I normally agree with you dude, but not this time. I do see some of your critiques but I felt this entry was overall a fun time reminiscent of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon. Being back in NY I think lent itself to some over done nostalgia, but I for one welcomed it. I enjoyed the hell out of it.
been watching you since I was 12 now im almost 24. Just want you to know you are the absolute man love the consistency and love all you do. cheers my friend.
Spot on review. Watched it last night with my 11 year old son. He enjoyed it but I felt there were way too many characters, a plot with potential but not fully realised, etc They should have left it at Afterlife, or, if they feel the need to keep the franchise going, take a completely new direction in the Ghostbusters ‘universe’.
Best review, you expressed exactly everything that I couldn't find words for. The biggest problem as you said is the multitude of characters, the movie is like in a million places at the same time and it ends up feeling convoluted and forced. Also so much screen time wasted going nowhere, like the Slimer scenes.
They shouldve let the Spengler family move on, the whole afterlife cast wasn't need for Frozen Empire, it should've been Winson restarting the whole new GB group with actual recruits. and not a silly family.
It makes no sense to bring a family into danger needlessly. They could simply have kept Paul Rudd as a nod to the previous film and to help the geriatrics with the physical stuff.
Yeah, i mean, where is winston's family story? I think dan akroyd has said in interviews that for the original 1984 film winston was meant to be a genius type professor. So, in the original scripts for ghostbusters winston was a very smart guy, and I'd love to get vack to that, give winston more to do.
If i was Winston i would hire like trained army professionals as Ghostbusters and not diversity team emo kids who turn ghost collaborator over some ethereal lesbo action
You have officially become a critic. Or maybe going into it having seen this lowered my expectations, which enabled me to enjoy it the way it should have been. I wasn't bored, found it fun but not funny. Yes, there are good points Jeremy makes. There is too much going on at times, but that doesn't ruin it. A better director would could have enhanced it.
The first two Ghostbusters (1984 & 1989) are from a different era. An era of talent, where people could come up with an original idea. Does anyone in Hollywood have a shred of creativity left in them?
original idea? ALien(s) alien 3 jaws 2-4? Hollywood was always bad you all are jsu tignoring the good in modern hollywood. There was far more trash in the 80s but you all ignore that to focus on the diamonds. so stfu . all the predator sequels. all the die hard sequels....all the robocop sequels.....the movies for toys?
I do appreciate your honesty, Jeremy. This is not the news I wanted to hear cuz I was looking forward to enjoying myself watching this over the weekend. I hope it's similar to hearing your review of Jurassic world, where I did find some enjoyment in it. Thank you though, I will manage my expectations and go in this knowing how disappointing it can be.
When I heard reviews this morning as I was getting ready to see it, I thought, oh these are younger ppl, another generation, they don't get it (the OGs), but now I agree. The best thing I can say about the movie w/o spoilers is that it made me want to see the original and there's no need for a soundtrack, it pretty much mirrors the original throughout, which was kinda nice, and Ernie looks great! The really funny parts were few and far between. Timing was off. It was nice to see the OGs, but, yeah, they need to give it up.
u know what would be sick, if they are gonna make a r-rated ghostbusters movie with the boogeyman, ppl would love this and the boogeyman should look like the one in the cartoon that would be hella scary with some brutal kills!
Are you serious? 80s was crazy full of sequels. In that decade we got 6 police academy movies, 4 Nightmare on Elm Street, 8 Friday the 13th, 6 James Bond, just to name a few. Now, granted movies back then seemed to be more enjoyable, but let's not act like Hollywood didn't take an idea and if it made a lot money didn't stuff it down our throats as many times as they could back then.
I love how there's already like 5 or 6 notifications in my RUclips account and all of them posted Ghostbusters Frozen Empire review at the same time. I know it's the whole embargo thing but it's still kinda funny how it's all posted on youtube at the same time 😂
The reason why Afterlife was so good was because it did none of the things you mentioned in this video, maybe Jason should’ve directed this one also, but either way.. I’m still looking forward to it!
To cite for those that don't know. The critics shit on Ghostbusters 2 when it came out. For a long time until recently it was always hailed as a bad movie. Even Bill Murray used its non-success as an excuse for a while to not do another one. I am saying this one will probably be the modern version of that. Ironic since one of the plans for this movie was to do another vigo but they scrapped that idea. Probably for the better, who knows. I liked Ghostbusters 2.
I absolutely adored Afterlife. From the trailers of Frozen Empire, I'm under the impression it doesn't have the heart that Afterlife had. This review confirmed this.
I really enjoyed the film but I felt there were too many characters introduced. I loved seeing the OG characters back! There were a lot of instances where I thought the scene plot would have a great pay off but it fell short and I was left underwhelmed. Regardless, I still suggest going and checking it out in the theaters for the fun factor, clear your mind, grab some popcorn 🍿 an icee...then enjoy! But for my hardcore diehard fans of the franchise, just a heads up it might not be your cup of tea but I still feel you will enjoy your time watching the proton packs/og crew return to the big screen and you will find yourself laughing at some slapstick one liners but I would suggest not going in with high hopes....I told myself leaving the theater, maybe on the next one 🤞
Naw, Murray is just phoning it in these days. Ramis said you had to put his best scenes at the beginning of a shoot because he would get bored quickly and his performance would suffer.
Let me say this, if the original ghostbusters was to release right now in theatres i gurantee it would gain more excitement and a bigger audience than frozen empire.
@@anubusx I wouldn't know ill never waste a second of my life watching it. They did the same thing to the Indiana Jones franchise. Hollywood likes destroying their own creations
Spot on review! Just saw it yesterday. I can handle nostalgia feelers and fan service, in fact, i dont think its always a bad thing, but when a movie just doesn't make sense im done with it. The characters all do things that just feel so forced or out of character.
Knowing Jeremy he probably going to be more harsh on it since he hasn’t been a fan of the monsterverse and after Godzilla Minus One he’s now probably thinks that every Godzilla movie needs to be Oscar worthy.

