Been in love with AFL for something like a decade now, I'll definitely take it if my fellow Americans start following it. I know our country can be pretty insular when it comes to other countries, but I really do think most NFL fans would enjoy it, especially given AFL plays during the NFL offseason. Never been down there, but have always wanted to get down to a match. Also a preemptive sorry to Aussies. Carn the Pies!
NFL is quite popular in Australia too. It's the off season of football here, so NFL has a following here. Nikka Kikka the entire NFL season, playoffs and Super Bowl has been on free to air TV in Australia for at least 30 years. It's now on 7mate for probably last 8 years; and Ch 7 and ABC prior to that..
We can all argue about what is the "best" sport and go in circles...but of the football codes around the world, it is probably the most physically draining.... Elite players run half a marathon every week, get tackled from any direction....and while the bumping has been watered down over the years for player protection, these guys are bigger and run harder than previous decades so their hits are still big, kick the ball 50 metres (not yards) and do it for between 100-120 minutes of game time on an oval about 170-180 metres long....all this in nothing but a skin tight Guernsey and shorts...
Awesome interview guys....I'm an Aussie and don't support Mason's team, but he is a legend....to do in a few years what most of us couldn't achieve with a lifetime of experience is incredible...and this is the best US interview/commentary on the game I've seen..... When everything settles down, get your arse over here for a couple of weeks and take in as many games as you can.....it'll blow your mind as a live sport...
I'm in the States been watching for a long time, when I'm watching my pies and friends show up , they are like what the hell are you watching. Then I have to try to explain to them and that's a pain in the Ass !!!!!!! Go pies !!!!! I'm ready for March !!!!!!
For those uninitiated. I will point out that Collingwood has the dubious honour of being the most loathed club in the AFL. All the other 17 clubs supporters delight in their losses and rapidly forgets about their wins. True, they have a huge supporter base but quantity does not necessarily equal quality.
I attended a Swans home match in 2012. I was fortunate enough to sit next a fan who patiently explained the nuances of the sport (I knew the basics). The match was between Sydney and North Melbourne, but the fan still felt obliged to tell me that "everybody hates Collingwood."
I really hope the AFL works out something with Pat as he learns more about it. But mainly that this sport gets more traction in the US. There is an amateur league here known as the USAFL. Friends, look it up and check it out. Most major US cities have a club and are always looking for more players, both men and women. You will love the game, and make lots of new friends, as well as drinking buddies. You may find yourself in the best shape of your life.
I agree, the more exposure for our great game the better but I'd rather the AFL focus on a Tassie team than expanding outside of our national borders...
I remember...I used to watch it after school... My brother and I used to crack up at the Refs when they would Signal a 6 point score... Remember they wore Suits? Lol
Anzac Day match is always worth watching. It draws a massive crowd and the atmosphered is electric. Our biggest match of the season next to the Aussie Grand Final.
I'm so happy to see America finally noticing this sport. I learned it in 2009 studying abroad. The first match I watched, the Lions (the closest team to where I studied) made a giant comeback to win. I've been a fan since.
What I love about Aussie Rules is, from the second he steps on the field to the final whistle, regardless of how well he's called the game BOTH set of fans give the ref so much s**t!!!
I have never heard of Mason Cox being called Coxzilla until now. As far as I am aware, he was known as The American 'pie. (Because he plays for the Magpies - Collingwood).
I’m American n I went to watch this team this guy plays on. This stadium is huge pictures do no justice. It was a blast a lot of good people n beers flow. It was better than any nfl game I’ve been to.

Good call! There was a crowd of 100.000 just for a club match in 1958 Soccer can only get close for World cup and internationals. The MCG had 121.000 plus at one game too! Yes Collingwood again!

