PLEINAIRPRIL STUDY GUIDE 🐱 Meet my new kitten

- Each year I partake in a month-long challenge called "Plein Air April" (shortened to #PleinAirpril on social media) - painting outside every day during April. Combining my loving for plein air with the excitement of spring is the perfect way to shake off the winter cobwebs and start the plein air season right! With the understanding that my April will be very busy, I'm going to use the #PleinAirpril as a way to 'ease into' the plein air season. Since I'll be at home a lot and not adventuring all over the highlands like last year, I've come up with a study plan that will allow me some flexibility - but most importantly focus on aspects of plein air that I struggle with. I hope you will join me in this challenge and use my study guide to stay inspired! More info on the blog. Let's be honest though, you're really just here for the kitten.

I wanted to give a try to this challenge last year but then I realized that because I work full time, the first time I can paint is somewhere between 8 and 9 pm and it is dark then. My lunchbreak is not long enough for paint and eat (and running errands if I have to, and a lot of time I do). I also can't really get into the zone when I am sketching outside, I subconsciously monitor my surroundings all the time (in crowded places I have to look out for thieves and pickpockets, in lonely places for everything else, even if I live in a generally and relatively safe city). I really want to give it a try and sketch with something else outside than just one pencil, but currently all I can see are the obstacles and difficulties.
We’ve missed you, Sarah! Happy to see your smiling face and more of Akita😻
Thanks for the PleinAirpril inspo!🫶
Oh I like the kind of video, to see you talking with us but also watch a creative process. Hope that pleinairpril will be the "kick in my a.." to start with sketching/painting again😅🙏 thank you Sarah and extra kuddles to the kitty kitten😻
Hats off to all of you who do these challenges. I know there is no point even trying for me. I like to do my own thing and can't be constrained by having to do "x" every day. I'm sure the benefits are enormous and it would "do me good", but there's lots of ways to do things, and it's good to know when something is definitely not for you. I do love seeing your results, Sarah. Akira is super cute, enjoy kittenhood, it's over so quickly.
I start to think that these monthly challenges are for teenagers having plenty of time after school, for people who have art related jobs and therefore they are already drawing all day, every day, so one small additional piece might be in, or for people who have a part-time job at most. With a full time job, commute, household, etc, it is very tight already without the extra task each day. Even with supporting family.
@@katalinelo8011 i don't know how anyone with a full time job and a family finds time to make art at all. In fact, there are many artists, particularly women, who stop making art for decades before they finally have some time to devote to art. I think there are a lot of people who start these challenges with enthusiasm, but soon drop out. For those who really benefit and can stick it out I'm sure it's a wonderful, if somewhat taxing, experience. Even when I was at school and the art class task was to paint "x", I'd find myself painting "y" if the task didn't inspire me.
Thank you for being so encouraging and supportive
Such a great way to do pleinairpril! I love the structure of each week, yet it all has the flexibility to do what we want to paint. Great tips and thank you for this video! (also Akira is adorable)
Sounds like fun. I would love to participate but don’t know if I will be able to paint every day but I will try. Your new kitty has the most beautiful blue eyes.
If you feel like joining, just do what you can :)
And remember that 'critique' is NOT THE SAME as 'critical'. A critique is "a careful judgment in which you give your opinion about what works well or what doesn't work so well in categories such as composition or overall tonality." As an example, you see that the mountain in the background is over-balancing the composition somewhat and it may be due to size OR to colour OR placement. What it is NOT is 'an ugly mountain' which slams it with an emotive response which can be dismissive and hurtful and is most certainly not useful. When your aim is to make 'better art' a neutral critical gaze makes note of what works well or what could use improving and is immensely useful.
Yes absolutely
Thank you, you are always such a inspiration. Love you new baby!!🐾❤️🐾🖌️😄
Thank you as always. Your new kitty is just gorgeous.
Excited to join your pleinairpril. 🥶 ready for the outdoors
I'm so jealous, lol. When my daughter and I went to Scotland that was the one place we didn't have time to see. 😍
I'm late to this... been in Italy. Pleinaipril sounds challenging for me, but I'll have a look, that is if it's still available. Your seascape with rocks in the foreground is stunning. Do you always use off-white paper? I'll check your supplies list. Akira is sweet! And I got a glimpse of your tatts, they look like there's special significance. I'm 73, got my first, probably only, tattoo in my 70th year, to honour my son. He had beautiful ones, each with a story. He said they were art. He was an artist, among other wonderful things.

Thank you Sarah!! You got me very excited for plenApril!!!
I think I'm going to go for it this year! I'm so excited to get out there, though April where I live (South Carolina) has gorgeous scenery and flowers everywhere, I also am usually sneezing my head off because of the beautiful flowers everywhere 😆 I'm going to try though! Thanks for the inspo, Sarah!
I have heard N and S Carolina is gorgeous. Maybe someday I'll make a roadtrip through! Wolfy and I want to visit my dad in NY then do a long roadtrip to the west coast, and go to different places along the way so I can paint
Sarah I have never painted outside, so I will give it a go. I am enjoying the monthly boxes and can’t wait for the next one.
