- I'm at the south coast today and as it's a Friday, I've headed down to Chez Fred in Bournemouth as loads of you have recommended that I come down and give it a try. The catch? They serve unlimited chips!

I went to Chez Fred, travelling Fulham fan before the Bournemouth match last year. It's incredible value and amazing food. Great review Gary.

Well I'm a cod guy and know for a fact how good this place is so pleased you gave it a good review.
I'm a Northerner but spend a lot of time around Bournemouth and probably tried all their chippies over the last decade , our favourite being Alexander's Fish & Chips in Christchurch . They don't have a seated area but we always go and eat them at Mudeford Quay just around the corner.

Another great review Gary. I reckon it won't be long that you'll have so many comments on your videos you won't be able to respond to them all. But well done! It's impressive how fast your channel is growing and that's all down to your no-nonsense, no gimmicks approach to your reviews. I've watched a lot of food reviewers and there comes a point where you tire of "zany" challenges, loud music and fast editing. I've just realised......you're basically the food reviewer equivalent of comfort food! And I mean that as a compliment :)

The unlimited chips is very much like in many Belgian restaurants. I worked at a plant north of Gent for a while and we ate regularly in Ertvelde at what is now De Gouden Kroon (might have changed, it's so long ago.) On eone occasion, the three of us had different main courses and our Belgian man had something that didn't need chips, but being a growing lad he helped himself to a huge plateful we had, more than enough for the three iof us anyway. We still hadn't fully finished when the waitress noticed the empty chip plate, apologised and without a word from us ran off to get us yet another huge plateful. The Belgians are proud of their frites! Might go to Bournemouth again sometime and if we do, I'll look out for Chez Fred.

Unlimited chips: makes a big difference from those posh places that struggle to put more than 6 chips with the fish. Looks good. But I agree, shame haddock wasn't on the menu. Cheers.

Been going here for 20 years with my family, always been incredible food and value.

My family are originally from Dorset so in the summer we go to Bournemouth for a family meetup, I'll definitely be visiting this place if it's still open in the summer, looks delicious and the unlimited chips are great for the little nieces and nephews

I’m not British, so I’ve never had curry sauce with Fish and Chips. But I do like a generous dousing of cider vinegar.
If you like your tartar sauce, you need to come to Japan. They make a really interesting tartar that actually has cut up boiled egg in it. Really nice with fried food.

I like hard boiled eggs chopped up in Heinz Salad Cream, in a sandwich, but I'm a savage.

This is another great review Gary, that meal was incredible value especially with unlimited chips! Just one thing Gary you mentioned that they get their fresh fish from Brixham in Cornwall, the town is actually in Devon and I spend alot of time there. Please keep doing these fantastic reviews, very enjoyable.

I live about 35 minutes drive from Chez Fred’s and it is our go to fish and chip shop. We normally do takeaway and drive and eat it in the car. I have never had a bad bit of fish and chips from Fred’s. Love the staff, but choose your time to avoid the massive wait for both the takeaway and eat in. Defo 5*

Evening Gary Fish and chip shop looked good. Love Bournemouth too use to visit a lot. Nice bit of French bread and butter, No to mushy peas can't stand them but know you like them. Love Cod and it looks nice and white. Its Tartar sauce for me every time! Was the meal Hot Gary? Thought you were a little harsh with 9/10 thought a good 91/2/10 due to value etc but you know best. The venue looked really upmarket and lovely inside. The cod was exceptional so white flaky and fresh looking and batter crispy. I also thought Gary the chips needed to be a bit crispier but otherwise the whole meal was very good value. I quite liked the mushy peas thicker and the curry sauce looked good for dipping unlimited chips in. That’s definitely on my list to visit.

That looked fantastic. The restaurant was beautiful and I loved how the meal was presented on those lovely plates. It really did look inviting. I can't imagine anyone asking for more chips ... that was a really good portion. And the fish... well it just looked delicious...thick, white and flakey. Unbeatable value ... I would go there in a heartbeat!! A nice tartre sauce too ... that's not easy to find.

Looked yummy Gary...and great vfm too ! Plus a great pot of tea...unlimited chips thats a deal breaker,especially if you take hungry children! I do sometimes have curry..but i do like gravy on my chips..and deffo tartare sauce on my fish..9/10 is good🎉 thanks for sharing 🎉

Like this restaurant, I also get my fish from Iceland. And when I don't feel like going into town I just go down the road to Sainsburys 😅

Looked good fish and chips and excellent value. The chips may have lacked a bit of crispiness in the eating, but on video at least they looked excellent. Definitely will give it a visit when I'm next in that part of the country.

