Fantastic review (thanks a lot)!!! I'm about to replace my old water heater and your review has helped A LOT!!! Just a minor point - it is not using 498 kW per hour (that would be way too much) - it is TOTAL 498 kW hours in the period of several months you listed!!!
I installed mine a year ago and the whole thing with tools and parts was about $1,900. I filled out the 5695 form and got $600 back on my taxes. $1,300 for this water heater with everything is great especially since I have a family of 6.
I switched to a propane fired on demand water heater when I replaced my heating boiler. To do that I went with a high efficiency combi-boiler. We turn the heat for the house off in the summer so we only use propane for heating water for six months each year. That allows me to get a good feeling for how much it costs to heat water. We spend about twice what you do to heat water because propane is pricey ($3.20/gal), but at $0.28 per kilowatt-hour running a heater like yours would cost even more. You are lucky to have such low electric rates.
The cost is much more affordable here for sure. We have some friends that live in Boston and they said the same thing . Between their natural gas and electric they were spending around $750 dollars this past December. Thanks Todd and have a great week
Thanks Noel, I have been amazed with its savings. I will be keeping a spreadsheet on it to compare its performance for the next 6 months. We will see how well it does then. .
For payback, you need to deduct cost of alternatives, maybe $800 for nice install of a new conventional tank. So probably only two years to payback. The scheduling feature of the app will help folks with net metering or time-of-use plans. PG&E peak period rates can be over $.50/kWh. Some people's payback will be under a year.
@@RustyGlovebox I've had mine a week & frankly shocked how low-demand it is. I'm off-grid and every kWh is free in money terms, but precious in terms of time and time-of-day. My schedule is set to *hot* at midday, and to coast overnight.
I have a 4400 sq. ft. house. We have three water heaters that are over 10 years old. Just ordered 3 new Rheem Hybrid water heaters. I'm very excited to get them installed. Have you had any issues? I notice you are venting your unit. Is this because the heater makes the room cold? I also notice you put in an expansion tank. I have a well setup so don't need an expansion tank. Thanks for a great review.
I have not had any issues and happy with the performance of the water heater. Expansion tanks are not necessary for the system and only used if you have a check valve in your water supply line or if code requires it. Be sure to use the app , it is simple to navigate through. Good luck
@@RustyGlovebox Thanks. I am a geek with this stuff so I will definitely, embrace the app. I am looking forward to installing these units. It's nice that there is a backup heating element for emergencies. I had a GE hybrid unit in my old house and was happy with it. I did have an issue but GE came right out and serviced the unit. My only concern is one unit will be installed in my mom's bedroom closet. I'm worried about noise and that the unit will make the room cold. I'll probably vent the unit to the outside and perhaps put a timer on the unit so it only makes hot water during the day. But I'm taking two 50 gallon units and an 80 gallon unit off line so I could potentially save 150.00 a month.
Have you noticed it helps keep the garage cooler too? Im in S. Florida and I do a lot of tinkering in there would love to make it a little more comfortable without adding a mini split. The 80gallon is $1100 more than the 65 gallon not sure I can justify the 80 gallon. If it was 500 more or so then I would do it but 1100 bucks is a big jump for an extra 15 gallons.
It does blow cool air and helps a little to cool the garage in the summer but is not a game changer for the different seasons. I would suggest the 65 gallon if you don't need the extra size. It is an efficient water heater but going to big would eat up any savings you would gain. Good luck on your choice
I just installed a Rheem Performance Platinum hybrid 40 gallon two months ago, and we haven't run out of hot water yet with a family of 4. I'm running in ecomode (Energy saving mode), which is the most efficient mode that uses only the heat pump on top. If I do experience issues where the heater is not keeping up with our needs, we can switch the mode to include using the heating elements during those times. But again, we havent had an issue and are saving at least $35 / month from our last traditional electric water heater. We live in South Fl, and I am so surprised how cool our garage is that I'm purchasing the same system that was used in this video to transfer the cool air to our Dining room / Kitchen area using the Rheem outlet (SP17829), 8" flexible duct and exhaust vent.
thanks for the info im going to go for the 65 sounds like the 80 is overkill. I could be wrong but I dont think you are supposed to vent the unit from a garage to a living area you would also be pumping any potential fumes, dust etc. from the garage to the house. @@danbono2
Hello. Long-term use review of WiFi compatible water heater! Your detailed review is good. A water heater that saves money. A spreadsheet with six months of data is helpful. :) Smartphone apps are very convenient. A triple layer hose is effective. Thank you my friend.
Jay the Florida pool pump motor repair guy. When Service Calls Longwood approved ! that was good info 2 see & know👨🔧RG😀 I have a NYLE special products NYLETHERM-1 for years. !
Hi Lloyd, That is a reasonable pay back period for your installation. My home uses bulk propane to heat the domestic water and central (radiator) heating. Propane prices are getting pretty steep here in the UK (about $1.20 per litre) and my gas bill is now about $1500 per year. Electricity prices have also been hiked up due to a lot of the electricity being generated using gas.
I had looked into solar panels but cause of my age I didn't think I would see the pay back on the investment. My home is all electric with a gas cooktop and fireplace. I will be going with electric efficient appliances when it's time for replacements. Maybe sooner if is cost effective. Thanks Doug and take care
Where are you venting the cold line outside? We are thinking of venting it into our furnace during summer to act as a pseudo air conditioner and then ducting it outside during winter.

