- A longer version of a 2016 video ( • The Vice Ogof y Daren ... ). In this version Ian is interviewed before the trip and he is also seen after the trip - yes, he did get out! I've also removed the tension building music that many people found annoying.

Watch out for nightmares my freind ! A 6 inch space for air , but each time you go under to find your way out you get disoriented and just make it back to the air pocket ! Eventually you'll have to go for it completely ! But you know you won't make it ! I had this nightmate once ! So very real and terrifying beyond beleif ! How long do you keep returning to the air pocket ! Before taking a mad underwater scramble in a direction that probably leads to nowhere ! How did I get into this ! Oh yeah ; Talked into this underwater death trap !!!

I wonder who the hell originally discovers these caves and are like "yeah, that looks like a fun place to go into" i mean there looks like tons of spots where you are either stuck or would have to go back the entire ways backwards. To hell with that

I've been in caves similar to this and had muscle cramps while stuck in positions where I'm unable to move and stretch it out. It's not fun.

This seems unnecessarily time-consuming.
Why not simply thoroughly grease the caver in a thick layer of lard, wedge them firmly in the opening orifice, then pressurize the air behind them? Once the pressurization is sufficient, the lubricated caver will be forced at high velocity through the narrow channels of the restrictions and eventually into the distance innards of the cave.
We csn see the sides of the passageway are quite smooth, so there's little chance of injury. Cavers are a durable lot, so being shoved at many meters per second down rough, tight passageways should not be cause for complaint.
Here in the USA, where life is fast-paced and we're always behind schedule, we've used this technique to successfully force-inject cavers great distances into various systems.
Cavers can be extracted just as quickly by reversing the compressor airflow and suctionjng them out.
Works a treat!

If you pressurize the air behind, surely the bone in the legs would collapse due to the vaccum of pressurized air.
To me, a most frightening scenario, other than an earth tremor; headlamp malfunction... is coming to a dead-end, unable to turn around, and realizing you must crawl out backwards, up inclines, around tight curves, etc. without becoming wedged in & stuck...

This happens to a person. He reached dead end when he was in upside down position. Search nutty putty cave incident that man got stuck and died after 27 hours. After this incident they sealed the cave with his body still inside.

I have the utmost respect for the person who originally pushed this lead. That person did it knowing he/she might have to back out without turning around. Its much harder to move that way because your toes don't pull nearly as well as they push. Pushing leads to their absolute limits, just to make sure, requires a remarkable amount of mental fortitude.

The idea that one is so constructed that they have to push with their toes is an immediate nope for me.
Not to mention your clothes bunching up and sticking you.
The way it works supposedly you cant go into a chamber or passage without being able to also back out of the very same place you crawled into and you must be flat as well and in most cases then around now all that to me is a very tall order but these cavers mindset is positive they do live life right on the edge I mean to think the way they do is scary it's like to me they have a death wish that somehow they might not make it out get lost or get stuck but my hat goes out to them folk who engage with these Caves conflicts like the vice,the birth canal and many other challenging caves it's hard to take in but somehow I understand there mindset around this one guy a caver says he wakes up in his bed and thinks to himself I'd love to be in a tight spot right now and finding my way out of a very tight spot wow very courageous slightly insane and adventurous God I admire there antics as much as it gives me anxiety and I'm literally willing them on to get out and get to safety stay safe enjoy as you seem to do that in bagfulls but dont risk your life unnecessary when going through these tight spots God willing nobody gets stuck or gets killed while caving stay safe God bless man.
@@steveelliott4642 There are outliers, no doubt, but most cavers don't enjoy extremely tight spaces. You may often find a caver displaying some level of pride in his or her ability to handle them, but that's not the same thing. Cavers tolerate tight passages either because we already know there is something worth seeing on the other side, or because its unexplored and it needs to be surveyed and added to the map (plus, maybe it goes on to something great, but usually not). Oh, and I suppose tight squeezes are good for hazing rookies :-)
The moment I saw that wet entrance passage I would be like,- "Actually Iv'e suddenly remembered I was going to sketch the scenery outside".
I go caving frequently where i live, i have spent a cumulative few hundred hours underground and have gone through some squeezes that were only possible for me to achieve due to having hyper mobility in my joints. Im 6 foot 1 and weigh 85kg and to go into some tight spaces sometimes requires me to pop my shoulder out (to make my shoulder width smaller) tilt my head (with the helmet off because its too large) and breathe out all the air in my lungs to squeeze through a tight hole, the result of one such occasion was rediscovering a section of cave with mud figurines and signatures that haven’t been seen in over 50 years. Being in a tight hole in the ground is surreal as its a total absence of sound and light the most peace you will ever find that is why i go caving.

