I think if you’re in debt and don’t have an emergency fund then owning a pet is a liability. I can see people neglecting their pets because of poor money management. Better to own a pet when you’re financially stable.

For those thinking about daycare: $30 per day is a lot. Try finding a place where you can buy 10-20 days at a discount. Pre-pandemic and since she was 8 weeks old, my border collie went to daycare everyday during the workday. I bought a month of unlimited at a time and it broke down to $15 per day. Also, dont rely on daycare for socialization of a puppy. Daycare behavior is different from everywhere else behavior. You should definitely still be seeking out one on one meetings in a variety of situations for your pup.
Rose, you're very sweet but you're very much underestimating the cost of adopting a dog too. Some shelters go as high as $500-600 for neutered puppies (any breed) and if you want to adopt from specialty rescues, they are often in the thousands as well. If you're looking to adopt but want a specific breed in the future, I recommend looking into rescues that focus on the breed you want.
Maybe where she lives it is at much. Where I am living adoptions never or rarely go above $200 and we looked at adopting a puppy or dog for a while. Ended on a shelter cat that was $30 total because they were doing a special that we didn't know about at the time.
Someone made a comment about TIME. Anyone out there who is thinking about getting a dog and leaving it in a crate while they are at work, should reconsider. To us it’s 8 hours. To a dog, with a much shorter lifespan, it is soooo much longer. Please, please, please do not convince yourself that this is okay. When we consider thinking about taking on a pet we have to consider what type of habitat we are able to provide for that animal and the quality of life we can give them. If you take everything else out of it (stress, lonliness etc), imagine not having a bathroom break for 10+ hours (work + comute), and dogs have smaller bladders. They trust you with everything, its so cruel to not even allow them the dignity of pee-breaks.
I am pro adopt don't shop but I am an experienced dog owner so I could handle behavioral issues that usually comes with dogs from shelters. For a beginner dog owner, I always suggest to buy from a respectable breeder because you can usually predict the behavior of the dog by their breed so all you need to do is research the breed that will be the best fit for you. That being said, I agree 100% with your decision of getting a pure bred. As long as the dog is not from a puppy mill, all is good. All dog deserves to be with a family that will love them their whole life 😊

Maybe it's just me that I'm happy being a "lonely" person, but I have not feeling whatsoever on having kids or pets. Like I have never felt what people with kids or dogs feels. I see kids and pets as liabilities to be honest. I know for everybody is different but me personally, I enjoy investing my money and traveling, no regrets at all.

I like my freedom, money, and traveling to crazy countries around the world, and doing fun things constantly. Could not unless I was a multi-millionaire with children. Congrats on your baby Rose! I’ve had dogs since I’ve been 7 and still do! They’re so loyal n thoughtful. My husband bought me Thor , my 20 months old Rottweiler for over 2gs and we have a 4 year old German Shepard pittbull mix Roxy from the rescue. They are always so sweet, thoughtful, loyal and so worth it. I have their German dog food from Amazon on auto ship and Chewy is amazing!
Hi, Rose. I didn't see this one until now. It's really great that you have 24/7 entertainment these days! I actually have a friend who raises Frenchies. She's been at it for a couple of years now, and if I am to believe her (which I do), celebrities will routinely pay around $20,000 for a dog of this breed, and they are very popular with said celebrities and wealthy people. I especially enjoyed the part where you were talking about training while Jupiter clawed the sofa!
Unconditional love from an animal is a priceless gift. Congratulations on becoming a dog mom! I think it’s an amazing and wonderful gift for you both. Doesn’t have to be a rescue for him needing to be rescued or you for that matter. Love is love and really, why else are we here but to experience it?
I learned from my dog what real commitment and responsibility is. I'm a uni student, and I spend a good chunk of my income on my dog because I truly value her health and wellness over materialistic things I could buy for myself. Kind of like raising a kid I guess?
Oh my gosh soooo cute!!! I just got a frenchie as well during quarantine, he's 5 months now. Absolutely nothing wrong with purchasing from a breeder for this breed- i've gotten two bulldogs from rescues and while it was free to rescue, the irresponsibility and overall ignorance towards the breed in their past homes meant THOUSANDS of dollars in bills. Also, alot of insurance companies refused to accept our adopted bullies because they were older bulldogs & insurance companies know the breed has alot of health issues. Here in Toronto Ontario they range from 3.5-5k for a responsible breeder, we paid 4.8k. As mentioned, I've had three bullies in the past (2 rescues), this frenchie is my first breeder dog and he is absolutely amazing, i've seen the difference paying for ar responsible breeder can make. However I still plan to rescue in the future when I can afford a non-insured pup! Best of luck to you and this cutie!!

