    The current turnaround time for a scrub hat is 3 to 4 weeks on Etsy and Amazon. I decided to try and make one myself. I do not have a sewing machine so I had to do it by hand despite the video recommendation. It is doable. The instructions were easy to follow.The pattern was easily printed. I have long thick hair and the cap fits perfectly.

      I am so glad you found this helpful, and that the cap was a good fit. And, yes, hand-sewing it will work, for sure. It will just take more time.

    The music is from the song Bless the Lord oh my soul, somewhat confusing but there's no denying a beautiful melody. Also nice pattern! I'm searching for some cap models for night wear purposes and since I'm a beginner it's still quite hard to grasp what sort of shapes turn into a wearable item.

    • @YLIM7778
      @YLIM7778 2 года назад

      Not confusing at all! Perhaps she is a Christian making scrub caps that can be used as a head covering. Looks like a very humble wedding ring - my hunch is she is a women of God🤔. Funny how we can go into a retail outlet to buy clothes where sexually inappropriate and profane music is being blasted (even with children around) but we don't view it as 'confusing'. Mmm🤔

    • @MrsDFreire
      @MrsDFreire  2 года назад +1

      I am indeed a Christian. I put this video together for a friend that was helping me make scrub caps for hospital workers, and I never could've imagined that so many people would benefit from it. I'm glad to read that some people are considering this style for something other than hospital scrubs. I hope it goes well, and that my instructions are easy to follow. :)

    • @AammaK
      @AammaK 2 года назад

      @@YLIM7778 I didn't mean that it's confusing in itself, but unexpected in the context, like hearing a specific melody of your favorite song in an unexpected place. Or like the national hymn of your country being played as casual background music in a video when the maker doesn't know where it comes from, which has also happened to me :D

    • @MrsDFreire
      @MrsDFreire  2 года назад

      Ah. I see. Well, a little context might help you not be as confused. I put this tutorial together soon after my dad passed away from COVID, and helping hospital workers in this way, while being reminded of God's goodness in the midst of suffering, was a way to cope with the pain of loss. 10,000 years and then forevermore, until I see my dad again.

My question is that your fabric in the video shows white on the backside. Is that because you used a lining? I don't see a lining or interfacing mentioned anywhere or on the pattern. So maybe you only used it for contrast in the video? What do you recommend? Thank you for doing this!

    Good morning. I am finally working on the long hair cap. I made 2 mistakes as a new sewer. One I cut the notches too deep but was able to sew just below the one problem notch and almost kept the 1/4 inch seam allowance. The other mistake and I am not sure what I did was somehow make the cap longer than the side piece so that I had too much material to pin. I got on the internet and found a solution which worked but I would like to figure out what I did so that I won't do it again.

    • @MrsDFreire
      @MrsDFreire  4 года назад

      Hi Judi! About the notches, I did bring that up in my ponytail video, because I realized that if you cut them too deep you would go past the seam allowance. But I’m glad you were able to fix that. As for the extra length of the CAP TOP, when working with this long hair style, I wouldn’t force it to fit into the CAP SIDE. As long as your center front itches for those two pieces are lined up, that’s all that matters. In fact, if you’re pining before you sew, I would pin at center front first and move towards the ends from there. That way you make sure the fronts are aligned. For the standard (no elastic style), you do want to make sure the pieces line up at the end as well, and the pattern pieces should work out that way when you sew them. Hope this helps!

    • @jmsva6914
      @jmsva6914 4 года назад

      The notches did not match up to where they should have. (I will do better on the next one!!) The cap was longer than the sides, but I think I made it work. My finished cap measures 9 - 7/8" when I fold the ban in half and measure from the top crease to the bottom of the cap where the body of the cap meets the ties. My daughter would like buttons added to the caps. Is 7 1/2" from the top crease a good measurement to sew them? I am so glad to see that so many people are making caps. Here in Virginia the ones ordered by medical offices are hard to find or on back order. When available the hospitals are getting what is available and that is how it should be so making the caps is important. Having your patterns and videos is a blessing.

    • @MrsDFreire
      @MrsDFreire  4 года назад

      It’s unbelievable that caps are still hard to come by these days. That’s part of the reason I started selling them on Etsy-to try and help. I usually place the buttons about 7” from center front, right above the headband. So far, I have gotten no complaints about the placement. About the notches, as long as you line up the center fronts, it’s ok if the side notches are off. You basically want to sew the CAP TOP to the CAP SIDE up to where the SIDE ends, and place your elastic in whatever is leftover of the CAP TOP.

    • @jmsva6914
      @jmsva6914 4 года назад

      I can always count on you for a quick response. Thank you. My first cap is done accept for the buttons and I will place them at 7". May I ask what your caps measure out to from the center front to the bottom edge of the cap where the headband ties begin. I am just curious as I have so many to make and want to make sure the measurements are correct. As I said before, my cap measures out to 9 -7/8". Again thank you for your patience and help. Now I am going to attempt the ponytail cap so that my daughter's office can decide which one they want me to make.

    • @MrsDFreire
      @MrsDFreire  4 года назад

      Hi Judi. The ponytail cap does take more fabric. Keep that in mind. The half-yard suggestion I gave you for two caps was for the long hair one. As for my measurement for the finished cap at the headband area, it’s roughly 20” before the ties begin. Not sure if that’s what you were asking.

