a pro who knows what he's talking about. Thank you!
Your videos are great long enough to contain all necessary information, yet not tool long. Thanks learned a lot.
Thanks for the info. Love how well you explain this stuff in an easily understandable fashion
Great Video Thank You. Never forget helping my Dad on a job 30yrs ago installing wooden columns he made in a lobby of a office building. We set everything up & were gonna use corded drills to fasten the columns into marble. Just 1 try with the drills & he looked @ me & said "we gotta get a hammer drill!" We wound up driving around NJ (we are from NYC) looking for a hardware store( pre Home Depot)
Absolutely a great video! Perfectly well explained, succinct and to the point, without any unnecessary fluff. Thank you sir!
ive got a sds drill for concrete drilling at work after watching these sds drill videos. Too often i avoided concrete work. Now i do it alot more often. thanks for informational videos 👍
This video was everything I needed. I was trying to drill holes above my fireplace to wall mount a TV and my drill was not penetrating at all. Loved the detailed and thorough explanation especially the materials each tool is good for. Time to get a hammer drill. Thanks dude.
Thanks again for the great information and great advice - I look forward to both from my Honest Carpenter!
I have a Bosch 1194AVSRK 8 Amp 1/2-Inch Hammer Drill that I purchased in 2009 for my father's small construction company.
After one of his workmen somehow managed to break the chuck, it was put back in the case for about 5 years after which I decided to take it over, clean it up and replace the chuck.
Since then I have used it to bore holes in a concrete block wall to hang a cast iron garden hose holder, drive sheet screws in a shed roof, bore the holes for the bolts in my Crabwood (a local hardwood) work bench, and drill new holes in concrete walls to replace sun damaged PVC brackets with aluminium ones for holding the down-pipes from the roof of my home.
It is truly a versatile piece of equipment that I would not trade for any other type of corded drill.
Thank u for all your great advice...I have no clue about tools and I just got a job as a cashier at a tool place....eventhough I'm just a cashier, our jobs are very involved with customers questions/problems... So the knowledge we need to know about the tools we sell to help our customers who have no clue is very important...so even as a cashier I still need to know about a lot of tools and how they work and you are the MAN that explains things in great detail and doesn't leave simple things out for us beginners that have no clue or dnt know where to start... and I love how u compare things like the drill vs the hammer drill so we know the difference and I can share this knowledge w the customers at my store...can't thank u enough for the hard work u put into these videos !!!!!!! 👏👏👏hope u have stuff about sockets and compressors lol
Thanks for the honest review and educational moment. This is what I came to see and learn.
Thanks for the video. Nice and clear explanation of rotary and hammer drills.
Very well explained. Never knew the difference. Now I know the drill and bit types I need for different jobs. Great vid.
My house is made of 7" thick concrete walls, YES I need a rotary hammer drill.
Dear bro, hats off to you. You enhanced my knowledge of drill machines from 0 to 10 in just a few minutes of this great video
your videos are AMAZING! so clear and informative to a very new beginner/ thanks so much
Thanks for sharing this.I did learn a lot more about the differences between hammer and rotary hammer drills.
Thanks for watching, John 🙂
Your video gave me clarity on some gaps of knowledge regarding the hammer drill. I knew the basics but you filled in the holes. Thanks!
Thanks for the straight forward information! Thank you also for good camera work/editing.
Dude love your videos I learn something from all of them. Great channel and presentation!
SDS rotary hammers are definitely the way to go if you’re drilling lots of holes or boring large holes in masonry or concrete. But in my experience standard hammer drill/drivers are fine for smaller jobs like setting tap-cons in masonry. If you’re using them professionally you’ll probably end up needing both tools eventually.
Great video! I was using a very similar hammer drill like the one you showed (dewalt) and it drove me crazy trying to work on masonry. I need to invest in a rotary hammer drill for sure. Thanks for the video!
I bought the bulldog extreme last year for a couple projects I absolutely wanted one for. It’s an amazing tool and I totally love mine
And now I know why my Bosch bit was on the verge of bursting into flames lol
Just started watching the last few days--you're the best on youtube! Very helpful tips and analysis!
My Dad had an old Hitachi hammer drill which used those SDS bits and chisels. Was an absolute beast that could handle any home project. The chuck mechanism failed though. I now use a smaller Bosch corded drill with a hammer function and while it's not in the same league, it does the job for the small amount of masonry drilling I have to do.
I think for the DIY'er the key is corded. A corded drill with hammer action from a good manufacturer is probably all you'll need. Just forget drilling concrete with battery tools!
What is the model number of your Bosch drill? I'd rather get a dual function for small jobs tyia
This video was very useful. It was simple and straight to the point, thanks!
This is a good explanation, and the best part of the video is the explanation of SDS mechanism. I have to drill a few holes in concreate soon, and i bought a power drill with hammering action. Will see how good it will be as it's the first time doing this.
Good instructor with an enlightening video. Thank you
It was lovely to watch and learnt what l needed. Many Thanks
Thanks your video was very helpful to me. Keep up the good work
Thanks for this it really helps me buy new tools for my business.
I had a diy job requiring 3 holes in concrete coming up but only have the makita with the hammer function and you answered my question if it will hold up. Now to figure out what bit to get. Here we go. Thanks.
Nice explanation of difference between drill, hammer drill and hammer functions - really helpful
Thank you fir informative video , I learn something about these 2 tools
Your Videos are easy to understand and really effective, Keep it up
I've been trying to figure out why my hammer drill isn't doing the job. Now I understand. This is the best video you will watch about hammer drills, hands down. Thank you!!!!
Thanks. Learned a lot. I have lots of materials from my dad but don’t know what is used for what, so great to see these video’s. I’ve used the hammerdrill to clean up old stones. It was difficult not to break the stones while removing the concrete. Any tips on that?
this was helpful. I am indeed in the midst of considering which drill I should be getting. Thank you.
