It is well documented that although she did have drinks, she rarely finished them. What you are seeing is the affect the years of taking highly addictive medication, first given to her in her teens by the studios and then on and off with "doctors" swirling all around her. She's as much a victim as she is accountable.
This is conflating multiple issues, the medications she was giving by the studios were not the cause of her behavior in this interview but her use of barbiturates which began at a later date. Now I guess to a certain extent it's not a stretch to assume that one beget the other but that's not a certainty, there's no doubt what the studios did was harmful but it's just impossible to say for certain that it's also to blame for her barbiturate addiction and ultimate demise.
Not the studio, it was her mother that started her on those, the epitome of a pushy brutal stage mother. I read somewhere that she was first given them when she was doing the gumm sisters acts with her sisters around the age of 8 or 9.
It's interesting was Judy said about Deanna Durbin. 'A hairy thick eyebrow. Very strange. Deanna Durbin was a very stunning woman & successful actress. I love Deanna Durbin. Judy's comments about Elizabeth Taylor were inappropriate. Very interesting.
Drunk or not this woman was and still is a legend. Her voice was so distinctive. I've become a huge fan 50 years after she died which says it all. Once a legend always a legend x

She went on to play the Palace Theatre, which she reopened in 1951, one last time, that August, to great acclaim.

After nigh on forty years of working (yes, her career was work), having to take prescribed medication to function and intermittent poor health, she was by the time of this interview worn out. But, for some it is easier to dismiss Garland as a drunk or druggy because they haven't the intelligence to see beneath the surface. I believe, her own acute intelligence is threatening to some people; her wonderful humour in this clip is as intact as ever.
The most incredible live performance I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot of them) was Judy at the Hollywood Bowl. It was her comeback to Hollywood after her amazing comeback at Carnegie Hall. I don't know how I managed to convince my mother to take me. There were 20,000 people there and it rained. In Los Angeles, whenever it rains, everybody runs for shelter but NOBODY left. I remember seeing the tears of the big red-faced Texan who sat next to me mixing with the rain on his face. I will never forget that night.
She had raw talent, such a wonderful human. I love how she always takes a bow as she enters and exits the stage...she loved performing and always greeted her fans with a thank you. So unlike the performers today.

What people forget or don't know is that one year later, in Spring-Summer 1968, Judy checked herself into a 3-week outpatient drug treatment program at Brigham Hospital in Boston for addiction to morphine & one other drug. That's all there was at the time. She also worked with a NY doctor to get herself down to 2 sleeping pills per night. Remember Judy's children, Lorna & Joe, left Judy to live with Dad because they couldn't cope with her. Sadly, she still drank & she overdosed.

Judy had a sh*t childhood and died so early because of it. Poor, sweet girl. I'm not famous, but I do know how hard it is to spend your life chasing acceptance. It's how I live every day. And it completely sucks! RIP Judy....

They had her working on movies constantly because she signed contracts and was the main bread winner for the family.
She was my grandfather and fathers favorite, they absolutely loved her ... what amazed me about her besides her incredible singing and acting was that she had a fabulous comedic talent and that she survived all that life dished up ..... Yes and they got her smoking, I believe, a few packs of cigarettes a day, as a teenager, to control her appetite. So she got hooked on them too. I wonder if she had not died from an overdose, would she have died of cancer eventually

The coroner released a statement saying she died from an accidental overdose, and he said the rumor of alcoholism is not true. Her liver was normal, with no signs of cirrhosis, or any other alcoholic disease. Yet here you are saying she had cirrhosis. I was alive when she died. I watched the news about her death. But I guess you know more than the coroner who performed her autopsy.

Judy Garland wasn't the first Hollywood star to die of drug and alcohol abuse. She was, however, the first star to literally have her tragic deterioration captured on videotape and film. Her triumphs and tragedies were recorded on film. Judy died in front of our eyes. To her credit, so many people were touched by her passing. Many people felt for her and wished they could have helped her. Judy's body of work was and remains incredible..that is what is important. Her gifts are still treasured and bring pleasure to many.
Deanna McDaniel Yes possibly, but I think at this point in her life/career, she had some neurological as well as emotional damage from years of drinking and hooked on pills, starting on the set of The Wizard Of Oz to keep weight off and keeping her awake to do 16 hrs. a day on set. I don’t think, in my own personal opinion she was drunk in this interview, just nervous energy from years of ingesting these concoctions.

