Hotrod Dave here, when we built the windshield frame on my 31 ford,we cut off the stock posts and fabled a v,d sheet metal frame, cut out the panels for the glass.Next we sent the cutouts to the glass guy.we marked the templates for which side, the glass guy didn,t.One side needed a little grinding. It turned out great, looks like it,s doing 200 mph sitting in the driveway. It,s about 8 inches tall.2inches taller would make my seating situation easier.
The Duvall provides that true classic look that makes the car look like it's going fast... even while it's standing still! In my opinion, the posts just look like a clunky add on that takes away from the pure streamline nature of the Hotrod designs of the time when aviation enthusiast returning from the war were starting to apply lessons learned in aero dynamics to make their cars lighter, leaner and faster! This is only my opinion, yours may be different and will respect yours whatever it is.... follow your dreams and passions for pure joy!
I enjoy watching all the cars you work on , especially the variation on the builds and not the same styles over and over . Always loved Duvall windshields 👊🏻
Some times it takes more work for a subtle change, than for a radical modification. Nice work, Matt, and good that you have a vision of what you want. 👍 Tony B
Hi Matt, I really enjoy watching each piece that you manufacture, modify and place in the car, it looks very good as it is going and how it evolves to become a beautiful hot rod, very good the image in the 11:40 minute showing that Matt I'm not bald yet, to my envy that with 47 years I have little left to comb pe, I hope my sense of humor is understood in the translation and as always I send you a big hug from Buenos Aires Argentina.
coming along nicely guys Jeremy Downunder. Oh Matt my son Jed saw the video of you guys eating the vegemite, Anzac biscuits, Yoyo biscuits and TimTams I sent you I told him that's Daddy's box there on youTube he jumped up and down with joy said "Wow yay Daddy your famous" haha love him.
How about a one off custom dash built to the shape the cowl is now? Also, I hope you are considering a home styled Duvall. Great work! Hey Mike, it's ok. Professionals do the same thing. Ask me how I know!
Watching you TIG weld I was reminded about the OLD and I Mean OLD carbon arc welders. I wonder if any of you guys have ever had the opportunity to try using one of those. They work very similar to a TIG (without the shield gas)
Either of the builds work for me , they both have a place in the hobby and both will be a blast to drive ! The 39 would be my daily driver and the roadster the weekend cruiser .
Pretty cool job of it so far , I like those Duval windshields too and some of the old rods used early boat windshields as well and some of those can and do look really good, enough babbling from me , cheers from down under Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺 😎👍👍
As much as I love the Duvall style my vote is for using a later model window frame and doing a proper job of blending it in. that would look real neat!
He lost the video footage?!? Well I'm shocked and mildly outraged. I thought I made a mistake once, but I was wrong. Yeah, right. I think I like the '39 style build, kind of quick and dirty, get it on the road, but I really appreciate the work that goes into the smoother, more finished rod. Always enjoy your videos. Thanks.
Hey Matt, big fan, looking forward to seeing what you do for your Wind Shield. Really enjoyed listening to you on the radio, (ia RUclips). I've always puzzled over the 'Christmas Tree' logo, now I know. Best wishes from Reading, (England).
Just like my mom always told me I can get glad in the same pair of pants that I got maid in an go on with my day. Now that was said I really love your idea on the windshield.
Well all right, all right, all right Matt. :) Lot of work to get it to where you want it but worth it in the end. For sure DUVALL, like you said on the other, they always look like they are never finished.. Look forward to seeing just what you do. Did that flame up on you because that was CAST METAL that you were welding to on the cowl? Just curious..
Not a fan of the Duval windshield. In my opinion looks cheep and aftermarket. Maybe because it’s chrome?. Much prefer the modified style and painted. I think you’re doing a good job on the 39.
guys like me without a press brake-make that U-channel out of scrap piece of square or rectangular tubing-cut one side off, gives a nice channel-still want a press brake though!!
not a Duvall windshield fan,but prefer it to the later Ford style-Duvall does fit the period and era of the car-but most importantly-ITS NOT MY CAR-{I might giggle and point though if you put Woodlite headlights on-LOL]
Cope the doors to blend the dash ... and no fixed post windshield treatments. The first 2 shown look like sh*t .. makes it appear as if someone chopped the top off a coupe. Bleh' !!! You could make up a nice Hallock or Duvall piece I'm sure .. or swap/purchase one of the castings. I like the Wanlass windshields but my opinion is too much playback. If you could blend your own vision of a Wanlass Hallock Duvall inspired windscreen treatment .. it would fit the show rod, Hollywood playboy style build of a period correct, high end "what if" build. Type in your search of either Duvall or Hallock windshield .. with Kustomrama. Tons of black & white photos of roadsters wearing either. Love this build !! Love all your builds .. but am leaning heavy on all show build roadsters. Buzz DeChamp's '31 roadster, Tommy the Greek's '36 Phaeton, Tony La Masa/Ricky Nelson roadster, Eddy Dye's roadster, Mac Schutt roadster .. hell even Barney Navarro's roadster. Vision is everything. Make it happen !! Some of those listed are Duvall, while others are traditional or no windshield. Check out Sylvester McCabe's '29 roadster, & Jackie Howerton's '32 roadster .. both have Duke Hallock windshields. Basically inspired by the Auburn Speedster's windshield of lore. Have fun Matt !!! As if you don't already. We know you do !! Can't wait to see what's next !
Jesse James welded up a really good looking Duvall style windshield frame for a roadster but unfortunately, I don't think he did a video of building it. ruclips.net/video/8zlL7C5KpBk/видео.html I,m trying to build a windshield for my 31 A Roadster which started out as a 5 window Coupe. I'm having trouble finding a source of window channel etc. to get started from scratch. Love your channel. Mike in Northern MI
One suggestion for your straps. Cut off the excess 39.4 miles that you never use for anything other than pulling your idiot brother-in law out of a snowbank.
Genuine genius. Great work IRON TRAP is the best choice for the automotive enthusiasts ...
Your. Work puts LEONARD DA VINCA to shame!

