    I love that Cooke is making these. Modern, less expensive, large format cine lenses with character, something I haven't seen. One thing I'd love to see in these tests is what the edge glow looks like with a light just out of frame. I have a set of Sekor C's in part because they reminded me of Cooke's.

    Wow, Cooke lenses for basically the price of the Sigma Cine primes is a very interesting proposition. The slow speed doesn't bother me, T2.4 is plenty specially on Full Frame, where a given field of view will have similar depth of field to a T1.6 on S35 - more than ultra primes or S4s. I think these will be a big success with FX3/6 users

    Thanks for the effort but it's hard to know it the footage looks as good because you're using the 8K Red or because of these lenses. Would have been good to shoot the same scenes with another lens to highlight the difference! Or use these on a Sony A7siii or something like that and compare with a Sony lens in comparison. Right now, this doesn't really help me know if these are worth the investment or not compared to another set of lenses.

    I usually don't look at cine lenses review as im more in the photography group of people, and i have to say that these lenses would be destroyed in any photo review by looking at their technical performance, specially given their price. I'm sure that they have their specific and subjective qualities, for a different target, which is film making, but, i have the feeling that the brand behind is setting much of their price tag, as soon as you look at parameters. Lately there are many new companies creating cheap cine lenses, and some of them are really capable, for a fraction of these prices. A bit of the "Leica world" mindset i see.
    Of course this is just my opinion, each one see the world subjectively, just felt i had to share my point of view this time 😅

    These honestly look cool if you want a workable set that has some character for some doc/music/fashion work. The size/weight also opens up possibilities for solo ops with small gimbals etc. The price for the set is still probably edging more in the rental market though. I would find it hard to justify £18k on a 'character' set personally. Could work out if that is your go-to style I suppose.
    To put it into context, for the price of these you could get a set of Athenas, a Ranger Zoom and a Komodo-X...

    • @adriancrespo4274
      @adriancrespo4274 10 месяцев назад +2

      I think that’s a big thing, the price is hard to justify, it’s competing in the same price range as a lot of nice lenses, like the sigma Cine primes, I love the “Cooke look” but as an owner op it makes more sense to go with something more neutral and with a PL mount.
      The biggest selling point for these is their name, they’re really cool but we have a really saturated market.

    • @tjh__
      @tjh__ 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@adriancrespo4274 agreed. However if they rent for £200 a day or under (likely based on their cost) then I’ll definitely give them a spin. I think they could become popular at rental houses to go out with FX3/6/9, Komodo, V-Raptor, C70 etc. Sometimes moving a big flight case of PL mount cookes is a bit much, so I definitely like how these could slip into those smaller shoots.

    How different are Cooke Panchros compared to Cooke S4s ?

