Painting FLOWERS all week ✶ Week 02 of

  • For week two I decided to focus on drawing and painting flowers. I struggle to see subtle differences in reds and yellows so this was a real challenge! I focused on breaking down the forms into simple shapes to learn the structure of the flowers. #gouache

Sarah, I enjoy watching your peaceful videos no matter the subject. You are so gracious. Today I have advice for you…. Take a nap! It’s spring and maybe you have Spring Fever? At any rate, just lay your head down and enjoy a nap. When you wake up I bet you’ll feel better. If not, take another nap. Maybe there will be a beautiful flower floating around in you head and you’ll know exactly how you want to paint it.

I couldn't hear Akira purring because my own cat was lying in my arms purring away 🥰. Phil's got it all worked out! All the drawings and paintings were lovely, but the dried thistle was particularly captivating. I like how even in a small sketch you will paint a cast shadow to give dimensionality and enliven the subject.

Flowers are much easier if you study a little basic botany. Learn the parts of a flower, the classes of petal arrangement, etc. That eliminates the overwhelm and gives you a solid place to begin. Notice how the leaves are arranged on the stem. Even the leaves have classes of shapes. Some plants have SQUARE stems! Etc. This plan of attack increases the speed at which you can draw. You already know how color is affected by the angle at which it strikes an object. This is where science and art intersect. It makes for a wonderful marriage of skills. I am not a botanist but as a scientific illustrator, I enjoy the curiosity and exploration of our natural world in the microcosm of our own natural space. The small is often more breath-taking than the grand. So happy to watch your journey. ☮️❤️🙏🏻

I love flowers too and they’re easier from far away but when you want to do a detailed flower, it’s just as hard as doing a portrait. Because if you get one little curve of a pedal wrong, the whole thing looks off. Just like if you get somebody’s nose off a little, the whole thing looks off. So it’s not a fun thing for me to do but I continue to try to learn both portraiture and flower painting. Because yes like you my first love is landscape. I don’t understand how people can think landscape is hard compared to the other two. But everybody has their forte.

Flowers are really tough to paint, especially if you're doing them from observation, instead of in a formulaic always-paint-roses-using-these-three-strokes kind of way, and that's why I think people like Fantin-Latour were so admired for their flower paintings. It was an entire genre and there were flower specialist painters in the 17th century, whose work is still appreciated as being masterful in conception and execution. You handled the second set of flowers on the shrub really well, I thought, because you found the perfect brushwork to use to express the light and shade play on them with a light and spontaneous touch. From trying to paint flowers myself sometimes I find that my intense focus can ruin the bloom, as surely as if I had physically crushed the flower, because the lines and colours in flowers need to look light and delicate. It's a very tiring activity painting, but so engaging, and I bet the group all enjoyed the day.

Sarah, have you ever considered entering Sky Arts TV, “Landscape Artist of the Year” competition? Anyone can enter, but it’s mostly entered by UK artists, of course, because of travel distances. They get many thousands of entries (and also produce the “Portrait Artist of the Year.”) But you have built of a very solid body of work and are a real PRO and could definitely compete with all the other talented artists. I love both programs, but the landscape show is def my fave ❤ I figure you’ve likely watched the shows? 😊 Various YT channels rebroadcast the shows for U.S. viewers. Thanks for all you do! #LAOTY

Hi, Sarah! _"I'm obsessed wit this tree!"_
Silver birch trees do that to me!!!
_"As artists, we are life-long students."_
Yes. after 27 years, I still have sooo much to learn!
The man with the trolley? It's reassuring to see someone else use one! Mine has been a genuine game -changer since circumstances have kept me to urban sketching instead of wide-open landscapes. All my kit (even large parasol / umbrella) goes inside, though, except for the messenger bag. That has the (slightly larger than bum-bag) grab-and-go bag, A5 sketch book (those in the grab-and-go are A6) small drawing board, and various brush pens. That bag goes pretty much everywhere with me, and has all I really need for working small (up to A4) The other kit is my full-size kit, with bigger brushes, paper, drawing board, full-pan paint box, etc. plus lunch, flasks, water. The chair fastens on the back.
Akiva purring? Definitely fine with me! 🤗
Japanese quince? ! 😄 It is stunning!!!!
And last, but should be first: your beautiful drawings, especially those with the grey and white on the toned paper.
I hope you're going to have glorious weather and a very happy time with your friends on Skye!!!!

Hi Sarah, waited happily for your weekly update. Love Phills set up, and also yours. Trying to get outside to look, but like in Scotland Denmarks weather is not exactly encouraging. I'm weak, ill stay inside. But now i listen to your video (2nd time) and found a reference photo and set a goal for sketching for 13 minutes 50 seconds ;-) Love the castle tour, (and i only need like 15 min on a bike to get to something like that, why cant I kick myself out the door and GO. Also 10 min bike ride and then i reach the forest. Maybe it will be my spring goal, exercise and plein air.
Time to restart the video and start sketching ;-)

I think the flowers are absolutely beautiful. My white dogwood that blossomed “lime green” is just now turning white …and it’s so beautiful. … but my only problem …is that the Stillman Birn nova series with the beige color paper seems to warp and buckle ..with gouache at full strength, or , with my watercolors. I’m sure it has a direct correlation with the amount of water I’m using, but even at full undiluted strength gouache .. I’m still getting buckling and warping. I believe the gsm is 150 on these sketchbooks.. I’m wondering if they sell a higher gsm sketchbook with the beige paper? I’ve not been able to find one. Thoughts or tips are greatly appreciated.
