I listened to your discussion after the vid. It is a unique sport started in Australia in 1858, so was the first code to be codified. It is Aust’s most watched sport and has the 3rd highest match day attendance of any domestic league in the world. The main reason players are not as “ big” as rugby players is that players run 14+ km per game, and some even run 18km. The smallest player is 172cm & the biggest is 211cm. So is a game for all sizes but requires great fitness. Watch my recommendations in the prev post but also watch game highlights for a better understanding of Aust’s best kept secret. The ground is round because they are playing on a cricket ground. Cricket is played there in summer and footy is played there in winter. You cannot touch anyone above the shoulder or tackle anyone below the knee for safety reasons, but you can climb on oppostion player to mark (catch) the ball. You get 6 points for the ball between the big posts and only 1 point at the short post.
A catch of the ball after someone kicks it is called a MARK. 6 points[a goal] are scored when a player kicks it through the area between two big posts. 1 point [a behind] is scored when a player kicks it through the big post and the small post areas on either side.

They run up to 16km per game, built like middleweight boxers, have core strength to hit and absorb hits while having the awareness to see players on a 360 degree radar. Settle down no one has died playing AFL. I was interested that you said they are skinny, some of those players are well over 100 kgs. A catch is called a “mark” and the player has the option to keep playing or he can stop and take a free kick. It is the fastest, fittest, toughest and most spectacular football code requiring great courage and attack at the ball. Watch “what is AFL” & “AFL 50 top marks” PS. A goal is kicked between the centre posts and 6 points and the umpires signal with the 2 finger salute, if the ball is touched or goes between the outer posts it is 1 point and the umpire signals with 1 finger.
Hey Dudes. The fella in the middle know. If the ball is kicked though the big posts that's 1 goal that's worth 6 points. If the ball is kicked or is touched and goes between the shorter posts that's 1 point. A player must bounce the ball every 15 metres when running and in possession or hand ball it; you cannot throw the ball. If a player has possession and is tackled and doesn't kick or hand ball, they are deemed to be holding the ball and have given away a free kick. A mark means you have a kick to set up your play. There are 4 quarters in each match where the teams kick towards opposite end each quarter, then swap ends at the end of each quarter

Has elements of rugby, basketball, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, etc. We have FOUR football codes in Australia- Australian Rules, Rugby (League and Union) and Soccer.
When they pass by foot, and a player (from either team) catches the ball after it has travelled at least 15m it is called a 'mark', and the player can take an unimpeded kick from that spot, or play on. No points are scored from this; to score, the ball needs to be kicked through the four goal posts. Through the two tall middle posts, they score 6 pts; through the short and tall on either side, they get one point (called a behind). If it hits one of the middle posts or is touched by an opposing player before it goes through, it is also one point. A scoreline might look like this: 10 (goals at 6 pts each) 10 ('behinds' at 1 pt each) 70 (combined score). You can bump or tackle, but not above the shoulders, or below the knees. A lot of the hits here, were illegal (most of these players would have been suspended for a number of games!). Welcome aboard lads, greatest sport on earth! 💣💥

