Ennui: a feeling of listlessness and dissatisfaction arising from a lack of occupation or excitement. like boredom but worse, like a loney depressed sickening boredom
@@Diorm Commonly in English French words are used as an intense counterpart to what they translate to in English. So for example, there’s Black, and then there’s Noir, which hits different in English and conveys a darker dark than “black” does, if that makes any sense. I think the sad people represent the stages or aspects of depression. The demons and lies that depressed people have to deal with. Notice how each person is alone and cold, they have such distaste for each other because they can't face the ugliness they represent. Like the guitar guy represents self-loafing and how he hates himself. The green dude on the keyboard is projection of that self-loafing and his own flaws onto others. The dude on the mouse was the part of him that tries to run from his demons using crass humor. They all paint a picture of a depressed introvert who's afraid of the outside world, but they all showed tiny shards of a little thing called hope. the all seemed to realize the error of their mindsets, like the guitar man who realized that if he truly hated himself he wouldn't care enough to write a song about himself. I think this game is all about a single man reflecting on his depression and coming to an decision, that's what the camera in the window represents, self examination. In the end I think he comes to an realization: he's that cause of his own depression, these aspects of himself that reject each other, that are alone, need to come together and accept each other, as he needs to accept them as part of himself. "when I woke up, I was still tired, but I had to start the day..." I think that could be interpreted in many ways, but I think it means he realized that enough is enough, its time for him to stop his self-loafing and accept these aspects of himself and turn over a new leaf, that it's time for him to face the day and begin living and enjoying life. TL;DR A depressed man/woman takes some to to reflect and gets through his/her depression by accepting the facets of him/herself and coming to terms with them. They then decide to turn over a new leaf and start enjoying life.
BLU Scout Sad photographer is sad, but then, after some soul searching, sad photographer decided to accept that the parts of himself that made him sad instead of rejecting them. The game is about a person going through troubling times. Each... Person is a reference to a part of their inner self. The person deals with it by dreaming of tiny people who feel the same as him. But awakes to find them gone. Most likely depression as stated by the one on the door handle. They makes them tiny to represent how big they think their problems are but actually they are a huge threat represented by the end of the game. The "void" refers to their inner self (I think). They also state things that happened to them in the past. I'm young and I'm making possible theories so don't judge but that's what I think so bye :)
I agree with you up to the last two lines. Perhaps "the void" is in fact real life or the outside world, making the room inside the person's mind. The camera at the end is somehow the person waking up to realize that they are actually taking pictures to look into their own mind through dreaming. Personally, i believe these problems are what face people when they realize and truly try to grasp what reality is about and i admit myself echoing the thoughts of these tiny people. I think that is what makes this game so powerful and relatable. Either way, the ability of the creator to first realize these thoughts, and to then be able to effectively show them in his chosen media is genius.
This game is deep, very deep. It touches down on the tiny little mental problems that a lot of people face. Each different personality with their own individual problem. I never really knew myself how to interpret it, but this game does it perfectly. Many of you, including myself, probably related to at least one of those.

I don't know why, but what you said at the end actually made me cry. I related all too well with those tiny figures. I've been feeling miserable lately; like there's nothing left to life except waking up, working the entire day and waiting to sleep to do it all over again. But hearing you say you believe in me really hurts, but in a good way. In a way that might help push me to be better again.
This game made me tear up. I used to have depression, and it was like every part of it was a living demon haunting and watching me in places I couldn't see. I'm pretty sure the moral of it was supposed to be don't sweat the small stuff in life because of how insignificant or small the problem may have been in reality
This. This is why I love Markiplier. He plays games that no one else does. He doesn't do things purely for views. There was no shooting, no jumpscares and very little humor in this video, but I still loved it. I would have never even heard of this game without him. Thanks for the great content mark. Keep it up, you are becoming the best on RUclips.
