Christopher Eccleston excels in all his episodes but really shines in this one. Really hits hard when the Dalek tells the Doctor he would make a good Dalek. One of the best scenes ever.
Eccleston excels…. A fine and true alliteration, sadly however I remember some fans in my circle at the time being put off by of all things his looks. Because he didn’t have the crazy hair that they liked the Doctor to have….
@@joeb918That's too bad. I like funky hairdos and quirky outfits as much as the next person, but that's such a silly reason to discount such a brilliant performance. Eccleston is probably my favorite after Capaldi, and while the latter did grow beautifully into a wilder hairdo by the end, both were notable for having very understated costuming, and at no point did I ever question their identity as The Doctor. They both, in their own way, managed to embody the character for me from the jump. I don't think there's ever been a terrible casting choice for the role thus far (I like the more controversial ones like Colin Baker, Peter Davidson, and Whittaker is honestly in my top five), but very few have managed to entirely bypass the awkward adjustment period for me like those two. Maybe I just like the Doctor to be a bit on the older side, the way some people like them to have messy hair or ... a certain hormonal arrangement? I don't know. This is kinda a silly, fun space superhero show, but I feel like being able to portray the titular role well is one of the biggest acting challenges out there.
@jlinkous05 Well, he's said in interviews since that he doubted himself at the time, and he wasn't sure he was doing the role justice. But he absolutely was! But it doesn't appear that he hated the role. It was the behind the scenes stuff with the producers that was difficult for him.
I was wrong apparently! There's no way I doubted his commitment, he did the role justice. He had a lot of malice towards the project in initial interviews, like by the end of it he didn't even want to be there. Based on what y'all are saying, it wasn't the role, it was everything else. Thanks for learnin' me something new!
I love the way in your summed up the doctors character. there is a quote from one of doctor whos writings that sums him up perfectly "Heroes tell us who we want to be but when they made this particular hero they didn’t give him a gun, they gave him a screwdriver to fix things. They didn’t give him a tank or a warship or an X-Wing, they gave him a call box from which you can call for help and they didn’t give him a superpower or a heat-ray, they gave him an extra heart. And that’s extraordinary. There will never come a time when we don’t need a hero like the doctor.” ― Steven Moffat
Unfortunately one of the worst writers, but at least it’s a nice quote & really sums up what the Dr is about. Series takes such a dive when Steven “r/MenWritingWomen” Moffat takes over.
So glad you enjoyed it! (I wrote the episode, nearly two decades ago - it makes me so happy it still stands up for a first time viewer!) Hope you enjoy your journey through the series - there are some really amazing stories coming up...
You must have a hard time convincing people of your identity in forums such as these. :D But thank you for the episode, assuming you are who you claim to be (please forgive my skepticism), I still remember the feelings of loss at the end, thinking it was going to be the last we saw of the Daleks. Little did I know at the time... :P A damn near perfect episode that gave a lot of detail in New Who, informing even the older fans such as myself who still remember first time viewings of Jon Pertwee.
Oh my goodness, you did? Look, I'm a trustworthy kinda gal, so perhaps some may say this could be my downfall but I'm very pleased to meet you, Rob! A beautifully written episode indeed with a stellar performance by The Doctor. As a first time viewer who knows nothing about the Dalek, I had no problems following along and learning about them via this episode. Thank you so much, Rob! It's an honour to have you here 😸💜
That first scene with the Doctor and the Dalek was the first scene Chris filmed after their break from filming where he’d visited his dad with dementia at a time where it was particularly bad. So all that pain and anger Chris shows in that scene is him projecting his real pain and anger onto the Dalek
The Daleks illustrate a common problem with science fiction bad guys. Is extremely difficult to portray them as being a threat but also having them lose every time they appear. This episode made the Dalek extremely frightening, and they didn't defeat it. It defeated itself.
For an old school Doctor Who fan like myself, this was an insanely powerful episode. Not only was Eccelston's performance fantastic (😉) but it was essentially the first time we'd see a new Dalek story on TV in almost twenty years! The Daleks (and, to a slightly lesser extent, the Cybermen) have been the most iconic villains in the Doctor Who saga since the '60s! It was absolutely brilliant to see them back on screen again!
10:08 - and thanks to the fire system the Dalek only needed 3 shots to do so. The Dalek is not just showing it is dangerous, but also intelligent enough to use local materials to kill more efficiently.
Eccelston at his finest. You see fear and rage coming from this Doctor, PTSD from the Time War. And you also see Rose shine as she continuous to adapt to this new life style. A great episode indeed. Thanks for posting and take care.
Back when they made the first season of the new show it was still unclear if this was a reboot or just a continuation of the old series. The events of this episode pointed to the fact that it was a continuation but the reason why the doctor had been missing for years was because the Time War with the Daleks.
Christopher Eccleston is out of this world in this episode, a brilliant actor who genuinely makes you believe he’s lost everything at the hands of the Daleks.
