    That is a Masonry bit identifiable by the carbide tips being wider than the shaft for utilizing anchors. As for the Orcas, waterproof firecrackers, M80's, have been successfully employed as a deterrent - think very loud noise for an acoustic sensitive animal. We had plenty onboard for our passage but did not require them. There is a thought that playing loud "unpleasant" music through the hull may help as well but the only boat I know to do this was a Cat with the rudders in front of the Saildrive which is also a deterrent as it makes the risk higher for them. The biggest problem with them is they do not announce their presence until its too late. If you see a pod before they are close to the boat they most likely are not the pod doing the attack. The attacking pods quite literally approach from below and only when they "hit" do you realize you have company. The best advise I would give is have firecrackers with a cooking torch (the wind factor) for lighting them and exfil the area as fast as possible, the less time in contact with them the better your odds at reducing potential damage - even in reverse if you have a blade rudder as that would place the rudder in front of the prop.

      Absolutely. We were so luck that we were in Killybegs and able to go to that marina when we got Covid, instead of being stuck in a very remote anchorage on the west coast of Ireland.

    I tip my hat to you for managing the HydroVane install from the dock, that shaft is beastly heavy. We are on the hard and working off a scaffold I was able to use a hydraulic jack to take the weight. A tip to others who may be planning a similar job: Rigid makes a cutter that will handle the stainless steel tubing with ease. It is a little beefier than the ones for copper but works the same and it is very reasonably priced.

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  7 месяцев назад

      I think installing the Hydrovane would have been much easier if we were on the hard and able to work from a scaffold. And that hydraulic jack would have been fantastic!

    I have also heard about the orcas ripping off sailboat rudders.
    It is my understanding researchers are trying to use noise to keep them away but the research is not complete.
    I think the idea of making a strange noise with your pipes is as good as anything at this time.
    Good luck

    Orcas are intelligent animals. Cruisers who try to hurt only make the general situation worse. They have learned that humans catch their livelihood. Thus, I have stopped buying canned tunas. Your banging methods are excellent. Cats do not like wrinkling with aluminum foils. My theory is that sounds that are not natural will scare orcas away. Cheers.

    Thanks for this. Gave me the confidence to do one myself. I’m curious why you sanded the hull down instead of removing material from the back of the starboard?

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  7 месяцев назад

      Thanks. :) I never thought of removing material from the starboard to get it to conform to the curvature of the hull, but I think that might have been more difficult for me to do than sand down the hull to flat. One thing that I didn't show was that I put Sikaflex 291 sealant in between the starboard and the hull and on the bolts to seal it. Good luck with your installation! 👍🏻

    Up here in the NorthWest, when the native people would fish from small canoes they would carry dried out Orca liver in a powder form, then if the Orca became curious and start to overwhelm them when fishing then they would spread out the dried liver powder and the Orcas would instantly leave the area. Also commercial fisherman would use the same method by using a dead shark to drag behind their boats to prevent the sharks from getting caught in their nets. People have talked about mixing the liver powder with vegetable oil so to allow the powder to stay at the surface much like when a little bit of diesel fuel hits water and spreads out. Not sure if the vegetable oil theory has worked.

    waterproof bangers are recommended, as orcas dont like the shockwaves. these are sold on various places but mostly common in gibraltar. Sailing Zatara has a slightly different bigger types, and others use a smaller version.
    these bangers are scientifically proven to be useful as marine researchers use these frequently around orca, whales, shark infested waters.
    An engine under go causes vibrations. depending on the ultrasonic sound variation, such sound can either attract or distract orcas.
    Orcas use the same prinicple of communication such as whales and dolphins.

    It’s best not to hit a long, tight bolt/ rod with a metal hammer as it will easily bend it and damage the threads. They recommend not using the PVC pipe now, just the original tube.

      So far it's been steering great. I'm not crazy about how much the whole thing vibrates when the rudder's in the water and the boat's under power, so I think I might add a custom brace on the top to hold it more steady. I'm looking forward to when we've sailed with it enough to make a good usage demo and review video. Hopefully soon!