The Sky Is Blue I am Australian too and I was listening to him at the beginning of the interview before he said how long he’s been in Australia and I was sure that he had some Australian accent. At that stage I was trying to figure out how long he must’ve been in Australia to get that Australian sounding accent. I was thinking maybe a couple of years so I was actually surprised when he said six years because his accent is not that strong. But there’s definitely an Australian accent there and I picked it quite easily before they even started talking about accents.
The Sky Is Blue you must not hear to small aussie tangs in his accent? How he prounounces SOME words compared to others. Theres heaps of aussie influence in it! Odd how you cant hear it being an aussie
The game is great. Hard as hell to watch live here where I am from ( 🇧🇷), due to lack of official broadcasting and indecent starting times in our timezone, but I'm satisfied with highlights
I know this is a three-year-old video, but your boy Mason Cox is in a grand final today. This could be the first time and American player win the grand final. It’s a 50-50 game on who wins go Collingwood
For people that don’t know, the ownership structure is very similar to the ownership structure of the Green Bay packers. The packers are owned publicly by the people of Green Bay because when they purchase their season tickets they get membership to fan facilities of the club. When you purchase a full membership of an AFL team you get a season ticket and access to club facilities. The members get to go to the club rooms which is like a locker room after the game when the players go into the club room. The money made from memberships goes to the club and helps pay for the staff and club property. The team isn’t owned by a private owner so each club is structured like a country club rather than a sports franchise. The fact that the team is non-profit means the salary cap is built for competition rather than inequality between team executives and players because theres no majority owner to profit off of the players which means there’s no financial incentives to control labour costs
Kunaal Choksey I’m talking about facilities for fans. The clubs have special restaurants or hotels with bars and indoor community/social rooms that only members have access to. I’m not talking the club training grounds or club offices. It’s like the atmosphere of a country club because it’s exclusive for members only