As an old school Whovian (Tom Baker, Number Four) you have no idea of the impact and chill up the spine those first words from the Dalek (DOC-TOR…) create, the Daleks are an iconic and immortal foe…
"Doc... torrr..." "The Doctor..." Classic moment, in a great episode, and for long-time fans, a great reintroduction to a classic villain. I'm just about old enough to have seen some classic Doctor Who when I was little, and my parents had watched the show when they were kids, so I grew up familiar with the Doctor, the TARDIS, and the Daleks. But at the same time, those of us who knew the show before had no knowledge of the Time War: that story wasn't part of the old show, it was something that had happened between the old show ending and the new show beginning. What had happened to the Doctor, to the Time Lords, to the Daleks... that was a mystery to us too.
I think this was the episode where I truly embraced the revival of Doctor Who. It had been decades since I had watched the original show, and the depth and heart that was in this episode made me question why I had ever forgotten about it.
The Daleks are very iconic, and a key part in the show. They featured in its second ever story, saved it from cancellation, and made it a cultural icon. This episode does a remarkable job. Classic fans see the dalek from the doctor's perspective, knowing the danger it poses, fearing it. New fans see it from roses perspective, slowly learning about it throughout the episode. It explores a side of the daleks not really touched on before, and it gives yet more information on the time war. It also works to address a lot of the stereotypes around the daleks that made them less intimidating and something of a joke through the 80s and 90s. I love the part where it shows that it takes the energy from all of the western united states to power a single unit, it really demonstrates just how incomprehensibly powerful they are. Their power, and their intelligence, is on full display here, and the horror of it is excellent. A single unit killing hundreds of people, exactly as it should be. It's a great way to make new viewers understand the threat of the daleks, to instil a sense of fear towards them forever. Even now, after a bad streak for daleks, I still think of the Metaltron every time one appears. Arguably the best dalek episode of all time. This isn't even mentioning what it does for the doctor's character and arc, which is vital, and fantastic. The time war arc is integral to the next 10 series, and this is your first good, solid look at it. The doctor's guilt and regret drives him, and we see it more here than any prior episode. A key component of the doctor's arc, the first big story that contributes to it. This episode is the first truly amazing episode of the revival, and whilst next time is a little weak, this marks a turning point for series 1, beyond wich the tone and quality dramatically change (for the better).
So very glad you got to this episode! Christopher Eccleston is truly amazing at portraying survivor’s guilt, & his scenes opposite the Dalek were everything that any old school fan would want. Gives such a better understanding as to why the Doctor took Rose to the end of the Earth for her first trip - the subconscious need to have this new person he bonded with understand, on a very small level, what he dealt with. Wonderful reaction to the Doctor’s oldest foe! 💜💜➕🟦
I adored Christopher in this episode. He is an incredible actor! He can have us laughing one moment and torn up in the next. I really need to check out more of his work as I NEED more 🥰 Thank you so much for your kind words!!
The hate, the anger, the despise really comes through. Eccelston did a fantastic job. This and 11's reaction later on really show you the power of Daleks and the emotions The Doctor hides.
I don't think a single doctor who reactor has ever jumped up the list of my favourites so quick. Yet another great reaction, can't wait till the next one 😊
Same here. I watch a fair number of reactors for various things but it's rare to find one that is enough of a pleasant surprise to win my subscription!
"You're gonna get rusty!" Such a funny line in an otherwise serious episode! Loved this episode so much. I've forgotten how good some of the season 1 episodes were until watching your reactions. This episode and a few others to come in season 1 are some of the highlights of the early seasons. Hope you're enjoying seeing them for the first time as muc has I'm enjoying reliving these episodes through your reactions.
The best thing about this review is that you had no idea about what a Dalek was or how it behaved. Makes it such a great watch to see someone react to a Dalek for the first time. Reminds me of Daughter child's first Dalek episode and how she totally ignored the fact that it's still the same design as it was in the 60's and just got into what a murderous little shite it was. Great Nu Who episode, Chris Eccleston is still my favorite of all of the new doctors.
So glad you enjoyed this episode! The Daleks go back to the very beginning of Doctor Who (1963!) and are the most iconic monsters in the series. Eccleston's performance is spectacular, you can feel the anger, the fear, and the guilt of the Doctor in that first scene with the Dalek. Thanks for your great reactions!
Love your reaction as always Jules! welcome to your first meeting with a Dalek, the most loathed and feared race in the universe and time.the part of this episode that was always my favorite is that the Doctor, who is the most compassionate being in the universe, became a rage filled monster only interested in his enemies death, while the Dalek, a remorseless killing machine, was becoming compassionate, and unsure of it's purpose, effectively trading places. more info on the time war and Daleks is coming, can't wait to watch you find out!
Just wanted to say I’m really liking how you’ve been engaging with this show! A lot of doctor who reaction videos don’t feel enough for the characters and the situations, or they won’t discuss their thoughts about it or really think about it enough to GET it. But these videos you’ve been making are some of the good ones. I’m really looking forward to your reactions to a lot of the later stuff!
This episode knocked my socks off in 2005, I was 8 at the time and was in awe at how they managed to make a giant pepper pot with a plunger and whisk so very menacing. Murray Gold's score definitely helped in that department, but given that the Daleks were an instant hit with the masses from their introduction in the very second episode of Doctor Who all the way back in 1963, I guess it must have always been this way! We also get another look at the Doctor's inner dark side, and a bit more elaboration on the war and the terrible terrible things he's both done and been through. Also, two more things: First, tuck that robot looking head with the tubes/handles you saw at the beginning (the one the doctor called an old enemy) away in the back of your mind somewhere. Not for any reason, it just looks cool. Second, I won't provide any more information beyond this but I see you've started to pick up on a certain two-word phrase that's shown up in every adventure you've seen so far...