I like the breed, I'm passionate about saving dogs from irresponsible breeding/ rehabilitating them back to health , yes I paid thousands in bills but this doesn't mean i've ever been in debt due to any of my dogs - I had a seperate savings account for my dog's bills and i've never been short, thankfullly I've always been deliberate with saving. Also I think anyone who rescues is aware that health bills pour in, especially dogs who were severely abused/miscared for. It's completely expected lol, and its never stopped me. I recently went with a breeder after 10 years of rescuing these beautiful dogs. This is my first breeder experience, and while it seems to certainly be cheaper overall to buy from a breeder, I still plan to continue rescuing after my pup is little older because it's what I'm passionate about! @S W ah yes, I definitely agree with all the points you make. The breed itself is very unatural & "man made" hence their inability to birth naturally & all the other issues. However the breeder was a family friend of mine & was originally going to keep our pup for herself, however due to some circumstances she decided she could not keep it so I bought the dog from her to save her the hassle from finding another family. We lost our last frenchie last year so we were already actively looking to adopt another, this opportunity came up and I took it. Just Hoping to use my experience to better educate myself and others on the importance of learning about the breed & why they have so many issues connected to breeding/breeders. Looking forward to continue my rescue/adoption journey with this breed once the time is right.
Also you didn’t even mention if you live in an apartment they charge $200 for a pet fee per lease and $200 for a deposit per lease agreement. They also can charge per rent like $10-20 per month

$200 is so cheap compared to majority of apartment in Austin, TX. They charge pet deposit and pet fee, each at a minimum $300 so a total of $600. It is literally a rip off and I haven't heard anyone who get back their pet deposit even just 20 bucks when they move out. Yikes
Yes so true!!! Great video. I've had my dog for 8 years and I've calculated Ive spent over $20k only because I live next to the border and most of the surgeries he's had have been there at 1/3 of the cost!
My dogs ate my couch, whole bunch of shoes ( even when I had a crate, leave them for 5 minutes and they looking for troubles). Now my dogs are both 9 years old and of corse it cost extra in rent, deposit and pet fees, 100$ to groom them every 2 month. My cavalier recently got sick and vet needed 500$ for x-ray, pet insurance doesn’t cover everything in fact it does not cover expensive expenses. Not to mention that it is a constant mess, shedding hair, and all kind of getting sick and food sensitivities ( so smaller dogs make less mess). If you think of getting a dog, it’s a huge responsibility and expensive, but lots of love. ❤️
I do agree dogs are very pricey and also if you’re a responsible owner time consuming to train, walk, bathe etc etc. But I’ve had my pup for 6 years now and she’s been with me through some of the hardest times in my life and I truely feel that I would be in a much darker place without her. And in my opinion having her has been priceless for my mental health especially now during these trying times. Enjoy growing with your pup, it’s amazing experience!

Hi Rose! New sub here. I really want to thank you and to let you to know how extremely helpful I found this video to be in my research. Since the pandemic my partner and I have highly considered the possibility of welcoming a new pup into our lives. Because I personally have been a fan of the Frenchie breed for just about the last decade AND I felt like we were in a position financially and lifestyle-wise to do so now, getting a French bulldog seemed like a no brainer. However, after dedicating the first couple of days of the new year coming up with sustainable & measurable goals, creating spreadsheets of our finances and simultaneously falling deep into the web of endless information about the actual cost and responsibilities associated with owning a Frenchie (or puppy in general), although it pains me to say it - right now might not be the best time for us...but this doesn't mean I will give up on the goal to one day become a French bulldog Dad. :) It's information like this that I think considerate and true French bulldog lovers need to know before getting one! PS: Jupie is so cute! Idk where you are but if you live or are ever vacationing in SoCal and need a couple sitters, I got you! I started annual teeth cleaning with a vet for my puggle 5 years ago. The cost started around $400 the first time. The last one, I was billed for around $1K. That cost included anesthesia and few extractions. My family loves our dog. For all the joy she brings, it is not too much.