She seemed to be able to hold her own in conversations, but she seemed to have a hard time walking and acted like she wasn’t sure where she was supposed to go. She was still taking the pills. She tried to stop more than once, but wasn’t able to stop on her own and there weren’t rehab programs back then. So the world lost her to an accidental drug overdose at the young age of 47.
I know I've read 2 biographies and sat through countless TV documentaries about her. In one of the biographies it recounts a Las Vegas performance where she was too drunk to perform & the angry 1950's Vegas crowd simply would not have it; Judy walked off stage and grabbed 11 year old Liza to perform the rest of her set. It is recalled that Liza was a repeat success of her mother's nearly prodigious childhood achievements that night, wowing/fascinating the evening's crowd to a standing ovation!

mstalcup I don’t know if this show was live or recorded, but I noticed @4.10 Mr Paar glanced nervously offstage (presumably to the director), seemingly worried that Miss Garland might say something outrageous that might get them taken off the air. In 1967 of course, censorship was still pretty strict about what was allowed on TV.
Frank Albert ......I’m with you, get over yourselves. How does it help you, or her legacy, to judge her so harshly, and point out her state of mind as being altered? We’re looking at an ordinary person in an extraordinary situation. Who also happened to be blessed (or cursed) with a gift to communicate through her voice that makes her one the most important, and talented singers of the 20th century. Her gift, combined with her life story is compelling on several levels, and to marginalize her as just drunk, reflects much more poorly on you than her.

Thank you for posting this incredible piece of history. Today I visited the Judy Garland Museum and her home until the age of three - it left me missing Judy's performances and engaging personality. She truly was a star and a tragic story as well.

If you knew ALL her history you would know that she went through hell and back by this point. She had brain and neurological damage from years of drug use, weight issues, nervous breakdowns, and at one point she was intubated and in a comatose state. She had survived more barbiturate overdoses than any one else could endure. This is what aged her and affected her mannerisms and her way of speaking. But that brilliant mind and wit was there until the very end. She lived on borrowed time and was a genius. She never ever went on talk shows “high” or “drunk”. Do your homework, read books by her children and spouse and you’ll know the TRUTH. Don’t assume and destroy the legacy of this gem.

I remember when the news of her death was announced in 1969. I was eight years old and playing with my hot wheels on the kitchen floor and my mom was in the laundry room adjoining. She was devastated. Judy was her beau ideal of an entertainer--the "whole package" as she said. My mom was so deeply saddened that Miss Garland could never find a healing, happy place. She, like so many performers before and since, were gone from our lives too soon. A lot of people made a whole hell of a lot of money off of her talents, and no one seemed to step up and care for her when she was at her lowest.
It is incredible that after all the decades past I still want to go back in time and help her.. That was part of her gift I suppose the ability to move anyone in her presence that way. I am guessing she could not be saved.. I was fortunate enough to meet Liza a few years ago 2010. After staring into the most beautiful brown eyes I gave her an enormous hug. I could feel the energy bouncing off her. In that moment I understood the energy her Mother must of had. 1967 was to be yet another comeback year for Judy .. "Valley of the Dolls" from which she was fired A string of successful concerts including yet another stay at the New York Palace theater.. ABC records recorded it.. but it was not to be.. We can debate each other forever.. The real truth is she was a talent a treasure a superstar ....

i didnt understand everything bc I'm still learning English and it's hard bc of the quality but I think I liked the interviewer. it seemed like he'd care about her. I also liked that he talked about himself, I felt like he just wanted to make it as comfortable as possible for judy. when she walked in and then out he hold her so she wouldn't fall and he didn't ask any dumb questions. the way he talks to her just seems very caring and nice. it's just my own opinion
She’s wonderful but I’d be shocked if anyone doesn’t realize she’s absolutely wasted here. She could barely walk out on stage, notice that Parr had to go back and steady her. Plus he controlled nearly all of the conversation and she said actually very little. My heart breaks for her.
Dennis Loniak some of it was Adrenal Fatigue from so many pills...it’s amazing if you can even get out of bed to go anywhere! Considering her mother had been drugging her since the age of 9, it’s amazing she lasted as long as she did!

