The country depicted in the movie is not actually Japan but an unnamed fictional one, as the ending in the manga shows that the protagonist escapes the regime to a peace loving safe country that is, Japan Also, to be precise, the person selected by lottery will be shunned not only because of a past criminal record, rather committing a criminal act after notification of the Ikigami, because receiving a 24h timer before someone's death pushes them over the edge
Interesting, I didn't know that about the manga. Given that...I don't know Japanese but the English translation of this makes me think that the mangaka was trying to show just how ugly this fictional "other Japan" is by using the word prosperity. If the mangaka is a pacifist, he could be thinking of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere that Japan had until their defeat in World War II, and invoking that to make people feel distaste right away towards that law.
Its a team of people grinding away every day doing their own role. They seem to be super efficient tbh with the rate they are picking movies, translating them, summarising them, narrating and then editing.
Recently the movies y’all had been recapping were iffy, but this one is amazing! I didn’t tear up but I did get sad to see everything unfold how it did. Nice job on capturing the emotion of the movie (along with some funny, witty side jokes). 10/10 movie recap!

For interested people, this is based on a manga with the same name, the manga has 16 unique stories which range from lunatics to beautiful stories. I strongly recommend it.

This is my favorite movie, and you summarized it so well! I teared up just watching this clip, because this movie is really dark and sad throughout until in the end, Sakura regains her vision and her late brother’s kindness for buying her the apartment with the view of cherry blossoms.

The history behind the draft is interesting, while I don't support it's a bit hyperbolic to compare the too unless this is a joke. In the USA it was 1st introduced by Lincoln for ages 21 and up although it existed long before, the war of 1812 was because the English did something called impressment of American sailors where they drafted them because some used to be English. USA didn't take kindly to this. Many eastern European countries and countries around the world have conscription which is compulsory service for everyone not just a lottery.

This movie is probably inspired by Shirley Jackson's The Lottery. It has a very similar concept but this is the modernized version of it.
There is probably an interview with the manga artist who created the original story that would state their inspirations. I'll update if I find it.

If the GOV wanted people to work more and work harder, a better idea would have been to only do this to single people after a certain age, or people without responsibility for another person. So people would feel compelled to have a family and have to work to support them. And single people would be punished in the context of the film for their "selfishness" in being less likely to "join society and procreate and work"
Well that would make single people close to that age just marry another even if they didn't love each other