100% agree with you Bill!
Matt, watching you do creative metal work is my favorite thing on your videos.
I enjoy watching all the cars you work on , especially the variation on the builds and not the same styles over and over .
Always loved Duvall windshields 👊🏻
Really great work.
I like the two separate projects and final finish concepts.
I like both styles of building.
One style is for showing off and the other is for having fun not having to care about every little bump or scratch.
Some times it takes more work for a subtle change, than for a radical modification. Nice work, Matt, and good that you have a vision of what you want. 👍 Tony B
good point.

Nice job. It's those extra changes that you make , that gives it what you envision. Can't wait to see it when your done .

Good to see the creative process in progress, million ways to do something, but only one way to make it your own
Yes! The second Duvall for sure! Bad ass Matt
this shows how long it take to build one piece. hope people now understand the time it takes. nice build thanks

Im sure what ever you decide will look Cool, and MIKE dont sweat the small stuff.thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!!
Duvall windscreen looks great

I’ve never been this early!! Fantastic project. Looking forward to the windshield mock up.
Mike what are we to do with you losing that footage. I forgive you. Lol. Love your vids. Thanks for everything.
You guys are real close to me I'm near the cabelas store !
Hey, I like what your doing on the 39 Ford...John D.
Project is coming along great and the Duvall windshield always looks great on a hot rod. Cheers
AWESOME! I LOVE COMING HOME TO MY FRIDAY VIDEO!!! THANKS MATT!!!!!
U got some good taste in music!
Matt I recall it to be the Harry Westergard 32 Ford Roadster. Nice tunes also on this video.
Good morning from New Mexico. Keep up the great work guys!
Seems the original hot roders really only had gas brazing, stick welders and skills.
The stuff some of those grey breads did was truly pretty amazing.
split windshield from an old Chriss Craft speed boat maybe ?
shes coming together guys, Nice !
How about finding a split windshield cab and frame from a '30s pickup and cutting it down to size? Maybe keep the "crank out" for ventilation.
How about Two half moons for the windscreen?
Great job and Another great video guys 👍👍👍
Great work as always
Loving the look that i think ur going with... you and me share the exact same taste 👍
Thanks David!
Nice work Matt.
Good work guys 👍 I like it
Leave that 1" tube under the dash. Or move it too mount the dash. It will stiffen the whole structure inc the door hinges.
I’d love to see you build your own V windshield. Kind of DuVall style but not. Maybe a little more upright like on a 30s boat like a Garwood
I sectioned the cowl /windshield piece.
Matt where's your ear protection using the screw press ? Lol.
Something similar to a DuVall frame would look cool. Polished brass?
Off this subject---any luck on finding a '39/40 Merc chassis yet?????????
Awesome project, nice work.
Mike Espo .
Matt, I'd consider leaving that strip at the top of the cowl and fill in with a strip of new metal to give a little more strength to the cowl area.
Havent you heard of angle iron?
The brace is die cast and is near impossible to weld. It is cast then plated.
Looks great 👍 Matt
Would any of the car bodies that we see in the background be for sale
Not currently no.
Well all right, all right, all right Matt. :) Lot of work to get it to where you want it but worth it in the end. great work go matt its looking good
Thank you.
If the legs on the channel are slightly lower than the width you should be able to do a full 90 on the second leg.
Not a fan of the Duval windshield. In my opinion looks cheep and aftermarket. Maybe because it’s chrome?. Much prefer the modified style and painted. I think you’re doing a good job on the 39.
Great video 👍 I'm such a fan
Again a nother cool video 🙂
Matt Go with the 2nd Duvall style not so much rake.
I know I’m telling my age, small welding tip 1960 clothes hanger. I’m just saying, I kept it on the road so u could fix it later. Say thank you Danny.
So, is this why it’s called a U-tube channel?
Who don’t like Free? 😁
Enjoyed
guys like me without a press brake-make that U-channel out of scrap piece of square or rectangular tubing-cut one side off, gives a nice channel-still want a press brake though!!
Why not run it without a windscreen. That’d still be period but different to most others. Just a thought
I didn't know Robert Duvall was into trad rods
LIKE ALWAYS COOL VIDEOS !
not a Duvall windshield fan,but prefer it to the later Ford style-Duvall does fit the period and era of the car-but most importantly-ITS NOT MY CAR-{I might giggle and point though if you put Woodlite headlights on-LOL]
That won’t happen don’t worry lol
Just ain't the same when you describe with your fingers what was done .
🙌🙌
👍👍
Not a fan of Duval. But it's your rod. I just hope you have a frame or just copy it. Repros are God awful expensive.
Wait just a cotton pickin minute ......isnt there more work to be done on the firewall ?
😆
Looking Good Matt !
Henry Ford could not tell the difference
Condratulacione Yakob Salta Argentina me piace grazie
Sickk
Someone suggested a Chris Craft windshield. Here's one on Ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/303495933124?ul_noapp=true
Looks like a lot of work for not gaining much

Are you getting a bald spot old man Murray?
I hate devol windshields

music sucks,,,,,,,,,,,shop sounds are the best