Only functional & Integrative medical practitioners or naturopaths will do testing for it today! It makes it difficult to even get out of bed...so this makes perfect sense why she couldn’t get to places on time! Unless you’ve been through it...you wouldn’t know how bad it is or recognize it! I’m guessing she had it for years & no one knew...if they had let her eat like a normal person, she might have recovered.

DON'T FORGET PEOPLE HER LEGACY WAS THAT SHE WAS A TRULY AN AMAZING SINGER AND ACTRESS. Addiction is A Horrible Thing!!! I'm sure we all know somebody that has died from an Overdose either from pills or alcohol!! What people forget or don't know is that one year later, in Spring-Summer 1968, Judy checked herself into a 3-week outpatient drug treatment program at Brigham Hospital in Boston for addiction to morphine & one other drug. That's all there was at the time. She also worked with a NY doctor to get herself down to 2 sleeping pills per night. Remember Judy's children, Lorna & Joe, left Judy to live with Dad because they couldn't cope with her. Sadly, she still drank & she overdosed.

@@debraevans3398 I read that too. Her mom wasn't any better she had her hooked on diet pills at an early age because she thought "Judy was fat". It's also true about the studios and the drugs. They had her working on movies constantly because she signed contracts and was the main bread winner for the family.
She was my grandfather and fathers favorite, they absolutely loved her ... what amazed me about her besides her incredible singing and acting was that she had a fabulous comedic talent and that she survived all that life dished up ..... Liza who was also fabulous had to sit through Ellen sending her up which I thought was unkind ... these two woman had more talent in their little fingers !
Jack was always a good friend to Judy, and would often say how much he loved having her on the Tonight Show as a guest. After this introduction he quickly sums up Judy’s demeanour as she staggered onto the stage, and held her arm until she was firmly seated.
Years of uppers unwittingly given to her and others by studio docs got her hooked. The booze was to take off the nervous edge that increases over the years. You do this, you end up:

An Addict
Sick
A wreck
in the late 50s she got off the drugs. Her weight ballooned. No one in show business wanted her. She ended up getting back on to lose weight and have that powerful energy.

The coroner released a statement saying she died from an accidental overdose, and he said the rumor of alcoholism is not true. Her liver was normal, with no signs of cirrhosis, or any other alcoholic disease. Yet here you are saying she had cirrhosis. I was alive when she died. I watched the news about her death. But I guess you know more than the coroner who performed her autopsy.

I don't understand how she never lost her voice or her composure under the influence.
Judy Garland wasn't the first Hollywood star to die of drug and alcohol abuse. She was, however, the first star to literally have her tragic deterioration captured on videotape and film. Her triumphs and tragedies were recorded on film. Judy died in front of our eyes. To her credit, so many people were touched by her passing. Many people felt for her and wished they could have helped her. Judy's body of work was and remains incredible..that is what is important. Her gifts are still treasured and bring pleasure to many.

Yes possibly, but I think at this point in her life/career, she had some neurological as well as emotional damage from years of drinking and hooked on pills, starting on the set of The Wizard Of Oz to keep weight off and keeping her awake to do 16 hrs. a day on set. I don’t think, in my own personal opinion she was drunk in this interview, just nervous energy from years of ingesting these concoctions.

She seemed to be able to hold her own in conversations, but she seemed to have a hard time walking and acted like she wasn’t sure where she was supposed to go. She was still taking the pills. She tried to stop more than once, but wasn’t able to stop on her own and there weren’t rehab programs back then. So the world lost her to an accidental drug overdose at the young age of 47.

I've read 2 biographies and sat through countless TV documentaries about her.
In one of the biographies it recounts a Las Vegas performance where she was too drunk to perform & the angry 1950's Vegas crowd simply would not have it; Judy walked off stage and grabbed 11 year old Liza to perform the rest of her set. It is recalled that Liza was a repeat success of her mother's nearly prodigious childhood achievements that night, wowing/fascinating the evening's crowd to a standing ovation!
I agree totally--she's a bright shining fragile star--more help should have been available to her back then. Then she might still be with us.

mstalcup I don’t know if this show was live or recorded, but I noticed @4.10 Mr Paar glanced nervously offstage (presumably to the director), seemingly worried that Miss Garland might say something outrageous that might get them taken off the air. In 1967 of course, censorship was still pretty strict about what was allowed on TV.
Frank Albert ......I’m with you, get over yourselves. How does it help you, or her legacy, to judge her so harshly, and point out her state of mind as being altered? We’re looking at an ordinary person in an extraordinary situation. Who also happened to be blessed (or cursed) with a gift to communicate through her voice that makes her one the most important, and talented singers of the 20th century. Her gift, combined with her life story is compelling on several levels, and to marginalize her as just drunk, reflects much more poorly on you than her.

