  • Doc Harley from the Service Clinic at Low Country Harley-Davidson to help you with the health of your motorcycle! This week he answers a viewer's question about if decel pop (the popping sound from the exhaust some hear when riding) hurts a motor by explaining what it is, that it happens in the exhaust and not the engine, why it happens and what to do if you want to lessen it.

    Okay here’s the quick version: no it doesn’t hurt the motor, it’s normal when upgrading exhaust, the popping is from the unburnt fuel igniting in the hot exhaust. However there are some instances where the popping is a result of a bad tune or vacuum leak etc etc

      well..yes...thats the closest to the correct explanation ive read so far. yes, its unburnt fuel in the exhaust but, the reason is not because of too much fuel..its the opposite..the fuel air ratio is too lean, which results in high exhaust temps then as we deceleration and cut off air, the fuel mixture then becomes incomplete burned as it enters the hot exhaust pipe. thats why we need to richen the fuel air mixture ratio becomes less combustible as it cools the exhaust pipe temps aswell. another thing that causes popping are leaking exhaust donuts

      Actually the answer was in there, but it wasn't directly stated. If you having decel popping between 2 rpms (probably a bad EFI map or if you're running carbs you have a jet that is too big) then you are probably running too rich since the pop occurs when un-burnt fuel mixes with fresh (O2 rich) air in your exhaust and the temp is high enough to ignite it. Try decreasing your main and pilot jets (one at a time then checking it by riding and doing several decels).

    You never did say if it was bad for the engine, so the question still exists. 😫.
    He explains why it happens, and where it happens, but never started a yes or no its not bad. Just because it happens in the exhaust doesn't mean that the fuel igniting in the exhaust won't cause some kind of reverse exhaust pressure that may hurt the valves or something. So what's the full answer Doc??

    • @PotatoeJoe69
      @PotatoeJoe69 2 года назад +1

      No it's not bad for the engine. It's unburnt fuel making it into the exhaust then igniting. Occasionally, a really piss poor tune can cause decel popping; but if that's causes by the tune, you're bike is probably gonna be running like shit all around, so it won't be a mystery.

    Hey. Doc I really enjoy your commentary instructions and insight about Harleys, I was just watching your episode on decel popping, as someone who worked in high performance engine shops when I was younger and we had a Dino. I learned it's always better to put the bike in neutral and use the brakes instead of using the engine and transmission to slow it down whenever possible and the dyno operator said when you decel with the engine it makes it harder on the ring lands of the Pistons and I believe it

    If you clutch in then there cannot be any decel pop as the engine is no longer being uses to decel the bike, so clutching in (as stated) and listening for the range at which the engine is popping is not correct, just decel and tell your tuner the gear and rev range you observe. I like most of your videos Doc as your usually spot on the money with diagnosis and explanation ,but this one not so much with this one, most of the comments are confused viewers maybe some clarification or a remake. • @markgaston3824
    @markgaston3824 3 года назад +1

    Since Doc didn't answer the question I'll take a go at it. Because the decel poping is taking place in the exhaust toward the end or tip end of the exhaust pipe, my answer would be that it depends on how short the exhaust pipes are. As with any motor as long as the combustion of unburned fuel is taking place outside of the exhaust manifold then the only damage that can occur would be to the exhaust pipe it's self, and even then I don't think that the detonation of unburnt fuel in the engine itself on the exhaust side will cause any harm. An example of this would be the 4 cylinder engine that Ford put in the Ford ranger it actually had eight spark plugs for four cylinders, four on the intake side and four on the exhaust side, so you could see with that engine you were having a second detonation of unburnt fuel inside the engine and Ford did this to improve admissions and also give better fuel mileage. This was the engine that was also used in the small Mitsubishi trucks that sold back in the '80s and we all know how dependable those little ranger and Mitsubishi trucks were.

  • @anitabonghit266
    @anitabonghit266 4 года назад +1

    For all you people who don't understand anything, he did answer the question. Decel pop is unburnt fuel in the exhaust igniting. Since the unburnt fuel went through the exhaust ports into the exhaust there is no harm done to the engine. It is actually a slight rich condition,which is way better than being lean. It's not rich enough to wash out the cylinders though. Now with fuel injected vehicles, fuel does not cut completely off when you close the throttle. The ecm let's a little bit of fuel to go through so engine breaking isn't so hard and to control the heat some. With some aftermarket tuners you can turn off fuel when you close the throttle.
    The is also another reason you can get Decel pop and that is from an exhaust leak. A excessive exhaust leak can burn up the exhaust valves because the exhaust is not evacuating far enough from the ports.
    I do take back my first statement and I'm too lazy to go back up to correct it. So the answer would be yes and no depending whatthe cause of the pop is

  • @PotatoeJoe69
    @PotatoeJoe69 2 года назад +3

    Fun fact; wrapping your exhaust with fiberglass wrap or titanium wrap can basically eliminate decel pop. The extra heat in the pipes makes any unburnt fuel vaporize, and the extra heat also causes better scavenging which prevents backflow of fresh air into the exhaust -- when then let's the heat properly evaporate any fuel without popping.
    But of course this has its limitations. If you're running 12" long shotgun pipes, you're gonna have decel pop no matter what you do.

      FACT: A M8 Stage 2. That is pipe air cleaner and CAM upgrade is stronger and less expensive to build them a Twin Cam Stage 4.

    Doc, this is something i have been dealing with this past year, but mine is a little diff. i have a 2018 street glide, with open exhaust and high flow muffs. however MY bike does not decel pop but what i call "shift popping" Only upshifting, and only when you get on it for the first 2 -3 gears. rev up to about 3500-4000 rpms, clutch shift, POP, thats it. wont do it when just normal driving but only from a stop through 3rd gear getting to about 4k. For the life of me I cant tune it out.. i have checked every seal, exhaust leaks, etc. we found an intake leak but HD put in the new aluminum intake, but it still does it.. I am completely stumped on this.. on decel, NOTHING happens.. I am about to put the stock "exhaust pipe on" and leave the aftermarket mufflers on to see if the CAT keeps the popping from occuring.. is this a waste of time to try that?
    THANKS!

      @silberfj 4 года назад +5

      He answers the question at 0:50. "Fresh air can be drawn back into the exhaust system, and the un-burnt fuel that comes out of the motor mixes with a higher temperature in the exhaust system, and detonation happens... as the un-burnt fuel is being burnt." That detonation is happening in the exhaust system, not in the motor.

Most people go too rich, never check the timing, dont check float height, dont set the float height right, never run correct spark plugs, don't learn how plug heat ranges influence engines, and think that reading plugs on air cooled engines is the the same as water cooled engines.

    • @Evirthewarrior

      It sounds like ass, my first bike was used and the popping was one of the reasons I got rid of it, the others were that the meat head that worked on it, messed up the electrical, causing lights to go out, and it the pipes were so hot that it burned anything that touched them, even if it were for a very short amount of time, through the heat shield. IDK why people like it, it makes your bike sound like you have no idea how to set your exhaust up. The dealer took the bike back for as much as I paid for it on trade and I got a Fat Bob, was a great decision.