Beautiful painting! Beautiful kitten!
I love the way you formatted this with a painting to watch on the side. I'm so tempted to join some of pleinairpril!
Always love your videos and always 🎉🎉get inspired 🎉🎉🎉
I wish PleinApril was in May, when we have better weather lol. I’m going to check out your guide and might go through it inside in April… and redo it later outside 😂. Love the idea of having a guide to follow… thanks so much for preparing it!!
True! But I like to look at April as a time for starting a routine, plan, habit, then I'm well ready to enjoy May's bounty
Faith, weather is also challenging here in Colorado in April, but we will hang in there and do what we can, yes?! 😍
Can't wait for PleinAirpril! I'm going to really try to participate. I really like your study guide and plans for this year because you don't make it seem so daunting and intense. Also, love the video format of talking alongside painting. And, of course, love your new boy!
So happy for your new addition. Good luck trying to paint with your new studio helper! I have a four-month-old kitten who loves to paint!😅
I'm going to have to keep my door shut 😅
Beautiful
Loved following your PlenApril posts last year!
They are *GORGEOUS* ☺☺
So inspiring Sarah! Thanks so much! BTW, love your painting ❤❤❤
Akira is a doll baby❣️ Congratulations! How is Floki getting on with him? I am soooo excited for this challenge! I rarely post any of my work, but a livestream to share successes and challenges sounds fun. I work outside, so on the surface this challenge seems like a no-brainer. But Art time is a struggle for me since I work with animals ( they do not respect the clock😄) so I am really looking forward to being challenged by the commitment it will take. Thank you so much, Sarah for YOUR time commitment to this challenge. 🩵
Beautiful painting
So many great ideas ❤
Love this. Beautiful kitty!
Can ‘t commit to the challenge, but have committed to doing some type of art daily at age 76. Have so may ideas and just hope I can get to most of them.
I did do my 1st Plein air watercolor yesterday right in my own back yard.
Wow great job! I love painting in my own garden and neighborhood. It's very relaxing.
Okeydoke! I’m excited 🎉 I didn’t even remember about pleinairpril!
Kitteh ❤ 😊
Congrats on the new kitty!!!! So happy for you and your family! 🐈 🐈⬛ ❤ Thank you as always for the gouachey inspiration! My life is too chaotic for Plein April this year, but hoping to start next year. 🙏🏻
great idea for week 1, no art is bad, only a learning experience
😀
Welcome back and hello Akira
Akira is adorable! Looking forward to joining in with you - thanks for the motivation!
I hope it helps rekindle your joy of creating!
Congrats on the addition of Akira to the family! I’m starting PleinAirpril in Tallinn! :) Looking forward to following you the next month, Sarah!
Kittyyyyy 😂.
I did not know about PleinAirpril. This is the first time I hear about it. Thanks!
Will try this. I live in southwestern AZ so mid to late April it starts to get to be 97 to 100 degrees. Right now everything is blooming. I did the Oiltober challenge last fall with oil painting every day. (I posted weekly progress reports on my channel , ZenKittyStudio). Yes, you are right we are not deliberately creating masterpieces during these challenges, but it is fun and gets your creative juices moving.
Oiltober..love that name 😂
Sounds like a fun challenge.
Happy new baby meezer! I'm on my second duo, now cozy old nappers.
Our older boy Floki is getting reminded of the fast life! 😂
OK this year I'll join the movement! Hope to be able to do it every day 😅 bit of anxiety but has you say... that's not a competition ! 😊
Excited for plein airpril
I wanna join
This is going to make my day! 😊. I’m so glad you have a new kitten. Best of luck with him..and to your precious Floki. I loved seeing the chin chatter video clip on Instagram. We used to have a cat that did a lot of Chin- chattering …and it’s just so much fun. Congratulations on the adoption. I hope you have many years of love and fun and Floki too.. with this new brother kitten.
He's such a joy! And kittenhood goes by quick
@@SarahBurnsStudio I just did my first day 1 PleinApril…pink Dogwood buds in my backyard..added to my Instagram ❤️.. I have no idea if I will do the whole month or not but it was fun
Akira is adorable. I love meezers. Plein air scares me, but I may try to at least do a little this year. I love looking at the way the different light changes the way the lake looks (fortunate to have an amazing view out my window)
That sounds lovely!
Ok, I am contemplating plein air April! I just got a new watercolour palette and it would be good to thoroughly try it out. It’s autumn here and I’ve been waking up to sunrises here … if I could paint corners of sky from my back verandah without getting out of my robe, I just might do that…. Otherwise it’ll be some other focus…
That is a great idea. You can try so many different color combinations and effects from a single view (and be comfortable 😄 )
I'd love to participate in this challenge... that will be awesome to pain out side! I love this plan! ❤
I like this idea of how to approach Pein Airpril. I am planning on giving it a go this year for the first time. I have done some sketching outside a couple of times this month (freezing my fingers) to get a feel for it again. I have really enjoyed the process even if I don't care for what I've drawn. I am not currently planning on using paint either as I don't feel as confident with it so I want to work on my drawing and inking skills.