    • @Jmob4life
      @Jmob4life 9 месяцев назад

      From what I've seen, there's more character in the Panchros and the character isn't distracting. The Cooke S4's have a nice highlight rolloff while the Cooke Panchros do as well. But the overall handling and balance of sharpness vs soft in the Cooke Panchros Classics is noticeably better to me. I come from a painting/illustration/design (very professional) background and the difference is equal to how painters perceive a certain painter named John Singer Sargent.
      Now I'm going to get into some detail.. but it's important. You'll see why, I think.
      Sargent is heralded as the contemporary Van Dyke in terms of his lighting and use of balancing hard verse soft edges (sharpness vs softness). In other words, he was considered to be the most talented portraiture painter due to how he elegantly stated light and texture in paintings. Sargent did just that in his own time but made it more impressionistic, but not fully adopting impressionism entirely. Shortly after Sargent's glory days, other artists tried to do what Sargent had done with Van Dyke's elegance but also trying to imitate Sargent. It became clear that even though these imitators tried for decades to look like Sargent, mostly every trained painter/designer could see the difference, even though they look similar. When you look at a John Singer Sargent I feel feelings of amazement, and that's how I really know it's done by John Singer Sargent. When I see an imitator without anyone telling me that it's not one of Sargent's paintings, I certainly know because it doesn't make me feel wonder. Instead, I'm distracted by the crafting of the painting and certain mannerisms that these impersonators employ to achieve their imitations. This is what the difference feels like to me. The Panchro Classics give all the balance without me thinking, "wow, I love the softness". Instead, I think, "wow, I love the soul".. of whatever it captures through its lens. Characters feel more at peace, more graceful; there's a difference.
      In short, the Panchro Classics make me enjoy the etherealness and soul of characters and scenes it captures. The S4's distract me by enhancing effects in ways that make me look at the effect and not the subject or scene. Consumers need to understand that there is a difference between imitation and being wonderstruck. If at the end of the day I'm paying for an effect when buying a Cooke lens... I'm wasting my money. Give me the Cooke Panchros Classics and the Speed Panchros series 2 and 3.
      Anyways, these new "SP3 Cookes" are not it. Showing the quality of Cooke lenses for up close shots of a face is a pretty useless way to use the characteristics for a Panchro as well, I think. I don't even know why this video was released other than to have other people rent them out? I don't know. It's annoying to see these RUclips reviews because they TRULY DO KNOW IM SURE. They know the lenses don't hold up but instead try and be overly optimistic about these lenses' performance. It's frustrating to see this so often.
      Anyways, yeah. Let's go make stuff.

      @ZEROFilms_ 9 месяцев назад

      @@Jmob4lifeThanks for the detailed insight. So you will still prefer the Cooke Panchros Classics Ser II/ Ser III over the Cooke SP3, because it seems to be more a imitation of the original?

    • @Jmob4life
      @Jmob4life 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@ZEROFilms_ Yes! ABSOLUTELY. I have a hard time saying that the SP3 is even an imitation. I would say the SP4's are an imitation. The SP3's are so off the mark in terms of Cooke quality that I wouldn't even call them Cooke lenses. They literally look and perform like any old vintage glass. They just happen to have the Cooke logo.

      @@Superbustr I want a 40mm not a 43mm. Why is this such a difficult thing for lens makers to get, in the contact printing days 25mm was super popular, many lens sets from that time go from 25mm to 35mm because 25mm was a great normal lens. Then when Super 35mm came and the film gauge got bigger manufactures started making the 27mm. Then when we got full full frame digital all real production sets have a 40mm (expect for the Hugos because Leitz also can’t get their shit together). But go fuck yourself if you want a decent 40mm cinema lens that doesn’t cost at least 15000 bucks. You can use a 35mm or a 50mm! It’s not the same thing. 40mm is singular in its naturalism and versatility.

      It's not possible to make an RF to RF Speedbooster... There needs to be a differece in flange depth to accomodate the optics. EF-RF for example is 44 to 20mm. 24mm of space.

    So CA, purple fringing, sharpness + contrast falloff as at the edges, distortion, lens breathing, flaring and slightly off color temps in the set are what people are gushing over? If you apply these aspects to any other newer Chinese lens manufacturer (where these cooks are made) would people be praising or fawning so heavily at them, especially at this price? I'm not saying they look bad or that I don't like them, but if you were just to listen to the description of the "performance" aspects without hearing the famous brand name I bet many would write them off immediately. Again, not saying I don't like them, just find the progression of having lenses with all these flaws back in the day and then companies making lenses that correct a lot of the "flaws" and now people want the flaws again at an inflated price with a better name. Brain fart babble over.

    I wish ARRI would have made the LPL even shorter, thus leaving RF/E/whatever in the photo market realms. PL/LPL is so much better compared to any photo style mount. They are just inappropriate to the realms of proper cine/video production, and won't really survive a set, at least the quality will degrade due to the wobble that appears in the mount throwing the shimming off

    • @alexlubensky
      @alexlubensky 10 месяцев назад

      But whoa, these look really good. Certainly not for every market with this price point of an almost used Arri UP (which has plenty of options to buy), but really - I'd take them as my main lens set of an owner op any day over any other lens set out there. They just pop!
