How To Remove A Ford Model A Firewall - Sweet Heart Roadster - Ep. 38
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 дек 2019
- Now that the side of the cowl are done, Matt turns his attention to the firewall. With the 331 Cadillac engine with the huge Scot blower on top, there are a few space issues. Matt works on removing the old original firewall, which is held in place by rivets, spot welds and screws along the top. The engine and trans also need to be removed for the time being to help give us some working spaced. Once the engine is out, the last few hidden fasteners can be removed the firewall can be slid out. Matt's plan all along has been to install the 1932 firewall he pulled from the 32 BB we pulled from the junkyard back at the beginning of summer. In the next episode Matt is going to work on fitting the firewall and figuring out exactly how it wants it to look. Comment down below with your thoughts on the 1932 firewall in the Sweetheart Roadster!!

One thing about which there is no debate: your dog is adorable.
He’s the best!
Using a rivet gun is such a great Idea. I just did my firewall screws with an impact driver... wasn't nearly as easy as what I saw just saw you do!
Great Video !!
Another great video 👍👍
Thanks for watching!
moon's winter jacket looks like a horse blanket. and i gotta say that's a mighty impressive tool... pretty helpful even if you don't have a model a firewall extraction job, et al. pretty fascinating swap. "thank you kind stranger!" hahahaa!
Haha it basically is a horse blanket lol. He loves to play outside in the cold for an hour or so at the time so I started putting a jacket or blanket on him to keep him safe!
Wow, Matt finally wearing work gloves.
Now ya need some welding gloves when tig welding.
TIG gives off light amounts of ultraviolet that can cause skin cancer over time.
My first profession was as an Ironworker welder and the dude who taught me to weld and was the foreman and our union rep was ass bustin' adamant about gloves when welding.
I love this project, definitely gonna be cool cruisin' weekend nights in it once it's finished.
That frame looks like a deuce, that firewall looks like a deuce, no gas filler on top of the cowl.......It has to be a deuce! haha Great job Matt! I didn't know they were so close to be near interchangeable. That firewall and gas filler, as you know, were the fastest way to tell a 30 31 from a deuce. Way to go!!
I almost forgot. Are you going to leave the chrome trim off the cowl? I left mine off of my AV8 roadster. I never did like the chrome trim so much on an A.
hi from Danville pa
Hey Neighbor!
Thanks for sharing 👍
I look forward to these..each one of them..
Where do get that screwdriver tool that’s badass
Funny you posted this yesterday. I just fit the flatty in my coupe and need more room. Thinking of going the reversed firewall of make an recess but want it to look factory like. Luckily someone did some crappy spot welds on it so it came right out of my jalopy.
Thanks for watching!
Looking great. Thank you for sharing your progress.
Good videos. Thanks
I am 80 years old and never seen a center punch with a spring . Yep Hoya Hoya Gramps on the couch .
Like Winfield says "Everyday is a school day!"
Nice when you know what to look for and what tools you need to get firewall out.
Thanks for watching!
I like the nice reference to the bardahl sign, I noticed it hanging in the corner in beginning of video.
It was a pain to hang but looks right at home there!
@@IronTrapGarage yep seems to be right at home there.
Nothing worthwhile is ever easy. Keep up the good work. Glad you got help to get stuff done. Sometimes you just need an extra pair of hands to move stuff.
That's so very true! But the journey is half the fun!
Those tips on removing screws, and finding spot welds, are some of the best tips I've seen in years. Never seen a center punch like that. Looks like it works pretty well.
Thanks so much! Glad the videos are helpful!

Killer idea!
Pretty slick, didn’t know the firewalls were that close in shape. Gonna look nice
Matt & co. another great "how to" video, that was a good plug, on over haulin... this is what I really like about your videos, you film most all of the procedure, your not trying to make everything fit in a time frame, really looking forward to seeing this rod completed, as I mentioned in a previous comment, I'm really thinking about doing a rod the Iron Trap garage way....Build on dudes!!!
Thanks man we're trying to push only stuff we actually use and abuse! We're glad everyone enjoys the videos!
Matt, I'm finding myself going through your older videos, because I'm doing the same thing on our 30 A Coupe...is the 32 Pickup Firewall the same as the BB Truck?
I'm glad you didn't flip the fire wall Matt I forgot you had the 32 truck great Call
Very useful tips I am getting ready to move on with My 28-29 project , I loved the Drive in the 39 Ford short as it was
Good luck on the 28-29!
That's a sweet little center punch! Never seen one of those, and I've been around for a long time!
I found it in an old welding table I bought. Gotta be older than me!