It doesn’t cost as much as she is saying. I’ve had about 15 dogs over the years. Many things she is listing are not really needed. But I don’t live in a city or apartment so that makes a difference. My dogs can go in to the backyard 24 hours through their dog door and can do their business and run around. The love and health benefits you get are priceless.
Dogs are the most loveable of loveable liabilities. And you don’t need to apologize for getting a dog from a breeder. Knowing what you’re getting ahead of time has a lot of advantages and if you’re willing to spend that kind of cash on a dog you’re obviously invested. Awesome pup and video!
Frenchies have been very popular lately. Dogs truly are great. Not to scare you but frenchies esp. Puppy frenchies are prone to foreign bodies. Becareful of anything he can swallow that won't break down in his stomach. (No socks! ). You did good reaserch, diet can help against later health problems. In a raw diet be sure to add grains to prevent heart issues. Saw 3 french is this week with chf.

I feel you Rose! Animals are so worth it. I got a cat last year and she is my everything. Even though I am on the FIRE movement and all about saving money, I have spent a lot of money on my cat and it was well worth it for my well being. That being said though, you might want to look into another pet insurance. I'm paying $17/mo for 80% coverage and a $250 deductible. The price you quoted seems very high for pet insurance. If you're looking for a cheaper vet as well, try your humane society. Mine gives vaccinations and has vet visits for unbeatable prices. The long lines they have aren't ideal right now though with covid.
Treats and chew sticks in our house are carrots, apples, broccoli, ANY kind of fruit. Also extremely healthy for the dog. Tobasco sauce on lamp cords prevents a lot of damage. ;)

Love love your video! Pet insurance is cheaper when there are young but they will raise it after the pup turns 10 years old. Nationwide charged me $156 a month (like a car payment). Insurance is super limited too. I will just save $70 per month ...in 5 years will be $4000 in a HYA (if you put it in a mutual fund) .. even better. Let your pup invest his own money 🙂🐶 and save for his pup retirement
@@christianalvarez4849 yeah. I paid 2 years and my pup only went twice to the doctor ... once for teeth cleaning.. which wasn't cover and ended up 1k for it. Teeth cleaning is preventive for insurances.. and the second one for tick.. I think I paid the insurance more money. Wish I saved it and just invested or something. So right now my pup will be seating on a nice retirement fund :)
Congratulations on Jupy he’s adorable! I’ve had Frenchies all my life and they’re the best companions for sure. FYI, they’re delicate and I recommend good supplements for maintenance. Frenchies have delicate eyes, hips & joints, skin, yeast overgrowth, and anal glands issues. Specialty breads need a lot of research and insurance will help. My Frenchie takes hip & joint supplements, Onega 3’s for her eyes and skin, and a variety of probiotics, prebiotics, and enzymes. Be careful of Juppy jumping off the bed and couch because Frenchies are prone to spinal chord injuries. Also, my dogs are always fed a 100% raw diet which is a species appropriate diet for dogs. It keeps my dogs out of the vets office. Hope this is helpful and enjoy your pup.

I love my Husky Puppy! He turns 1 this month and only serious cost was medications for Kennel Cough and pet insurance. But he's family and deserves it 😂🐕🐾👍🏾🙏🏾
Never used a create. We installed a dog door and he sleeps on the bed at night.. so no need to lock him in a create in the basement that some people do.
My Jack Russell only cost me $300 when I bought him 15 years ago. The last 1.5 years i've been dropping insane money ($250 per month on medication, $500 on cardiologist every 6 months, special prescription food @ $6 per can, plus other vet emergencies) on his vet bills due to his congestive heart failure diagnosis. My only regret is not buying a good pet insurance plan when he was younger.

This seems to be your first dog so advice from a veteran dog owner, the best way to budget is to shop at discount stores and buy cheap things because things will end up in the trash. Don't waste your money on subscriptions, dogs don't care about those things! Only invest in dog food, treats and shampoo. And don't fall for everything veterinarians tell you!