Fell in love with Assie Rules Football back in the day when it was on the Sports Channel, some might remember when Sports Channel out bid ESPN for the NHL rights in 1988, Aussie Rules was a pleasant surprise
From one footy fan to another, welcome aboard Pat. Great to see you promoting our great game. Hopefully you and the rest of the guys can come down for a taste of footy and a bit of Aussie hospitality. Maybe do a show from Oz? Also those highlights you showed of Mason's were mostly against my team, the Brisbane Lions. Thanks for that! We're a team from Queensland where you get a few more huntsmans and other bitey/stingy animals but we love it. Honestly though Mason Cox has been a relevation for the game. It's truely inspiring what he has achieved to date and he deserves more applause for what he's been able to do. I really hope he gets more praise from you guys in the US and from us here in Oz. Also just to note, there was a taller player than Coxzilla up until last season, 7ft 1 Aaron Sandilands but he's retired now so yep Coxzilla is probably the tallest in the league. As we love to say though, the bigger they are the harder they fall...Great show guys. Will tune in more often now. 1 last point, we play 2 styles of rugby in Oz. Rugby League and Rugby Union. I've played all of them and absolutely love them all but AFL from a playing perspective was a lot more fun.
He's even better now than he was 3 years ago. Well done to the man, I played aussie rules my whole life and never made it even close to as far as he has.
The Cox-zilla. Thank you mate for bringing the sport we love in Australia, ie, AFL to the great national of the United States. If the yanks give this sport a chance who knows what the future could hold. This sport rocks. Just give this sport a chance. Big hits, massive climatic moments and carnage from first siren to last. Seriously you lot, from the USA. Check this AFL out. It's awesome!!!
I used to watch it all of the time when younger and on ESPN back when they needed content and I always liked it. Once ESPN got big they didn't show a lot of these sports and I kind of moved on but missed it especially the way the officials would signify a goal or whatever it's called. Always loved the announcers and how enthusiastic they were.
If you have kayo sports you can watch it all on there. With the corona virus though the seasons currently post ponned. Coming from an aussie if i were you and you really wanted to get into aussie sports id look at the AFL and NRL youtube channels and watch the full games they have been showing until the seasons back. Go watch some NRL youd love it and its easier to pick up the basics compared to AFL.
It'd be cool for Pat to really expand the game into the US - when I was at uni all of the American exchange students were voracious footy supporters by the time they left.
His only downfall is he still can't say Melbourne correctly lol 😂 And his yards and metres mix - but I'll give him a pass cause he's trying to covert it for Americans.
Soccer is the biggest and most important sport on Earth with over 4 billions fans and is massive in over 240 countries. Afl only has 7 million fans and massive in only 4 Australian states. Soccer will be the number 1 sport in Australia by 2050 hdjf
Haha great interview. I’m not a Collingwood fan but I’ve always followed Mason to see how he’s gone each week when playing. I think he’s done remarkably well coming down here to play a game he’s never heard of, and it’s not an easy game to learn. Well done Big Coxy. 👍
Yeah I love to hate the Pies but Mason is an incredible young man, can't imagine how scary it was to fly halfway around the world to play a game you don't know, big balls you know, much respect
It’s not easy making AFL. Just playing and being good enough to get a game is an achievement. Being an established player from overseas who has never played the game…well that’s something usually only the Irish can pull off and even that is few and fair between.
Best interview ever. I wish Americans would be more open to sports around the world. I have always been fascinated by sports like rugby and cricket but here in the US, if it's not played locally, people want nothing to do with it.
Yeah I think that's the case with lots of things in America not just sport. I think many poeple think it is just a backwater sport with no rules. This couldn't be further from the truth. This is fully professional with world leading medical and training facilities. The salaries for the players are where near as high as US sports due to Australia only having a population of around 25 Million but the crowds per capita are enormous. The best players only earn just over 1 million AUD ( 700K USD ) a year. Mason would be on 200-300K a year. The players play for about 7 months of the year and train for over 11 months of the year. Mason was correct in saying the top midfielders run 10+ miles in a game all while having to execute NFL punter level kicking on the run. Most of the Aussies who have gone to play NFL are Failed AFL players who happened to be a really good kick. If the NFL actually spent some time trying to poach the best kickers in the AFL a majority of the punters in the NFL would be Aussie. every player in the AFL must know how to kick the ball 55+ yards to a moving target. Michael Dickson is an example of this and he is one of the better punters in the NFL.
Yeah, it always seems pretty insular over there. If it's a team sport, but it's not one of the main American sports, it just doesn't seem to get a look in. Which is disappointing really. Now, I note you also say "Rugby". What do you mean by that? I'm hoping that some Americans on here start to learn that there are actually two separate sports called Rugby Union and Rugby League. They're different. You should check out some of the NRL videos on here.
Mason Cox handled that with a lot of class. He has developed into a very handy player. A Pat McAfee speaking tour with Mason and Jacko would be sensational.
I'm Canadian. I've been following AFL for about 8 or 9 years now. I cannot get enough of it. I felt drawn to Hawthorn almost right away so I support them. i have some Aussie friends who verbally destroy me for that decision.
Love aussie rules. Spent many nights up at 3-4 am to watch a game. Funny how until 2016 a Grand Final game could end in a tie and have to be replayed at a later date..lol I remember the 2010 Grand Final between Collingwood and St. Kilda ending in a tie..

North Americans don't realize how HUGE this game is in southern Australia. I'm a Canadian and desperately miss hockey right now, AFL is a great substitute.
I'm an Aussie that has followed our game all of my life, and I have to tell anyone from the USA that when you become a member of an AFL club it's kind of like a religion, especially in Melbourne. These people are passionate.
So happy to see you're loving the game! If you wanted to learn more about the origins of the sport can I recommend a book to read called "A Game of Our Own" by Geoffrey Blainey. This will make you love and appreciate the game even more!
I've been a fan of the game for years except where i live you're lucky to see a game every other year. It's kinda like a cross between rugby, soccer and the NFL. Great game, a mans game. Definitely fun to watch.
I have always thought of it as a mixture of Rugby and Basketball, but it's more like galic football from Ireland. Interestingly the only sportsman that I know of that have successfully made the transition to afl are basketballers, rugby players and mainly galic footballers.
I would love to see the AFL come to the States. However, I could not think of one ground that would come close to accommodating the size of the pitch needed.