Akira is adorable! Kittens definitely add some spice to life. :)
Yea, customize it as much as you need!
Adventure kitten! You might not get much painting done but you could bring them with you to sketch 😆
Wow! Lovely painting! Would like to try this challenge- hopefully I’ll last at least a couple of weeks!
Just do what you can :)
This was so much fun to watch! All that was missing was the crab dance (pardon me - the Zoidberg sidestep). 😂
😂
I will sketch in public but painting gives me anxiety because I don’t want people to stop and watch
Find somewhere private that peope don't walk near, they usually don't go 'off the path' or out of their way
@@SarahBurnsStudiook I’ll give it a shot ❤
It’s quite entertaining to do deliberately appallingly bad paintings and see what they do. It helps get you over the anxiety of talking to strangers and being ‘judged’. You know that you are doing bad work. It takes the pressure off.
Or take a very few supplies and a restrictive list of incompatible instructions that you have to include. Because the goal then is to just make something with what you have and not be distracted by trying to make something perfect. And the people walking by have no idea what you are working on so it really doesn’t matter what they say. It’s about this random challenge you have set yourself.
Lol, me too😅
Sounds like you have a plan. Cute, kitten, Akura. Do you still have your other cat? Have a beautiful month coming up. It sounds like you had a long Winter. Winter here in PA flew by. Thankfully we had a normal Winter. It was too warm and dry last year. We all had severe bee invasions. Take care.
Yes we still have Floki. It's taken a few weeks but they are finally becoming friendly :)
A bluepoint siamese…. I have one to… she’s called Cleo… from Cleopatra
I've done the Strada monthly challenge before and it was one of the best things I've ever done for my art practice, even though 95% of what I did was still life and not outdoors. But the discipline and challenge to come up with subject matter to keep my interest were really beneficial. I think your ideas for how to approach it are wonderful and I may even give it a go. One thing that stood out to me while watching this video (aside from that handsome cat) was how much it is evident that you are totally ready to teach a workshop. I envy your participants.
One question not really related: where do you buy your Daler Rowney gouache?
I love following the strada challenge, I have found a lot of amazing artists that way! And it really inspires me.
I do plan on starting to teach workshops this year - just a couple of small ones later in summer. And next year at least one in France which is more like a big art retreat. It's time for the next challenge!
I buy my gouache from SAA
Hey! Your breed is going to be one of the most mischievous yet adventurous kitties ever! Maybe.. Get kitty a harness walking outdoors asap. What a great combo to have kitty exploring and stimulated but safe. Is it an oriental shorthair or Siamese? Younger so ears haven’t the telltale shape yet.
He's a blue point siamise..only just 13 weeks and growing so fast!
Oooh yes a harness is a great idea and Siamese are good with those. My sister had an adventurous cat which happily travelled around in the car and went on holiday. We even took it to the beach one time, the cat loved it but it was very odd seeing a cat on a beach!!
Good Morning Sarah, I love your videos, art and channel. I was wondering if you could give me advice. I have extreme mobility issues. I can not stand for more the 5 mins, and I can not walk more the 20 feet with out sitting down. Going out Plein Air Painting is quite impossible for me. Do you have any advise about how to approach this dilemma?
Still life is an amazing way to gain proficiency in observational painting, honestly I should do it more often. Fruit, flowers, meaningful objects, whatever - set it up in different types of light and paint it
I would have loved to seen this live but 10 on Sunday morning is just the worst time for me to get on RUclips.
Do you have house plants? Can they be used for days you can't go outside?
Hi Sarah. Please can you tell me what white you're using in this painting? Thank you.
Daler Rowney permanent white
i also had one her name
was mewko
😢😢😢
id love to join the discord but i cant find a link anywhere 😭 can anyone help me out ?
Named for Akira Kurosawa?
My husband recommended the name Akira which I loved. Later found out it's inspired by Akira Toriyama, his childhood hero ☺ (afterwards we found out he recently passed away)
Monet was colour blind
I tried your Discord link in your blog and it’s not working. Says it’s expired. 😢
Perhaps try reloading your browser? It seems to be working on my end
@@SarahBurnsStudio I tried that and now it says when I sign in that the email has been taken. Which it has, by me when I signed up for Discord.
I'll look into it. I'm sure the interwebs has the answers. ☺
@@SarahBurnsStudio I’m in! Apparently clicking on the link wasn’t going through all the way but copying the link and pasting it in Discord worked just fine. Go figure, right? 🤷🏼♀️
How do we connect on discord?
In the blog post there is a link to discord. You have to make an account after you open it.
🤦🏽♀️ found it. Thanks!
Won’t be there this time, ma’am, but the kitty is beautiful.
I hope it brings y’all happiness.
Be safe. 🇺🇸
