I've been to Kentucky and West Virginia, the heartland of Bluegrass, and you're talent and skill at singing and playing are as good as any I've heard here in the US. I'm also intrigued by the hauntingly beautiful fiddle sound from the Chinese stringed instrument played in your old band.
Thank you for sharing your story! We adopted our youngest daughter from China. We traveled there in 2016. So China holds a special place in our hearts. I like hearing about real personal stories of people living in China.
It’s great to know that someone’s life forever changed for the much better because of folks like you. Sometimes when I look at people adopted from China and thought, my god, you don’t know how lucky you are…
@@danielx40 she changed our lives for the better too. Thank you for your kind words but it's not that she's lucky to have us, actually we are lucky to have one another. We are very blessed to have this opportunity.
I smile as I listen to your adventures in music. Your music is lovely. And I enjoy BlueGrass. My adventures are reversed. I love Tai Chi and I teach Tai Chi, but Americans are not so good at it, and only true Chinese masters can share their best talent. I use RUclips videos to learn more, as it is unlikely that I could ever travel to China and get a quality education. I am thankful for the videos. I understand how hard you had to work to find a source of music examples.
Very interesting and informative, Eric. Thank you. Your bluegrass treatment of American country and folk music is impressive and enjoyable, and I hope your RUclips channel continues to grow. 👍
I should be going to bed now, it’s 2am in the morning here. My baby was up just a bit ago, and I was singing Randy Travis to him to go to sleep. I have wanted to play the banjo for a long time (one has been sitting in my closet for a long time). Anyway, I was looking to see if there were any good Randy Travis covers on banjo that would inspire me to start practicing, and I came across your channel. Your covers are so good. Your story is also very interesting. Please keep doing your thing. You brought a lot of joy to me tonight. And I pulled the banjo out of the closet 👍Love and good wishes from Arizona. ❤🌵 p.s start a pattern or something. People love supporting other people who aren’t afraid to be themselves.
I have recently stumbled upon your videos and I have enjoyed all I have viewed so far. I just wanted to say thank you to you and your band for sharing your talents! This video has answered some of my questions but I have some that I would like to ask if that would be ok. Is Celtic music an interest of yours as well? Have you been to the states to share your talent? Who are some of the artists that have inspired you? May all be well and I look forward to seeing more from you! Love & Laughter to you and yours from across the big pond! 🎉
Thanks for your comment, I love Celtic and Irish music as much as I love bluegrass, I haven't officially performed in the US. I'm inspired by almost all country musicians, especially Alison Krauss. The banjo players who have had a greater influence on me are John Hartford and Jens Kruger. Happy New Year!Best Wishes!
I appreciate your interpretations of American music. I especially enjoy how your band incorporates traditional Chinese instruments, like the erhu, in your music. Bravo!
The city of Dali between the tall mountains and a beautiful lake and the historic city was one of my favorite places to visit in Yunan. Your bluegrass interpretation with traditional Chinese instruments is very good.
I stumbled upon the "Jambalaya" the other day and was truly amazed and dumbfounded to see a Chinese blue grass band. The video was excellent by the way. I know that John Denver took Japan by storm some time back and most of the Japanese are now hooked on country music. I just watched Amarillo and this video. Yes, the english needs to be improved but the heart and enthusiasm are there. Keep up the good work.
Bluegrass is amazing music and you and your family are doing something you seem to enjoy. That’s the most important thing. And you’re doing a wonderful job with it. Recently, I went back and realized I was missing out because there was a branch of country music that’s pure as can be called Western Swing (Texas Swing). I found out there was a man that passed away a while back that brought it along from its disintegrating roots, covering Bob Wills and more. His name was Bobby Flores. He spent a lot of time teaching others, so he didn’t leave Texas much. He sings well and plays well too, mostly the fiddle. Thank you for your videos.
Thank you for making this interesting vlog, Mr. Shi. I am happy that you are working so hard to bring bluegrass to China. Best of luck in your important work, and best wishes to your family!
That scenery around you in Dali has fascinated me as I wasn’t aware of the greenery content; I expected snow capped peaks or the desert peaks such as the Tien Shan range. Very unique and extremely large mountains in your background are unbelievably stunning. I can understand why it influences your musical creativity.
Hello Eric, I watched two of your videos and I instantly fell in love with your music. Mixing oriental Chinese music and American bluegrass is beautiful. You are all very talented and I am a fan of your style. I wish you continued success in producing such beautiful songs and thank you for discovering you. I am from Quebec, Canada.