While I appreciate your review, and do agree with some of the pacing and story issues, I really enjoyed this film. It felt great to be back in NYC at the firehouse busting ghosts. I thought the overall story worked for the sequel, and I enjoyed the family dynamic in the film. My kids loved it, as did the audience. I also really enjoyed the nostalgia nods. Overall, I think it's a good Ghostbusters film, and I hope to see more from this new era.

At this point. They really need to make a rated R movie based on this infamous historic figure from the 15/16th century titled. The Blood Countess Elizabeth Bathory. I would like a movie like that since we have not gotten a proper one for years.
I would prefer a proper Blood Countess movie based on the infamous historic figure from the 15/16 century named Elizabeth Bathory who bathes in the blood of young girls and of course drinks their blood and devours their flesh. The reason why she would do this is because it would make her younger and more beautiful when in reality she had a massive mental problem.
@@vincebravo674problem is if it just mental problem, why every person met her said she's more beautiful everytime they met her? Its called magi and in my culture, we did have similar magic but consequences is that person wont enter paradise
I knew that this movie was going to be overloaded. I just knew it. How did I know? Because EVERY TIME that I come up with an idea for a fallen franchise, Hollywood ends up bringing it back IN A SLOPPY WAY. EVERY. TIME. Screw it, I may as well tell everyone my Ghostbusters idea… doesn’t matter anymore. My ideal (back before the 2016 reboot) was to make Ghostbusters a live action TV series on Netflix. 6 to 8 episodes that follow different Ghostbuster teams from different parts of the world, and fight ghosts that reflect their culture, folklore, and filmmaking. For example, you do an episode in Scotland, where you feature a NEW team fighting a ghost in a haunted castle, and shoot it in the style of horror films from the UK in the early 80s. Then, you can do an episode in Japan with a DIFFERENT team of Ghostbusters, and they fight a culturally significant ghost, and shoot the episode like a Japanese horror film from the 90s. And, so forth and so on. That way, you can spend as much time developing concepts, and introducing as many characters as you want without over saturating an hour and a half movie with too much information. … then, when that season ends… coming next summer to a theatre near you, the world ending apocalyptic supernatural event happens that requires all of the different Ghostbuster teams to ASSEMBLE comes out in cinemas! Personally, I can’t think of a better way to make Ghostbusters a TRUE world phenomenon! I mean, why do ghosts show up in New York ONLY? Don’t they have ghosts in India? Come ON! Who wouldn’t want to see a Bollywood style Ghostbusters adventure? Or, if America wants to be represented more, do an episode in Louisiana! They fight the supernatural as well! So, imagine a team of southern Ghostbusters with the old Creole accents going after a voodoo cult! Do a Google search right now for Ghostbusters Fan Clubs, and see all the different types of ghost-busting equipment, and vehicles that fans have come up with! Think of how WORLD REACHING that would be! Oh, well… like I said… EVERY TIME that I come up with an idea for a failing franchise… (long defeated sigh)… Batman has been redone so many times that there’s barely any originality left to my idea. Indiana Jones is DEAD, so scrap that dream. Hollywood screwed up G.I. Joe TWICE. Netflix botched their sitcom about Blockbuster Video. Anyway, thanks for confirming my suspicions about “Frozen Empire”, Jeremy. I’m still going to see it… at some point. Maybe. When I’m feeling depressed.