Yeah he (cox) is pretty funny. When he is interviewed down here (Straya) all you can hear is his American accept. Listening to him interviewed by a fellow American you can hear a bit of an Aussie accent creeping in here and there.
Better mate?
@@jmc7636 just ribbing you. I know the jist of what you're saying. I never knew "seppo" was used by Aussies, though.
Love hearing this guy talk. I was born in Texas and lived in Australia as a kid. His mixed accent sound exactly right to me. No worries mate! I'm a new fan!
After watching this video I immediately watched a random full aussie football game. Wow, what an amazing sport. I'm glad I had a small understanding from you guys to enjoy it. We need this in the United States. Thanks Pat and the boys!!

@@jasonphillips6959 2nd that, one of the best games of all time, it had everything. Big goals, big marks, a big comeback and the latest goal to seize the lead in a grand final for something like 70 years. West coast winning makes it even better
Carn the Pies!
you ruined a great comment by adding go pies! lol. great to see our sport getting some love in the States. P.S Skol Vikings!
It's funny because we're getting a lot of NFL now too, last Superbowl was on free to air TV maybe for the first time.
It's a shocking sport
He is now a Premiership winning player, AFL Grand Final 2023 yesterday, Collingwood defeated the Brisbane Lions 90-86
Mason’s Aussie accent is getting pretty legit 👍👍👍
I'm from Australia and it's so funny, when he talks half the sentence sounds like pure native Aussie and the other half sounds American haha.
When the video first started I thought maybe he was Scottish, the shape of his words did NOT sound American, but clearly wasn't aussie.

So glad you’re bringing some recognition to this sport! I lived in Australia for 1.3 years on a working holiday visa, best time of my life?!
For those uninitiated. I will point out that Collingwood has the dubious honour of being the most loathed club in the AFL. All the other 17 clubs supporters delight in their losses and rapidly forgets about their wins. True, they have a huge supporter base but quantity does not necessarily equal quality.
Yeah, Collingwood is about the only club that only has to travel interstate about 4 times a year for a start.
You either Love the greatest club in the land or love to hate the greatest team in the land either way theres alotta love haha
They are the Dallas Cowboys of the AFL.
I attended a Swans home match in 2012. I was fortunate enough to sit next a fan who patiently explained the nuances of the sport (I knew the basics). The match was between Sydney and North Melbourne, but the fan still felt obliged to tell me that "everybody hates Collingwood."
Their moto is literally 'us vs. them'
Mason Cox: Yeah I'm the tallest player to ever play the game
Aaron Sandilands: ...sorry bro?

I really hope the AFL works out something with Pat as he learns more about it. But mainly that this sport gets more traction in the US. There is an amateur league here known as the USAFL. Friends, look it up and check it out. Most major US cities have a club and are always looking for more players, both men and women. You will love the game, and make lots of new friends, as well as drinking buddies. You may find yourself in the best shape of your life.

I agree, the more exposure for our great game the better but I'd rather the AFL focus on a Tassie team than expanding outside of our national borders...

Try and go in September when the finals are on.
Cannot believe that Jeremy Howe Cox's team mate, has not come up in the marking contests discussions, the absolute beast of spectacular marking...
I have never heard of Mason Cox being called Coxzilla until now. As far as I am aware, he was known as The American 'pie. (Because he plays for the Magpies - Collingwood).

I liked when Conan O'Brien went and trained with the Sydney Swans last year. Funny video

Mayo Hosko spot on mate, the club membership, Helps the club survive financially... this is why, it’s called “The people’s Game”
members dont get access to facilities, dont know where you got that from
Kunaal Choksey maybe he has been in the rooms, after the game ... give him “fair dinkum” go 😂😂
Kunaal Choksey I’m talking about facilities for fans. The clubs have special restaurants or hotels with bars and indoor community/social rooms that only members have access to. I’m not talking the club training grounds or club offices. It’s like the atmosphere of a country club because it’s exclusive for members only
not sure where you heard that from either, there's no places in vic that do that.

Yeah I love to hate the Pies but Mason is an incredible young man, can't imagine how scary it was to fly halfway around the world to play a game you don't know, big balls you know, much respect
It’s not easy making AFL. Just playing and being good enough to get a game is an achievement.
