On today's episode of Gaming Off The Grid, we go back and look at ALL 29 PlayStation 2 launch titles and we play a little game called Stash or Trash? We talk about each game and then decide if it's worth keeping in the collection or throwing in the trash cause it's a dumpster fire.

PS2 had a decent launch. Tekken tag tournament is amazing! I feel 2001 was the REAL year for the PS2
For sure. '01 and '02 were insane for the PS2. So many epic games
Tekken Tag Tournament was the very first game I ever saw being played on a PS2. My cousins got the system during Christmas in 2000, I spent New Years with them and I got to see the PS2 in person for the first time after seeing it all year in magazines and TV. I remembered being amazed at the graphics.
I didn't have this moment with Tekken Tag, but Madden 2001. You are spot on about being amazed by the graphics. It was truly mind blowing at the time. Thanks for watching. Cheers!

I never had a PS2 at the time it came out (opted for GameCube) so it was nice to have a look at its launch titles 👍🏻
Tons of variety. Not a ton of dingers but there was something for everyone. Very different from the current launch. Cheers!
I had a GameCube too and I wanted a PlayStation 2 so bad instead...I used to see so many cool racing games like Gran Turismo and all the NASCAR games and wished I had a PlayStation 2 instead...I was a big race fan and loved racing games.
I really appreciate the effort you guys put in to these videos...especially the longer ones like this. I spend anywhere from 10 - 20 hours on my videos that top out at 90 seconds, including intro and outro. I can only imagine the amount of time spent on writing, filming and editing these lengthy videos. Keep on doing what you guys do, and keep on gaming, gamer dudes!

Thanks man! Countless hours for sure. We pretty much each have 2 full time jobs at this point lol. As far as the band goes, you should be able to find us on Spotify and most other online streaming services. We also have some stuff on our You Tube page. The 2 launch titles I purchased together w/the PS2 on launch day are Tekken Tag Tournament, and DOA 2: Hardcore. Both were awesome!

We used to play Fantavision using a “borrowed” projector from one of friend’s jobs to play this on a wall. A great game to play but more fun to watch IMO. Early college was playing on my gf’s modded PS1, my roommate played football on his Dreamcast and PS2 was the new kid on the block as I neared graduation.
Kessen is an amazing game based on history , must have put over 100 hrs into it , Koei is my favorite publisher such a shame it ended in the trash. Wish you guys enjoyed strategy titles. Keep up the great work Fella's

Great episode. I have been thinking about launch titles throughout gaming and thinking about an episode, but it looks like I'll be skipping the PS2 haha. Nice work guys. I really loved Timesplitters and Timken Tag tournament. I can't believe how many games were out on launch compared to the turds we're getting with the PS5 and Xbox Series X
It is definitely a stark contrast from today's landscape. As much as I kinda want one of the new consoles it's really hard to make the jump at this point.

I don't know...The 1st time I saw Mario 64 in action at Target my balls were completely blown off...I couldn't believe how fantastic the game looked; and then I played it and I was immediately sold on the idea that Mario could make it in the 3D world. I have never experienced that pure feeling of awe since Mario 64.

The first I saw madden on a PS2 was at my parents friends super bowl party! I still don’t think any game has blown my mind as much as far as a generational graphical leap!
I do like how almost all of these titles are brand new PS2 games. Now most console launches the games are usually, 'This old game remastered!' Rather than new stuff
Very true. A stark contrast from today's landscape. Such a meh launch for this generation.
Midnight Club & Smuggler's Run were both Rockstar developed games. If you used the same memory card for both games, you could unlock 2 vehicles from each game to use on the other game.

I got my launch PS2 December 2000 and all I had to play on it was SSX, Final Fantasy IX and the DVD of American Beauty but goddamn, I loved that system.
If I could go back I would have held off on it and waited for fall 2001 to get one because once Devil May Cry, GTA 3, MGS2, SSX Tricky and Final Fantasy X came out it actually FELT like a console launch.

Great video, if you liked Silent Scope there is a compilation with the three first Silent Scope games for the OG Xbox that is compatible with lightguns and there is even a official sniper rifle lightgun for them if you can track it down.

As you know I bought the PS2 on launch day and I picked up, Unreal Tournament, Orphen, Dynasty Warriors 2, Silent Scope, Smugglers Run, TimeSplitters, and X-Squad. FYI there is a sniper rifle light gun for at least the OG Xbox for the Silent Scope series. It came bundled with all 3 silent scope games, been looking out for it for years now.
Ya XBox got the gun. PS2 owners got the shaft unfortunately. The game is still fun as hell but would have been better with the gun for sure. Cheers to the good ol' PS2!

I think I'd agree with your selections in this vid. On a side note as far as Silent Scope goes they actually made the sniper rifle for the original Xbox version of the game. Might be something for you guys to look into in the future. Cheers fellas!

I waited in line on a whim at Best Buy on Launch Day (10/26/2000) & got #95/96 PS2s the store had. I also got TimeSplitters, X-Squad, a mem card, & extra controller

glad you liked Armored Core 2. Those games were my jam back in the day.
Armored Core 2 is really cool, and most people don't know that FromSoftware was actually the developer! AgeTec were the publishers and did a lot of localization for Japanese games like Raw Danger and KUON. But FromSoft are the guys who did Dark Souls which is neat. Same thing with Eternal Ring! (Not really sure why FromSoft made so many PS2 launch titles but I won't complain!)