I really enjoyed it. All in all, while flawed, it had a nicely original premise, took the franchise a HUGE step forward and in a good direction, setting up further world building and spinoffs (potentially). A bit messy, yes but it was fun, it was HEARTFELT, which is important, and as long as they take more care with the next film, we could end up with a solid, refreshed continuation of the franchise that could be a lot of fun.
Even from the trailers it was obvious there were too many characters. No clear focus. Moving back to the city was a bad move too, in my opinion. A new location, even a different city like Seattle or Albuquerque or something we havent seen as much would be more interesting.
Dude! I would love to see Ghostbusters vs Men In Black! Do you know how many alien ghost ideas would be perfect for that crossover? And having the MIB citing how major incidents in the first two Ghostbusters movies affected their jurisdiction? It almost writes itself!
Don’t worry about doing bad reviews friend. The burden of quality falls on Hollywood, if they want better ticket sales, better word of mouth, and better reviews, then make better movies.
Dan Aykroyd was very good and it was fantastic to see him back in action! I really enjoyed how the movie felt like it actually took place in New York. I’m so used to CGI environments. The library lion scene was my favorite
I am not sure I agree with everything you said. But I just got back from seeing the movie and something put me off from it a bit. I would say it's better that T-Minus 1 day, maybe better with alcohol or something. But while I was driving home, I do think I have to agree that there was just to much going on and to many people. Like you said a lot of people unnecessary to the plot who seemed to only be there because of the last movie. I would loved to have seen the big bad a bit more once it escaped though. Felt like maybe he could have used a bit more build up really showing off his full power. I guess I was also put off a bit by the Melody character too, not the acting or anything. But more so the concept of the character not really feeling in line with what she was. As far as ranking. 1) Ghostbusters '84 - obviously 2) Afterlife - I will catch some flak for this I am sure and I know a lot of people were bored by the film. But I thought it was a great original story and nice tribute that treated the original with respect it didn't get from a certain other stain on the franchise. 3) Ghostbusters II - I grew up watching this with the original. Because I was so young I never hated this one. It doesn't work quite as well as the original and the plot is a little to close to the same thing as the first film. 4) Frozen Empire - Like I said, not perfect. Still had fun and enjoyed it. Don't regret seeing it in theaters. But just too much going on. 10) Ghostbusters '16 - There was a couple of aspects of this film I liked when it came out, but I largely disliked most of it and my dislike has only gotten stronger as they weaponized the concept of "Toxic Fandom" to defend a movie a lot of people viewed as bad with legitimate reason. I could probably write a short novel on why I dislike this film and why I think it's inferior to everything else on this list by a country mile. But that's been done before.
Yes, if you don't have emotional ties to it you'll be able to enjoy it for what it is. Just a dumb fun movie with some laughs. It just rarely feels like a Ghostbusters movie.
I just found this on Netflix, 10 minutes ago. 15 minutes ago, I had no idea this movie existed, and I really liked Ghostbusters Afterlife! How did I miss this in the theaters? 🤔 🤷♀️