You're not a worrier - we have medical insurance for employees, kids, car insurance, renters and home insurance, all types of insurance, so why not for your pup too? It only makes sense. :) Note on toys: be VERY careful with household objects as toys for puppies! You mentioned socks - some dogs have a tendency to try to swallow and eat things like that. My german shepherd growing up wouldn't swallow anything except for his dog food and socks. So please, reminder to pet parents to be VERY careful about what you teach your puppy is or is not okay to play with.
Rose dogs are very loyal than us humans in my childhood days I had a german shepherd and a cat and a tortoise was just good fun watching them. my father said never put a price on them if you have pets never look at cost of having them you will get blessed from the universe one day if you believe in cause and effect and good karma. have great journey with your pet with happiness.

Congrats on the new pup, Rose! As someone who owned a male dog in the past, I would highly recommend that you get him neutered (or at least plan for the possibility in the future). Although he may be ok as a young pup, it gets very annoying when he tries to "do the deed" with everything in the house once he gets a bit older. Hopefully that doesn't happen with you, but that's what I've typically seen in my experience
I have two males, an Australian shepherd and a sheltie. I do not believe on cutting of their testicles. It is my responsibility as a caretaker to insure they do not impregnate any females. The good lord gave them testicles not to have humans who are too lazy to prevent their companion animals from unwanted behaviours.

Yes! They ALWAYS have them available in shelters. Frenchies are a commitment so lazy owners give them up. Also breeders take ones they can't sell to the shelter. I frggin hate breeders. Buying a dog is killing one in a shelter, period.

Dogs are SO EXPENSIVE. I've had a labrador retriever for 6 years and he has already cost me $1,500 in pet fees whenever I move. He has ear medicine that prevents ear infections which costs $200, and he is also on steroids because he has a condition that makes him itch like crazy. It costs $80 every time I get him groomed, which I could do myself if he wasn't 90 pounds. Lol I could go on.
I have a little dog for about a year now hes my service dog and its definitely way more responsibility and consistent training than most people realize! it's like having a baby and dogs are not alone animals I never leave mine alone he will be extremely depressed . medical costs etc can be hundreds and thousands randomly. the first time fee for a dog even if thousands is nothing compared to the rest of taking good care of animals afterwards . I hope people can be responsible with animals and be ready to have time patience commitment and can dedicate constant training with dogs ! or get a cat if want to be able to put in much less effort . dogs are actually way more high maintence and need more behavioral training and redirection than cats. dogs are way more misbehaving than cats contrary to what most people believe. dogs are prone to chewing, exploring with their mouths , getting into random stuff, barking, potty accidents, exercise, outdoors, etc... there are many quarantine puppies now and I worry that may are going to face issues when they have to go back to work but the dogs have separation anxiety ! get ready to hire sitters or walkers if no one can be with the dog !
No one should own a pet if he/she cannot afford the expensive veterinary medical cost. I'm tired of seeing a pet dog on animal rescue RUclips channels with a tumor as large as a bowling ball because its owner can't afford the $2K+ medical bill to have it removed or even worse, the dog is abandoned and is left to die on the streets. I had a Labrador Retriever for nearly 12 years before she died of cancer. Before her death, I had spent $5K for surgery and chemotherapy for her cancer. Fortunately, I had pet insurance that paid 80% of the bill after a $200 deductible. The pet insurance premium was $80 per month during my dog's last year of her life. Before I bought pet insurance, my dog tore her ligament around the age of 5, and that cost me about $3500 for surgery to repair the tear. 4 years later, my dog tore her other ligament but fortunately, I had insurance and they paid 80% of $3500 after a $200 deductible. Later, my dog developed lipomas or fatty tumors which cost nearly $1000 to remove. Yes, having a pet is very expensive especially for the medical cost! Don't get a pet if you can't afford to pay for the medical treatments.
Your gonna need a new couch...or a newspaper to swat him or slap against your hand (to get attention-noise). Do not accept digging on your furniture-even once. Or it becomes a habit. Great video! Most people think $20 for food.