Thank you for posting this incredible piece of history. Today I visited the Judy Garland Museum and her home until the age of three - it left me missing Judy's performances and engaging personality. She truly was a star and a tragic story as well.
It seems like her mouth won't move as fast as her brain is moving - haven't we all been there? Through the fog she's as sharp and funny as ever. I love the tag line to the Munchkins story - "Poor things...but I expect they get residuals". She was so funny.

I always feel sad for judy Garland her life was sad she was treated terribly throughout her life and she seemed like a lovely lady God rest her beautiful soul🙏❤
All you fools that keep calling her drunk or high are just that - FOOLS! This was 2 years before her death. Judy was brilliant, smart-witted and quick to reply and never lost her train of thought. If you knew ALL her history you would know that she went through hell and back by this point. She had brain and neurological damage from years of drug use, weight issues, nervous breakdowns, and at one point she was intubated and in a comatose state. She had survived more barbiturate overdoses than any one else could endure. This is what aged her and affected her mannerisms and her way of speaking. But that brilliant mind and wit was there until the very end. She lived on borrowed time and was a genius. She never ever went on talk shows “high” or “drunk”. Do your homework, read books by her children and spouse and you’ll know the TRUTH. Don’t assume and destroy the legacy of this gem.

I remember when the news of her death was announced in 1969. I was eight years old and playing with my hot wheels on the kitchen floor and my mom was in the laundry room adjoining. She was devastated. Judy was her beau ideal of an entertainer--the "whole package" as she said. My mom was so deeply saddened that Miss Garland could never find a healing, happy place. She, like so many performers before and since, were gone from our lives too soon. A lot of people made a whole hell of a lot of money off of her talents, and no one seemed to step up and care for her when she was at her lowest.
It is incredible that after all the decades past I still want to go back in time and help her.. That was part of her gift I suppose the ability to move anyone in her presence that way. I am guessing she could not be saved.. I was fortunate enough to meet Liza a few years ago 2010. After staring into the most beautiful brown eyes I gave her an enormous hug. I could feel the energy bouncing off her. In that moment I understood the energy her Mother must of had. 1967 was to be yet another comeback year for Judy .. "Valley of the Dolls" from which she was fired A string of successful concerts including yet another stay at the New York Palace theater.. ABC records recorded it.. but it was not to be.. We can debate each other forever.. The real truth is she was a talent a treasure a superstar ....

I remember listening to Judy singing the lyric "youth is so terribly fleeting" on the way to work at McDonalds when I was 16. I saw her death at 47 as being years away, and incredibly old. Now I'm 44, and the her death seems so incredibly young. It's amazing how relative "youth" is. Thanks for posting this nice clip. It makes me very reflective.

i didnt understand everything bc I'm still learning English and it's hard bc of the quality but I think I liked the interviewer. it seemed like he'd care about her. I also liked that he talked about himself, I felt like he just wanted to make it as comfortable as possible for judy. when she walked in and then out he hold her so she wouldn't fall and he didn't ask any dumb questions. the way he talks to her just seems very caring and nice. it's just my own opinion
He did have a deep fondness for Judy. You can see the same behavior in previous interviews he did with her.

Dennis Loniak some of it was Adrenal Fatigue from so many pills...it’s amazing if you can even get out of bed to go anywhere! Considering her mother had been drugging her since the age of 9, it’s amazing she lasted as long as she did!
Corinne Hernandez it was probably a very bad case of Adrenal Fatigue from the pills...since being drugged from the age of nine! Only functional & Integrative medical practitioners or naturopaths will do testing for it today! It makes it difficult to even get out of bed...so this makes perfect sense why she couldn’t get to places on time! Unless you’ve been through it...you wouldn’t know how bad it is or recognize it! I’m guessing she had it for years & no one knew...if they had let her eat like a normal person, she might have recovered.

Poor Judy...she was stolen from. She worked so hard and suffered so much and her mother and the studio starting her on pills as a kid. She should have gotten the money she worked for instead of people taking advantage of her the way they did. She had a great sense of humor and a wonderful laugh!
