I love the fact that these people were real and lived at one time, and talented, with humor, singing, dancing and acting. i love it; judy, martha, mel, june.
Despite the fact that one of Martha's husbands, composer David Rose, left her for a young Judy Garland, Judy and Martha remained close friends. This clip is priceless and showed how spontaneous and funny Raye was.
Wow! They almost don't make dames/performers like this anymore! I'm amazed how well Judy's and Martha's vocals blend together. One wouldn't think of them sounding so great together (their comedic timing is impeccable-esp Martha's!)! Thank you so much for posting this fantastic jewel!
and what big voices they had. i've always got idea's for old hollywood movie stars to still do some movies that i've created in my head; a movie with judy and martha wouldn't that be awesome.
OMG. First I am just digging Judy singing At Last. A song sung by Etta James. And I am being swept away by Judy's rendition then all of a sudden ....BAM!! Too funny. Judy's expression and then changing the words at the end. Classic. Thanks for sharing this. Cannot wait to show my mom.🎶
It drives me crazy that no one remember Mel Torme anymore. He was great. The Judy Garland Show was really a great show and how she made fun that the network would cut their funding or the show at any moment and Jerry Van Dyke was good as the floor manager guy.
Jacqueline Paul Mel Torme wrote an unflattering account of his time on that show and I wish I hadn’t read it. They look like they’re having a ball here. Their voices blended beautifully but I don’t remember very many duets, possibly because he didn’t suggest them.
All these great entertainers!!! Goes to show that Judy was brilliant even in rehearsal!!! And the great sounds of the Big Bands of the 40's. THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!!!
It's amazing that they were singing songs that were only 20 or so years old at the time. It would be like 2 celeb singers singing the standards of 1992-3 today. Now these songs that Judy & Martha are crooning are 70 years old some of them.
Have the two box sets of the complete Judy Garland Show. I think it's a shame, that CBS canceled her after only 1 Season. Thank God this wasn't destroyed by CBS. Love the outtakes made during shooting rack episode. This one with Judy and Martha, they made it half way through. The guy holding their cue cards messed up, and Judy stopped the band, and got mad at the cue card guy.
How wonderful! Martha could have enjoyed a great singing career--she was Anita O'Day's inspiration--but her comic career took her in another direction. Judy of course is peerless, even in rehearsal.
Looking at Garland, here at 42 yo, and 5 years away from death, she seems so well, so healthy, so unlike what was apparently going on behind the scenes. Love Martha Raye....ever since I saw here as a kid in some Abbott and Costello film, and she had a pair of legs that were amazing. Ongoing competition during the war was btw her and Bety Grable as to the best legs. Her life story, I understand, was done in the Bette Midler film, with James Caan, where she sings "For the Boys"!
Judy Garland and Martha Raye had both been married to composer David Rose (The Stripper) . Martha Raye was a very gifted singer. A lot of people don't know that.
Acc. to June, Judy invited her on the show during an especially low point in her (June's) life, and it's great to see June and Judy having fun here. So what if they had a few glasses of the ol' Blue Nun? June seems fine during the show...
Just because they were having fun, doesn't mean they were drinking. And if they were, maybe June was the one that had a little to much. I know Judy and June were great friends. She was there for June when her husband Dick Powell died. She really helped June get through her grief.
I really wish that NetFlix or Hulu had a broadcast history section and aired various items, like this, any of the old NBC and CBS Playhouse series, any of the half-hour and one-hour presentation specials or series hosted by a celebrity. There was a lot of talent and great scenes lost.
Apparently they all smoked in those days. There was no cancer scare at all back then. I was evern surprised that Judy smoked. But I noticed that when she did smoke on the show she didn't seem to really inhale that much. Cigarettes seemed more like a prop. Perry Como, Frank Sinatra all smoked. Me too.
We know from two eldersisters who were there that Martha was often in Probe and the Eagle in LA and that she LOVED amyl! (Probably why she ended up in such bad physical shape in later years)
In fact, younger persons who comprise the demographic most targeted by advertisers and media aren't watching as much television, don't buy recorded music if they may get it free online, get most of their information online, so rarely read newspapers or magazines. It's a vastly different world than the era when TV variety shows thrived.
Its too bad the brass in Hollywood don't have the guts to put a great live Variety show like Garlands or Carol Burnetts show on the air today..I have a feeling its just what the Country could use in these hard times and a Country sick to death of war..Give the people what they want and they will WATCH!!!
Yes, but these old standards that Judy Garland & Martha Raye sang are so much better than most of the songs only 20 years previous to today. As a mostly rock & roll fan, I may also say most of the rock & roll from 30-50 years ago (including from the punk rock era of 1975-80, but especially of the 1950s and '60s and early '70s) is vastly superior to any popular or rock music of today.
@hirchik Of course, smoking didn't impair their talents, and their skills increased with experience. But the chronic irritation damaged their throats. That's the sad truth. If you don't smoke, don't start! If you do, quit! But in any case, we can still enjoy the work of these old stars, these beautiful humans.
