    This episode was masterfully conceived.
New viewers saw it from Rose's point of view, learning as she learns what a Dalek is and why to be afraid of it.
Old viewers of the earlier era saw it from the Doctor's point of view, already terrified of what the Dalek is going to do and agonizing about how the humans don't listen to the Doctor.

I'm always intrigued to learn/see how new viewers see this, coming to the story cold, vs those who know what a Dalek is. Never mind the Autons in episode one; the Slitheen arm (as Britany says, "Oh, she recognises it now...", the Cyberman's helmet...*this* episode was where the lines crossed for fans of New and Classic Who, crossed, entwined and made the whole.

Yeah, I imagine I might feel differently about the episode (and maybe wouldn't have been as empathetic toward the Dalek) if I had seen Classic Who first. But, I like this blending of the two and I like that the journey as a new viewer is mirrored in Rose's journey.

Don't worry about not reacting enough, your face said it all. I felt the same way as you did when I first watched this, so many wonderful Nine/Rose moments, and the tragedy of the Dalek's story and its relationship to the Doctor is just devastating. There was a lot riding on this story as the Daleks are Doctor Who's oldest villains (literally appearing in the second ever story of the show), and had gotten a reputation over the years by non-fans as jokes. They can't climb stairs! They've got a plunger for an arm! This episode does an amazing job at combating all of those criticisms without feeling too forced or on the nose, while still telling an excellent story. Great reaction!

      @BritanyBinges  2 года назад +16

Thank you! I'm so glad the reaction was still enjoyable... even though I was to stunned to speak most of the time. lol
In the full reaction, I actually did make a comment about how it had a design flaw unless it could just roll over a pile of bodies. lol The plunger thing did take me out of the moment a bit as well, but it's nice knowing it was something from the original that they didn't feel compelled to update just for the sake of making it more modern.

As others have said, the Daleks first appeared in the second ever story back in 1963 and have been a constant feature of the show ever since. But we can’t overstate how huge an impact they’ve had on the series. They were so incredibly popular when they first appeared that the term “Dalekmania” was coined. And that literally saved the show. The show had been effectively cancelled and the head of Drama, Sydney Newman who was the person most responsible for creating the show, was angry at the inclusion of what he called “bug-eyed monsters”. The then-producer Verity Lambert (the first female producer at the BBC, in her first producing job) fought for the story (being that it’s an obvious Nazi allegory less than 20 years after the end of WWII) but, even so, the low ratings meant that production was to finish after the 2-episode third story, leaving 13 episodes in total.
But then the story actually started airing and was insanely popular, leading the BBC to demand that the show be un-cancelled and production to carry on, and Sydney Newman himself to tell Verity Lambert “what the hell do I know?” and promise that he’d stay completely out of it from that point on.
So not only are the Daleks loved for being the Daleks, not only are they the Doctor’s biggest and oldest enemies, but they’re also 100% responsible for there ever being more than 13 episodes of Doctor Who.

I think why most people said that this episode is sort of a "if you don't like it, you won't like it afterwards" is because while DW is a comedy sci-fi, most people, including myself, love and remember the show for moments and episodes like this one. Say hello to the Daleks, the very first alien threat encountered in Doctor Who! They first appeared in the second story of the show back in 1963, and were an instant hit - so popular they returned almost every season and became the Doctor’s greatest enemy. The design, that Art Deco salt shaker look, and the harsh mechanical voice, has remained largely the same ever since. Incidentally, the original design plans for them had a mechanical claw, but the BBC art department didn’t have the budget to build them in time so they just stuck a plunger on the arm instead, and it’s stayed with them. The Daleks truly are British cultural icons, and like the Tardis have embedded themselves into the cultural consciousness in the same way that elements of Star Trek have in the US.
Eccleston’s performance in this is outstanding. You really feel his terror at being locked in with the Dalek, and then his manic relief and anger when he realizes it’s gun is broken. You truly get a sense of the history between him and the Daleks in that one scene.

    • @BritanyBinges

Much like how the Daleks are responsible for saving this show in the 60s, this episode may be the most important in regards to the character of the Doctor post Time-War. The first five episodes we saw glimpses of the trauma and anguish the Doctor has felt being the last of his people but it's this one where we see just how much the last great Time War has affected the Doctor to his very core. The mere sight of his oldest enemy surviving the war that wiped their races out brings genuine fear into the Doctor (with him begging for the doors to be open so he can escape). That fear that eventually is shown to be of pure anger and hatred by telling the last Dalek in the universe to commit suicide so that the Daleks can be extinct. It's a characteristic of the Doctor that is almost never shown across the show's history but it emphasizes how this terrible war was able to break a good man like him. Behind all this charm and good nature is a soul who has lived through the worst atrocities and is now trying to figure out if he can find hope again in this crazy universe, something that feels extremely relatable today.