I honestly did not like Afterlife, the kids were very annoying, and there’s no way a little kid is going to be handling a heavy ass proton pack let alone shoot one with accuracy. Ivo Shandor was still alive but died after 10 seconds of screen time, a huge waste of J.K. Simmons. Gozer obviously forgot that he/she was immune to proton blast or dodge them like in the first movie. Plus Gozer should’ve returned in the form of stay puff because that was the form that was chosen for the earth dimension. The hundreds of ghost traps around the house but there’s no containment unit? I just didn’t like it. I’ll be skipping frozen empire. 1. Ghost Busters 1 2. Ghost Busters 2 3. Ghost Busters The video game 4. Ghost Busters Afterlife 5. Ghost Busters 2016
Appreciate an honest review. Gonna see it, but unfortunately, many of todays movies seem to be assembled, rather than created-- insert comedy here; memberberries here, cameo here -- and there's rarely a coherent story.
Is there a Child's Play/Chucky reference in the movie just like there was in Afterlife or not? (By reference basically in Afterlife there was a snippet of 1988 movie Child's Play) Is there something similar in Frozen Empire?
I KNEW IT! I could tell from the numerous clips they’ve released, which all had not only the WORST dialogue I’ve heard in a film since the last 10 Marvel movies,, but delivered with ZERO enthusiasm. All the clips were boring… like they were trying to hide the fact that the rest of the film was going to be as dull. Thanks for confirming my suspicions Jeremy. I’ve come to trust your opinions.
I LOVED Afterlife! Not only was it a great follow up, it was a good film on its own as a jumping on point for new viewers. I was so excited for this film but the more they showed of it, the less enthusiastic I was, to the point I’m debating even going to see it in the theater.
I admit I was entertained because I knew what was coming cameo-wise and in terms of nostalgia bate. I mean, there are good ideas there, good set ups, Visuals that landed well (i liked the posessor jumping through the glass) ... I am a sucker for the new tech and uniforms (black version and the red parkas are cool) ... a ghost posessing the Ecto 1 and even a proton gun is an entertaining idea. The proton packs of all things being rendered useless is a good idea. But they threw those ideas away super quick. And the solutions (if there where any) where sloppy at best. Bill Murray interrogating Kumail Nanjiani could have been a highlight if they wanted to, but the only idea they had with that was throwing pens... oh well. Thematically they could have gone with characters growing "emotionally cold and distant" with each other, maybe even exacerbated by paranormal influence of the chill "ice ghost" (kerlens of that where there with the original team growing apart and also of course Phoebes arc)... then unite again in a meaningful way to defeat the guy. Well, i could go on, but in the end it just made me shrug and say "Jep. That happend."
Bill Murray actually seems to be in a good mood while doing publicity for this movie, which should tell you how much money they gave him.
not really, he always gets a good deal of money. The difference is he isn't being strong armed into doing it like he was with GB2016 and GB2.

Spot on review.
Watched it last night with my 11 year old son. He enjoyed it but I felt there were way too many characters, a plot with potential but not fully realised, etc
They should have left it at Afterlife, or, if they feel the need to keep the franchise going, take a completely new direction in the Ghostbusters ‘universe’.
This movie is booty, and not good booty either. Bad smelly booty you don’t have fun in.