This game seems to have a rather deep meaning (At least in my interpretation.) Think about it.... foc/us..... it spells focus, but the "us" is separated, so focus on us. Those little people could represent a small piece of all of us. Jealousy, worries, anger, hatred, the desire to be accepted, squashed by the immensity of everyday problems, hanging onto dear life by a thread, grasping for the light as everything seems to pass us by, eventually slipping and falling into the void (death). Sad? Perhaps.... but remember that these people are tiny. Does this mean that we're tiny in relation to life's problems? Maybe... or it means that these are only tiny parts of us; parts that we can overcome. In the wise words of Benny: "But who are you?"
Hosefa GameCrew ...Thought that was a beautiful reflection from part of Ethan and I couldn't have put it better, what Jerry said also crossed my mind if for the most negligible moment :P
Ben Gordon I don't believe it's actually from an anime, I think it's a drawing someone made of their roleplay character or something. I just love it because it matches one of my roleplay characters from hair to eyes to even dress and the fact there is red roses! (she is a rose, I'm making an animation of it sometime so right now you are probably really confused. XD)
That was really deep. A man goes about his flat, scrutinizing the different facets and insecurities of his life and personality, then after seeing it all he is face with the fear of having them scrutinized by others, and it makes him very small. For someone who's had to struggle with manic-depression in the past, this game speaks volumes (if you can technically call it a game).
I was thinking that, I suffer depression and thought the game covers all the doubts that you have and the fear of others scrutinizing you, I think some of the characters were also the defense mechanisms that are put in place to make people believe you are ok.
Maybe. Maybe they're you. Each and every one of them is the "tiny part of your life" where you fell to sadness, desperation, anxiety, anger, or loneliness. But it is only when we go back and "focus" on these things is when we are brought down into our own "void". I'm sure alot of us can relate to this, and to me, I think this game was made to make us realize we shouldn't spend time looking back knowing there is too much out there to miss.
I think this game was supposed to show that all our problems are actually small compared to the rest of the world. If you focus too much on your problems, you lose sight of how big and wonderful the world is, and forget that there are people who care enough to - as it were - FOCUS their attention and listen to you. Thanks for the video Mark... and brush that hair! Hahaha. Stay awesome everyone and Happy Valentine's.
You are a RUclipsr sent from the heavens. That's not what I think of you as though. You treat fans like friends... Family.. Or even closer. You made me happy with that thing you said near the end. People are like "Ok. Hope you enjoyed.. See ya bye. next video. Y'know. Whatever" But you care. You aren't like others. I hope you beat Pewds in the battle for most subs(even though it's not a battle and you guys are probably friends) because you deserve them.. For your caring. Thank you ,Mark, for every day you have brought my spirit up and made me happy.
whoa... i can relate to the green one laying on the door handle, i feel as tho life is nothing but just a recycled process. we're born, we go school, get a piece of paper that says you know how to do shit, go to school again or get a job, find that special someone, get married, get a house, have kids so that way they can grow up big and strong just so they can do same thing as you did, over and over, again and again until the end of the universe... i think im gonna go lay down now...
yeah but youre missing all the good parts. i mean, sure, in the big picture my life means nothing and no one would probably care if i died tomorrow, but i just bought a sparkler and ive got wifi. appreciate the little things.
This whole game was just too relatable. And the ending gave me chills all down my spine. I was very impressed with this. I didn't have very high hopes to begin with, but this game left me in awe. There is so much to think about. So much more than what's just at face value. I'm amazed.
Is it bad that i can identify myself with every single one of these guys? Yep. It's official. I'm bonkers. See ya around, I'm gonna play patty cake with a bottle of mead.
After you read the note that said "He'll say no" and you looked at the ground I started laughing. I can just imagine the little guy writing a note, jumping off, slamming into the ground, breaking both legs, and writing "In hindsight, not my best decision."