While Dalek is very much a high-point, the BBC initially wanted the Daleks in episode one. Wisely, Russell T Davies pointed out that holding them back for the middle of the first series will potentially bring another opening night, so to speak. I don't think it worked like that, but it's still a great tent-pole episode, as they call it.
Now, a quick word about Bruno Langley, who plays Adam in this. Unfortunately, he was charged with sexual assault a few years ago, although the circumstances were charged, shall we say. Just to be clear, I'm not excusing or justifying his behaviour, but I will attempt to contextualise it. During a night out, Langley was being harassed and teased by two women for being gay, which he isn't. The reason for this teasing was that the character he played in UK soap opera Coronation Street was gay. Out of drunken frustration, he grabbed the two women inappropriately and said something along the lines of "I'll show you I'm not gay", or suchlike. Now, as I say, none of this excuses his actions and he was sacked from Coronation Street - in fact, the role was recast - and he has since retired from acting. Personally, I don't believe he's a serial offender, but he pleaded guilty and was placed on a register for five or ten years, something like that.
I haven't mentioned this to anger anyone, merely to couch any potential angrier comments about him. Saying that, I hope it doesn't spoil your enjoyment of the character too much. Apologies if I've overstepped the mark in sharing this information with you.

    • @BritanyBinges
      @BritanyBinges  2 года назад +7

That was definitely a good call I think on Russell T. Davies' part because even if there were Classic Who fans who didn't like the revival and gave up after some of the first few episodes, I bet they would've come back once they learned the Daleks were returning in episode 6.
That's really disappointing to hear about Bruno. I really, really liked Adam in this episode but, honestly, the character went way down in my book in episode 7. I don't know if that will be his last episode (and I don't want to know lol), but he didn't turn out to be what I expected when he joined them at the end of 6.

    A year late, but...
"Dalek" was an important episode not as a plot gamechanger, but as the first episode since the show returned in 2005 to bring in a "classic monster." So, it was the first episode to properly acknowledge the lore. It also revealed the Doctor's PTSD from the Time War that happened between the show's "off-air" period more fully, so it's darker in tone than the previous episodes.
The episode also very nearly didn't happen. The Daleks were a creation of classic Who scriptwriter, Terry Nation, and his estate held the rights for it. Russell T. Davies (showrunner) and Robert Shearman (scriptwriter) weren't 100% certain that they would be granted the rights from the estate to use the Daleks, so they had to come up with an alternate script with a different alien, the design of which would have implications for Series 3 (where I've seen you finally reached now with the penultimate episode).

This is perhaps a bigger episode in Britain than it is for total newcomers because even when the show was off air the Daleks were the iconic Dr Who monster and everyone in Britain knew about them whether they had watched the show or not. Apart from the living plastic Autons in episode 1 this is the first time in the series a villain from classic Who returns and it makes for a great story.

Welcome to the introduction of the Daleks well a Dalek in this era of Doctor Who. The Doctor's most deadliest and most feared enemies and the most iconic monsters in Who and Sci fi history as well as their iconic line "Exterminate!" and have been around since the very beginning in 1963 as it was The Daleks that made Doctor Who a huge success and it's real life creator Terry Nation based them on Nazis which at that time World War II was still fresh in everyone's minds this is their first TV come back in 17 years. At the beginning of this episode where The Doctor sees a robot head at the museum was a Cyberman who are also another iconic enemy of The Doctor's.

As for "not reacting enough", reacting isn't you talking, it's seeing your expressions and how you "react" to the episode. You're doing fine. Season 1 is a bit of a slow burn, it's re-introducing a series that's been out of circulation for a while, and keeping as many old elements as possible while trying to update them at the same time. THis ep likely hits harder with long time viewers than new viewers, so i understand it not living up to what people built it up to be. But the Daleks were always evil bastards, Space Nazis if you will. And as you got an inkling of from this, they and the Doctor's people wiped each other out, and the Doctor finished it. Something he never wanted to do, and still has trouble living with. He was always an oddity among his people, and now he finds himself the last of them, scarred from the experience, and traumatised. Trying to figure out how he can move on, and where he fits in. And then he finds yet one more reminder/remainder of what took his people from him, and turned him from the fun-loving character he was, to this scarred veteran of a horrific war. This version is the result of the "good man" being forced to do horrible things. And despite his desires, surviving them, and being all that remains

