  • Welcome to A Style is Born, hosted by RUclipsr, stylist, and DIY icon Alexandra Gater! To kick off Season 3 of A Style Is Born, we explore the history of floor culture as a part of Japanese interior design. In Japan, floor culture has to do with more than functionality, it’s a philosophy. So next time you see a friend with their mattress directly on the floor, know that they might actually be onto something.
    A Style Is Born is a series where we go down the rabbit hole and uncover the unique histories and origin stories behind your favorite international design styles.

    Japanese floor mattresses are thinner and are usually lifted up and regularly aired. Leaving a western style mattress on the floor without ventilation may increase moisture and mold build up I would have thought

    • @MyFocusVaries
      @MyFocusVaries Месяц назад +7

      It absolutely would. I've seen it. A mattress on the floor without at least a pallet type frame causes mold growth and permanent staining of laminate floors. Unless you lift the mattress every morning to air for the day

    This was a very educational and wonderful episode and Alexandra did a great job hosting. 🙌 I was floored (pun intended) by how little I knew about how Japanese Interior Design had such a global impact. So cool!

    Until the 1950s Indians would sit and eat on the floor. We slept on floors sometimes, esp when we had guests. And that generaion is waaay more flexible than me.

    When I travelled around North Africa and the Middle East, most things were done on the floor, including sleeping eating, tea time and going to the bathroom. Squatting not chairs for thousands of years.
    This style of living is much healthier for the body too

    If your bed is on the floor, the real question is: do you take off your shoes when you come indoors? If your floor has outdoor dirt on it, then the bed on that same floor is an issue. If your floor is kept clean, not a problem.