Maybe it's just me that I'm happy being a "lonely" person, but I have not feeling whatsoever on having kids or pets. Like I have never felt what people with kids or dogs feels. I see kids and pets as liabilities to be honest. I know for everybody is different but me personally, I enjoy investing my money and traveling, no regrets at all.
Well women feel differently about these things...living things are never a liability, they just require financial planning and commitment.
@@CosmoMakeupgurl I wouldn't say women, just say some women. I'm a woman and in my mid-30s and definitely don't want children. I like my freedom, money, and traveling to crazy countries around the world, and doing fun things constantly. Could not unless I was a multi-millionaire with children. Congrats on your baby Rose! I’ve had dogs since I’ve been 7 and still do! They’re so loyal n thoughtful. My husband bought me Thor , my 20 months old Rottweiler for over 2gs and we have a 4 year old German Shepard pittbull mix Roxy from the rescue. They are always so sweet, thoughtful, loyal and so worth it. I have their German dog food from Amazon on auto ship and Chewy is amazing!
Hi, Rose. I didn't see this one until now. It's really great that you have 24/7 entertainment these days! I actually have a friend who raises Frenchies. She's been at it for a couple of years now, and if I am to believe her (which I do), celebrities will routinely pay around $20,000 for a dog of this breed, and they are very popular with said celebrities and wealthy people. I especially enjoyed the part where you were talking about training while Jupiter clawed the sofa!
Unconditional love from an animal is a priceless gift. Congratulations on becoming a dog mom! I think it’s an amazing and wonderful gift for you both. Doesn’t have to be a rescue for him needing to be rescued or you for that matter. Love is love and really, why else are we here but to experience it?
I learned from my dog what real commitment and responsibility is. I'm a uni student, and I spend a good chunk of my income on my dog because I truly value her health and wellness over materialistic things I could buy for myself. Kind of like raising a kid I guess?
Oh my gosh soooo cute!!! I just got a frenchie as well during quarantine, he's 5 months now. Absolutely nothing wrong with purchasing from a breeder for this breed- i've gotten two bulldogs from rescues and while it was free to rescue, the irresponsibility and overall ignorance towards the breed in their past homes meant THOUSANDS of dollars in bills. Also, alot of insurance companies refused to accept our adopted bullies because they were older bulldogs & insurance companies know the breed has alot of health issues. Here in Toronto Ontario they range from 3.5-5k for a responsible breeder, we paid 4.8k. As mentioned, I've had three bullies in the past (2 rescues), this frenchie is my first breeder dog and he is absolutely amazing, i've seen the difference paying for ar responsible breeder can make. However I still plan to rescue in the future when I can afford a non-insured pup! Best of luck to you and this cutie!!
@S W Why would I ask myself that if its never bothered me? I like the breed, I'm passionate about saving dogs from irresponsible breeding/ rehabilitating them back to health , yes I paid thousands in bills but this doesn't mean i've ever been in debt due to any of my dogs - I had a seperate savings account for my dog's bills and i've never been short, thankfullly I've always been deliberate with saving. Also I think anyone who rescues is aware that health bills pour in, especially dogs who were severely abused/miscared for. It's completely expected lol, and its never stopped me.
I recently went with a breeder after 10 years of rescuing these beautiful dogs. This is my first breeder experience, and while it seems to certainly be cheaper overall to buy from a breeder, I still plan to continue rescuing after my pup is little older because it's what I'm passionate about! @S W ah yes, I definitely agree with all the points you make. The breed itself is very unatural & "man made" hence their inability to birth naturally & all the other issues. However the breeder was a family friend of mine & was originally going to keep our pup for herself, however due to some circumstances she decided she could not keep it so I bought the dog from her to save her the hassle from finding another family. We lost our last frenchie last year so we were already actively looking to adopt another, this opportunity came up and I took it. Just Hoping to use my experience to better educate myself and others on the importance of learning about the breed & why they have so many issues connected to breeding/breeders. Looking forward to continue my rescue/adoption journey with this breed once the time is right.

$200 is so cheap compared to majority of apartment in Austin, TX. They charge pet deposit and pet fee, each at a minimum $300 so a total of $600. It is literally a rip off and I haven't heard anyone who get back their pet deposit even just 20 bucks when they move out. Yikes
Depends on the apt.... I've never had to pay for my cat and they know about him. I've seen some that don't charge that much for dogs either

My dogs ate my couch, whole bunch of shoes ( even when I had a crate, leave them for 5 minutes and they looking for troubles). Now my dogs are both 9 years old and of corse it cost extra in rent, deposit and pet fees, 100$ to groom them every 2 month. My cavalier recently got sick and vet needed 500$ for x-ray, pet insurance doesn’t cover everything in fact it does not cover expensive expenses. Not to mention that it is a constant mess, shedding hair, and all kind of getting sick and food sensitivities ( so smaller dogs make less mess). If you think of getting a dog, it’s a huge responsibility and expensive, but lots of love. ❤️
I do agree dogs are very pricey and also if you’re a responsible owner time consuming to train, walk, bathe etc etc. But I’ve had my pup for 6 years now and she’s been with me through some of the hardest times in my life and I truely feel that I would be in a much darker place without her. And in my opinion having her has been priceless for my mental health especially now during these trying times.

