our existing water heater started leaking. replaced with a Rheem 50 gallon hybrid. vented cold air out, may make solar air heater for duct in. Local power PUD gave us a rebate check for $900. Glad we did it!
I need to look into that kind of water heater. I’d need to find a way to divert the cold exhaust away for part of the year though because my hot water closet is right in the middle of the house. Thanks for sharing!
Hey Rusty, I am running on a 12 year old Rheem gas model (50 gallon) nat gas, great products. What a cool thing to use the heat pump to add some extra cooling. The vent looks good, thanks for up loading!
Thanks for the informative video Lloyd. We currently are using a very old electric water heater and I've been thinking about upgrading to something more efficient, and this Rheem looks like a good choice. You'll have to keep us updated as to the cost savings.
It saved us a lot. My calculation for 2 people, hot shower every morning and evening, about $150 per year compared to $400 gas. Unit was installed 2YE ago. Our lowest temperature in a garage was about 50 deg winter time. It is an amazing unit with 2 electric elements. Make sure to use Energy Saver, this way, the onboard algorithm will choose the cheapest way to save on electricity. Rheem also started to make full, bigger stand alone Heat Pump water heaters working off the standard dedicated outlet too, but I would use it only as a supplement tank to tankless WH.
What I see is something like a wood stove that pulls in air thru all the leaks in the house thus pulling in outside hot or cold air. I would think that venting air from the outside to the heater would be the way to go and venting the cold air outside in the cool weather.
Fantastic setup! I was hoping to get one as well, but it may not fit in my small water closet. I don't know if the dimensions rheem gives are only the body, or if they also count the pipe connections extending out from the body. How wide is just your tank without counting the pipes?
The vent hose is an 8 inch vent housing sticks out 2 inches. I used a flexible hose for ease of installation but you might could use metal duct for tight quarters. The water heater is a real winner for me and in the 2 months I've had it I can see the savings. Good luck
It will pay for itself in 3 years in electricity savings . My old water heater operated at $520 a year and the new one will will operate for $109 a year. I will be watching it to see if it's as good as the manufactures says. Thanks Jim
hello. You replace the water heater. New water heater is good. :) Hybrid water heater! Electricity is used not to boil water or keep it warm, but to move the refrigerant that stores heat, so you can save a lot on your electricity bill! Thank you my friend.
Water heaters with an ignition source (aka gas or lowest element) needs to be 18" off the garage floor. Technically, you need the stand. Sharbites....meh...it's in a garage so if they ever leak no biggie. These are especially great in the south since they'll grab more heat and then cool off the garage a little bit.
This is awesome, thanks for this! Can you share the part numbers for the duct work you used to vent the cold air (adapter, duct, tape, vent)? Did you get them form Home Depot/Lowes? Keep making these videso Rusty, you got yourself a new subscriber!
Did you have to install an intake similar to what you did for the outlet to bring air to the unit from the garage or outside? As it didn't appear that the room you installed it in had 700 cubic fit of air space. Could you elaborate on the noise it makes, do you experience the noise in the house? I have a utility room that is insulated from the house but has 1 interior door to access the room that will allow some noise to come through. It has an heat pump air handler, washer and dryer and water heater in it. There has been alot of noise about how noisy these units are. What is your thoughts on this matter?
My installation didn't require a vent for inlet air but those can be purchased from several home stores. The noise level isn't noticeable in my house and not an issue for me. But for an interior closet it might be to your advantage to run the exhaust and intake to the outside or garage.
Hey Rusty, are you able to get a temperature reading on the cold air coming out of the water heater? I am looking at installing one in my south florida home but pipe the cold air into the room behind my garage which is always warm.
Great Install but I noticed the install instructions state there needs to be enough ventilation in that closet to allow air from the garage to get into the closet where you either need to have a intake vent going to the garage or louvered doorway in the closet to allow enough air into the closet. What did you end up doing for that? I am thinking of doing similar to your setup but I didnt see what you did to make sure there was enough ventilation in this closet area. Also is this closet considered "inside" your house or is it a closet in the garage?
The gap between the floor and door equals 108 sq.in. I was counting on that being enough for a fresh air intake. (72"x 1.5"} The closet is in the garage.
@@RustyGlovebox - thanks for the reply. That makes much more sense. It kind of looked like this closet was on the inside of the house, so I was curious how you set that up if that was the case. I appreciate it!
Hi, I have a brand new 80 gallon Rheem hybrid water heater, but I am not getting the results as others are. Despite energy, saving mode, heat pump mode or high demand mode, my app is reading between 40-60 kW per day!! It is just my wife and I and we each take one shower a day and I never use hot water for laundry. My electrician, plumber installer don’t know what to make of it and Reem has suggested possible replacement. Any suggestions?? Thank you. Mike.
This is an electric water heater with a heat pump on top. It vents cold refrigerated air out the hose. Thanks

@@RustyGlovebox I was just asking in general is it ok to keep direct vent FVIR rated gas water heater on garage floor? Or is better to keep on metal water heater stand?

Clean install BUT according to the install manual you need a space at least 700ft3 to run properly if your hot air intake is not ducted and/or having a louvered door which is not the case here. Also, the heat pump is only 4200btus so don’t expect to cool your garage with that.
@@RustyGlovebox sure. I'm in the HVAC industry and have heard a lot of people hoping to cool their garage with those HP w/h but that's not going to happen. What you can do however is to duct the air inside the house in a small room or a hallway if you want but you'll need more intake air for your heat pump to work right regardless.
Like all heat pumps, the surrounding climate will affect overall efficiency. Get too far north and it would never pay for itself. How far is the worthwhile line? Hard to say. Would like to see what the actual costs are of your old tank vs the new tank.
"Get too far north and it would never pay for itself" - depends on where you locate it. If outside in an unconditioned garage, then yes that could be the case. But if it's in a basement, that will probably be fine.