Players must bounce the ball or touch it on the ground while running not more than 15 m,(16 yards) most of the early footage was from days gone by, very strict now about bumping players in the head. X number of weeks suspensions will result. Standard fare tackle must be between shoulders and knees. The only scoring is by kicking it between the two taller posts for a goal which is worth six points. Hitting the post or if it goes between the outside posts it is called a behind, which is worth one point. You might see a scoreline of 10 - 5 -65. That means 10 goals x 6 points each = 60 points, plus 5 behinds (points) = total 65 points. When you take a mark (catch) you can stand without the opposition player allowed to interfere with you, so you can direct the kick to a teammate, or shoot for goal. Players earns a free kick if grabbed above the shoulders or tripped below the knees, or pushed in the back. There are a few more reasons for free kicks also. Our Aussie nine-year-old kids practice those round the corner kicks from the boundary line in their backyards. Here’s a tip. If you want Aussie subscribers, DON’T call it rugby. Don’t even make a reference to it. We hate that. Rugby in Australia only draws minor crowds, whereas Aussie rules is the fourth highest crowd during sport in the world, and is by far our number one sport. A grand final, like America’s Super Bowl, is played in the Melbourne cricket ground in front of close to 100,000 people. Even a couple of the important regular season games can draw up to 90,000 people. Some of those hits were legal and some not. So for example: - You cannot aim for the head with your arm or elbow. This would give the opposition a free kick and get you put "on report" by the umpire (there is no send off rule in AFL) and could get you a heavy suspension. - You cannot push a player in the back. Free kick to the opposition. - You cannot tackle above the shoulders or below the knees. Free kick to the opposition. - You are allowed to jump up on the shoulders of a player in front when attempting to catch ("mark") the ball. After you mark the ball you cannot be tackled and have a choice to immediately play on, or stop and take an unimpeded kick. - You are allowed to bump or shove a player out of the way when the ball is within 5 metres, even if they don't have possession ("shepherd"). There are rules but it is still a tough, full contact game!
Welcome to the best sport on the planet guys. Basic rules. 1. The balls is kicked or handballed to you team mates with the objective of kicking through the goal posts. The centre posts are worth 6 points being called a goal. If kicked through the other side posts it's called a behind and scores 1 point. You may see score lines like this. I.e 10.12. 72 vs 14.7.91 the first number being goals and the second being points. In the case of these bumps and hits. You can bump but it is up to the player making contact to not make high contact noting above the shoulder. If you chose to bump and make head high contact it may result in a fine or suspension from games depending on the injury that is affected apon the player you hit. And if high contact is made a free kick will be given to that team. Free kicks are given for rule breaches. 1. High contact in tackles, marking contests or hits. 2. Pushing someone in the back in a marking contest or tackle. 3. Hitting or holding someones arms in a marking contest. 4. Blocking someone run at the ball in a marking contest or ruck contest. 5. Making front on contact in a marking contest. 6. Holding the ball being tackled and the umpire deeming you to have an opportunity to get the ball away and you not making clean posession. Or not trying to get the ball out of a tackle and trying to hold it in. There are plenty more rules but those are the basics and I may of missed some. My advice would be to try and watch a game with an Australian they will fill you in on what's happening and you will have a better idea of what is happening. Oh in this video you see josh Bruce take big high mark on a guys back. Called a specky. Catching the ball is called a mark and specky is one of our games unique things where a player can jump onto another players shoulder and take a huge high mark. They don't get points by catching the ball on top of someone else's head, although that is an interesting idea not gonna lie. They score 6 points by kicking the ball through the 2 tall posts or 1 point if the ball is kicked between a small and big post, if the ball goes through any posts by any means other than kicking, if the ball is touched after the kick or if the hits the large post. When you catch the ball from a kick (more than 15m long and by either opposition or ally), you get an unimpeded kick where the opposition cannot target you for 10 seconds, after which is play on and they can tackle/chase you down. You are allowed to jump on the opposition's back, shoulders, head to mark/catch the ball at a higher point (giving yourself an advantage). Bumping the opposition is allowed, but only below the shoulders and of course not too low, tackling must be above the knees and below the shoulders. If you get tackled with the ball, it is a free kick to the opposition. if you mark/catch the ball or get awarded a free kick inside your 'forward 50' A marked area of the ground at each end representing 50m from goal, then you can take 30 seconds to have a set shot at goal (for 6 points) There are other rules, but these ones are some of the ones to get started.

Very funny as an Aussie to watch you guys figuring out the rules for this :D I grew up in a 2 "religion" household - my mother was from the south and watched AFL on Saturdays, and Dad is from NSW and watches Rugby League on Sundays. The way they jump so high in AFL, it's pretty amazing. Rugby League is different to Rugby. Hey guys, the first thing you need to understand is that Aussie Rules is not like rugby! Don't even mention the 2 games in the same conversation. Rugby in Australia draws about 30% compared to AFL. Aussie Rules players are supreme athletes with foot and hand skills, as well as strength and willingness to put the body on the line to win the ball. You have much to learn, grasshoppers.