@@petersvillage7447 Yeah, my brother and I are huge nerds and have been since we were tiny. I think we'll both be forever grateful that our parents recognised and accepted it early on and that when Doctor Who came back they knew we'd love it. I think they caught the odd episode of the classic run as kids themselves but were never die-hard fans.
I was so excited to see your reaction to this episode! This one really cements the kind of Doctor Eccleston portrays - a sad, reluctant survivor who maybe has some PTSD, always moving forward with a (forced?) smile on his face. Which makes his character arc with Rose all the more rich. Thanks as always!
I still remember watching this when it first aired, and my dad was gobsmacked when the Dalek started floating up the stairs. He grew up with the original series, and he always said from then on, for him that was the scariest moment in the show.
Oh no way, that would have been an EPIC moment for him! I love that they've taken something so feared by the people who grew up with Classic Who, and made it even more scary 😱
I'm really glad you enjoyed this episode, it was a great re-introduction to the Daleks for the new audiences. As they were the first ever alien antagonists shown in the classic series.
Honestly this is my favourite episodes of season one, and well in the top ten across the entire series! "You would make a good Dalek" sends a chill down my spine.
I love this episode because we see deep into the doctor's emotions about the Time War. Christopher Eccleston himself told me that this was one of his favorite episodes. We also get a glimpse of how Rose helped make the Doctor a better person, how he became a man who never carried a gun, despised violence and murder.
For someone who is familiar with classic Who, added the fact that here they reveal that the time war that caused the demise of Gallifrey (planet of the Time Lords) was against the Daleks, the reaction of The Doctor to the last one of them is perfectly understood, but the shock of being called a good Dalek, must be huge, almost devastating. Eccleston portrayed that magnificently.
I cannot express how, having grown up watching Classic Doctor Who and not having seen them on screen for nearly 20 years, I was filled with visceral feel when the Dalek first appeared in this episode. Some things from childhood stay with you on a very deep level!
The head in the case is a Cyberman - one of various humanoid species that survived by removing limbs & encasing itself in metal. The sign next to it says "Found in London sewer late twentieth century" - we saw them walk through it - that's the meta line. The Dalek torture scenes were adapted from an audio but that was rather different plot.
From what I know for the Doctor from series one he just fought in the Time War so all of that is still very fresh for him and that’s part of why he is the way he is in the first series.
I think this is where the New Series really takes a step up and I think this episode stands as one of the best Dalek stories ever. Christopher Eccleston is phenomenal and this is the first time we get details about the Time War. More than that, we get a shocking glimpse of the emotional impact the war had on the Doctor. From that initial fear, to that uncontrollable rage and hatred - it's all so intense! Remember, the Doctor is a man of peace who hates weapons, so it says a lot that he wanted to kill this thing and even took up arms. Now for some context: That "old friend/enemy" that has its head on display is a Cyberman. They're the Doctor's second-most iconic enemy and are basically humans from Earth's long-lost twin planet who replaced most of their body parts with cybernetics, losing their emotions in the process. As for the Daleks, they are by far the Doctor's most iconic enemy and are up there with the TARDIS in terms of recognisable Doctor Who icons. I can guarantee that you've seen them around. They were introduced in the show's second story and are credited with making the show successful. There was literally a phenomenon called 'Dalek-Mania' where people became obsessed with them. If you want to know their basic backstory, read on. If not, then skip this paragraph: On the planet Skaro, there was a long-lasting nuclear war between two races: the Kaleds and the Thals. Eventually a deranged Kaled scientist named Davros predicted that his people would eventually mutate due to the fallout from the war, so he designed special travel machines that they could use in that state. Unfortunately for them though, Davros got impatient and kind of experimented on his people to speed up the process, turning them into the blobby hate squids that we know and love today. Then he plopped them into those armed travel machines and convinced that they were the superior beings of the universe, they set out to exterminate or dominate all other life in existence. The writer who created the Daleks actually based them on the Nazis, so they're whole thing is that they hate everything that isn't a Dalek. Final fun fact: Rob Shearman, the writer of this episode, actually adapted this story from a Doctor Who audio story he'd written, called Jubilee. Sorry for the novel-length comment, this episode just has so much to discuss. 😂😂
a bit late but i seriously think this episode is amazing just for showing how intimidating the daleks actually are. not just that, but how the doctor reacts to there being “one left”. you can tell- FEEL even- that he’s traumatized from the war and what happened. but uh yeah… thats all i have to say
Oh man, ive been waiting for you to get to this one! The first episode was what grabbed my attention, but this episode was the one that made me a doctor who fan. Eccleston's acting in this episode was next level, especially the scene where he looses control and just screams at the dalek, almost literally frothing at the mouth with rage. I get literal chills every time
As others have said, welcome to your first introduction to the Daleks… one of the craziest things I find about them, there are some silly things about their design, but it is utterly iconic, as well as the way they speak. I also believe their lore as you will find out more and more as the show progresses inspired a lot of other science fiction. Great stuff… as always, wishing you well, and a wish for myself that you send some of the cooler weather from your hemisphere northward, please and thank you. I am so done with summer!
