OMGosh...I'm 86 years old and I've been living this way all of my life! WHO KNEW??? I was shocked, but thanks for putting a name to 'my' design style. Blessings! 😊❤
Ah! So #Cottagecore is really #Retirementcore. I’m fully embracing this in my actual cottage interior design. (I’m 57 and retired.) More tea, books, and gardening for me…!
I have a renewed respect for Ariel after watching all these Wayfair videos on design styles. She did a fantastic job. She should be sought out by PBS and other networks for narration of instructional or documentary videos. Bravo!
Ariel, you are the perfect person for this. You do such great work pulling together your resources and thinking carefully about your topic. Your delivery brings depth without yawns and humor without cheese. I’ve always loved your mix of sincerity and goofiness and it fits here perfectly. Well done and best of luck with this series. ❤️🍀❤️
I love so many design styles . It’s like Great-grandmas home. My son has this sort of vibe going on . All the decor is bought at vintage shops and flea markets.
I will never be sick of Cottage style. That’s my home, my grandparents and my home growing up. It’s comfy, welcoming and feels like a warm hug. In a rather large family our home was not the biggest but everyone always seemed to want to gather here for holidays etc. I enjoyed cooking and canning and entertaining but I always wondered why we didn’t go to one of the bigger homes. Well now that I’m older I know.
I really appreciate your presentation, great job!!! Cottage core is not new. Country Living magazine(1978), Country Home magazine(1984), Cottage Life(1988), Victoria magazine which is Granny core and cottage core style, (1987-2003), just to name a few. And of course, all of those magazines showed us what country and cottage living has always been like. I for one love the cottage style, "mediumist",peaceful, nostalgic, and oh so cozy. It's the kind of home and style that feels like a hug every time you come through the front door, or in the country, the back door, lol. Thanks Ariel, that was wonderful. 🤗
I grew up on a dairy farm in the Fraser Valley, enjoyed a William Morris exhibit at the V&A in 1996 and am knitting as I enjoy this delightful exploration. Thanks so much for sending me over here from your book tube channel
I really am enjoying their series and learning much more about the history of styles, I am definitely Cottage Core, even though I did not realize it, it’s me to a core! Thank you for sharing.
Looks at Ariel! Went from books, books, book, to homemaker and decorator! Great video, makes me feel better about liking this style because sometimes it can feel like it is mostly old junk, but I see now that it's more sentimental and emphasis on slowing down... I like that.
Ariel, your red gingham was the perfect choice for the essence of cottage. Cottage core is similar to shabby chic, and country in that it depicts old fashioned simple, and hand me downs with sentimentality.
Two Ariels in one day! I have always been cottage core. My first house was a Victorian fixer upper and I furnished it with vintage finds from garage sales out of necessities. I grew food and canned it, sewed clothing and quilts and made things for my home. When I got older and had plenty of money I didn't change. Now that I am retired I moved to a stone cottage and have plenty of time to embrace my cottage core. The only thing I don't like is cottage core clothes, I prefer to dress like the 70's hippie I am.
It’s not a new idea, just a new branding. In the 70’s, there were lots of homes of that style. It was mostly older people then. I knew several families that were perfectly cottage core style. Always my favorite style.
Exactly. To me it is like a more frilly, feminine country style, the way it used to be back in the 60's, 70's and 80's, like you mentioned. Country is what people call now farmhouse, but I mean the classic farmhouse, not the suburban faux farmhouse.
Exactly! It was called English Cottage style here in the USA. You can find books about the style that are decades old. Cottagecore is essentially the Cotswolds aesthetic, and it's been around for centuries.
This historical dive made me even more appreciative of the aesthetic, thanks for this analysis that draws so many fascinating connections. I really enjoyed watching it and would love to check out Mona's book too!
I finally watched this video, a referral from your channel, Ariel. This was very interesting and truly delightful, you were the perfect person to narrate this video and style. Not only entertaining but packed with tons of history information. TY
Really enjoyed this video, and not just because it's my favourite style in the series so far. Well explained, and I love the links to history. Great job Ariel!
I also love how eco-friendly cottage-core is: repurposing, thrifting, garden to table, etc. Ariel, you are a badass! A girl who loves books and power tools and a viral painted door jam is a badass in my world.
This whole concept reminds me of the movie The Holiday and her cozy cottage in comparison to the huge LA Mansion. That's probably why I gravitate towards that film because the coziness is comforting. 🥰
Loved this video! I especially enjoyed the part where Ariel sat down in a field to discuss cottage core, I'd love to see future shots of you being surrounded by the aesthetic/style you're talking about where possible. My only piece of advice would be the interview with Mona, as the camera focused on you while you introduced the conversation and it took a while for us to even meet and see who the guest was. I would have loved to just see her wave in the camera while you introduced her, so we know who you're talking to. Other than that, this video was super informative and incredibly well-put together! The editing is absolutely wonderful and I can't wait for more episodes
Have a look at the term Biophilia. I also think the mainstreaming of prepper ideas may be an influence. You need to know how to cook, knit or crochet, sew, make furniture, make salves and possets for basic medical care. I think that may be a cultural influence that is hidden under the willow tree beauty of cottagecore.
Country Living UK magazine has been around for decades. Victoria magazine was around for years then it folded but has come back in the last few years. Both did country/relaxed traditional/arts/crafts/cooking/gardening romanticism & nostalgia years and years before "cottage core". CC just stuck a new label on what has been around for a long time. It isn't new just because the twenty somethings noticed it. However what they did do is document it with inauthentic narrative photo's endlessly. Hustling for clicks and likes.
Yes that is just plainly a new label for a much older style. The young think that what they like now , was invented by them, when in reality is just a revival of older, forgotten styles.
This series is the perfect combination of history, interior design, and Ariel… three of my favorite type of videos to watch on RUclips.