    Great reaction.
I do think this is a good episode but I think a lot of its impact for many viewers is knowing the significance of the Daleks from Classic Who, where they were a major foe to the Doctor. I do think this episode does a good job of hinting at that and Christopher Ecclestone's initial reaction to the Dalek is superb at letting you know just how scary they are supposed to be. I think the other thing it does really well is demonstrate that the Doctor is not a straightforwardly "good" character. He's had to make difficult moral choices and sometimes he needs someone like Rose to pull him back from making the wrong ones.

They are the 2nd ever story of Doctor Who, being the Doctors old nemesis ever since his first incarnation. And, this is why i wanted to wait before recommending any Classic Who stories, i mean i said at the end of Series 1, However i wanted to say this here cause, the story im about to say, is THE Doctor Who Story. Most reactors complain they can't connect with the Doctor until episode 6. You had no problem with that and so i think the impact was less for you. The emotions, the acting, the feel of the episode, and the info we are given are what make this episode a good test for if you will like the show. It really shows you there is so much more of the Doctor below the surface that we are unaware of. As far as the Daleks themselves go, this episode made sure to correct some of the complaints of the old Daleks. In Classic Who the Daleks had to turn all the way around to deal with threats behind them. Also, they didn't do stairs. As far as the Dalek showing too much emotion (which is a complaint), I don't believe it was actually feeling emotions until Rose touched it and the genetic transfer happened. Prior to that, I believe it was mimicking human emotion in order to manipulate her into helping it. Once it started feeling the emotions it couldn't handle it. Finally, (speaking only of my reaction to the episode the first time i watched it) the words "I made it happen!" hit me really hard. I took it the way you did. You are the first reactor I've seen to actually pick that up. They only catch the bit about him killing the Daleks and nothing more. Great reaction per usual! As soon as I am able, I will be joining your Patreon. When I find a reactor I really like I do that to support them. I'm hoping I can do that really soon.

That makes complete sense that this would be a bigger episode for me personally if I hadn't already been so invested in these characters. Good point.
I did actually notice in this episode that when the Doctor walked behind the Dalek, the "head"/camera didn't do a full 360 to keep the Doctor in view and that seemed like a design flaw/weak spot. But, that whole scene was so intense that I forgot to mention anything about it. I did mention in the full reaction about not being able to get over a pile of bodies. lol
I think that's a really good point about the Dalek pretending to show emotion (at first) to manipulate Rose. It makes complete sense to me. (I say not knowing anything more about the Daleks than this one episode. lol)
Yeah, learning he was responsible for basically the extinction of the Daleks (and therefore the Time Lords) was one of the biggest revelations in the episode for me (actually, probably even the entire show so far).
I'll be glad to have you over on Patreon whenever the time is right for you. :)

In light of our extensive conversation last week about which Classic stories are "safe to watch" without spoiling future events of the post-2005 series, now that you've seen this one, that opens up 1963/64's "The Daleks," 1965's "The Chase," and 1972's "Day of the Daleks ," out of the surviving stories readily available on the US version of Britbox. People shouldn't have been building this episode up for you, that's a bit unfair. Nothing major happened and as episodes go it's maybe only above average. That said, I think it's more that this is where the show really starts to take off. The cheese of the farting aliens has gone, the budget is slowly starting to improve, the Doctor really started to show his raw emotion and we're introduced to one of the classic enemies from the show's history.
The daleks terrified a generation back in the original series, I think most people are just hyped to see them back in this episode. They may look innocuous, but they are pretty much indestructible and will happily kill everything in their path.
Edit: tears again. By the end of Doctor Who I wonder if climate change will cease to exist and people blame you for the rising sea levels lol.

@@BritanyBinges adam is a good example of what happens when you get on the wrong side of the 9th doctor, there's an episode coming that is going to demonstrate this even more clearly, the 9th doctor can be laidback and outgoing, but he's also dealing with a lot of trauma so when his companions don't follow the rules or behave recklessly a much darker side of him surfaces, i can't wait for you to see that episode, you will cry, i'm sorry in advance.

I'm not sure what that is, but I do know that's what Van Statten called it so, I'm assuming it has to do with this episode.

@@BritanyBinges someone on RUclips (Joe Vevers) has edited the episode, switching out the dalek's lines for his own and adding some comentry on the subtitles. Personally I think it is very funny.
