Overseer: “Wow, I didn’t expect you back this quickly. So, you found the water chip?” Vault Dweller: “No but I did nuke the most powerful destructive force in the wasteland I had no idea existed prior.”
I like how they legit didn’t think anyone would do this, so they didn’t program in the need to have gotten the waterchip before you could beat the game. But hey, that just adds another level of freedom this game offers you. It’s one of the best, in that regard.
Actually, there's even more to the freedom the game gives you. While it may not be like in Fallout 2 (an option to continue playing the game when you finished it, with additional dialogue, an easter egg etc.), you may actually finish all main quests (Water Chip, and Mutants' Base/Mutants' Leader) and receive XP for all of them, including the last one you'll perform (normally you would "lose" the the XP for the last quest, since it would be already game over) WITHOUT the game ending.. and more. When you do the last main quest, you'll be automatically moved to the starting cave, but then... either run away (if Jacoren/Overseen didn't appear), or to be fully safe, go into manual combat mode (spam A, move all hexes, spam A again to remain in combat) and exit the cave in combat (that's the safest version, can actually exit combat earlier). At this moment you'll be able to continue playing the game and do everything what you'd like (including getting back to Valut 13 cave if some time passed), with one exception - talking to Overseer at Level 3 of Vault 13. That action triggers the same dialogue that would normally be initiated in the Vault 13 cave, even if he's setting in his pedestal, so do so only when you really want to end the game. But besides that - full freedom.
PLANET23K That’s great and all, but I simply said the game gave you a lot of freedom, including the freedom to finish the game within 20 minutes, whether on purpose or by accident on the side of the designers, I didn’t say that it gave you more freedom than Fallout 2.