Mannn i was hoping to get myself one of those! Is funky looking!!

I'm here to learn for my own future Model A build. It seemed like you had ok clearance at the back of the Cadillac. What's the purpose of going to the '32 firewall?
Hello again Matt. I made the suggestion (and apparently so did many others) of flipping the firewall. That would have been a pain in the ass to weld up the factory holes and then drill out new ones on the opposite side anyway, but now I see you had a much better idea with the 32 firewall! Have you ever thought about buying a shorty school bus with more room than the meat truck for going to shows ect?
Hey Greg, I've been keeping my eyes open for a bigger enclosed truck we could use for road trips and swap meets, just need to wait for the right deal and vehicle to come along!
Great tool for flat head screws Bill
Great info you are providing in your video's. Looking forward to seeing the install of the 32 firewall. As always, a great job Matt and good to see Mike as well.
Thanks for watching! Mike is usually busy editing the videos and doing the digital side of things while I play in the shop haha. We keep busy!
You make good learning videos for first timers
Thanks for watching!
Interesting. 32 firewall in 30/31. 👍
Almost like Henry did it that way!
IronTrap Garage
Not very much 32 parts fit the A.
What a cool surprise to see your faithful assistant Mike make an appearance. Not that your other helpers weren't nice people I'm sure. Nice to see a creative fit video again!
Love the shops stone walls and all the wall art. Keep the videos coming.
Thanks for watching!
Hay Matt,
Love the way you keep your projects moving.
From an armchair fan, just keep doing what you're doing.
Best wishes from good old England.
Thanks for watching!
Matt For trying to get the 32 fire wall to see if it fits after cutting off the feet etc try bring it in room the rear to see what is in the way as tile fit
Excellent video!!
I suggested the fire wall flip also but your silence in replying to all those suggestions gave me the Impression that was not going to happen. Now I like you 32 firewall install being that we get to see more complicated fab work. Great job. Rock on Garth.
Thanks roger I’m trying to do some small subtle mods on this car. I think it’ll be neat when done!
All ways love these videos 🙂 my dad's shop was kinda like yours . Brings me alot of great memory's
Thank you so much for watching! Your dad had to be a cool guy!
He was very cool but he died 20 years ago
Firewall's gonna look GREAT! Also great to see your welds from the backside.
Thanks for watching.
Was that a spring loaded punch you were using? I've never seen that before!
Nice job on taking the firewall out Matt, going to be cool with the 32 firewall in there. Good idea to cut the lip off and use the one on the 32.
Thanks robbie!
Very cool video. I’ve never actually seen the firewall removal process before so that was a new learning experience and your tips and tools used very helpful.
Thanks for watching Bob!
Another video with great content ! You have some interesting tools, particularly that center punch.
Thanks it’s a cool vintage one I found in the workbench I bought with the rotex punch I bought. Has slowly become my go to center punch!
Lots to look forward to. Nice neat removal of the fire wall.
Thanks for watching Dale!
With the new firewall you should install a 572 Cad.Engine
Nahhhh. Old school is best for this build.
@@IronTrapGarage o.k. still a lot of Ford flat V8s out there would you consider this for an option?
Wow nice job getting it out, I didn't realize that the side braces had to come out with the firewall . Can't wait to learn how you install the new one.
Thanks for watching!
Glad you're a 1 percenter and not doing what everyone else would do. Otherwise we would not be learning, right. Can't wait to see your apprentice Andrew and his side kick on '16 with their own production
Thanks Frank! We're just kicking it into high gear now that winter is here!!
I love your videos and all your cars could you please get another project to work on once you get these other ones squared away
We have plenttttyyyy of projects lined up don't worry! Haha
Glad you're doing a firewall change young guys know nothing of the old ways. Like the poor man center punch you have.
Great tip on the screw buster tool, hadn't seen it before. Looks like things go smoothly when you and Mike are working together. 32 firewall is going to look great!
Thanks for watching
Always fire here! 🔥
Thanks for watching!
1:27 Modifications, I love it ! That's what hot rodding is all about.
2:15 You know your going to have to some internals to make that blower work on that engine. Is that a Caddy engine ?
5:23 Countersunk screws are a bitch to get out to begin with at times even when they aren't rusted in.
PS Changed my name (aka Richard Ferrara) Lol.
Yes engine will be all built up for the blower.
First time getting the first view! Funny to see I was among those suggesting flipping the firewall, but you definitely know the best options for what you need. Great vid!