1:16 Don't be fooled by the black face. The robot head you see is a callback to another villainous monster species of the old show called Cybermen. Having one appear and a Dalek and UNIT in the previous two parter and finally The Nestene Consciousness in episode 1 (they were old show monsters also) cemented something: This show has monsters like the Slitheen, but this universe has DEEP lived in roots. But the old is reintroduced just right...
@@julesreacts This comment reminded me of 2013, one of my daughters complained to her friends in college that nobody understood her references to Doctor Who and one of those friends said he'll watch Doctor Who if she watched Stargate cause he was the only one to have seen that show. They both loved the new shows they discovered but there was one thing they loved more: each other. They are now happily married (Whovian wedding ofcourse) and as far as references goes (Juliette will have to wait for this): his last name is Paternoster so yeah, they have a Gang now.
My Mother who is over 80 now went to Europe (from Australia by boat) in the early 60s for a few years. She danced with a Cosmonaut in Leningrad and had Richard Burton tell her she had lovely eyes in a London pub. But the story she always tells is how she used to share a group house in London and one of the guys there was the set designer at the BBC who made the very first Dalek. And here we are over a half century later still being scared by Daleks.
I was particularly looking forward to seeing you cover this one for multiple reasons. The first is to see your reaction to the Daleks, the Doctor's arch-enemy (as maybe you had heard of them but probably knew nothing about them otherwise). You saw the very serious and intense reaction they provoke in the Doctor (and that the feeling is mutual). I think Eccleston's performance in this episode is amazing, especially as it reveals a lot more about the Doctor's back story (big revelations I was also looking forward to seeing your reaction to. It was also nice seeing the Doctor's reaction at the beginning to the head in the case. It belongs to another major villain race and it was like he had been dealing with the Time War against the Daleks for so long that he missed his previous adventures, even to the point of feeling nostalgic about old enemies. People talk a lot about when the Doctor first encounters the Dalek as an amazing scene (and quite rightly so) but that one is up there for me as well for that moment. It'll be interesting to see if you recognise one of the guest stars in the next episode as he's a big name now ;)
Such an awesome episode! I agree that Christopher was amazing in this episode. Absolutely brilliant acting!! As for the guest star next week, I recognise his face but I've not seen any of his work until now ☺️
Some people start questioning what they are watching during the "farting aliens" episodes. That's why I always tell them to wait for this episode to judge. Episode 4&5 were the first episodes shot and I think they were still trying to figure out the show's identity. But this episode is the beginning of what it will become. I loved this episode the first time I saw it. I already fell in love with Eccleston's Doctor in episode 1, but this made me love him more.
Classic who era it was a popular joke that you can just run up some stairs to escape a dalek 😂 so the elevate moment had an extra layer of shock to it.
Great reaction! This is the episode that turned me into a fan of the show. Eccleston's acting was top notch here. He really sells you on the fear and rage the Doctor feels towards the Dalek. And yeah, he's got some PTSD going on from Time War.
I like the actress who plays Jackie (Rose's mum). I first knew her as the love interest in an early 90's comedy film, Nuns on the Run. More recently she played a semi-regular character in the British sitcom, Him and Her.
This episode was probably the first example of the trend the new series developed of spoiling its own episodes, either through episode titles that give away a surprise or press releases weeks in advance that give them away. They could have named the episode "Metaltron", "The Specimen", "The Thing in the Vault", or something else that would have allowed the audience to be as surprised as the Doctor.
This was one of the best episodes. The Dalek's have been around since the 1960's, facing off against the First Doctor in his second ever story. My dad remembers watching it when he was a kid.
I remember watching this episode when it first aired here in Australia. I've been a fan of Dr Who for as long as I can remember (just a shade under 50 years now), and knowing that the show wanted to bring in new aliens I couldn't help but feel a sense of loss, thinking this was going to be the last time we saw a Dalek. :P At the time it seemed such a perfect send off, while also giving more information as to what had happened to the Time Lords. If there is such a thing as a perfect episode of Dr Who, this one would surely be near the top of the list.
It's a fantastic episode indeed 👏 it's great to see that they are including villains of the classic series into the new series. It serves as a wonderful connection to original fans of the show! I can't wait to see what other villains we see, maybe more from the classic show ☺️
@@julesreacts The only problem I have with your comment is, as an enthusiastic fan, I want to just blurt everything out about what you'll be seeing. :D I will say though that, while bringing the classic critters back is a good thing (in moderation), some of the new creatures are potentially terrifying. I was I could tell you, but I don't want to spoil anything for you.
Jules it seemed you were channeling the doctor a bunch of times today -- true empathy! I’m glad you enjoyed Chris Eccleston’s performance he’s an amazing actor and was the perfect person to re-introduce us to the doctor during this new era.
I adore this episode and Christopher was AMAZING. I still remember the way his anger and fury made me feel... it was actually very intimidating and frightening. It makes me feel quite sad for him as he's experienced so much pain 😢
this episode is such a good introduction to the daleks in new who. they were a mainstay enemy for classic who from the 1960s onward, and i think this episode does a fantastic job of introducing the importance of the daleks even to a new viewer who is unfamiliar with what they are
It is such a joy to see your awesome reaction to a show I grew up watching. So many things to come for you as you continue to watch. Looking forward to seeing more.