If you're not in the habit of telling other people how to live their lives, don't start. If you feel the need to tell others what they SHOULD do, look within, and until you're unable to find a flaw, shut up.
Mel torme called himself The Velvet fog ( his voice ) Andy proudly listed it on many of his album covers. Judy was somewhat unimpressed and behind his back nicknamed him"The Velvet smog". As he got a little older, he began to increasingly gain lots of weight and I always thought he should be called"The Velvet frog" because his face actually did resemble a frog when he got older. I don't mean this harshly however, he published a nasty book about his experiences on the Judy Garland TV show(6 months after she died) and most of it was not true.😱 (according to everyone who worked on the show : cameras, technicians, sound, producers, directors, guest stars etc.) The details of what caused all of this is in some of the many biographies of Judy Garland.🤔👎
I agree, I am so sick & tired if people who were not even born commenting about things and times they never experienced, imposing today's standards and political correctness upon them. Many more people smoked even a decade ago than today, and certainly back in 1962-63 when this television series aired. A person was not a bad person or deficient in talent simply because he/she enjoyed smoking tobacco, then and still today a perfectly legal substance.
The only problem is we don't have the great talents and great songwriters in the abundance of the era when Judy Garland and Carol Burnett had their series' on television. This is the same problem why TV talk shows are so boring today--no more great authors (and many younger persons could not read them, even were great novels still being written) to have as guests, as well very mediocre singers who are all technique but no soul.
1. Hated seeing Mel Torme hog the stage after that awful book he wrote about Judy. 2. LOVE the Martha Raye segment! They played off each other so beautifully.
6:48 is sooooo freaking funny! OMGosh how I love Judy so. But, I hadn't seen this before and I didn't know she ever sang At Last. Does anyone know if there's a full version? I've looked for it but no results thus far. :-( I'd be so thankful if I could get a reply from someone who knows. Thank you in advance! xo
@waif55 Well technically her not having money isn't her fault, some guy embezzled money from her. And also mgm got her started on the pills which then led to addiction because mgm made her depend on them for all those years she was with the studio. It's very unfortunate :/
Fun Fact: Aside from Judy and Martha sharing a husband, composer David Rose, guess who was in charge of incidental music (but not the theme song) over at NBC's "Bonanza" competing against Judy?
I don't know what you mean by this? It appeared to me Judy Garland and June Allyson were enjoying themselves watching Mel Torme and horsing around a bit. Did I miss something?
Because smoking is unhealthy, but it's not always as bad as the scare tactics they've used to convince people not to smoke. Not everyone who smokes gets cancer, ruins their voice, had a heart attack or emphysema. Honest. You could look it up
@kern39743 Unfortunately almost all performers (singers, actors, etc.,) smoked, and still do. And poor Judy traded one addiction for another throughout her life... Sad.
back then the majority of Hollywood smoked drank and did all kinds of drugs both prescription and non to keep their acts afloat. In Judy's case she was encouraged to do so. the note from some documentaries on her was that she ended up staying at gene Kelly's home and raided his medicine cabinets for things to keep her going or to help her sleep. problem is, he had those things so what do you think he was doing?
On the smoking thing, remember Nat "King" Cole? He was one of many singers who thought he had to smoke, that smoking made a singer's voice sound better. He died because of that idea.
judy is absolutely stunning in this. nobody can ever top her, shes just uncompareable!
Judy's rehearsals are better than most of today's performers when they put on prepared shows.
Notice we dont have such great performers who can pull stuff like this off anymore.. Judy and Martha are awesome
These outtakes are BETTER and 98 per cent of the schlock on the air nowadays!!!
I love the fact that these people were real and lived at one time, and talented, with humor, singing, dancing and acting. i love it; judy, martha, mel, june.
how could anyone not love her the QUEEN of entertainment JUDY !!!!!!!!!!!!
Despite the fact that one of Martha's husbands, composer David Rose, left her for a young Judy Garland, Judy and Martha remained close friends. This clip is priceless and showed how spontaneous and funny Raye was.
oh wow! i never knew that!
Martha and Judy are my favourite duo ❤️
Wow! They almost don't make dames/performers like this anymore! I'm amazed how well Judy's and Martha's vocals blend together. One wouldn't think of them sounding so great together (their comedic timing is impeccable-esp Martha's!)! Thank you so much for posting this fantastic jewel!
I cannot get enough of the memories of these people. They don’t make em like this now.
Sing it, my friend. NOTHING comes close.
i'm a teen and i love everything from back then.
i haven't laughed this hard in a long time!
I grew up on this stuff, the America I use to love.
Judy looks simply amazing
and what big voices they had. i've always got idea's for old hollywood movie stars to still do some movies that i've created in my head; a movie with judy and martha wouldn't that be awesome.
They sound great together. Martha Raye's voice is really pretty.

