- More than 300 years in the future, society has been transformed by new technology, leading to human bodies being interchangeable and death no longer being permanent. Takeshi Kovacs is the only surviving soldier of a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned for centuries until impossibly wealthy businessman Laurens Bancroft offers him the chance to live again.

What makes me curious about this series is how there are time skips of hundreds of years, yet technology seem to remain at the same level.

Different tech reaches a peak at a certain point. King Tut's dagger was constructed over 3300 years ago from meteoric iron (essentially Iron-nickel-cobalt stainless steel) which shows no major signs of rust and still has a sharp edge.

Maybe the progress was intentionally slowed down. If technology becomes too advance it can also became more spread, powerful people would probably want to either hoard all advanced tech or juat artificially make the world stuck on the level where they manage everything

i’m really sad that this show is cancelled, i enjoyed it a lot even if there was a bunch of things going on along with the main plot..the last episode i watched made me feel so bitter bcus it didn’t feel finished 🤧💔

I've always thought that recording memories and stuff to live forever is stupid, you don't really live forever, it's just that a copy of your memories gets moved to another body.

I know these synapses miss some details so I was wondering about the personal sense of existence of the brain of the sleeve. I mean, even identical twins, natural clones, who are born and raised “exactly” the same, have their own personalities and ways of internalizing and manipulating the outside world.
once you take inflation into account 100k in 300 years probably isn't much. anyhow still cheaper than maxing a character in Diablo immortal today.

this show is so beautiful, the soundtrack is incredible. when people say they haven't seen it, i feel the need to deep dive like I'm explaining elderscrolls lore. made me cry too many times. then netflix ended it after 2 seasons.

@@Leto85 actually thats whats cool, its just based off the books. Each book is a different person as kovac. His sleeve is just in different bodies. But season 2 ended well. Each season wraps up nicely. Its worth watching. They just decided not to continue because netflix didnt see a rise in veiwers it stayed the same but we never left

u forgot to mention some people dupe stacks to use two bodies at once or if they have high risk of getting killed so that even if their stack breaks they can come back to life

It's the poor that allow that. If people actually rioted there is nothing the rich could do cause all the employees are pretty much poor too so they wouldn't have anyone to protect them and their assets if people actually started to not give a fk

I miss this show more than any other show. It was so amazing.
Season 1 was fantastic and I'm glad it's arc is complete. I have not watched season 2 but I've seen it has a lower rating. Is it good? And is the story complete?
@@fraybirch1930 season 2 sucks , it will make you hate the franchise and glad it got canceled. They spent so much money on hiring Anthony ,they forgot to add story or plot.
@@fraybirch1930 i started season 2 but i couldnt get into the main actor really. I grew to like the first two sleeves. I think i gave the first episode a try and it seemed sort of slow to start. Then the canceled the show, so i never looked back into it.
Thank you both for the answers I'll stay with the first season then. Also now that I have the chance I'd like to recommend Westworld if you haven't seen it. Season 4 just started in HBO.

Altered carbon is the greatest sci-fi futuristic themed movie/series of all time in my opinion.
Altered Carbon was one of my most favorite shows! I really wished that they would have made more seasons.

I'm starting to watch recaps of movies and shows that I've already seen just because Myster Recapped is so good. Hands down the best recap channel out there. Probably mostly because it actually has a real human voiceover and not some dead AI voice. Also, as an added bonus his voice is very satisfying for these kinds of videos.

Just a quick warning, Season 1 was very strong and I would recommend watching it even after this recap. But skip Season 2, you won't be missing anything.
Tbh, the 2nd season does not seem like it was written by the same people at all! It reminded me of a really weak B-movie, trying to deal with a universe and setting far too big for it’s depth.
I was really attached to the s1 sleeve and i cant bear to watch s2 with a different sleeve, it feels like a different person. Not takeshi kovacs anymore.

My only problem with this is he isnt showing some of the incredible opening fight scenes that got me hooked on Altered Carbon. I realize it would increase the video length but PLEASE keep them in

Clone doesn't bring you back live or make you immortal, clone just a copy of you with your memory, the real you is dead for good, basically clone just another human that looks like you, has the same DNA with you that fill with your memories
Basically like reincarnation, it's not you, but continue what you do, think like you and act like you while you are dead for sure

This show was so good. I love a good dystopian Sci-fi.
I never really understood this premise that being immortal through clones (or anything of the kind) like putting your consciousness in a machine for example, being that when the original you dies, you die, you cease to exist, it's not like when you die you would pass control over your clone, after all, clones are not going to make anyone immortal, essentially there is only one other person in the world who looks like you, has your memories, but he is not you and there is no guarantee that he will act the same way you act he can end up being a totally different person, at best a clone would be a kind of twin.
For those who watch these and think “should I watch this one?” I would say altered carbon is a massive yes. Its world building is very consistent and I think if you liked the expanse you would like altered carbon.

What annoys me about franchises like this is that they either don't realise the reality of such technology or don't care. Even if you could record your mind on a chip and put it in a new body, you would not be cheating death. You wouldn't be sucked out of your body and put in a new sleave. YOU would still be dead, the stack would only be capable of creating a COPY of you and that is what would continue to live on.
In the TV show, the technology to recreate humans and implant their memories came from an alien species. Humans did not create it.