The Gallifreyans and the Daleks were at war throughout all of time, essentially. Both have their own abilities to travel through time. Back in the day, the Daleks were the stand in for the Nazis, while the robot man that you saw and thought was going to be the antagonist (these are called Cybermen) were analogous to the communist. 4 episodes in and we feel so much for Rose! Great writing/acting! This series is full of incredible episodes. Chris Eccleston is credited with "regenerating" the series and infusing it with a new life! And now, we get to see your reactions which are "fantastic"! Looking forward to the next one!
I adore Rose!! She is so adventurous and although she is a teenager, she also seems to have a good level of maturity whilst still retaining her carefree spirit. I really love both her and the Doctor 💜
Congratulations, Juliette! You have now been introduced to the OG antagonist to the Doctor - the Dalek Like Moriarty to Sherlock Holmes, or the Joker to Batman, the Dalek is the most iconic enemy of the Doctor "You would make a good Dalek" is a powerful line of dialogue
I think that an character beginning with M is the Moriarty really. If you are familiar with Warhammer 40k, the Daleks are more like the Orks. You get rid of them, but their spores just take a bit of time to grow into more Orks.
Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor is so very underrated. The history of the Daleks vs the Time Lords goes back to the beginning. More of the story does come along later. The next episode you will really dig.
Dr Who is a unique show. Loved Ecclestone. Always enjoyed the Daleks especially with the Tom Baker Doctor. Love the Bad Wolf foreshadowing. This was as sweet a rendition of the Daleks of any. The genocidal war they fought with the Time Lords brings out the worst in the Doctor. The thing to remember is the Doctor is not human.
I never thought I'd like any Doctor near as much as I loved Tom Baker (except maaaayyybe David Tennant because he's, well, the incomparable David Tennant), but Eccleston is amazing! I love him.
As someone who grow up with Doctor Who, seeing someone who does no know the Dales is like seeing someone who goes into the batman franchise without knowing who the Joker is.
You really never heard of a Dalek before Jewel? I know people who have never watched doctor who who have still heard of Daleks haha. Glad you’re enjoying it x
The Dalek's were The Doctor's most frequent enemy. They were also very meme-worthy, even befofe memes were really a thing! Jokes about toilet plungers and handicap ramps galore. This episode is not only a love letter to the original creators of Dr Who, they make one of his most mocked enemies absolutely TERRIFYING! No one is laughing at that plunger now!
This was the episode that sold me on _Doctor Who._ Growing up in the 80s, it was this mysterious show with a legendary status that aired on US public broadcasting stations so it remained enigmatic to me. I caught this episode in the original run and realized now what everybody else knew long before me: god-tier OG nerdcore genius. So goddamn hard to believe that one of the best Doctors is the guy least suited for the role. Because holy SHIT does he spin gold out of every second in this episode *alone.* Even Tennant had to overdo it sometimes to get where Eccleston goes effortlessly. It just sucks that Eccleston didn't work out and is also a colossal asshole.
I didn't know that about Christopher 😔 I think he's absolutely amazing and so charismatic. I'm already nervous about having to get used to another doctor!
@@julesreacts He's copped to being a bully in his career, albeit recently. He's from a northern working class family so he's got a chip on his shoulder about a lot of things, but that's probably what gives him the ability to play villains so well. He's also a DAMN good actor, which is why he can play The Doctor as well as he can.
The intro to the daleks was just perfect, the way it killed without any kind of hesitation, at first, is really chilling, the mass electrocution was horrifying. I do find it a bit funny how its set in America and everyones underestimating the dalek like don't sweat we got this because gun, oh crap they don't work we're buggered. I'll never understand why people think 'hes older than her' or vice versa is a good argument as to why characters can't be together when one of them is immortal, so long as the younger one is not TOO young like a literal child cough Renesme cough
I love this episode, The Doctor's sadness saying "I win". The Dalek's are evil incarnate, they are the the opposite of what the Doctor stands for. The show was never going to let them leave, they are too good of a foil. The Time War is an idea we we won't be dropping for many seasons, a driving character motivation that is the core of what keeps the Doctor needing a companion.
With this episode I decided that this was my series. The until now funny Doctor showed a darker face and an interesting background was shown, a war between Daleks and Time Lords in which the Doctor took part and his participation was decisive, since as discussed in the chapter both Daleks and Lords of Time were exterminated. There's also the appearance of the Bad Wolf track that you noted.
My other favorite reactor, Miss Shannan from _After Show Reacts,_ put up her reaction to a _Stargate: SG1_ episode today. Actress Anna-Louise Plowman is in both of them. Here, she is portraying Diana, van Statten's assistant. In that one - well, I can't give it away.
To anybody who grew up with Dr Who - the Daleks are the greatest of his enemies - and as a child terrified me. Despite them always being wiped out, the writers always find a way to bring them back - timey whimey stuff (although that comes later 😁)
I've been loving the escalating positivity from these vids, especially considering this was the series I grew up on. Dalek is still one of my favourites in terms of entertainment value, and the fact it introduced me to this classic monster in a way which subverted past generations. It's quite an achievement that they can make a bronze cyborg pepperpot from the 60's seem like a tangible threat.