These are great performances. What a dynamic choice of medley songs for Ms. Garland and Ms. Raye!
what a treat never have seen judy so loose and comfortable..-good for martha raye
It drives me crazy that no one remember Mel Torme anymore. He was great. The Judy Garland Show was really a great show and how she made fun that the network would cut their funding or the show at any moment and Jerry Van Dyke was good as the floor manager guy.
this is so much better than some material that was actually aired
This is why Judy Garland is awesome and Martha Raye too
coolsweetgroovy
Yes..he was the musical director on her shows.
Jacqueline Paul

Mel Torme was a fellow Chicagoan. Always liked him. Besides he wrote the Christmas Song! I still miss him, he was such a pleasant person.
this is great hilarious they always put a smile on my face esp. judy
Martha and Judy are so cute together
Never knew Martha had such a great voice. Only knew her as a comedian.
I adore Martha raye and Judy garland ,in life away from the cameras Judy was also very funny, just to bad ,to to bad ,just lovely
Wow. Mel sounds great and it's fantastic to see the cast enjoying themselves. Thanks for posting this!
Mel is AWESOME
Martha’s voice is gorgeous to listen to

Gawd, what a treat! Thanks for posting this treasure.
The talent years.
Blue Bird,
Thank so much for uploading all of these great, and to say the least classic videos.
Wonderful! Pure entertainment!!
Comedy gold right there with Martha Raye!!!
How wonderful! Martha could have enjoyed a great singing career--she was Anita O'Day's inspiration--but her comic career took her in another direction. Judy of course is peerless, even in rehearsal.
Martha's mugging for the camera is off the chain :D
Martha Raye was hilarious. That made me laugh out loud!
Love Both Of Theses Lady❤️
Mel Torme - miss him so much. What a great guest for Judy.
💜There are million folk And you feel as though Judy is singing to you💜💜💜💜💜💜
Wow, Martha Raye can belt the blues
That was brilliant, I really loved that...
Fantastic stuff...thanks for this!

at 1:52, the look on Judy's face is precious, like the girl from early MGM.
I love anything Judy.
I actually have this medley on my iPod. lol. Glad to see it in video! Thanks for posting! =D
Man, such hard workers! Perfection
Great entertainment from a by-gone era!
So true and sad!
I found it on iTunes.
The Album Name is "Judy Garland and Friends" the song is Glen Miller Medley
Love Mel!
This is really funny
Thank You for posting! Man sill you look, R.E.A.L. talent!
LOVE this!
ugh Mel Torme was so fucking in love with himself
He’d have to be. Who else would fall for a face like that?

Alan DeWitt was a substitute singer for Leonard. I don’t remember why. But I think he did an amazing job singing this great standard.

Mel torme sings and watches Judy great today there s only Katia flavia
it should be on a dvd collection you can buy online through amazon or something like that.
Who's the guy at the beginning? Mel Tormé? Five flats!
Martha stole LadyBird Johnson's hair.