    @MrsDFreire- Thanks for this pattern. One of my friends is working in a hospital and needs some caps that will fit her VERY long and curly hair! The download did not include the headband/ties, but I'll search through and see if perhaps this just isn't the correct pattern link. My question is- I heard you say in the video that the overall length of the strap should be 42", but I can't tell the width. Is it 1.5"? Thanks so much for your help.

    • @MrsDFreire
      @MrsDFreire  4 года назад

      Hello Lauren. I'm glad you'll be making this for your friend. There should be a PDF for the HEADBAND/TIE in the folder. But, in essence, it's really just a long strip of fabric, measuring 2.5" in height by the whole width of the fabric (my quilting cotton happens to be around 42").

    My daughter has asked me to make masks to go along with your scrub cap pattern and she wants me to make them with elastic ties to attach to the button on the scrub cap. I don't know how to calculate the length of the rolled 1/8' elastic to stretch from the mask to the button on the scrub cap. Can you tell me if there is a set length i.e 7" or a way to figure out what length I should use. By the way, I gave them a choice between the long hair cap and the ponytail cap and there was a tie between the two choices. The two doctors of course chose your regular scrub cap.

    • @MrsDFreire
      @MrsDFreire  4 года назад

      Hi Judi. Glad to hear you’re making progress. As for the length of the elastic, you shouldn’t have to adjust the length to accommodate the buttons. If you placed the buttons near the ears, then the mask will go over the buttons pretty much as it would have over the ears. Also, the basic elastic length would depend on the mask style you’re using. There’s so many options out there, so I wouldn’t know how to advise you on that one. :(

      @MrsDFreire  4 года назад

      Hi Dawn! Did you use a quilter’s quarter? If so, watch my video on how to cut the cap out of that. There you will see that you need to cut your HEADBAND/TIE basically twice, since your quarter is only 21” wide, or so. Then you would join the pieces together to end up with a total length of 41”-42”. Let me know if this doesn’t make sense.

      That is an excellent question. The update is an improvement in the pattern. I enlarged the CAP SIDE’s dimensions slightly, and I also adjusted the CAP TOP’s measurements to come out to be exactly 8”x12”. However, both patterns will work out just fine to produce similar caps. Another modification I made was that I eliminated the extra fabric on the CAP SIDE “ends” since I realized after te fact that you don’t really need to finish the edges by folding the fabric twice. A simple overlock or zig-zag stitch is sufficient. I think that covers everything. Hopefully this all makes sense.

    Hi, thank you for this pattern! If I use 2 pieces to make the band, there’s a seam right smack in the middle of the forehead then right? Am I doing something wrong? Is there any way to avoid the seam in the middle if I don’t have a 41” piece?

    • @MrsDFreire
      @MrsDFreire  3 года назад

      Hi Grace!
      Yes. There's a way to avoid that. If you see my pattern pieces, I actually have you cut 3, not 2 strips: 2 short ones (11" each) and one twice as long (22"). And you join the two shorter strips on either end of the longer one, leaving you with seams on the sides, not center front. Hopefully this makes sense. Watch the video again, see if by so doing this becomes clearer.

    • @MrsDFreire
      @MrsDFreire  4 года назад

      Hello Terry! Yes. I updated the pattern pieces after the video. So, they’re all 1/4” wide, except for the casing area on the CAP TOP. That needs to be slightly wider than 1/4”, so you can fit the elastic in there. But, if you’re more comfortable sewing with a larger seam allowance, just modify the pattern pieces accordingly. :) Let me know if you have any other questions.

    This was easy but very confusing when reading the correction.for the center/ ties. I cut it based on your pattern an it was only 20 inches long but in your explanation you contradict yourself and you say 21 inches but at the end you say 41.
    It should be 41. Correct. I already cut my fabric and 21 is toooo short

    • @MrsDFreire
      @MrsDFreire  4 года назад

      Hi Luz Carmen! I’m sorry my explanations confused you. Here’s the jist of it: if you are using a quilter’s quarter, which where I live is 18”Hx21”W, then you will have to cut TWO strips, both 21” wide, and attach them together to make one long strip that measures about 41” long (after you subtract what you need for the seam allowance when joining the strips). If, however, you are using fabric that is 41”-43”, then you can skip this “piecing” step and just cut one long strip that measures the whole width of your fabric. In my case, that is usually, again, between 41”-43” wide. Hopefully this clarified things a bit for you.

      I’m really glad it worked out for you. By the way, some people ave commented that the CAP TOP is way bigger than the CAP SIDE piece. That’s actually how it’s supposed to be. • @MrsDFreire
      @MrsDFreire  4 года назад +1

      Yes. I actually updated the pattern, after I had made the video, because I realized that it’s actually unnecessary to double-fold the CAP SIDE edge for a clean finish (that’s why that little triangle was there. Since that section of the pattern piece will be folded into itself to create the back pleat, all you really need to do is finish it with either a zig-zag or overlock stitch. So I cut off that 1/2” altogether, and angled that edge, which will result in a smoother pleat. I went ahead and annotated this change on the pattern piece itself. My apologies for the confusion. I wish RUclips had a way of allowing us to edit videos after we’ve posted them :).
