  • When is it time to tow? An overheated engine that is not working, very little wind, and a swell pushing towards land. One harbour is over 15 miles away. It’s an unknown with a narrow entrance down a river that definitely requires an engine. The harbour we left is 8 miles behind us and we just might be able to reach it before the winds kick up and night falls. Do we break the glass and start towing our friend towards a safe harbour? What to do, what to do…

    Earlier someone posted this comment and, while they ultimately decided to delete their comment, I thought our answer was important enough to share the original comment (minus the person's name) and our answer. -Mo "Why in world would she need a tow? She has sails. I must have missed something. "
    There are all sorts of reasons why a boat with sails might need a tow. We hope this question is answered by watching the video, but l'm happy to elaborate. Her engine was overheating to the point that it was no longer working. The winds were so light that she was only able to sail at just over a knot, then later a bit more. And there was a large, rolling swell that was slowly pushing the boats towards a lee shore.
    The next safe harbour was over 15 miles away, down a narrow river that was not navigable by sail alone. The harbour we left, Gijón, was about 7 miles behind us, but with her reduced speed there was no way she would reach it before nightfall... which was also when strong winds would start.
    There was the added risk of entering Gijón at night without the engine. It's an extremely busy shipping port with massive cargo ships coming and going with regularity.
    Without the tow she would be offshore in the dark, in a gale, singlehanded with a disabled engine
    With all of these factors, we discussed options and ultimately offered to tow her to a safe harbour which she accepted.
    These situations can often look very different from the safety of our chairs, but out there decisions often need to be made with whatever information we have at the moment. We were happy to be there to help as other sailors have often helped us over the years.

    No fun when your boat is having problems...hopefully just the impeller. Each winter I do all the maintenance that I can on my boat and have a mechanic spend an hour looking everything over...well worth the 150/hour (prices in 2024) to check everything out on the engine...plus I always learn something.

    Reminded me of one of the first videos I saw on your channel, many years ago! Very well accomplished.
    This is Wayne and Rebecca P, we sent you a hard drive back in the day. Back when I was watching your videos and thinking we would never be able to join you on the open waters. Today, I watched this video on our New (to us) 2000 Cabo Rico 45. We started living aboard last Tuesday, the boat was in Gulf Shores, AL and we are currently in Panama City, FL beginning our trek around Florida heading North to our home slip in North Myrtle Beach, SC, then after a week or so heading North toward cooler temps. We did it! Thank you for keeping the embers glowing for us.

      Hello Wayne and Rebecca!!! Its so wonderful to hear that you got a Cabo Rico 45 and are just at the beginning of your new cruising life adventures
      ! Congratulations! :) :) :) We're rooking forward to seeing you in the same port someday and having you over for a glass of cheer. In the meantime, we'd love to hear about your voyages if you have anything on social medias or can send us email to drakeparagon@gmail.com. Happy sailing. Here's to the cruising life!

    The armchair sailors will no doubt come out, but attaching a tow in anything but calm water is always harder than it looks.

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  28 дней назад

      Yes, it's always easier to look at something after the fact and say coulda, woulda, shoulda. But out there it always looks a bit different and we try to make the best decisions we can given the circumstances and what we know at the time. And, of course, we always try to learn from our experiences moving forward. Cheers! (✿◠‿◠) -M

    Once on tow, the towed boat should keep steering toward the stern of the towing boat. If she starts to sheer the loads on the tow line increase dramatically. Not getting close to pass a line is a huge problem but if you can't manoever accurately how would you pick up a MOB? Pass close by the stern of the disabled vessel with some way on (3 knt) to throw a line -that way you don't have to worry about masts touching in a swell.

    I've heard someone say that you almost always make the pass on the second time - the line is wet and heavier.

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  28 дней назад +1

      Ah, for us it was the fourth time that was the charm, but that makes sense. Our monkey's fist was just too small and lightweight to have any real throwing power, but the fender worked great. Something to keep in mind in the future. -M

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  29 дней назад

      Mmmmm, the swell was definitely not fun and was making it incredibly difficult to get close enough to throw the tow line. But this is part of the reason we wanted to start the tow when we did since the weather was supposed to deteriorate as night fell. Can't imagine trying to do this in bigger waves! -M

    This shows how important it is to maintain your engine.
    The skipper of the vessel with the engine problem thinks it might be the impeller.
    Impeller kits cost under $50. they are easy to check and replace.
    I am a local sailor staying within 100 miles of my home port.
    In my case I do a full engine check in the beginning of each season.
    If I was cruising far from home I would check fuel filters , water strainer and impeller before every crossing.
    PS In both videos the skipper did not say if she checked if the engine was exhausting cooling water.
    This should be the first thing to check when an engine starts to overheat.

    • @lizzy3332
      @lizzy3332 25 дней назад

      hi, i understand how it might seem like the skipper was inexperienced or negligent towards her engine from the few clips in this video, but there is a longer history behind this issue. on her own RUclips channel, Hazel documents extensively about her engine issues and all the work that she has put into it, including a service by a mechanic in winter, all kinds of repairs, replacements and trouble shooting since the problems occurred in the Scilly isles, and having 3 separate mechanics look over her engine when nothing else was working. if i remember correctly, Gijon was one of the ports in which Hazel had a mechanic look at her engine and the problems were thought to be fixed when she left the harbour, only for the engine to overheat once more.
      initially, like you, hazel suspected there was a leak in the cooling system. hazel checked the fuel supply system thoroughly and then took apart the exhaust system for inspection. she changed various filters and strainers (in some cases multiple times), and the impeller was changed too. if i remember correctly the issue turned out to be that the original impeller had exploded and small slivers had somehow been distributed throughout the cooling system, clogging up the pipes. one of the mechanics Hazel had consulted before this video had removed some of those impeller components and replaced the impeller, but he did not find all of them (there was a language barrier so hazel wasn't sure if the problem had been resolved or not, but it later turned out that it hadn't). that is what Hazel meant when she said that she thought it was the impeller.
      unfortunately, while hazel has experience in fixing problems with her engine underway, there was not enough wind for her to be able to turn on the autopilot and be able to spend the amount of time she would have needed in the engine room (and I'm not sure she had all of the components she needed on board, the episode came out 3 months ago and i cant remember all of the details).
      I hope that the summary helped. again, i completely understand how a few short clips can fail to show the context and history of the problems that were occurring.

      polypro floats, which is very useful sometimes, but it isn't good for a tow line between heavy boats because it fatigues rapidly when it is repeatedly stretched.

      Hazel from sailing vessel Alanouwoly is an extremely capable, knowledgeable, skilled, prepared, and experienced sailor. She's sailed in all kinds of conditions and competently dealt with all kinds situations in her voyaging that has taken her from Germany to Norway, Denmark, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Spain and France, and including sailing across the North Sea and the Bay of Biscay. She's actually got a lot of videos on her channel of her work on her engine, and if you'd like to see then she also explained what actually happened with this overheating in her videos on her channel ruclips.net/user/SailingAlanouwoly.

    • @patrickfitzoot
      @patrickfitzoot 28 дней назад

      Have to agree. Her post mortem video indicates she doesn't(can't?)change her impeller by herself, nor knows to pick all the bits out of the system if it falls apart. This is boat engine 101 stuff.

    • @patrickfitzoot
      @patrickfitzoot 28 дней назад

      @drakeParagon according to her, the impeller fell apart at sea, and rather than replace it she got towed. Even if bits of an impeller are sucked into
      the HX one can still replace it, and use the engine (with somewhat reduced cooling) until in port/at anchor.