Thanks for the Vlog, very informative to hear how you discovered Country and Bluegrass music. Yes, keep the Vlogs and the music coming. Chinese vlogs with English subtitles is just fine! Watching, listening and appreciating from here in Canada. 🇨🇦
So interesting to hear how you learned bluegrass. It's a niche genre even in the United States. I hope your RUclips channel gets more viewers, your performances with your old band mixing in traditional Chinese instruments are wonderful to watch, and your love for the music is obvious. I hope you can find other like-minded musicians in Dali to play with, and also that you some opportunities to vist your mates in Zhezhang and Shanghai to play from time to time.
I just watched this with my wife. She's Chinese American and a fan of country and folk music, so your videos are something we both enjoy. (Though we couldn't figure out what you'd translated as "bayonet" CDs. Did you mean "bootleg"?) To me, the best part of RUclips is finding people sharing their passion for something I never knew about or maybe just never appreciated. Sometime those channels are popular and sometimes they haven't found their audience yet. Let me know if you need any assistance with airfare to IBMA this year.
Happy New Year! I'm very glad to hear that both you and your wife are interested in my videos. Regarding "bayonet" CDs, I looked it up online and the translation is incorrect. The correct translation should be "cracked" CDs,not bootleg but smuggled. If we ever go to a bluegrass event in America, I’ll tell everyone. Maybe we can meet there.
@@ericshi2472 Eric you must go, and bring Jing Ding. She is that good!! And after USA do Europe. I live in the north, but would definitely consider going a long way to hear you live!
Love the vlog. It is so interesting to get your perspective on American Bluegrass and Country music. I also love seeing the scenery there. From a fellow George Strait fan in Texas:)
Hello from upstate New York! I enjoyed hearing your music over the last few months. I hope you can make more musical connections in Dali to keep progressing there. I always wanted to visit Yunnan. I had to make do with eating Yunnan cuisine whenever I could while I lived in in China for 4 years. I really enjoyed the people and the historical sites I visited in China but never made it to Dali. Anyway, it is great people like you who bring art and facilitate cultural exchange which is very important. Keep up the good work and keep making vlogs.
I love your music, Eric! I play the mandolin, but I also play a little guitar and my husband’s aunt gave me a banjo and I have yet to learn that. I have loved bluegrass music since I was a child and my favorite banjo player is Jens Kruger. Check out the Kruger Brothers, they will have songs you know and perhaps new ones. You should get in touch with them if you come to America, I think they’d love to meet you!
Thanks! Happy New Year to you and your family!Jens Kruger is one of my favorite banjo players, I met him at an IBMA event in 2017 and he is pretty much the best banjo musician I have ever seen. I hope to have the opportunity to meet him again and learn from him
Eric, I very much enjoy your music! It is good to see your smiling face on the vlog! I also appreciated Jambalaya, with Betsy and Ding (? I think her name is spelled right). You are obviously a talented and skilled musician. Years ago I used to watch Center Stage here in America, which was a showcase for Chinese musicians. Always enjoyed the Chinese instruments, and to hear you play bluegrass is outstanding! You are likely aware of many American bluegrass groups; here is an excellent family I just came across. "Southern Raised": ruclips.net/video/kFMUlUkNiRk/видео.htmlfeature=shared. I hope American bluegrass players are contacting you, and that you can perform with some of your favorites. All the best to you and your family!
On behalf of Betsy and Ding, I would like to express my gratitude. I'm glad you like my music and videos. I will try my best to find Chinese instrumentalists again in the New Year to create a bluegrass video with. Best wishes and Happy New Year
Do you know that the most popular bluegrass music on RUclips are from you guys? This is a great testament that when it comes to music, people are open minded. When a Chinese band surpassed Americans (Texans particularly), people don’t become gatekeepers of their tradition, but accepted it and celebrated it. It’s really interesting to watch a Chinese band doing American music better than Texans, and Texans are cheering for it. It’s like watching Eminem out rap people that invented rap. And how the hell are you singing that well but don’t speak the language? Just how the hell!!!😅
Thanks for sharing your backstory. Your son may end up a better player than you! Keep making music. Perhaps you can find a Yangqin player and add hammered dulcimer to the group.
Hello from Ohio USA. I just discovered your RUclips channel this week. I really like your music. I am in my 50s and just attended my first two bluegrass concerts in my life last year.
