- The Cubs have secured the sweep of the Baltimore Orioles, perhaps the best team in baseball, with a 8-0 drubbing at Camden Yards on Thursday. Justin Steele lowered his season ERA to 2.71 as he spun a masterful seven scoreless frames. The offense, that outscored Baltimore 21-2 in the three game set, poured in eight runs on 13 hits. Nico Hoerner and Miles Mastrobuoni had multi-hit efforts. Michael Busch stayed hot with two hits of his own. Sieya Suzuki clubbed three separate RBI-extra base hits and Dansby Swanson got in on the action with a long home run after flying out to the warning track prior.
The Cubs have now won four ballgames in a row, and sit only three games back in the NL Wild Card race and four games behind the St. Louis Cardinals, whom they play a four game series with starting tonight.
Cubs vs Cardinals 7:15 CT
Kyle Hendricks (1-7, 7.53 ERA) vs Sonny Gray (9-5, 3.30 ERA)

All I can say is that the Cubs did give me what I asked for for my Birthday today...I was watching another show and I was like what would be awesome is if the Cubs could just sweep the Orioles for my Birthday and take the series in St Louis...first big big half is done..I so did not expect a sweep and two shut out games at that...brought my spirits up for sure for my Birthday today (12th) my last year before I level up to level 5😮👀😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Happy Birthday! It's my birthday too!! Go Cubbies!!!
Just gonna enjoy baseball, cuz they can break your heart, no big expectations
I’m just gonna try to enjoy this season with out any expectations.
Absolutely
Massive, massive series coming up. Unfortunately we have no pitching lined up for it 😭
As happy as I am with this win I still am not expecting the playoffs this year but it would make me happy to see them win a series or two in the post season if they squeeze into the wildcard.
68 games left 45-23 rest of the way should get you in i would have kyle on short leash tonight if he isnt sharp hopefully assad can help in this series
Go Cubs Go!
Run differential is down to minus five!!!!!!
I'll believe when they get 2 or 3 games above .500
Like your optimism, Anthony. But the Cubs have a tendency to break your heart.
I love ya Anthony, but I'm not drinking the Kool-Aid yet bc it was only a 3 game series. They did look really good in the O's series. If they sweep this 4 game series from the Cards, I'll start drinking the Kool-Aid for sure!
They're playing well. The only bad thing that could set them back is Hendricks now. If they can outscore St. Louis in this game, maybe a sip of Kool-Aid.
Go Cubs!
What I want to see is consistency of winning series. Better not lay an egg in the loo
As someone who watches the cubs and the O's I'll pass on the Kool-aid for now. Thrilled with the cubs performance but its a small sample of their season compared to the overall sum. The cubs came in playing well above their average but the O's were playing well below theirs. They didn't look like themselves both at the plate and even in the field and good for the cubs for being in a place to capitalize. I'm not ready to say "buy! buy! buy!" but I am ready to say "deal! deal! deal!" because now we have something of value to deal with. I was thrilled with the cubs rookie class' performance over the last several days and hope Mr. Hoyer can get them the support we all hope to see even if that support doesn't hit in earnest until spring.
Cubs were 25-19 on May 16. They were an above average team for 1.5 months. Then they were bad for 1.5 months and are now getting hot. So no, they haven't only been good for a week.
This year's pitchers on the Injured List. Starters or potential starters on the IL:
Taillon Steele Hendricks Assad Wicks Brown Smyly Killian
Relievers on the IL:
Alzolay Merriweather Leiter Almonte Thompson Roberts Palencia Brewer
Yikes. That's Abby-Normal.
A split with the Cards is a big win right now.
The Hendricks start is a guaranteed loss going in🤣. We'll see if Wesneski can stay consistent. Its clear the Cubs have a really formidable, at times dominant 1-2-3(Steele, Imanaga, Taillon). After that... can't wait fot Ben Brown to get back and Wicks hopefully healthy soon.(And Merryweather hopefully back to form)
The worst part about today's game is that it's exclusively on apple tv
Its beautiful
I hope Hendricks can hold it together and that if he struggles that he is not left in too long causing a lop-sided blowout early in the game.
THIS is the team that we thought was gonna be here since the start. It just didnt work that way. Swanson hits a homer ?? He musta been shocked himself. Lots of teams have problems, just look at the Dodgers starting rotation right now. Anything goes. Cubs will have to continue to have a chance for the playoffs but it sure is possible. Steele and Taillon lead the rotation and with some relief help getting healthy, who knows.
This team is a "streaky" team NOT a consistent contender team!! You can be excited today, but they'll break your heart in another week or two.