They dont get points for marking (catching) the ball but they then get a free kick to go forward. The goals are at each end of the ground and you have to kick it through.

The average height of an AFL player is 6'2" against Rugby League of 5'10". We've had guys like Sanderlands who was over 7 foot tall and a guy currently playing for the Bulldogs, called Caleb Daniels who is 5'4". Both games are physically demanding, Rugby is more based on strength, where AFL is fitness and agility. Most AFL players can kick with both feet and handball with both hands. AFL players are far from skinny, if Rugby League/Union and NFL players are Pit Bulls, AFL players are Greyhounds. They're nothing but lean muscle, but have the highest endurance of certainly any ball sport athlete on earth. If you mixed a Soccer player with their insane ball skills and talent with the fitness of a triathlete then you'd have an AFL player, basically. Jordan Lewis got back up and finished the game he didn’t die or anything he’s a pundit now. Wouldn’t happen now but back when it happened they didn’t know as much about concussion and what not. Umm it’s nothing like rugby I think the best way of describing Aussie rules is that it’s an like amalgamation of about 5 or 6 different sports disciplines all mashed into one sport, not intentionally though it is actually around 170 years old. It went fully professional in 1990 and has changed changed significantly since that time due to the nature of athletes playing it getting significantly more athletic although purists harkening for them ‘good ol’ days’ sort of keeps it grounded. AFL and Rugby are why soccer is a distant 3rd as far as ball games in Australia are concerned. It's really hard to respect a sport where players roll around and scream in hysterics like they've been stabbed as soon as an opposition player so much as breathes in their general direction.
Guys, do some research first! You came into this totally unprepared. These players range in height from 5'5" to 7'. The game is nothing like Rugby, but a combination of many. In Australia, we sometimes refer to the game as "the big dance". These guys are as graceful as a ballet dancer and as tough as a warrior!
there are 4 goal posts, the two outer ones give 1 point, and the middle gives six. the ball starts at the middle and the aim is to get it down your opponents side for a 6. the catches known as "marks" are a break point that you get to kick to a team mate to continue down your opposing teams goal posts. the bounces are like basketball, if you dont bounce its classed as a travel there is no points scored for marking, other than it sometimes looks fancy and you get a breather for 5 seconds ahaha. tried to keep it short, hope this helps someone :)
This is old footage. Due to far too many concussions such head high hits are severely punished with at least 3 weeks suspension. Even if it is accidental.
Don't 'guess' the rules. You do not get points for marking (catching) the ball.....you get them for kicking the ball through the posts at either end of the ground. 6 points for kicking it through the big posts and one for kicking it between the outer posts. One more correction......our game is *nothing* like rugby.

This is why they have numbers on their backs. If the hits are illegal, the umpire will take the offender's number to be reported and will go to a Tribunal and be suspended and depending on the severity of the hit, then the suspension can be up to 12 weeks or more
They don’t jump like basketball players, basketball players jump like them. This game was played long before basketball came long and no, it is nothing like rugby.
Yeah, the first organised game of Australian Rules Football was in 1858. The first organised game of basketball was in 1891. Basketball and rugby are best forgotten about anyway.
The vast majority of kids start play AFL when they are 5 years old and keep playing. They are best described as muscled up triathlons as they need huge cardio to run for about 2 hours a game whilst been hit from any direction. One thing you will never see is a player taking a dive for a free kick. If they did and kept going, they would be booed off the ground by all.