An absolutely fantastic episode! and for the first time with Eccleston, we really see the darkness and the hopelessness in his heart. Top 5 episode of all time, it has to be. :) so glad you're enjoying!! Keep on going, so much more to experience! :)
@@julesreacts you are a tried and true Whovian now. 😊 welcome to the best fandom on earth. This show will make you laugh, make you cheer, and make you cry. But if you let it … it’ll also prove that love and truth will always win out over evil and hate. We are all glad you’re here! My apologies if saying “top 5” comes off as a spoiler. It’s merely an opinion of mine, but I hope it proves to be true. To be fair, there really aren’t bad episodes. Just ones you might appreciate less than others. But thank you so much for starting this journey!! I love sharing in watching these with you.
Well hello, Jules! The day is proceeding wonderfully here. I seem to have been the agent of mine own comments destruction, so let's start again! You're looking warm this day, Jules,💜 and now you get more of the desired background on the Doctor. A wonderful episode, where you see the Doctor can become quite ragey about certain things, but nothing so much as Daleks.😅 The Dalek was correct in saying they were very much alike, but only when the Doctor rose to the Dalek level of hatred. When the Dalek sunk to the level of kindness, and empathy, he could no longer face being alive. A few quite powerful scenes, the moment when the Doctor sees the lights and hears the voice, in the dark room, always gives me a bit of a chill.😜 I know it is only one american, only one US american, but look at the contrast between him, and the folks from the UK, in previous episodes. They are mostly welcoming to the Doctor, but this dude only sees profit, more power, and falls victim to his own greed. A great episode, and I am very glad you enjoyed it so thoroughly Even having a good laugh at the intruder window line, as well.😂 Plus you've adopted "Fantastic!"😝 Have a great day, Jules,💜 and I'll be seeing you again... pretty soon🥲😊
This is an important point in the show. For all the fun and cheesiness of the earlier episodes, this is the first dark and semi-serious episode, and the first bit of information regarding the time war and learning how and why the Doctor is alone. In the lore, the time war occurred just prior to this series so the whole thing is still very raw, hence the angry and emotional reaction. It's part of why Doctor Who is so good, one moment you can be laughing, the next crying your eyes out. Fantastic! Remember that word, there will be a test later on lol.
Maybe van Statten ended up in my hometown - Sacramento - they called it out at the end of the episode. Haven't seen him around, but the Greater Sacramento area is a fairly big place. Lol. Anyway, nice reaction as usual Jules.
Jules, I'm having to catch up with your videos again. Just got to this one. This is where this modern version of Doctor Who really took off. If you have loved it so far you will really love it from now on. Also, I think this is where Christopher Eccleston really perfected his portrayal of the Doctor. Also, you can't go wrong with the Daleks.
Aww I'm sorry, Trev! It's hard to strike a good balance as far as these uploads go. I feel that there's plenty per week, but there will always be many comments that keep wanting more, more, more! Christopher was AMAZING in this episode! What a brilliant actor. I adore him!!
@@julesreacts No need to apologise. I welcome all your videos and love the amount you're uploading. Yours are the first ones I look for. I shall be watching Friday's Buffy episode in a minute.
Trev 💜 thank you!! That's so nice to hear. You've been a part of both channels since the beginning and I love that you're still around and enjoying the videos! It's wonderful. Thank you for everything 🥰
Everyone else is going to say this, but the Daleks have been the Doctor's greatest enemies going all the way back to the start of the show in 1963. They have been in dozens of amazing stories. Will they be back after the 'last' Dalek died here? Maaaaaaybe...
The 'robot/white head creature' is actually another Classic Doctor Who villain, probably about as famous as the Dalek. You will meet them later one, though with a slightly different, more modern look.
The thing i love about doctor who is that its really about friends travelling and discovering the universe and themselves. The sci-fi and aliens are fun, but the stories serve the characters. Its about people and how they tick.
Hi Jules, I cried at this episode and I believe that you were moved too. The Daleks are The Doctor's greatest and most enduring foe, and you will watch an episode featuring the Daleks in every season. Creator Terry Nation modelled The Daleks on The Nazi's, and a sense of dread accompanies every rncounter. Finally a bit of Lore for you: The Daleks are the metal exo-skeleton used to protect the original race 'The Kaleds' from the nuclear fallout on their home planet Skaro. Two races lived on Skaro, the humanoid 'Thalls' and the gangly Kaleds. An ensuing war heralded a terrible nuclear explosion, and having been victorious, The Daleks ventured into space intent on Universal domination. Now to blow my nose and dab my eyes! See you next week....x
I will admit, when I first saw the Dalek, I thought it looked and sounded ridiculous. "How could this thing possibly be a threat to someone like the Doctor?" I asked my screen. "It can't even handle stairs." Then they addressed exactly that, and I stood corrected. Anyway, you've now been introduced to the Space Nazis! That's what I (and others, I'm sure) call them. All I will say regarding them is that at some point in the future (at least not until after this season is over), it's worth going back to look at their first appearance in Classic Who (even if you don't do a reaction to it). It's very interesting. Lastly, seeing the Doctor flip from kind to hate-filled in a breath is always a shock. The fact that they elicit this strong a reaction from him really drives home how much he hates himself for what he did in the Time War (because of them).