Hi Rose! New sub here. I really want to thank you and to let you to know how extremely helpful I found this video to be in my research. Since the pandemic my partner and I have highly considered the possibility of welcoming a new pup into our lives. Because I personally have been a fan of the Frenchie breed for just about the last decade AND I felt like we were in a position financially and lifestyle-wise to do so now, getting a French bulldog seemed like a no brainer.
However, after dedicating the first couple of days of the new year coming up with sustainable & measurable goals, creating spreadsheets of our finances and simultaneously falling deep into the web of endless information about the actual cost and responsibilities associated with owning a Frenchie (or puppy in general), although it pains me to say it - right now might not be the best time for us...but this doesn't mean I will give up on the goal to one day become a French bulldog Dad. :)
It's information like this that I think considerate and true French bulldog lovers need to know before getting one!

I started annual teeth cleaning with a vet for my puggle 5 years ago. The cost started around $400 the first time. The last one, I was billed for around $1K. That cost included anesthesia and few extractions. My family loves our dog. For all the joy she brings, it is not too much.

It doesn’t cost as much as she is saying. I’ve had about 15 dogs over the years. Many things she is listing are not really needed. But I don’t live in a city or apartment so that makes a difference. My dogs can go in to the backyard 24 hours through their dog door and can do their business and run around. The love and health benefits you get are priceless.

I have a frenchie too! They aren’t cheap but they’re like most other dogs and kids in your life. I wouldn’t change it any other way.
Frenchies have been very popular lately. Dogs truly are great. Not to scare you but frenchies esp. Puppy frenchies are prone to foreign bodies. Becareful of anything he can swallow that won't break down in his stomach. (No socks! ). You did good reaserch, diet can help against later health problems. In a raw diet be sure to add grains to prevent heart issues. Saw 3 french is this week with chf.

I feel you Rose! Animals are so worth it. I got a cat last year and she is my everything. Even though I am on the FIRE movement and all about saving money, I have spent a lot of money on my cat and it was well worth it for my well being. That being said though, you might want to look into another pet insurance. I'm paying $17/mo for 80% coverage and a $250 deductible. The price you quoted seems very high for pet insurance. If you're looking for a cheaper vet as well, try your humane society. Mine gives vaccinations and has vet visits for unbeatable prices. The long lines they have aren't ideal right now though with covid.
Treats and chew sticks in our house are carrots, apples, broccoli, ANY kind of fruit. Also extremely healthy for the dog.

Love love your video! Pet insurance is cheaper when there are young but they will raise it after the pup turns 10 years old. Nationwide charged me $156 a month (like a car payment).

I will just save $70 per month ...in 5 years will be $4000 in a HYA (if you put it in a mutual fund) .. even better. Let your pup invest his own money 🙂🐶 and save for his pup retirement
True, my pet insurance rates keep going up every year. They started at $30 and I'm up to $55/mo and my pup is only 4 years old.

Teeth cleaning is preventive for insurances.. and the second one for tick.. I think I paid the insurance more money. Wish I saved it and just invested or something. So right now my pup will be seating on a nice retirement fund :)
Congratulations on Jupy he’s adorable! I’ve had Frenchies all my life and they’re the best companions for sure. FYI, they’re delicate and I recommend good supplements for maintenance. Frenchies have delicate eyes, hips & joints, skin, yeast overgrowth, and anal glands issues. Specialty breads need a lot of research and insurance will help. My Frenchie takes hip & joint supplements, Onega 3’s for her eyes and skin, and a variety of probiotics, prebiotics, and enzymes. Be careful of Juppy jumping off the bed and couch because Frenchies are prone to spinal chord injuries. Also, my dogs are always fed a 100% raw diet which is a species appropriate diet for dogs. It keeps my dogs out of the vets office. Hope this is helpful and enjoy your pup.