You catch the ball...you get a free kick....the aim is to get the ball between your big middle pole at your end. ....that’s worth 6 points (goal). the outside poles are worth 1 point
98% are allowed. Even if they get into a all in brawl the referee just continues the game, and the guys finally stop to go get the ball. Maybe one in 100 games has a player who doesn’t finish the game, most go off and get some magic done to them and come back to finish the game all bandaged up.
lol you dont get points for a tackle, or a mark (catch). you only get points for kicking it between the post's, the reason the score went up during the replay is because its filmed live and the replay is happening while the play has continued so you didnt see but after they caught it they kicked a goal while the replay was on and the score was still live. You should look into afl more i see you havent made any more videos on afl, its a great game for any sports fan, action packed sport

It is Aust’s most watched sport and has the 3rd highest match day attendance of any domestic league in the world.
The main reason players are not as “ big” as rugby players is that players run 14+ km per game, and some even run 18km.
The smallest player is 172cm & the biggest is 211cm. So is a game for all sizes but requires great fitness. Watch my recommendations in the prev post but also watch game highlights for a better understanding of Aust’s best kept secret.

The ground is round because they are playing on a cricket ground. Cricket is played there in summer and footy is played there in winter. You cannot touch anyone above the shoulder or tackle anyone below the knee for safety reasons, but you can climb on oppostion player to mark (catch) the ball. You get 6 points for the ball between the big posts and only 1 point at the short post.

Hey Dudes. The fella in the middle know. If the ball is kicked though the big posts that's 1 goal that's worth 6 points. If the ball is kicked or is touched and goes between the shorter posts that's 1 point. A player must bounce the ball every 15 metres when running and in possession or hand ball it; you cannot throw the ball. If a player has possession and is tackled and doesn't kick or hand ball, they are deemed to be holding the ball and have given away a free kick. A mark means you have a kick to set up your play. There are 4 quarters in each match where the teams kick towards opposite end each quarter, then swap ends at the end of each quarter

Has elements of rugby, basketball, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, etc. We have FOUR football codes in Australia- Australian Rules, Rugby (League and Union) and Soccer.
When they pass by foot, and a player (from either team) catches the ball after it has travelled at least 15m it is called a 'mark', and the player can take an unimpeded kick from that spot, or play on. No points are scored from this; to score, the ball needs to be kicked through the four goal posts. Through the two tall middle posts, they score 6 pts; through the short and tall on either side, they get one point (called a behind). If it hits one of the middle posts or is touched by an opposing player before it goes through, it is also one point. A scoreline might look like this: 10 (goals at 6 pts each) 10 ('behinds' at 1 pt each) 70 (combined score).
You can bump or tackle, but not above the shoulders, or below the knees. A lot of the hits here, were illegal (most of these players would have been suspended for a number of games!).

Everyone before they learn what the AFL is: "It's like rugby."
Check out, “What is AFL?” For rules. Players must bounce the ball or touch it on the ground while running not more than 15 m,(16 yards) most of the early footage was from days gone by, very strict now about bumping players in the head. X number of weeks suspensions will result. Standard fare tackle must be between shoulders and knees.
The only scoring is by kicking it between the two taller posts for a goal which is worth six points. Hitting the post or if it goes between the outside posts it is called a behind, which is worth one point. You might see a scoreline of 10 - 5 -65. That means 10 goals x 6 points each = 60 points, plus 5 behinds (points) = total 65 points. When you take a mark (catch) you can stand without the opposition player allowed to interfere with you, so you can direct the kick to a teammate, or shoot for goal.
Players earns a free kick if grabbed above the shoulders or tripped below the knees, or pushed in the back. There are a few more reasons for free kicks also.

Here’s a tip. If you want Aussie subscribers, DON’T call it rugby. Don’t even make a reference to it. We hate that. Rugby in Australia only draws minor crowds, whereas Aussie rules is the fourth highest crowd during sport in the world, and is by far our number one sport. A grand final, like America’s Super Bowl, is played in the Melbourne cricket ground in front of close to 100,000 people. Even a couple of the important regular season games can draw up to 90,000 people.

