- Here is a nice gem of a Key located within paddling distance of the Blimp Road Launch on Cudjoe Key. It is around 2.75 miles from the launch and is one of the few islands in the Keys that has a natural beach, pine trees, and areas for rough camping (pirate style). It used to be a processing area for Sponges and other marine products. Also, it became a smuggling port for some. Definitely a nice place to take a leisurely paddle, have lunch, do some snorkeling, and hit the surrounding fishing spots. A true gem.
Was just doing research on the GPS and I saw the island. OF COURSE you already have a whole video about it. Love it! Keep me coming!
Dude. I love your channel. I visit the keys when i get the chance from Minnesota. Your videos give me ideas for when i visit and it is much appreciated.
your content is awesome man makes me really miss Florida Keep it up!!
Thanks Claude. Appreciate it. Will do.
sittin at work watching your videos makes my day
Thank you for this video. I am staying in Cudjoe key in May with a veterans nonprofit Kayak fishing organization
Nice video, I love this kind of fishing, if there is no storms we are going to the keys this Sunday to get some fish!! Keep up the good work
Saturday and Sunday should be pretty nice.
Very cool vid Steve
I just recently stumbled across your videos and subscribed today. I enjoy ur videos, but man I'll say you've got some BALLS! Going out in 300 ft water by yourself.... You have some good techniques I gotta try. I live in Tampa and do a lot of kayak flats fishing. Tight lines!!
Thanks for the compliment. A lot of the standard techniques down here are not used very much in other locations, so I thought making a few videos about them would be helpful. I'm pretty confident in my kayak and myself so don't really sweat it.
Great info thanks for posting!
Thanks for watching HydraYak.
Great video, as always. But bring a net next time lol. Thx for sharing
great video!!!
Appreciate it Steve. Have another adventure video coming out on Tuesday.
Terrific video. How did you mount an outboard to your kayak? I'd like to do the same thing.
Cool little place.
IT's a nice little gem. Not too far away so a nice paddle too.
Those little keys are too cool man
Lots of cool stuff around here if you are willing to check things out. That's what the pirates did I think.
keep it up bro!!!
thanks!
Will do Squirrel.
Man, been binging on your videos over that past few days. Making me miss Southwest FL and the Keys, my old stomping grounds. Def, moving back down there in the future. Love the vids, keep up the awesome work!
Thanks a lot. Yea, lots of people use my videos to bridge the time until they can make it back.
Dude, you're my kayak fishing plug
Glad that you like em. Definitely, a good way to burn some time.
Great video and nice kayak setup Steve. keep up the work. good commentary and explanations. Would love to team up someday. Subscribed.
Thanks. Sure thing. Let me know when you are down.
What is the bigger size you can handle with that set up? I can see the rod is a Shimano Teramar Inshore Series, what size, power and action? What about the reel? I'm coming on April to fish the keys and I need an all around set up. Love your videos!
Fishing the keys is nothing like fishing anywhere else. So much wildlife and places for fish to be.
Hey @keyweskayakFishing
How long was it between barracuda and Snapper
Yea, it is a wonderful place.
love your videos, whats up with the mcso arrest log tab though? just wondering keep up the good work and land one of those backcountry tarpon for us.
ian, I find alot of people, locals, check the music log to see if they know anyone who got popped. since it's a small island you just might see someone you know. pretty comedic anyway...
that's mcso...
Yup, it's a Keys thing. Small island, with a bunch of nutso's, so it is cool to see your friends and neighbors in the line-up. I'm not quite there yet. Spend too much time fishing to get into trouble.
Yup. A small island thing.
I wish I knew of this place when we were in cudjo
good video, thanks, can u show sone more places like that, where u can "stop" in the keys?
Check out my Adventures playlist.
FWIW, A good friend who used to live on Cudjoe Key years ago told me that those canals cut into Tarpon Belly were originally for a shrimp raising operation. Whether he had first hand knowledge, or simply passed along lore, I don't know. Anyway, we beached the CC there for a Saturday afternoon and enjoyed a few cold ones while passing time with the women. Good times.
That makes sense, not that I know anything about shrimp farming.
Thanks Jim. That sounds pretty much on the dot. Those channels are definitely man made. I figured it was for getting boats through there, but then why the walk ways across. Much better reasoning would be for being able to feed and catch the shrimp. I'm sure it was used for quite a few different things as it is one of the few inhabited Keys off the main run of islands.
Well, anyway, that was the history version I was given. Been watching some of your other videos. I'm enjoying them, especially since I haven't been out on my KW in 6 weeks now and it'll be another 2 before the first opportunity. All the best...
Of go out to tampon belly during a really cold cold front those canals will be stacked with mangrove snapper but find the Richards that's all they will hit
kayaked out here from blimp road... monster lutjanus grisies. the visibility was horrible however, and i had no luck.... the tidal coefficient wasn't on our side. there was a very low tide, compared to the video. Even at high tide the tide was much lower.
Yea, the bigger they are the smarter and more wary they are. Live baits are almost a must to catch them. Or shoot them. Chum helps as well.
Are them Islands part of the ten thousand Island chain? thanks bro, dig your fishing.
No. Just part of the Keys system.
Can you overnight park at the launch site?
Can you show around Marathon?
It used to be a shrimp farming reseach facility in 1966
I think it was the in the 70's

you were right!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
dam that's a great spot hey Steve can you drop a small 16 foot boat there were you dropped off at
Yes you can sir! It is a free public and not busy ramp! Plus there is key deer on the road there!!
oh man that's so cool too know thanks a million times .
Yup, what Salt Flies said. One of my favorite ramps down here. I like to head out there when I want to get away from people.
Key West Kayak Fishing dunno if you’ll get this but how is that spot for overnight parking? If one were to hypothetically spend two days “on the water,” would the vehicle be ok?
Nice video - very well narrated and assembled. Just curious where you got the pontoon and what brand? Thanks. Chris
It comes as a package. My kayak is the Hobie Adventure Island.
Steve- would theere be any lobster in those channels through Tarpon Belly Key?
the channels were used as a shrimp farm, so presumably?
1000 barracuda
I was just there, too bad i didn't hear of it :(
Yea, it's definitely a hidden gem much different than all the other keys around here in the Lower.
I'll be visiting my parents in Cudjoe November 14-21. Do you know where to rent a boat and get more info?
Boat or kayak? For boats, pretty much every marina rents boats. If you check the Florida Sportsman forum for the Keys, there have been quite a few posts about rentals. For a kayak, search florida bay kayak rentals. The shop rents all the name brand kayaks.
Kayak, we are in the market to buy. I have seen good deals on Key West Craigslist, but not jumping on anything, til I get there.
why not keep the barra is it bad?
I was just fun fishing. Those small ones are great eating.
oh ok thanks for telling me :)
Why didn't you try to drop that whole pinkish in the deeper channel, those channels always contain some huge fish that like to hide out in that man made structure
I tried a little bit, but actually those areas don't hold a lot as there is not much water flow to flush food through.
Do you ever get stopped by FL Game Warden?
Mostly to chat. A lot of them watch my videos.
1
Nice.
Man of few words, and numbers!
Pilchards
So U Noisily Motored thru another person's Camp? Burning Fossil Fuels along the way . .
He's the quietest guy down here, many boats have stereos blaring and twin 300s on them.
Cool video but some things should be left a secret. There's already way too many people out there already.
Nah, plenty of places to explore and very few people willing to put in the effort.
Miguel Perez Don't watch.
I would probably of shut of my Motor & Paddled thru. More respectful that way