Thanks, the water heater has really lowered my energy consumption and can see it on my power bill. Take care
6 months and no problems sounds perfect to me thanks Lloyd
Thanks Bob, hope it can keep this savings up
Looks like it's gonna save you a ton of money Bud!! What's the life expectancy of something like that!!☻
It has a claim of 10 years on the tank, 10 years on the parts and 1 year on the labor. Looks pretty good. Thanks Buddy
Im reading up on it now.
I'm not disappointed with it at all. Thanks Buzz
Great review. That is a great saving and payback
Thanks, I have really been impressed with it performance and the money it has saved.
Win, Win
I have been very happy how well it has done. Thanks GZ

Hi Lloyd! That's some impressive savings! Thanks for the video. Best regards.
Thanks for watching Todd. Yep , as the time comes I will be willing to try other updates for the added savings
Looks like it's doing a good job Lloyd
Thanks Tom, hope it can keep it up...lol.
Gotta like those savings
It is really proving its worth saving that much money compared to the other one. Thanks Ron
That is a great saving. Thanks for sharing.
It's definitely saving the money and will pay for itself in a few weeks. Thanks
Sounds like a Great investment Lloyd !
Thanks Shawn, This should big savings as time move forward
a normal water heater is a pretty big electric eater, this looks like will be much better.
It sure is, our electric bill has gone down about $30 a month. Thanks Vernon
It's a nice, clean install and it's good to hear that the unit is working out for you.
Thanks, this has been purchase and worth the effort to install

Smartphone apps are very convenient.
A triple layer hose is effective.
Thank you my friend.
Thank you my friend, the water heater has surpassed my expectations. Have a great weekend
Wow, that's quite a good savings Lloyd! Definitely something to look into for my water heater replacement. Thanks for the review!
I would agree Ken, I'm very impressed with it and looking for other appliances to try when the time comes. Thanks
Thank you for some great information. I am ordering mine tomorrow!
That may be cheaper to run than my NT gas one
I wished I had Natural gas for my house. I would run everything I could with it. Thanks Terry
@@RustyGlovebox Yea i live in the middle of nowhere , but lucky to have NT gas here
Hei Lloyd ..that's very cheap and nice thanks for sharing
Thanks Dam, have a Blessed time and enjoy your farm

That could be done but I wanted to cool the garage down. It doesn't make a big difference but does help in the summer months. Thanks
👍🌞
Thanks Mel, it is a real money saver.
Just out of curiosity how loud does the unit get when in heat pump mode?
It's not bad, we have ours in the garage closet so we never hear it in the house.