What happens if you breath out to move along and cant breath in again as it's not possible. I admire you and people like you as I wouldn't have the balls to do it. Not a bloody chance. Would you like to do the nutty putty cave. What would be ultimate. Surely you need to no before hand there is a way out. If not how do you calculate the risks. Surely some places there is one way in no way backwards and maybe no entrance out. How would you no.

I went caving once. The majority of it was a very cool experience, however it was the very first climb in that was terrifying. Less than a foot of clearance, your right shoulder is completely pinned, with only a small area for play for your lefr arm. At about the middle point of said crawl, you're Completely pinned and all you can do is squirm. I made it though, and will never do it again.

If you'll allow me to change the subject and present a hypothetical, what would you do if someone (let's say with stents) dies while in the middle of a tight passage and blocks the way for the cavers inside? Would you have to cut him out piece by piece. Don't mean to be morbid, or anything.
Although it is a small passage it would be possible to get a body out without cutting it to pieces, but check the statistics - the chances of this happening are extremely remote.

I saw a video on John Edward Jones. Before that I thought caves were big open spaces. I never in my life thought that people would crawl through tiny little spaces for fun.

Keith, what do you do if you get stuck? Is there any sort of method... other than not panicking.
The weirdest thing happened when I went into my first cave (Trou Nou Maulin in Belgium)..... I lost my claustrophobia. To every body asking 'Why'.... Because it actually is fun. There's some sort of serenity that comes over you that is very soothing. Although you might get stuck or don't know how to continue, you can always wait, get to your senses and get help from your other cavers. It's wonderful down there! Ian did make it through The Vice but then quite sensibly decided to turn back. On the other side of The Vice it is possible to stand up and turn round.

Great video and great channel! Keith after reading and watching videos about the tragic death case in Nutty Putty cave in the US I have a question for you. How do you deal with new routes in caves? When do you decide it is time to go back or when you continue through the uncharted area? How do you prevent such tragedy that cost John Jones his life, when he became trapped in the squeeze and couldn't move and couldn't return, because the tunnel he crawled through turned downside. Thanks for the answer!
Thanks Alice. Pleased to hear that you are liking the videos. The golden rule is never to enter a tight downward slopping passage head first if you don't know for certain that it opens up further on. Getting stuck in a cave is a very rare occurrence and for rescue teams to not be able to free the stuck person is extremely rare, so rare that stories like the tragedy of John Jones make world headlines.
The worst thing about going in first is if the guy behind you gets stuck. There is no way out then.
If you eat a pretzel you have to wait until it digests until you can get back out.

I think I would be pretty good at this considering how small I am (if I were stronger), but it terrifies me even to think about it. Very impressive my dude! Awesome birthday adventure- you must be very fit and very brave.
The first time I did The Vice I went in facing the wrong side. There is a sharp bend at the end (where the camera is) so exiting wasn't possible. Its a bugger to reverse!
First time I done Darren we encountered a team coming out and had to turn around going on the entrance. When both teams were out the laughed at us as we were not equipped for it, and added us against going in. We took notice of what they said and what they were wearing. They were the film crew for Martyn Farr's through journey the mountain. We did go back at a later date and spent a good 10 hours in the cave.

Tried it once.....about 30 years ago....at Shasta Caverns in northern CA. Aside from the regular walk-thru tours ( on lighted walkways ).......at that time...you could take 'spelunking' tours. A guide led 6 or 7 of us down.....entering at around 5am. I think we were down in there for at least 4 or 5 hours.

Watched a video about a man getting stuck in a cave upside down yesterday & they couldn't get him out .He died there & his body is still in that cave to this day & will always be . They sealed up the entrance where he went in so nobody else would ever get stuck & die there .

what if somebody is going out and you don’t know somebody is going out so you go in and one blocks the other and you all get stuck and die. that scares me along with everything else.