This is nothing like rugby.
This is Australia’s most popular Sport.
Kicking the ball between the two middle goal posts scores a goal which is 6 points. Kicking or touching the ball through the outer two sections is a behind which is 1 point.
The players can run with the ball but must bounce it every 15 metres.
Some of those hits were legal and some not. So for example:
- You cannot aim for the head with your arm or elbow. This would give the opposition a free kick and get you put "on report" by the umpire (there is no send off rule in AFL) and could get you a heavy suspension.
- You cannot push a player in the back. Free kick to the opposition.
- You cannot tackle above the shoulders or below the knees. Free kick to the opposition.
- You are allowed to jump up on the shoulders of a player in front when attempting to catch ("mark") the ball. After you mark the ball you cannot be tackled and have a choice to immediately play on, or stop and take an unimpeded kick.
- You are allowed to bump or shove a player out of the way when the ball is within 5 metres, even if they don't have possession ("shepherd").
There are rules but it is still a tough, full contact game!

Basic rules.
1. The balls is kicked or handballed to you team mates with the objective of kicking through the goal posts. The centre posts are worth 6 points being called a goal. If kicked through the other side posts it's called a behind and scores 1 point. You may see score lines like this.
I.e 10.12. 72 vs 14.7.91 the first number being goals and the second being points.
In the case of these bumps and hits.
You can bump but it is up to the player making contact to not make high contact noting above the shoulder. If you chose to bump and make head high contact it may result in a fine or suspension from games depending on the injury that is affected apon the player you hit. And if high contact is made a free kick will be given to that team.
Free kicks are given for rule breaches.
1. High contact in tackles, marking contests or hits.
2. Pushing someone in the back in a marking contest or tackle.
3. Hitting or holding someones arms in a marking contest.
4. Blocking someone run at the ball in a marking contest or ruck contest.
5. Making front on contact in a marking contest.
6. Holding the ball being tackled and the umpire deeming you to have an opportunity to get the ball away and you not making clean posession. Or not trying to get the ball out of a tackle and trying to hold it in.
There are plenty more rules but those are the basics and I may of missed some. My advice would be to try and watch a game with an Australian they will fill you in on what's happening and you will have a better idea of what is happening.
Oh in this video you see josh Bruce take big high mark on a guys back. Called a specky. Catching the ball is called a mark and specky is one of our games unique things where a player can jump onto another players shoulder and take a huge high mark. It showcases a players athleticism and is a massive highlight in our game.

AFL/VFL as it was called was first played in the 1858 and the league/ Competition was established in the 1870s. . Melbourne Football Club is THE OLDEST Football club in the WORLD. It was established in 1858. .The average ground/ oval is 173 mtrs/ 190yards x 147 metres/160 yards.
The average game is 120 minutes, its 4 quarters of 20 mins with approx 10mins of extra time for stoppages. There is a 5 min break between quarters and a 15 min half time break.

The big 6 clubs have 65,000 to 100,000 paid up members.
The Football is smaller than a rugby ball but bigger than a NFL Ball. It is made from Kangaroo leather and is smooth leather unlike a rugby/NFL ball that have the sure grip/ pimples for grip.
An average player can kick a ball between 50mtrs / 54yrds and 65 mtrs/75 yards in the air without the bounce.
The scores can be confusing to anyone unsure of the game. The behind was introduced in the 1870s to stop games from being a drawn game, prior the introduction of the behind games would go for sometime hours before a winner would kick a goal to have an out come.
There are still drawn games but they are very rare, maybe 1 game a year.

They don't get points by catching the ball on top of someone else's head, although that is an interesting idea not gonna lie.
They score 6 points by kicking the ball through the 2 tall posts or 1 point if the ball is kicked between a small and big post, if the ball goes through any posts by any means other than kicking, if the ball is touched after the kick or if the hits the large post.
When you catch the ball from a kick (more than 15m long and by either opposition or ally), you get an unimpeded kick where the opposition cannot target you for 10 seconds, after which is play on and they can tackle/chase you down. You are allowed to jump on the opposition's back, shoulders, head to mark/catch the ball at a higher point (giving yourself an advantage). Bumping the opposition is allowed, but only below the shoulders and of course not too low, tackling must be above the knees and below the shoulders.
If you get tackled with the ball, it is a free kick to the opposition. if you mark/catch the ball or get awarded a free kick inside your 'forward 50' A marked area of the ground at each end representing 50m from goal, then you can take 30 seconds to have a set shot at goal (for 6 points)