Oh man, DW2 takes me back--definitely the one that got me into that series and the spin-offs for life.
Gotta drop a "meh" on Eternal Ring and Evergrace--which is a shame because I jumped onto the PS1 for RPGs and looked forward to some great offerings on PS2--which it eventually got, but yeah, definitely not day one.
I worked with some guys who bought a PS2 literally for the Madden game--they loved how it looked at the time.
Orphen was such a ride the line game...so much potential. I felt the same with The Bouncer actually.
Tekken Tag was pretty great at the time--it was a fairly new mechanic for fighters back then. Silent Scope was fine but definitely didn't live up to the arcade experience.
Summoner--ah, like a PS2 rushed effort for Diablo...
These games were definitely all over the board. Some dingers and some that were ya......not so much. But it was cool to see that many launch titles. Maybe the modern era could take some notes :)

Eternal ring and Kings Field IV on ps2 are really fun, but it all depends on how you feel about that type of game. And for midnight club I only played 3 dub edition, and playing it recently it is still fun but shows it's age tbh :(

Thats funny, i just picked up Timesplitters today after giving some thoughts to what ps2 launch games i was missing in my collection. Funny story, about 10 months after launch my girlfriend sent my console away to be modded and i thought someone stole my ps2. I was about to call the police and she had to spoil the surprise to my relief. AS IF I WAS GOING TO NOT NOTICE IT WAS GONE!!!!!

I got a PS2 at launch along with SSX. At the time, I thought SSX was pretty amazing. They really need to make a new SSX w/split screen multiplayer.
Hell ya they do. We really miss the EA Big games. It was a really cool time in gaming. The landscape is rather cookie cutter these days. Cheers to the good ol' PS2!

You guys have never heard of the green rifle for silent scope? It's not that good of a light gun but it exists. I'm pretty sure there's a picture of it on the back of the dvd case or at least on the Xbox version.

Ok, so there are a few things I wanted to say about this video, so I took notes while watching (#nerdlife lol)....First off, @Wes you would be a GREAT game show host lol 🍻❤. Now, getting down to the real stuff; NHL 2001 was good, but I can understand why you guys trashed it (I wouldn't though, because I'm a HUGE hockey fan); next: Swing Away Golf; totally agree with you guys that it sucks, but I have a special place in my heart for it because it was one of the few games I sucked the least at against my brothers lol..Lastly, ESPN Track and Field is super fun lol. That is all 😊.

Armored Core 2: I'm a massive AC fan. AC2 was spectacular when it came out, but quite a bit different than the 3 ps1 games. Was technically very unbalanced compared to the rest of the followup ps2 games (i.e the various parts you could put on your mech) but so much fun. I realized just last week I was missing AC2 for some reason, picked it up for a few bucks. Maybe I have 2 copies now but I can't find my original.
Dead or Alive 2: spent a lot of time with this one when it was new, big improvement over the DC version but it is a shadow of the Xbox remaster, Ultimate.
Dynasty Warriors 2: My first exposure to the franchise was the first DW3 (then the DW3 expansions) and damn was this game rough to go backwards to. Probably'd have a higher opinion if it was my first exposure to the franchise. Later games using the formula are cool.
Evergrace: cheap, less known arpg title. Severely unpolished and could have done better, not horrible though.
Kessen: pain in the ass title, and I was a huge rts game fan at the time.
Midnight Club: Can't remember the original title, but I still have Dub Edition for Xbox. Holy hell it hasn't aged well. Really liked them at the time.
Ridge Racer 5: Not my favorite racing franchise, definitely not a "sim" racer but not really fully arcade like above. They did a decent job.
Tekken Tag: Same as above, not my fave fighting franchise but spent a lot of time with games in this series. TTT was pretty nice overall.
SSX: Revolutionized snowboarding games... were there many out other than 1080 on N64 at the time?
And that's all I've got on the original launch titles.

Seems like ps2 had a better launch line up than the ps4 and ps5. I remember back in high school when the ps2 came out I felt the launch lineup was underwhelming. If only I knew the future. 😆

it may not be the launch lineup but that first year of the ps2 espically the holiday 2001 is a year in gaming that never will be replicated. Gta 3, Mgs2, final fantasy 10, jak 1, gran turismo 3, silent hill 2, dmc and more all exclusive for the ps2, a year like that will never happen. Now were lucky if we get 2 or 3 amazing games that release throughout the whole year.
'01 was epic for sure. The fall time from of '02 was nuts as well. It was such a cool time to be a gamer. Cheers to that!

Lots of titles. Can you image if they launched the PS2 the way they are launching the PS5/SeriesX. “We don’t actually have any PS2 games for you, but you can play these PS1 games in higher res.

Dynasty warriors 3 , 4 and 5 have much better gameplay than 2 it’s more perfected I also like samurai warriors 1 and 2 and ps2 also tekken tag is my fav launch title playing arcade co op with my brother never gets old