Thanks Jim! I just like to think outside the box a little!
Hi Matt and Mike good video i will be staying tuned to see all these fab Motors come together 👍🇬🇧
Thanks for watching Chris!
Glad to see you back on this one. Ordered one of those screw buster kits on sale.
Awesome glad it was helpful!!
Just a though by the time you read this you've probably already cut up that 32 firewall but with the amount of cutting you will probably have to do to it with your talent you could probably make one just as quick.
Very difficult for me to make a 32 firewall from scratch. There’s loads of 32 firewalls out there cut up. It’s just hot rodding.
nice work
Your kin and my kin must have been related when they were Gallaghers and lived in Ireland. :)
What is the tool used to separate the two pieces of metal? It is bent and hammered on. has a blue handle.
Interesting episode of the screw removal and drilling the spot welds. Also looks like you could have another tools that don't suck review. Took me a little while to find the right key words for a browser search for the hammerless center punch. Its called
Spring Tools 28R45-1 Hammerless Single Ended High Speed Steel Center Punch. Spring Tools is in Spokane WA.
Thanks for sharing! I got mine in an older welding table I bought
couldn't the old fire-wall be turned around and inserted backwards for more engine clearance? (since the stock gas tank is removed)
Habla mucho
Cool
can't help but think about the guy that originally riveted and spot-welded that firewall on there and what he would have thought if he knew his work would have lasted almost a century.
BTW, i have to admit i was more than a little surprised that those slot-head screws hadn't been pb-blasted before removal. apparently, it worked out for the best though. :)
might oughta cover those intakes.. or is that just a mock engine? Anyway, I look forward to your videos every week. Well done!
Mock engine. Carbs are cores that need to be rebuilt. Blower is all taped up. Not my first rodeo.
@@IronTrapGarage I realize that. (rodeo) Just having a conversation. Being an aircraft mechanic, debris issues always get my attention.
Yeah, that’s going to look better than flipping the old firewall. Either way, it’s a lot of work.👍
Thanks for watching!
I can't wait to see that hot rod ripping .....and I can't wait to hear that engine all tuned in OMG loll...... Dude matt if I had money I would have you build me the Philly roadster .....hahaha.....i love tools to and I never seen that tool for the air gun that shit is dope af.....your a legend... Lol
Thanks for watching!
Love the center punch where did you find it or did you make it
It’s just an old vintage one that came in a work bench I bought haha. Should be able to find one still I’d think
The spot welds must have been done by Ford on a Monday or a Friday lol !
Great video Matt, It is really tedious work drilling out the spot welds and rivets. Looking forward to more content on the Sweetheart Roadster. What project is the other Roadster Body in the background for.
Thanks Gerry! It’s a body I’ve been doing rust repair on for a guy. Need to get it finished to make room!
that's what I was thinking , get the motor out.
Привет из России. Молодцы мужики! СССР машины реанимируете?
You want engine clearance on an A model...Turn the A model firewall around and put it back in...
It's also the way to be boring and do it like everybody else does. This isn't "every other build". I respect that being the easy way out but I don't like the look.
Good use of the firewall, though I would have loved to have the truck (but it was toast), are you going to trim 1/2" off the cowl or are you cutting more off? Looks like you get good clearance as is.
I’ll be figuring out how much to cut as I fit it up
My best friends dad owned a shop in Copenhagen denmark called "The Motor Shop". Startet in 1910. Unfortuantely closed now.
Your shop reminds me of that place. Many good hours and memory of that place. Many old cars and parts.
Keep up the good work and videos.

It’s a model a roadster I’m fixing some rust on for someone

If you heat them first - cherry, let them cool, hit with a little penetrant, then use that sweet little tool and you won't break many....
can hear the nicad battery progressively losing power as you drill out the welds. 8:53 - i was one of the "flip the firewall" crowd.
Haha yea it was half dead when I started lol
I got the Horn im still trying to figure out what it came from?
Your guess is as good as mine!
@@IronTrapGarage it looks like a Harley style but that bracket has me stumped! Its not Indian either.. but its cool
Any way you can throw a link about that spring center punch you have there?
It’s a vintage one I found in a workbench I bought haha

turn the original firewall 180 degrees... will it work?
Not the look I'm going for.
Looks like a real pain in the ass to me.
Nothing is easy with this hobby!
I'm new to your channel. Are all the cars in your shop yours? Are they customer cars?
All but the roadster on the table I’m fixing for a guy and the model t coupe that is my apprentices car