Foc sounding like doc would be the same sound as the Latin word fac that is the bossy form of the Latin word facere, which means to do, ie to do us so same meaning in a way
When Mark look the camera and say "I Love You" did fangirls say "I Love You Too"? I need to know because I don't want to be the only one! I love you Mark♥♥♥
I related to few of these little guys, specifically because I've been dealing with a lot of anxiety this year. Don't really think it's critical, but, then again I don't believe in medicine unless it's completely necessary. Anyway, watching Markiplier and others like him lightens up my day, so cheers for that!
I've came back to this video after 6 long years. I just randomly remember watching this as a kid and playing it myself. watching it now I realize that these tiny people and their emotions are so relatable; each in thier own ways. I hope to come back to this video in the future but until then I'll always remember the lows these tiny people have.
I think the idea behind the game, are common problems and emotions that most people face or feel on daily basis. However we just need to focus sometimes on these issues to see them for what they are and help resolve it. Then move onto the next...nice hidden meaning to the game. :3
Maybe this game is about how problems are small until we put them into focus. Like people look normal so you never notice them but they're all dealing with a lot...
interesting game Mark, and I can kind of relate to some of the little characters in this one I have been depressed at times (nothing severe, but like everyone else I have my ups and downs) and your vids always cheer me up whenever I get to watch them, so thanks for that I appreciate all the work you put in for each and every one of your videos. I'm glad I stumbled across your channel when I was bored and surfing youtube one day, best mistake I ever made...true story ;)
Is it weird I related to most of those guys? Or sad? I feel really overwhelmed by a lot of things as of late. I barely even have time to do the things I want to do like exersize, or write because of all the other important junk I have to do everyday like clock work. Even when I get home I have to help every darn person in my house like a slave, and its not that I don't like helping people its just getting out of hand.... I dunno, maybe I'm just talking out of my @$$ and I should grow up or something..
Thank you Markiplier, I believe in you too. It's something that you hear time to time and you may think nothing of it after a while, but when you need it. It means a lot, thank you. I try to be helpful with my friends this way, but it can really start to weigh you down after a while. You're doing a good thing with what you have and I can't thank you enough. Sending out good vibes all the time is tiring, keep up the good work and as always, we'll see you next time.
This wasn't even a game, it was an interactive diary. I mean you were just walking around, finding little people and listening to their misery. No dispect to the creator, but this should have been an animation, not a "game".
I agree that this would have been much better as an animation. I can see what the creator was aiming for though. In an animation you can only observe, in a game you can choose. He also probably wanted the user to have fun looking for them. Still, I liked the idea and would love to see it turned into a story/animation.
I don't think so. They're just catalysts for self-analysis; like, any normal person would've involuntary started thinking about their own lives just from watching/playing this. Too many inconsistencies for it to be one person.
i feel that the small people represented the voices within our heads
And the camera is the same thing as focusing on our problems, or something like this?

Interesting game, as you said. Thank you for playing this 2014 Mark~
I'm pretty sure the moral of it was supposed to be don't sweat the small stuff in life because of how insignificant or small the problem may have been in reality
Really? Because I think it's the opposite. Other peoples problems seem small to you, but if you put it into focus...
Bass Canon oh thats mother good way of seeing it! i didn't really think of that!
Foc/us sounds like Fuck us.
Tee Hee
That's what I thought he said at first.
Hosefa GameCrew ...Thought that was a beautiful reflection from part of Ethan and I couldn't have put it better, what Jerry said also crossed my mind if for the most negligible moment :P
HOW THE HELL DID THIS GET IN THE COMMENTS i thought something like this would be in a book
WOAH. Mind=BLOWN
The more purge ads I see the more I don't want to see that movie! Ugh
lol
Ah, all those movies are awful.
same! too many ads ruin it, not that I wanted to see it in the first place, or did it stop me from having go see it. :/
I keep getting a Chicago MED movie ad. I DO NOT WANT TO FKING WATCH THE MOVIE LET ME WATCH MARKLIPLIER AND KUBZ SCOUTS AND ALL THAT >:-/
when I watch kubz I keep getting the new Tim Burton movie ads
*looks into eyes* I love you too Mark!
