Small correction on 2:30 ... Morocco was never influenced by the ottoman empire cause the ottomans never conquered morocco. They only made it to algeria close to the moroccan border. Besides that great video!
You are mispleading many false information , like Ottomans never controlled Morocco and they had no connection with Moroccan style , another common mistake saying Andalusian inspired Moroccan while it's actually the other way around. it's the Moroccans that went and built Andalusia while occupying it such as when Almohades and Almoravids empires were controlling it.
ottomans didn't expanded to Morocco , but the Algerian immigrants during the french colonialism made sure to bring their Algerian Caftans their , many kouloughlis escaped from Algeria to Morocco , and if you read the book Algerians in Tetouane you will see how yoinwere influnced by both Algerians and Ottomans
I learned that when I first saw this young lady years ago on a small you tube channel that has blown up and now has wonderful well deserved opportunities ahead of her. This may be one of the best design history videos around. I don't know who did all the research for this (Alexandra?) but it really gives an historical perspective and context that you don't normally see with design videos. A lot of work went to prepare this and some great production features to make it look so good. Alexandra is a natural in her delivery (Scripted? or ad lib or a combo of both?) of the presentation. Brava, Alexandra!
When Alex asked the question “what is Moroccan style”, I thought “watch out, girl-mine field” but was actually pleasantly surprised. Whoever wrote that script is a genius.
I am a true bohemian eclectic from the 70's with a deep love of Moroccan, Indian and Persian decor. But what I want to tell you is to watch Only Lovers Left Alive with Tom Hiddelston and Tilda Swinton. Some of it is filmed in Morocco. But It is just a very weird film noir and this talk of Morocco reminded me of it.
As algerian north african i can tell you that Morocco has alot if places that shows it's identity that would make you amazed . Morocco Algeria and Tunisia have shaired cultural features and at the same time they are different so they represent the country you are in . although i realy love your design and since am interested in all what is architecture and design i feel that the final results are cold no matter how cozy they are to find out that it represent your cultur and your country

Morocco has over 18 architectural design styles. The documentary is amazing, except for the map you introduced in the beginning. It does disrespect the Moroccan sovereignty over its territory. Also, moroccan architecture has never been influenced by ottomans because Morocco has never been under the ottoman empire's authority. So, what you are seeing, is a mixture of Amazigh, Arab , islamic and pure moroccan culture
Part of Morocco around Fez had vassal status to the Ottoman Empire on 3 occasions during the 16th century so I guess it had some influence on the country.
This is a WONDERFUL exploration. (Any negative comments by others should be taken with a grain of salt - they missed the “playful” quality of the video and the beginning disclaimer that you were NOT the History Channel or trying to do a PHd Thesis.) There are many styles around the world - FEW outside Europe penetrate North American culture. Moroccan, Thai, Japanese and a smattering of African kingdoms fall into that “FEW” category. However, Moroccan was the BIGGEST SPLASH in the Hippy world and Rock-n-Roll was the Hippy method of entrance - because they WENT THERE. My former Sufi Master, Sidi Al Jamal, often spoke of how many Hippies showed up in Morocco - to the point he came to America and started several schools so they wouldn’t have to travel so far. He said that most of the Sufi masters simply closed their doors when the Hippies showed up. But they kept coming and coming and after a while and several THOUSAND pilgrims, the Sufi Masters opened their doors and began teaching. So, Alexandra Gater nailed her explanation. ~ Everyone, please be kind to her. Not only is she one of my “favorites,” but her heart to “share” the beauty of their culture is in the correct place. Sidi would have loved meeting her, but passed on in 2015. To all who love the style - enjoy. It is a wonderful foray. Wayfair ! LUCKY YOU. She’s a keeper!
You should check the colorful rafia shoes. I do not remember if there's in Marakesh. I had bought one from Essauira years ago and I'm still wearing (now rarely not to wear out more). There were lots of. Some of them are so stylish and have a sort of luxury boho look. If you google, you may also find ones not this way though.
I watch the channel "Bosworth Property Marrakech" to get my Moroccan decor inspiration. Tours of beautifully decorated riads and villas within the Medina. It gives me tons of ideas and seeing all these lovely places and being able to replicate many aspects, gives me loads of happiness.
would have loved to hear more about how morrocan and bohemian styles are conflated, confused, and blended in different settings. it would also be cool to know WHY ppl are so drawn to these styles in present day. i also notice that these styles are overused in tourist traps across the globe, to convey a sense of luxury for american travelers specifically.
You should visit Ghardaia, this city was the one that made the bohemian style ages before cinema was a thing , you can read about their architecture and rugs

Andalous was built by North Africans not the other way around look for the book of the zirids of Granda, the Castles of Casbah of Zirids is older thn Andalous (9th Century) , same for the ottomams they tooo more thn what they left, North African architecture is lighter than the ottoman one, and our zallige tiles are different, even their clothes were inspired by Algerian Majboud embroidery, which they saw in Gandoura Constantinoise and Algerian Kadi Caftan, And they took the Algerian Jabadouli which is the attite of Algerian navy that controlled the Mediterranean sea once "Rias Lbahr " " Regancy Of Algiers" , and later the french spread it to europe under the name Zouave Jacket ( Zouave are Algerian traitors group so they can hide the name of Rias Lbahr that france hated for losing to them many times " , i hope you check old history books( very old ones) bcz some touristic countries encourage perfectionist cultural appropriation for the sake of tourism
Morocco was not occupied by the Ottomans and was not affected by their culture. Andalusia was ruled by the Moroccans for 800 years. All the Islamic buildings in Andalusia, Spain today, were built by the Almoravids and Almohads.😊😊😊
Can somebody explain to me why Moroccan-inspired style is called Bohemian when Bohemia is in central Europe, in the Czech Republic to be precise? Is this just a misnomer?
Bohemian style is synonym , in aesthetic terms, to Moroccan, among other similar cultures, because of its diversity, eclectic quality, longevity and its cultural richness. Plus, a person with a true bohemian style collects all these cultures' items and aesthetics and incorporate them into their own personal style. Bohemian decor is a mix of cultures and decor styles all in one, from all your travels and the items you collect in them.
@vaderladyl Thank you. However, it is still odd to me to use 'Bohemian' for a style coming from Morocco given that Morocco is on another continent and nowhere near the geographical region called Bohemia.
@@velinap Yes it does sound odd when you look at it from the historical, geographical point of view but from the Interior Design point of view it is just an umbrella term to include all these many, different styles that come mostly from the eastern side. That is how it is seen in this industry. Bohemian is an amalgamation of styles, and in modern times can include any two or more styles together, eastern or western.
It is cultural thousand of years old that is Islamic, which blends with environment and it is simple and classic ! There is middle eastern, African cultures blend as well it is amazing !
It's great to get inspired by another's country culture and art and even make a video talking about the mesmerising moroccan interior design,as u said in your video it would take another life time to just understand moroccan diverse rich culture yet it takes just few seconds to research a country's map that you re making a video about and ironically travelled to,it's insulting to casually crop another's country map in 2 consecutive videos(one here and the same on your channel):calling the moroccan sahara the Western sahara. And by the way the script contrains a lot of wrong info and badly written ,videos like this should be more deeply researched instead of misleading people.

I bought a Moroccan rug a few months ago for my living room and it is the number one piece in my home that everyone loves.
Such an easy way to make your home cozy!
