    Japanese floor mattresses are thinner and are usually lifted up and regularly aired. Leaving a western style mattress on the floor without ventilation may increase moisture and mold build up I would have thought

    • @MyFocusVaries
      @MyFocusVaries 3 месяца назад +7

      It absolutely would. I've seen it. A mattress on the floor without at least a pallet type frame causes mold growth and permanent staining of laminate floors. Unless you lift the mattress every morning to air for the day

    This was a very educational and wonderful episode and Alexandra did a great job hosting. 🙌 I was floored (pun intended) by how little I knew about how Japanese Interior Design had such a global impact. So cool!

    I am 69 but way back in the early 1970's my first pass at designing my teen bedroom was a low to the floor Japanese aesthetic. While I have moved on to other things, I still love the feeling of peace my first attempt at design gave me

    Until the 1950s Indians would sit and eat on the floor. We slept on floors sometimes, esp when we had guests. And that generaion is waaay more flexible than me.

    When I travelled around North Africa and the Middle East, most things were done on the floor, including sleeping eating, tea time and going to the bathroom. Squatting not chairs for thousands of years.
    This style of living is much healthier for the body too

    If your bed is on the floor, the real question is: do you take off your shoes when you come indoors? If your floor has outdoor dirt on it, then the bed on that same floor is an issue. If your floor is kept clean, not a problem.

      Japanese are big on taking off their outside shoes and wearing slippers inside the home. The same is true for many other cultures.

    Japan is just hyped. In India , people have been sleeping on the floor, removing and airing their mattresses regularly and even eating and sitting on the floors....

      I don't understand how Japan is a hype. They also do things on the floor. Many cultures have shared traditions. It doesn't make them a "hype."

    I would think that the low to the ground style in Japan also came from the threat of Earthquakes. In terms of practicality at least.
