    I got stuck in the same place about 20 years ago, the two I was with had shot off like racing snakes, took me hrs to slide back, then waited outside. I never went back to try again, and I also never caved with the two said cavers on my own again !

      Hi Paul. Sounds horrible. I've had a similar experience (in a different cave) where the leader left me and another caver behind. I couldn't understand why he didn't come back to look for us. What must he have been thinking?

    Oh man... I would be so worried about bumping into or accidentally breaking one of those amazing white mineral formations! There were a few places where it looked like they were really close to your heads. Knowing me, I would make a mistake and stand up too early or something, snap one of those things, then spend the rest of the month thinking about what I'd done and what an imbecile I had been. On a side note, really nice to see that dude who got stuck in The Vice the first time (Mark?) finally make it through and see for himself what all the fuss was about. I love how much everyone in these videos seems to appreciate what they are seeing. You can tell everyone is passionate as hell about caving despite some hiccups once in awhile in tight obstacles.

    I wonder if they still have the Daren Cilau Rescue Kit hanging over the doorway at Whitewalls Cottage (The Chelsea Speleological Society hut). It is a toy pistol and it reminded people of the serious consequences of an accident in Daren Cilau as it will be impossible to get a seriously injured caver out through the entrance crawl.

    • @CaverKeith
      @CaverKeith  10 лет назад +3

      Hi. I too remember the rescue kit. I was at Whitewalls in February and I think it has been taken down now. I know someone who broke his arm in several places in the cave and came out through the entrance crawl with a little assistance in about 4 hours. Not something I would like to contemplate.

    Thank you for putting these caving videos online! It's great to see these sights that the majority of us would never get to see otherwise. Btw. How did the Antlers form horizontally??? Absolutely stunning formations in that cave.

    • @CaverKeith
      @CaverKeith  5 лет назад +2

      The Antlers are helictites. There are a number of theories about how they are formed. According to Wikipedia helictites have a curving or angular form that looks as if they were grown in zero gravity. They are most likely the result of capillary forces acting on tiny water droplets, a force often strong enough at this scale to defy gravity. I agree they are stunning.

    Enjoyed watching this one with my daughter, I went into the cave the weekend before last, was showing her this so she could see what it was like.. she now wants to visit the cave! There was a fair amount of water in the crawl when we were in there, I had my furry on but got completely wet through, wish I'd worn my wet suit! Being skinny the cold got to me more than the crawl, more of 'stoop' for me in most places aside from the main 'constrictions'

    • @CaverKeith
      @CaverKeith  8 лет назад +5

      +Tekdrake Lots of techniques have been used by rescue teams over the years including chipping away rock, using grease or washing up liquid and attaching ropes. However getting completely stuck is very rare and usually it's simply a matter of calming the stuck person down and then lifting and pulling them out.

    now i know why cavers use drag bags, it's clearly to store there massive bollocks in!.. i can imagine the biggest threat when down there is not the gaps and climbs but panic, it must take something really special inside to be able to stay calm in some of them squeezes and can only imagine that panic could be a real danger when down a hole.

    You go in and make it to the room they did, then when you return back out there's 500 grand waiting for you...who's doing it?

    How do you map out something like this without knowing you're going to get stuck in a spot you can't turn around in?

    Are cavers allowed to remove formations? Ive never seen anyone do it. I image they can be quite $$$

    • @andypops6823
      @andypops6823 5 лет назад

      Short word no. No caver would want to vandalise and destroy a cave. Most caves have taped markers on the floor that every caver understands not to cross to protect formations. The formations wouldn't actually be worth much, and certainly not worth the beating they would probably get if caught stealing them.

    Hi Keith. I'm a product design student at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California. I've been watching all of your videos lately to help gain insight about caving. Would you be willing to answer a few of my questions about caving for my research so I can eventually design/develop a product that enhances/improves the caving experience for my project? Thanks!

      Hi Kaitlyn. Happy to answer your questions. My email address can be found at the bottom of the home page on the Dudley Caving Club website at dudleycavingclub.org.uk. Any chance of an all expenses trip to Pasadena? Ha ha.