Oh and btw I love when you play these kinds of games, it makes me remember not everyone is heartless. :)
What anime is your profile picture from.
XD)
Ok thanks 😄
I was reading that comment right as mark was saying that
That was really deep.
I haven't thought about this game in over 5 years and this morning I just randomly thought about it for some reason, so here I am
This makes me wonder if there is little people living around our house........watching our every move..........
That was definetly an interesting video game
whoa... i can relate to the green one laying on the door handle, i feel as tho life is nothing but just a recycled process. we're born, we go school, get a piece of paper that says you know how to do shit, go to school again or get a job, find that special someone, get married, get a house, have kids so that way they can grow up big and strong just so they can do same thing as you did, over and over, again and again until the end of the universe... i think im gonna go lay down now...
Huh, maybe you'll like the song "Little Boxes".
Bubba Fights it's a good song, thanks for the recommendation.
yeah but youre missing all the good parts. i mean, sure, in the big picture my life means nothing and no one would probably care if i died tomorrow, but i just bought a sparkler and ive got wifi. appreciate the little things.
*grunkle Stan voice* I can relate to this.
This whole game was just too relatable. And the ending gave me chills all down my spine. I was very impressed with this. I didn't have very high hopes to begin with, but this game left me in awe. There is so much to think about. So much more than what's just at face value. I'm amazed.
"Cecil is in the garbage can having a crisis"
Dan howell ladies and gentlemen
10:47 Who else squealed with happiness10:53 This face But damn this game is relatable. I like Heath though XD
Very interesting game!!
*****
oh, you TOTALLY needed that line at the end!
(sarcasm)
yeah, i guess your right. the one thing youtube doesn't need right now is another flame war because of a joke.
Heh xD
*****
Is it bad that i can identify myself with every single one of these guys?
Yep. It's official. I'm bonkers.
See ya around, I'm gonna play patty cake with a bottle of mead.
Wasn't expecting this to be an emotional game
i have that same rug in the beginning of the game!!! 😶
Cool, watch out for tiny blocky people!
ĴÁŚ ĞÁŃĎ lol I have that rug too
Raises both my hands. ends up starting "the wave" in class
7:03 is a perfect representation of everyone on the internet
After you read the note that said "He'll say no" and you looked at the ground I started laughing. I can just imagine the little guy writing a note, jumping off, slamming into the ground, breaking both legs, and writing "In hindsight, not my best decision."
Then: pffffffffft how can these people feel like that?
Now: most relatable thing ever
*awkwardly raises hand*
*Raises Hand* *starts crying because I can relate to all of them*
Only British people will get this...
Foc/us = foc* us xD
Well it's a common phrase for us, so we would've got it straight away :/ also, no need to be rude.
LeRiA Is it just me or did I read "f--- us"?
Foc sounding like doc would be the same sound as the Latin word fac that is the bossy form of the Latin word facere, which means to do, ie to do us so same meaning in a way
+Murasakiiro I wonder why its a common phrase? I mean it's not like were idiots.
+Aura Rose (Auro) yep
When Mark look the camera and say "I Love You" did fangirls say "I Love You Too"? I need to know because I don't want to be the only one! I love you Mark♥♥♥
don't worry I did too! :D :(
10/10
oh my goodness
Even tho it's late but, still gonna point out that's cringey cause even Mark made a cringe face following the remark 10:52
I related to few of these little guys, specifically because I've been dealing with a lot of anxiety this year. Don't really think it's critical, but, then again I don't believe in medicine unless it's completely necessary. Anyway, watching Markiplier and others like him lightens up my day, so cheers for that!
The issues mentioned were very much from the harder parts of life, the roads we walk alone sometimes. And we all know how hard that can be.
I hope you get over your anxiety man.
General_Izod hey, thanks. :3
ohhh nice fanart ^^
thx i made it
Really
yes im suprised he used it!