@Sclimenti82 Hey shut up!
There have been good and bad movies in every "era"
Ghostbusters 2 tanked. It was mediocre at best.
Whoa
"Ghostbusters: The Video Game" was top notch, and that came out in 2009.
It was nice to see the OGs, but, yeah, they need to give it up.
u know what would be sick, if they are gonna make a r-rated ghostbusters movie with the boogeyman, ppl would love this
and the boogeyman should look like the one in the cartoon that would be hella scary with some brutal kills!
My ranking
1. Ghostbusters
I'm happy you still critique with a thoughtful eye. Thx!
This makes me nostalgic for the 80s when we had original ideas.
Are you serious? 80s was crazy full of sequels. In that decade we got 6 police academy movies, 4 Nightmare on Elm Street, 8 Friday the 13th, 6 James Bond, just to name a few. Now, granted movies back then seemed to be more enjoyable, but let's not act like Hollywood didn't take an idea and if it made a lot money didn't stuff it down our throats as many times as they could back then.
god this statment is retrded....hollywood was ALWAYS the same from the 20s to now...saying one era was better is jsut retrded
And people during the 80s said the same thing about the 60s.
Peeps like you need to stop acting like everything that came out of the 80s was a masterpiece.
I say this as someone who loves 80s culture.
Not just about good ideas, it's about actors who can make an average idea into a superb idea.

Did not expect a Magic card reference, nice! Also stood out to me in the trailer.
Bill Murray's character is one of the main characters in the first films. Putting him in the background is like putting Batman behind the bat family!
Yeah, if Batman was aging like milk and in a wheelchair
Naw, Murray is just phoning it in these days. Ramis said you had to put his best scenes at the beginning of a shoot because he would get bored quickly and his performance would suffer.
Try explaining that to Bill Murray. I'll wait.
Let me say this, if the original ghostbusters was to release right now in theatres i gurantee it would gain more excitement and a bigger audience than frozen empire.
Bill Murray's character had way more to do in this movie than he had in Afterlife.

At this point. They really need to make a rated R movie based on this infamous historic figure from the 15/16th century titled. The Blood Countess Elizabeth Bathory. I would like a movie like that since we have not gotten a proper one for years.
Not a bad idea. Would probably make like 0 dollars though.
Would you like Hayley Atwell to play the infamous Blood Countess?
Fright Night 2 has Jaime Murray playing her. Not the best movie, but she makes a great vampire.

Most modern movies : Cool scenes to look at and... nothing else.
Why are we not funding this idea?
I would 100% watch the show you just pitched.

Man, they really should've made Ghostbusters vs MIB on 23 Jump Street instead😢
Dude! I would love to see Ghostbusters vs Men In Black! Do you know how many alien ghost ideas would be perfect for that crossover? And having the MIB citing how major incidents in the first two Ghostbusters movies affected their jurisdiction? It almost writes itself!

1) Ghostbusters '84 - obviously
2) Afterlife - I will catch some flak for this I am sure and I know a lot of people were bored by the film.
I'll still give it a watch and likely find some enjoyment. Thanks for your hard work Jeremy!
Yes, if you don't have emotional ties to it you'll be able to enjoy it for what it is. Just a dumb fun movie with some laughs. It just rarely feels like a Ghostbusters movie.

Its a shame cause outside the slightly forced nostalgia bait, I really enjoyed Afterlife and saw a lot of potential for this iteration of the series
I LOVED Afterlife! Not only was it a great follow up, it was a good film on its own as a jumping on point for new viewers. I was so excited for this film but the more they showed of it, the less enthusiastic I was, to the point I’m debating even going to see it in the theater.
You didn't know anything because you're listening to out of touch reviewers. The movie was good and the audience scores match that.