Never used a create. We installed a dog door and he sleeps on the bed at night.. so no need to lock him in a create in the basement that some people do.

My Jack Russell only cost me $300 when I bought him 15 years ago. The last 1.5 years i've been dropping insane money ($250 per month on medication, $500 on cardiologist every 6 months, special prescription food @ $6 per can, plus other vet emergencies) on his vet bills due to his congestive heart failure diagnosis. My only regret is not buying a good pet insurance plan when he was younger.

This seems to be your first dog so advice from a veteran dog owner, the best way to budget is to shop at discount stores and buy cheap things because things will end up in the trash. Don't waste your money on subscriptions, dogs don't care about those things! Only invest in dog food, treats and shampoo. And don't fall for everything veterinarians tell you!

You're not a worrier - we have medical insurance for employees, kids, car insurance, renters and home insurance, all types of insurance, so why not for your pup too? It only makes sense. :) Note on toys: be VERY careful with household objects as toys for puppies! You mentioned socks - some dogs have a tendency to try to swallow and eat things like that. My german shepherd growing up wouldn't swallow anything except for his dog food and socks. So please, reminder to pet parents to be VERY careful about what you teach your puppy is or is not okay to play with.

Congrats on the new pup, Rose! As someone who owned a male dog in the past, I would highly recommend that you get him neutered (or at least plan for the possibility in the future). Although he may be ok as a young pup, it gets very annoying when he tries to "do the deed" with everything in the house once he gets a bit older. Hopefully that doesn't happen with you, but that's what I've typically seen in my experience
I have two males, an Australian shepherd and a sheltie. I do not believe on cutting of their testicles. It is my responsibility as a caretaker to insure they do not impregnate any females. The good lord gave them testicles not to have humans who are too lazy to prevent their companion animals from unwanted behaviours.

Dogs are SO EXPENSIVE. I've had a labrador retriever for 6 years and he has already cost me $1,500 in pet fees whenever I move. He has ear medicine that prevents ear infections which costs $200, and he is also on steroids because he has a condition that makes him itch like crazy. It costs $80 every time I get him groomed, which I could do myself if he wasn't 90 pounds. Lol I could go on.
I have a little dog for about a year now hes my service dog and its definitely way more responsibility and consistent training than most people realize! it's like having a baby and dogs are not alone animals I never leave mine alone he will be extremely depressed . medical costs etc can be hundreds and thousands randomly. the first time fee for a dog even if thousands is nothing compared to the rest of taking good care of animals afterwards . I hope people can be responsible with animals and be ready to have time patience commitment and can dedicate constant training with dogs ! or get a cat if want to be able to put in much less effort . dogs are actually way more high maintence and need more behavioral training and redirection than cats. dogs are way more misbehaving than cats contrary to what most people believe. dogs are prone to chewing, exploring with their mouths , getting into random stuff, barking, potty accidents, exercise, outdoors, etc... there are many quarantine puppies now and I worry that may are going to face issues when they have to go back to work but the dogs have separation anxiety ! get ready to hire sitters or walkers if no one can be with the dog !
It's a little off-putting that your dog will have a higher cost of health insurance then your own.
No one should own a pet if he/she cannot afford the expensive veterinary medical cost. I'm tired of seeing a pet dog on animal rescue RUclips channels with a tumor as large as a bowling ball because its owner can't afford the $2K+ medical bill to have it removed or even worse, the dog is abandoned and is left to die on the streets. I had a Labrador Retriever for nearly 12 years before she died of cancer. Before her death, I had spent $5K for surgery and chemotherapy for her cancer. Fortunately, I had pet insurance that paid 80% of the bill after a $200 deductible. The pet insurance premium was $80 per month during my dog's last year of her life. Before I bought pet insurance, my dog tore her ligament around the age of 5, and that cost me about $3500 for surgery to repair the tear. 4 years later, my dog tore her other ligament but fortunately, I had insurance and they paid 80% of $3500 after a $200 deductible. Later, my dog developed lipomas or fatty tumors which cost nearly $1000 to remove. Yes, having a pet is very expensive especially for the medical cost! Don't get a pet if you can't afford to pay for the medical treatments.