Very well spoken and explained and very much appreciated. Thank you sir.
Great stuff I always wanted to know. Thanks!
Nicely Done!!! Straight to the point!!! Thank You Sir!!!! 👊👍😎
Thank you for the information, you did a very good job on explaining the difference between the two drills,
now I know which one to buy 😊
That bulldog is the modern version of "that tool your grandpa still uses despite being 30 years old". They are the Mario of rotohammers, all class!
Simple explanation for uninformed weekend warriors like myself. I love that the drill you used to explain hammer functions is your everyday beat up go-to and not a pristine display model. 👌 👍
I have to comment. I have minimal carpentry skills. I've taken an online course threw Ashworth and it was o.k. The problem is trying to retain what you learn from reading and thinking without real world experience..doesnt always work well. I really dig these videos from the perspecitve of a video editor and as someone who's trying to reinforce carpentry in my mind. It's rare to find someone at lowes who can explain this stuff and they get paid to work retail. Guess it's best to learn from the pros! Thanks again for posting. This channel is amazing!
great job, I enjoy your videos, keep on trucking
Always great content. Much appreciated.
Just a thought: Somebody this careful and handy could easily make some sound insulation panels and make the “studio” far less prone to echo/reverb. With 500k subs it might be time to take the AV to the next level.
Got me a Dewalt 20v XR brushless and this beast works about as well as my rotary rig. Nice to have the cordless power.
Since you requested we let you know what we learned, I simply want to thank you for distinguishing between a hammer drill and a rotary hammer drill and limitations of the former. That information helps me know what to buy.
Thank you for the info. I did learn the difference.
Very informative and helpful. Thanks.
Succinct and sincere. Very much appreciated. Thank you !!!
Great explanation. Thanks for the video.
Consistently outstanding, thank you man.
I think you did an excellent job summarizing the topic. Good info!
Thanks Hiriser!
Thanks again. I really am learning alot about the cordless tools I am buying. Not sure if I really needed my 1/2 in cordless hammer drill. I suppose I will find a use. Thanks again.
I wish every video was this simple yet thorough. Sub’d!
Dude you are great. Subscribed.
Thank you so much. I have a dewalt hammer drill but didnt know what it did. Love your videos!
Thanks Kathryn! I’m glad they’re helpful 🙂
thank you. so well explained. more power to you!🌳🌳🌳
Very nice guy. Love the way u explained it
Years ago, before I knew hammer drills existed, I needed to hang a picture on a solid concrete wall in a new house. It took me about an hour to make a hole with a regular drill. What a pain! I have 2 hammer drills now, but rarely use them. However, when I do use them, I get reminded that getting them was a very good idea.
paulparoma: Good share fellow diyer. I've been on the fence about this subject. 🤔
@@notsohandytim5090 😃
Excellent presentation. Very clear and precise.
OK so your video just saved me a bundle. I was trying to drill holes in my basement floor with my cordless drill to attach a threshold. I went through multiple bits with very limited success. After watching your video I went downstairs and grabbed my 1/2 inch hammer drill. WoW this was like magic. Even the bits I thought were spent ate through the concrete. The only regret I have is that I didn't see your video 4 concrete bits ago. Thanks so much.
Superbly informative video; clear concise and to the point explanation. 👍
Super vid as always!
Yeah, that's my experience, too. Cordless hammer drills are just bigger drills, that could also be used for masonry, in a pinch. Rotary hammers are what you need if you actually intend to bore holes in masonry with any regulatory.
Great information, I learned a lot
awesome & simple explanation. Keep it up.
Awesome 👌, very useful, thank you so much! Succinct and to the point.
nice watchng your video - got the difference between the different types of drills -thanks
best. direct to the point. thanks a lot!
Thank You for the info! Helped me a lot :)
As expected I learned something I didn’t know. Thank you
I just borrowed a hammer drill to drill some holes in a stone wall. Never knew what it was. Thanks for the informative video.
Thanks bro! I was looking for a combo kit....decided after this, that I am not going to need the hammer drill function and save the $100 bucks listed. If the day comes that I need a hammer drill (probably won’t) I will go get one then.
Just hit the bell👍
From zero to hero on hammer drills just from this video. Thanks!
Great video. The only thing I would add is a tip for using tapcons. If you don’t clear the hole before driving, you could cause the tapcon to snap. Not fun!
Learned a lot. Thank you!
The best vid concerning this topic. Thank you
You’re welcome, Azarul!
Thanks for this very useful information
I always wondered what the hammer grip in my 2 foot one hammer and regular drill was for. I have yet to need it, but it’s good to know
I was just designing a character that uses a magic hammer drill as a weapon. I didn't expect this video to be so well articulated and informative
Great video . Thank you 🇬🇧
Just what I needed to know thanks
so useful, thanks for the info
Thanks for this man.
Thanks for the explanation of a standard drill and a hammer drill. Makes perfect sense and "no wonder why"... :)
I was clueless until now. Thanks for the comparison. 🙃
Correct! We Tried to use a regular drill on a 4 inch newly constructed concrete porch--- took about 5-7 mins to get a 2 inch hole drilled (only 6 of 72 holes were drilled that day). We Stopped the project-. Tomorrow, 12/15/21, we will use the hammer drill we rented today- stay tuned. By the way, Thank You for explaining everything
I work as a carpenter in maintenance at a state institution. We have to drill into a lot of masonry walls. We have used Craftsman, Dewalt, and Makita cordless hammer drills and I think Makita is the best.
Thanks, this explains about everything. Regular drill have me driving nuts to drill a concrete wall.. i guess ill invest on a hammer drill
Great info!!
Learned something today thanks