This show had 26 seasons from 1963 to 1989. They had a television show in 1999 which was a US pilot and an attempt to reboot the show that failed. the BBC came back with Chris Ecclestone in 2005. There have also been some good spinoffs as in Torchwood 2006-11. The Daleks first showed up in the second year of Dr who as armoured implacable cyborg creatures with no emotions beyond hate, They were seen as a stand in for NAZIs who were busy exterminating all the unworthyand impure even other lesser Daleks. There is a lot of canon in Dr Who that gets interwoven from beginning to end. tom Baker came up against Davros and the daleks in 1975 in season 12 of the show. A lot of creatures get modified , sometimes to play up the camp aspects for fun but the Daleks seemed to maintain their menace over the 60 years since they were first created.
1:16, I love how the New Series that they were not going to make any reference to the Classic series, yet they still managed to stick in a Cyberman helmet in the first series. This is also extremely nerdy and nit picky, but the tag underneath it says that the head was found in the sewers of London, which is true and an actual story, except that’s not a Cyberman helmet from that story. I mean, it is technically, but it’s the version that was used for a later story.
Welcome to your introduction to the Daleks. I've always like them. It's such a classic sci-fy monster design from the middle of last century. Essentially an upside down trash can with toilet bowl plunger stuck on the front. Classic. Thanks for the continued review. I really enjoyed this first season of "New Who"
Somebody may have stated this already, but I think a bit of history from vintage-"Who" is appropriate here. Can you imagine that blob being humanoid? The race the Dales evolved from was originally humanoid-not Earth-human, but human nonetheless, which was why it was easy for this one to regenerate itself from the sample of Rose's DNA. It just didn't count on that DNA also affecting its mental processes, making it even more human, which is beyond the Daleks' comprehension. The scientist who developed them took steps to strip all sense of conscience and emotion save for hate.
@@joeb918Superficial friends.
It’s so good, they incorporated that quote into the 14th doctors sonic screwdriver design
Agreed he gets a bad wrap in the modern era, but he is the best of the new doctors in my opinion.
Chris Eccleston's acting in that first scene with the Dalek is really where you get the sense for why he's normally a movie actor. Gives me chills.
He was INCREDIBLE in this episode!
He absolutely hated the role but he sure did well!
@@jlinkous05 He didn't hate the role. He actually loved playing the doctor. He just had a complex relationship with his co-workers.
I love the way in your summed up the doctors character. there is a quote from one of doctor whos writings that sums him up perfectly
"Heroes tell us who we want to be but when they made this particular hero they didn’t give him a gun, they gave him a screwdriver to fix things.
Oh my gosh, Rob Shearman? For real?! Sir, it's an honour to make your virtual acquaintance.
It's an honour to have you here 😸💜
This is my favourite episode of Doctor Who.....hats off to you sir for your incredible work
The show needs more writers like you!
“You would be a good Dalek” haunted the Doctor for the rest of his life
The kindest gentlest people are often the most damage people.
"...intruder window." An Eric Morecambe classic 😂
"-Are you frightened, Rose Tyler?
-Yes.
-So am I."
He was honestly exceptional... Amazing performance!!
As an old school Whovian (Tom Baker, Number Four) you have no idea of the impact and chill up the spine those first words from the Dalek (DOC-TOR…) create, the Daleks are an iconic and immortal foe…
"Doc... torrr..."
"The Doctor..."
Classic moment, in a great episode, and for long-time fans, a great reintroduction to a classic villain.
This is awesome to read! I am so glD that this episode really cemented things for you. It sure was a good one 🤗
Daleks go back to the second ever episode back in 1963
So very glad you got to this episode!

I adored Christopher in this episode. He is an incredible actor! He can have us laughing one moment and torn up in the next. I really need to check out more of his work as I NEED more 🥰
Thank you so much for your kind words!!
@@johnrob3215 I think he was acting without thinking it through, thus why I said his need was subconscious.
This is when I fell in love with the show.
Eccleston's performance is gold.
Agreed!! Isn't he incredible 😍

The Doctor has a Very...Very Long history with the Daleks....=))
1:17 Xenomorph Egg in the glass case at the back of the room.
Yes!! And now I both love AND despise them 🤣
So glad you enjoyed this episode! The Daleks go back to the very beginning of Doctor Who (1963!) and are the most iconic monsters in the series. Eccleston's performance is spectacular, you can feel the anger, the fear, and the guilt of the Doctor in that first scene with the Dalek. Thanks for your great reactions!
He was absolutely amazing in this episode! What a treat this one was 💜
Love your reaction as always Jules! welcome to your first meeting with a Dalek, the most loathed and feared race in the universe and time.the part of this episode that was always my favorite is that the Doctor, who is the most compassionate being in the universe, became a rage filled monster only interested in his enemies death, while the Dalek, a remorseless killing machine, was becoming compassionate, and unsure of it's purpose, effectively trading places. more info on the time war and Daleks is coming, can't wait to watch you find out!
Charlie, thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed this one. It was one of my favourites so far!
8? I'm envious. Like sharks and dinosaurs, the Daleks are best met in childhood - they certainly haunted mine...