Hi Gary, I'm a regular viewer of your reviews and always enjoy them. Have you thought of putting a short guide book together referenced by town. I live outside the UK and it would be very useful to have to know where some of these great eateries are when traveling around. There may be plenty of guides already on the market but you strike a cord with so many of us who the same classic British tastes as you.😊

The mushy peas looked perfect and much more appealing than the green sloppy slime that many places serve. Mushy peas are a vegetable side dish, not a sauce. 😱

Looked absolutely luvly plate of food, 9 out of 10 a very fair score,I'm a cod man myself as it's it not so strong tasting as haddock,today i had oven cooked fish and chips,,alas not a patch on what you had, another restaurant in the diary, thanks gary, congratulations on 30k, the sky is the limit for you mate. Another great review, mate! I can't give it anything else but a 0 out 10. But that's because I am allergic. The wife says a 7.5 out of 10, due the fact that there is no beef dripping chips. It would be nice to see some more variety in this content. It's always just fish and chips, breakfasts, steak, roasts or curries.
Got different places on itenary. Remember, I try to go to a lot of places that my subscribers recommend. I've got a Thai place on the list very soon.
PS. I've also done Burgers, Pizzas, Local produce reviews and Deli's recently!

I have tried this place ..first place so far that you have reviewed. That i have been to .
9 is a great score . Im always positive and i was leaning to the 8 for my experience . Again just because the unlimited chips i found cooked but no crsip in mine . They told me its due to not being able to fry them quick enough while trying to change the oil fast enough and reheat . But the fish . The condiments ect are very nice . They are so so busy id like to see them extend into next door with extra fryers and personaly id like just a tiny tiny bit more space . As in i felt in several peoples space ..but fast and nice staff . Looks great inside and out .
Very clean food . Great prices for a sit down meal .
I type to much but was really fun as i have been there twice so thank you .

I have never tried curry sauce or mushy peas (although I love non-mushy peas!) so it's tartar sauce for me all day long! These fish & chip videos kill me, Gary, because I am the only one in my family who likes fish! Consequently, it has literally been over 2 decades since I've had a lovely fish dinner. *sigh* Still keeping fingers crossed that I'll make it to your country before too long. Will definitely seek out some of your recommended fish & chips places!❤😊

Friday night, fish&chips ❤ Once i saw the name,wife & i hooked 😊 Our son Freddy❤.Thought it was a small local chippy. Pow go through the door,TARDIS 😮(the new brighter, cleaner one 😂) A very neat,tight menu.covered the best of the chippy world Both the fish&chips looked fine.The tail cut was a good size& the batter had a good crunch.Now some people, it takes all sorts, prefer " clumpy chips."It wouldn't be me without a small observation or two.Unlimited chips,may i say. If it were me& Mr Creosote they'd go broke.Most people,shy away from looking greedy 😮 The crusty baguette/ French Stick looked fabulous,only not with fish&chips 😢 White sliced,you can't make a butty with anything else. Nothing like having fish and chips at the seaside - although I am bias as i live on the SE Coast. Have to admit I do find most chip shop chips are not crisp crisp, but generally have a good flavour. That cod looked excellent, is curry sauce a thing it looks rather artifical.

It just proves we are being taken for a ride on the price of chips in the majority of places.
The cod looked scrumptious, all in all a very good value meal and cheaper than the vast majority of places charge for takeaway.

Greeting from Oz. I really, really enjoyed this review for a number of reasons. Bournemouth is the stomping ground of my very good mate, and I shall be forwarding this info onto him. He is intolerant of gluten (and of me 😊), so should find that option right up his alley.
I liked the style of the Chez Fred, and you mentioned 'clean' (an absolute must for me). I don't recall you mentioning service, other than the 20 minute wait. Was the service good too?
To be perfectly honest, I have never seen mushy peas nor curry gravy with fish and chips as an option in Australia. And I'm not at all sure why that is. Seems a good idea to me.
9/10 - Not harsh at all. IMO you were slightly generous. Crispy chips are an absolute must. Offering an unlimited serving of chips lifts the level of expectation of perfection. Perhaps I'm being harsh? But I don't think so.
Mush peas that I've seen in your other reviews have all been more runny. Personally I didn't mind the look of the thicker pea sauce. Seems to me they would be easier to manage in that perilous journey to the mouth.

Looks lovely but whats with the bread? It should be a a cob/teacake/roll/sliced bread. I've never seen a baguette with fish and chips. Maybe it is because Bournemouth is close to France?

I prefer my mushy peas stodgy . Chippy chips are pot luck they could be soggy or nice and crispy , as looks like your chips came straight out of the fryer hence not crispy Gary . Also that was cheap for what you had some places for lunch can cost £20 + .