Well it matnificent and I wish I was as good as u
thnk you i appreciat it
10:08... **Slowly Raises Hand**
HOW WAS THIS TWO YEARS AGO THIS CAME OUT LIKE YESTERDAY
wait so you got a notification that it came out not to long ago. that's strange
I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic but she means that this video feels like it came out yesterday
💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵🔫😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
so true
This has to be the most beautiful game you have ever played Mark.
Ennui - a feeling of listlessness and dissatisfaction arising from a lack of occupation or excitement.
I think somebody searched google :)
what if we had our own little people who listened to our problems without us knowing?
That... has surprisingly given me comfort. Thank you.
Comrade Catastrophe no problem, i just think we all have people out there who hear us ^.^
I've came back to this video after 6 long years.
These characters seem to represent different mind sets, conflicting with each other. *Insert philosophical rant here*
@ 6:30
Owes him 10 bucks?
Dinner for a week?
Gas station dinners.
OH GOD AND ALL THE FEELS COME RUSHING IN AS I REALIZE MY LIFE AND WHERE I'VE GONE
Maybe this game is about how problems are small until we put them into focus. Like people look normal so you never notice them but they're all dealing with a lot...
I relate a lot to the guy lying on the door handle.
interesting game Mark, and I can kind of relate to some of the little characters in this one I have been depressed at times (nothing severe, but like everyone else I have my ups and downs) and your vids always cheer me up whenever I get to watch them, so thanks for that I appreciate all the work you put in for each and every one of your videos. I'm glad I stumbled across your channel when I was bored and surfing youtube one day, best mistake I ever made...true story ;)
*shamefully raises hand*
Is it weird I related to most of those guys? Or sad? I feel really overwhelmed by a lot of things as of late. I barely even have time to do the things I want to do like exersize, or write because of all the other important junk I have to do everyday like clock work. Even when I get home I have to help every darn person in my house like a slave, and its not that I don't like helping people its just getting out of hand.... I dunno, maybe I'm just talking out of my @$$ and I should grow up or something..
*slowly raises hand* ....
*Shoots everyone with raised hand*
Rednidedni *hand blown off**it sparks* Thanks!! Now, the mechanic is gonna have to fix this! XD
*Shoots your face*
Rednidedni *it bounces off* Okay now that can't be shot...
*shoots your everything*
Dang, I've had experienced all those feelings before. So many memories, dark, dark, memories.
Maybe the little people are extensions of the main characters thoughts and feelings.
*raises hand* c:
Vannilein this is how you make a smiley face :D
I think, this one looks better.
It's so adorable and creepy at the same time c: xD

That's very good at the time
I feel silly for blushing when he looked into the camera and said, "I love you..." o///o b-but anyway - this game is pretty interesting!
10:55 I LOVE YOU TOO MARKIMOO ❤
*grabs my arm off* *holds up my arm with my other arm while laughing so loud my windows are shattered*
I love it how the maker of this game included a gay (though broken up?) couple. High five to you, whoever you are.
This game made me think
It's kinda sad you need a game to do that.
Congrats on that first-timer.
Ah a YT comment wouldn't be complete without sarcastic/douchy replies :')
:) I love thouse

This wasn't even a game, it was an interactive diary. I mean you were just walking around, finding little people and listening to their misery. No dispect to the creator, but this should have been an animation, not a "game".
I agree that this would have been much better as an animation. I can see what the creator was aiming for though. In an animation you can only observe, in a game you can choose. He also probably wanted the user to have fun looking for them. Still, I liked the idea and would love to see it turned into a story/animation.
I think the people represented the different personalities of the guy
Kiran Seusanker that's what I thought :P
I don't think so. They're just catalysts for self-analysis; like, any normal person would've involuntary started thinking about their own lives just from watching/playing this. Too many inconsistencies for it to be one person.
Isn't that 'Angry White Guy' or what his bitch ass is called on your pic?
Damn well near ten years later, and this is still a great video. Amazing how timeless Markiplier's content is.
People who think up these games are so smart but i somehow think that they relate more to the game then those that would play it.