Very funny as an Aussie to watch you guys figuring out the rules for this :D I grew up in a 2 "religion" household - my mother was from the south and watched AFL on Saturdays, and Dad is from NSW and watches Rugby League on Sundays. The way they jump so high in AFL, it's pretty amazing. Rugby League is different to Rugby. Hey guys, the first thing you need to understand is that Aussie Rules is not like rugby! Don't even mention the 2 games in the same conversation. Rugby in Australia draws about 30% compared to AFL. Aussie Rules players are supreme athletes with foot and hand skills, as well as strength and willingness to put the body on the line to win the ball. You have much to learn, grasshoppers.

They dont get points for marking (catching) the ball but they then get a free kick to go forward. The goals are at each end of the ground and you have to kick it through.

The average height of an AFL player is 6'2" against Rugby League of 5'10". We've had guys like Sanderlands who was over 7 foot tall and a guy currently playing for the Bulldogs, called Caleb Daniels who is 5'4". Both games are physically demanding, Rugby is more based on strength, where AFL is fitness and agility. Most AFL players can kick with both feet and handball with both hands. AFL players are far from skinny, if Rugby League/Union and NFL players are Pit Bulls, AFL players are Greyhounds. They're nothing but lean muscle, but have the highest endurance of certainly any ball sport athlete on earth. If you mixed a Soccer player with their insane ball skills and talent with the fitness of a triathlete then you'd have an AFL player, basically. Umm it’s nothing like rugby I think the best way of describing Aussie rules is that it’s an like amalgamation of about 5 or 6 different sports disciplines all mashed into one sport, not intentionally though it is actually around 170 years old.
It went fully professional in 1990 and has changed changed significantly since that time due to the nature of athletes playing it getting significantly more athletic although purists harkening for them ‘good ol’ days’ sort of keeps it grounded.

These players range in height from 5'5" to 7'. The game is nothing like Rugby, but a combination of many.
In Australia, we sometimes refer to the game as "the big dance". These guys are as graceful as a ballet dancer and as tough as a warrior!

there are 4 goal posts, the two outer ones give 1 point, and the middle gives six. the ball starts at the middle and the aim is to get it down your opponents side for a 6. the catches known as "marks" are a break point that you get to kick to a team mate to continue down your opposing teams goal posts. the bounces are like basketball, if you dont bounce its classed as a travel there is no points scored for marking, other than it sometimes looks fancy and you get a breather for 5 seconds ahaha. tried to keep it short, hope this helps someone :)

You do not get points for marking (catching) the ball.....you get them for kicking the ball through the posts at either end of the ground. 6 points for kicking it through the big posts and one for kicking it between the outer posts. The vast majority of kids start play AFL when they are 5 years old and keep playing. They are best described as muscled up triathlons as they need huge cardio to run for about 2 hours a game whilst been hit from any direction. One thing you will never see is a player taking a dive for a free kick. If they did and kept going, they would be booed off the ground by all.

You catch the ball...you get a free kick....the aim is to get the ball between your big middle pole at your end. ....that’s worth 6 points (goal). the outside poles are worth 1 point
98% are allowed. Even if they get into a all in brawl the referee just continues the game, and the guys finally stop to go get the ball. Maybe one in 100 games has a player who doesn’t finish the game, most go off and get some magic done to them and come back to finish the game all bandaged up.

lol you dont get points for a tackle, or a mark (catch). you only get points for kicking it between the post's, the reason the score went up during the replay is because its filmed live and the replay is happening while the play has continued so you didnt see but after they caught it they kicked a goal while the replay was on and the score was still live. You should look into afl more i see you havent made any more videos on afl, its a great game for any sports fan, action packed sport