CUbs W!!!! Bigge couldn't find the strike zone
They are capable but . . . this is how they played last year, they had a good July & August, then collapsed in September. Will they be buyers and move good prospects . . . again? Tough decisions to be made.
I love my cubs and yes they swept the Orioles but if I was a betting man I'd say they'll lose 3 out of 4 against the cards
Paul Skenes MURDERED the Brewers last night.
Before he's done, that dude will be murdering a lot of teams. His fastball is friggin' scary.
I have least confidence in Kyle among all Cubs starters. So I would give him very little leash, maybe 3-4 innings at most
Hey Ant, do you think that a big reason that the Cubs offense played like as you called it “like a dead fish” was because of the fact that the bullpen was absolute garbage and blew many saves? I think it’s because it killed the motivation of the offense, and now that our bullpen is finally coming together it’s motivating the cubs again. That’s my theory, what do you think?
It’s a give and take. We feel like the reason the Cubs didn’t come back in a lot of those games is because they may have felt defeated once the bullpen coughed up the lead. However, the Cubs still
Got the lead in 17+ games - which leads me to believe they have always been grinding to win.
Where the Cubs going to get the starting pitchers.
Steele only threw 70 pitches yesterday. Available Sunday?
NO.
Kool-Aid or Bust???
IF the bullpen does it. If the Cubs starters perform as 1's and 2's. If the Cubs hit. If the Cubs score. If the Cubs play outstanding D. ???
@ttanne7838 as long as morel isn't playing third base that could happen they could have outstanding D
Let's put this roller coaster team behind us, sell sell.
Sorry. Don’t trust them to keep it up. They need to take the series in St Louis before I get close to any kool aid.
I would be buying in and drinking the koolaid if this exact team didn’t do this exact thing last season…
What the Cubs are doing now, they could’ve done in May/June. They just didn’t. What they did to the Orioles proves how good they really are/can be. My problem is that they played like stiffs for 2 solid months because they did not choose to do any better. To be blunt, the entire team played that 2 months with a brainless hitting approach. In other words, they slumped for that long because they were intentionally stupid. I never thought they were no good. They were stupid. Well…, temporarily they’re not stupid anymore. They crushed the best team in the AL on the road. They’ve got to be pretty good. BUT…this bunch can turn stupid again…overnight.
I hate to say it, but it’s their personality.
The bullpen is about to be good. The starting pitching-a big surprise, and I don’t think they are going to regress. The offense?….beware.
The can easily regress overnight.
Now sweep Cardinals!
In addition to the offense coming alive, what has changed? Mastro at third saved who knows how many runs (Steele called Mastro the MVP of his complete game) and a different bullpen. Remember the Cubs had 17 blown saves or something in that neighborhood.
Miles's batting has picked up lately, both hits and walks. Amazing how some regular at bats works. He was also able to move to right when Belli got dinged.
This team is too streaky. The lows are too low and the highs aren't high enough. I would try salary dumping at the trade deadline.
We got to believe!! Go cubss
It was Happ and Busch got that started with the hitting and now everyone else
is playing better.
They are determined to get their $16 million out of Hendricks. It's no way he should be pitching with a doubleheader coming up. If he gets rocked early, it's going to be a long series.
It's like they took 2 months off from playing baseball. The O's played like a team who thought one of the worst teams in baseball wasn't a professional baseball team. The Cubs are now tied for last instead of being in sole possession of it. If they do what they did last year they'll lose another prospect for a rental and have the 16th pick. All while not truly being a playoff contender. Swanson is not and has never been a solid bat, 2020 and 2022 are outliers of a .245 hitter. Cubs are if anything aiming for a WC slot.
Go Cubs!!! Take 3 out of 4 in St Louis!!! We're back!!!
They are going to have a problem this weekend. Maybe 1out of 4.
It's too little too late. There are not making the playoffs.
LOL, you act like it's September. Not even the All Star break.
@tinman67tn at least I'm not drinking the kool-aid thinking they're going to win it all. So, they finally swept a team. Got to win more series and beat division rivals more consistently to make me think they will even make the playoffs.
Take your negativity elsewhere.
@stevethomas5467 you should be used to it as a bears fan. Lol
@@jarrodwilson3864 The tides will soon turn my friend....
Ant. You are young so you get a pass! This team is no contender and should be busted up and players sold at the deadline! Winning a series doesn't make you a contender😂!!! This Cubs team won't be in the playoffs and rebuild starts with firing Hoyer! # Fire Hoyer!