Now for some context:
That "old friend/enemy" that has its head on display is a Cyberman.
If not, then skip this paragraph:
On the planet Skaro, there was a long-lasting nuclear war between two races: the Kaleds and the Thals.
Such an incredible episode, glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you, Chris! It was a great one for sure!
@@Legendary3Dgamer Nah it's fun to do weekly and keep it going for longer! It's what Blind Wave did.
a bit late but i seriously think this episode is amazing just for showing how intimidating the daleks actually are. not just that, but how the doctor reacts to there being “one left”. you can tell- FEEL even- that he’s traumatized from the war and what happened. but uh yeah… thats all i have to say
Great stuff…
as always, wishing you well, and a wish for myself that you send some of the cooler weather from your hemisphere northward, please and thank you. I am so done with summer!
"You would make a good Dalek"
chills. literal chills.
3:45 🤩😍Omg she's from Stargate SG1! Great episode thanks so much Juliette🥰
Is she? I haven't watched that one! I have a lot of shows I need to watch 😅💜
That's an amazing tale!! I adore that. Thank you for sharing!
@@johnrob3215 You'll eventually find out. Suffice it to say the info about the Time War is only gradually going to be revealed. Enjoy the journey.
Jackie is an icon, we love Jackie.
I will find out in due course but I also will admit I don't like scary things soooo... I'm in for a nice time 🤣
Jules it seemed you were channeling the doctor a bunch of times today -- true empathy!
A dalek is only supposed to be able to feel hate, but it absorbed the ability to feel more from Rose
Damn the Daleks. Even knowing nothing about Doctor Who these guys are iconic and I was scared. (Even though they are literally carrying a plunger).
Fun fact: So far as I know, before this episode, Daleks were unable to fly and were frequently bamboozled by stairs. Not anymore!
this episode is such a good introduction to the daleks in new who. they were a mainstay enemy for classic who from the 1960s onward, and i think this episode does a fantastic job of introducing the importance of the daleks even to a new viewer who is unfamiliar with what they are
It is such a joy to see your awesome reaction to a show I grew up watching. So many things to come for you as you continue to watch. Looking forward to seeing more.
Ecclestone is great in this (well he is in the whole season really). New Who was so full of ideas and themes in these first few seasons
You have now been introduced to the OG antagonist to the Doctor - the Dalek
Like Moriarty to Sherlock Holmes, or the Joker to Batman, the Dalek is the most iconic enemy of the Doctor
"You would make a good Dalek" is a powerful line of dialogue
Or maybe like the Balrog to Gandalf...
(I would disagree with the comparison, only because there is a literal direct analogue. But I won't say.)
@@OpenMawProductions I think I know where you're going with that and if I'm right that would be valid
I think that an character beginning with M is the Moriarty really.
If you are familiar with Warhammer 40k, the Daleks are more like the Orks. You get rid of them, but their spores just take a bit of time to grow into more Orks.
@@j9lorna Watch it with the spoilers! Don't ruin her journey with hints.
9:57 see how smart they are? My fav doc who villains
They are pretty cool, in a murderous and creepy way haha 😬
You really never heard of a Dalek before Jewel? I know people who have never watched doctor who who have still heard of Daleks haha. Glad you’re enjoying it x
I might have heard the name somewhere but it's like the name R2D2... I've heard of it but I've got no idea what it is 🤣 loving the show SO much!!
@@julesreacts "Like R2-D2" except the Daleks first appeared on Doctor Who fourteen years before Star Wars was released lol.
@@blueshark7385 The point is that she knew the name but had no clue what it was.
@@Talisguy Ah okay I misread her comment.

I could have worded it better! It was 6:30am then, no coffee, I didn't do too badly all things considered hehe 😅
Oh wow, top 5! I am so honoured to have watched this one and also to be accepted into the fold by such wonderful people 🥰
@@julesreacts you are a tried and true Whovian now.
A wonderful episode, where you see the Doctor can become quite ragey about certain things, but nothing so much as Daleks.😅
The Dalek was correct in saying they were very much alike, but only when the Doctor rose to the Dalek level of hatred. When the Dalek sunk to the level of kindness, and empathy, he could no longer face being alive.
A few quite powerful scenes, the moment when the Doctor sees the lights and hears the voice, in the dark room, always gives me a bit of a chill.😜
I know it is only one american, only one US american, but look at the contrast between him, and the folks from the UK, in previous episodes. They are mostly welcoming to the Doctor, but this dude only sees profit, more power, and falls victim to his own greed.
A great episode, and I am very glad you enjoyed it so thoroughly Even having a good laugh at the intruder window line, as well.😂 Plus you've adopted "Fantastic!"😝
Have a great day, Jules,💜 and I'll be seeing you again... pretty soon🥲😊
My personal favorite 9 episode. Eccleston shows every emotion in this. Brialliant.
One of my favorite episodes.
The Daleks are the number one enemy of The Doctor, This is one of the best Dalek episodes, along with 'The Genesis of the Daleks' from the 4th Doctor.
I'm so glad you're enjoying my favorite show. Always good to see someone new discover doctor who
1:16, I love how the New Series that they were not going to make any reference to the Classic series, yet they still managed to stick in a Cyberman helmet in the first series.