This series makes me feel so happy. I hope you invite Ariel to do more of these videos.
We're glad to hear it made you happy! We've got several more videos planned with Ariel. Stay tuned!

She makes great content

Such a great story!
Rewatching this, because I love this style and Ariel's content so much. @Wayfair, where are the new episodes you promised everyone?
Ariel- I love how authentic you are! That last line made my day... the bugs won't leave me alone, HA! You're amazing!!!

We're so happy to hear you're enjoying the series!
Oh my god! I really was not expecting Mona to show up in this video, what a delightful surprise : D
Ariel + cottagecore?! I feel like this video was made for me. Ariel’s content is always perfection! 💐
The Morris quote has been my guiding light for years. And now I think I'll go play the Cottage Living pack in Sims 4. 🙂
Ariel is just perfect on this series. So informative yet so approachable 😍
Thanks for watching!

I adore the use of miniatures in this series!
She's great at them. And I love the one in her dining (?) room.
Idk how they found Ariel but I love it! Love! I haven't felt this happy to watch something since HGTV started their series with Rajiv Surendra.
She has a RUclips channel of her own 🙂
@@bookllama8158 lol thanks I know.
how do you find it? Is searching for Ariel sufficient?
@@susanperry4177 search ariel bissett.. her style is so cute and she's great. You won't be disappointed.
another wonderful episode! Such great information presented in an understandable, easy to translate into action way. Looking forward to the next one.m
Another absolutely amazing video! Thank you Ariel. You are the best.

She addresses this in the video. It goes back as far as there has been an urban/rural.
Excellent talk. Frolick!!

I started watching Ariel when she was in her apartment years ago. What a lovely home she is creating ♥️

Fantastic video. Loved the background history. Wayfair owes you a raise (and many referrals)!
Loved this! That Morris quote is also a huge one and I'm loving the cottage vibes recently as well.
Ahh these videos are so cozy and inspiring
We think so too
I just know Ariel is the most lovely creator to work with
You would be correct 😀
Love this style education idea!
Does anyone remember the country craze of the 1980’s? Our houses were full of rag rugs and Priscilla curtains, lots of ducks and geese.
Oh yeah. That is what they call now cottage core, definitely.
Yes, but we need to leave the ducks and geese back there in the past 😊
I love bits of cottage core with a 70s 60s bohemian flare in my home
This whole concept reminds me of the movie The Holiday and her cozy cottage in comparison to the huge LA Mansion. That's probably why I gravitate towards that film because the coziness is comforting. 🥰
Agree🏡
Absolutely love it!! Keep up the great work Ariel!!
Amazing series! I love it soooo much

I go further and move all the furniture into a space under a treetrunk. That is where I live.

Danish Pastel episode??? ❤
Beatrix Potter!!
Timing of Cottagecore is a reaction to a couple of decades of minimalism and mid century modern sterility.
Everything old is new again... Fashion and decor trends go in cycles and always have, and not all younger people are hustling.
No mention of Thomas Kinkade? The houses -- with landscaping -- in his paintings were amazing.
I've been reading about him - thanks for the prompt.
Some like big houses i love small houses
bucolic?
I'm new to the channel but I'm betting Ariel doesn't have a cat. Way to many little cute items sitting around for a kitty to be in the house!
The audio levels in this video was all over the place and made it kinda difficult to watch...
So it's a dollhouse room.
