To lower my grocery bills, I have turned vegetarian 😆. To avoid gym membership fees, I run in nature. To lower subscription fees, I only watch RUclips and Amazon prime video. I get newspaper subscriptions for free through my employer. I have only bought 1 piece of clothes since the pandemic started. My body is very happy, and so is my wallet.

I try to attach some spending with something else. For example, never eat out unless it's with friends (ie. Never buying breakfast or lunch for work), taking a girls trip after hitting saving and investing goals as a trip, buying new gym clothes after reaching fitness goals. I think it also helps motivate myself to reach goals but not depriving myself in the process.

Clothes can be so dangerous! I reached a point where every month I would go shopping and come home with mountains of clothes, thinking they'd make me happy. And I ended up barely wearing them or wanting to wear something else the next month. Nowadays I'll hit an outlet shopping center once a year, get clothes on a discount, and actually wear what I own. So much money saved!

Ironically, without every new gadget I honestly feel like I'm living in the future by living for my future if that makes sense.
The hardest part was programming my thoughts to no longer care about comments family members and people around me make based on assumptions that I don't have much money.

Thanks for making this; I don't think I've seen it addressed before but am experiencing it now. I went to buy a sofa for the first time in my life -- not a big fancy leather thing just a 700 dollar Ikea one --and at the register I was literally sweating beads because it hit me that I was about to spend the most at a check out I've ever spent in my life. I was homeless 15 years ago. The place I lived after that I slept on seat pads on a basement floor. Like you I just had a moment where I realized how different the numbers felt. I told myself I could get the sofa because I've wanted that model for years and I had set money aside for it. I don't worry about how much is in my account most of the time when I get food. Sometimes now if I do have an unexpected expense I still physically freak out and have to talk myself down like "it's ok, you have a savings now, and you can replenish that in a few months...". Sometimes I walk through my neighborhood now and see the nice cars people have and go "man if I could afford that I wouldn't be living here...", I can't see ever spending a lot on a car especially if I had to finance much of it. I'm gonna drive my beater into the ground. For me, I was really torn on whether to keep my apartment without a roommate, that was the hardest decision, still not sure it's right but it's an easy one to change if I want a roommate again. I'm at least still really good at not buying new clothes until I have like ... no option in that category left, and I am a super cheap traveller. I stay in Motel 6, hostels, or camp for 3 reasons: saves my money, i travel with a dog, and I get to stay in super nice hotels from time to time anyway through my work.
PS your hair is sooooo beautiful! Love the colors.

it comes down to this. If you love what you have, you have everything you need. Lifestyle creep is (sometimes) a symptom of not being happy enough in your emotional or spiritual life. Obviously its great to spend money in ways that bring you joy, but if luxuries are becoming the norm, its a problem.

Also, pre-cut veggies often have chemicals on them to stop them from oxidizing that are bad for you, so don't buy them on principle.

I live in San Diego and covid restrictions have begun to loosen up quite a bit. There's also tons of outdoor dining options available and definitely this month I have noticed a serious uptick in my "revenge spending" mainly in my dining out budget category. I've had fun and it feels good to get out and support local restaurants but it also just feels so wasteful considering probably 50% of that money is going towards alcohol. I've committed to making some lifestyle changes and instead of going to restaurants and bars in order to be social, I'm organizing more hiking and beach days. Things that are active and less expensive and kinder to my liver. I haven't nailed it yet, avoiding alcohol in social situations is really challenging, but I'm excited about the progress I'm making. If I could add a #9 to your list it would be "Don't drink your money"

Not sure what it's like in the US, but here in the UK, you would seriously blow your budget if you shopped exclusively at Whole Foods. £2.50 for a mango?! I mean... come on. And you can take it even further - my family have saved loads by moving most of their weekly shop to Lidl and only going to Tesco for things they can't otherwise get. It's pretty much the same food! Anyway, thanks for your awesome content Rose, you're the reason why I'm now investing with the Magic Formula! Would love to see an update on that sometime. All the best :)

Honestly, the kind of life I want is pretty simple. Living out in the country in a little cottage and buying lovely vintage clothes from a thrift store is my go-to lifestyle. For my first car, I’ve already decided I want something that works well yet is still affordable like a Honda Accord or a Honda civic at least to start with. The real problem I’ve been stuck with lately when it comes to getting too comfortable with living a more expensive lifestyle is the little things. It doesn’t seem like much but it adds up. It starts with something little and neat I wanted or just collect in my spare time. I’ve come to the realization recently that those things don’t hold a candle to the goals I want to achieve and to make the mature correct decisions, I need to put those things aside at least for a little while until I can afford them. Thank you for the great tips and for helping me out on my money-saving journey! God bless ❤️

Spending creep for me ended up in more expensive, higher-end alcohol. More expensive wines, more expensive hard liquors, hipster, pre-prohibition style drinks, better beer (or going out rather than a beer at home). And I drank at the same rate I was consuming the cheaper stuff. Now, I don’t abstain altogether, but I only drink with friends and enjoy “the good stuff” slowly in a sitting and once a month tops. Also way better for my health goals, btw. Crazy how spending habits can creep up so quickly.

The only thing I can think of is getting a internet connection. But I'll doubt I'll be doing anything more then I do now. I still buy my groceries in Chinatown for produce anyways. It's so much cheaper then the super markets. Beef is the only thing I buy from the super markets along with Ice cream and snacks. But I usually only stock up with a 2 week supply and try to stretch it out. I don't really buy new clothes only if they start falling apart. So I really watch what I spend, my fear is ending up like my parents who only believed in the old way of thinking that saving up money would make a person successful but the world has changed and that way of thinking doesn't work anymore. BTW like the hair.

I drive to the grocery store once a week. I spend around $100 a year on clothes. Besides cable, I spend about $30 a month on subscriptions. I sure don't look very rich but I'm not paying for their view. No deliveries as I live too far away. We don't have Uber or anything like that. My crappy car is 11 years old now. I've owned it for 6. Good video ! I’m aware of all of these things already. On the cut veggie note : my mom told me last week that we shouldn’t do that (purchase them ) because we don’t know where they cut them and with what knife . She claimed her friend got HIV that way? Not sure . Anyways be careful . For the groceries the easiest thing is to shop off the app and do pick up ! Invest in the gadgets like the air fryer and pressure cookers. Have some items that are quick like pizzas 🍕 for those weekends you don’t want to cook . Like Trader Joe’s has an awesome orange chicken in the bag for $5 and with some white rice , in 10 minutes you have a quick Saturday dinner and frozen pizza for lunch lol , yes I’ve been doing the library for years for Audio ! I get Netflix through T-MOBILE. So like I said , good video !

Totally relate to this video, especially the part about the car! I've never spent more than $3,000 in one place, and that was on a car... which took me all over the US with minimal repairs, and when it started having problems I no longer cared to deal with, I was still able to sell it for $500. Can't imagine trading a year or more of total freedom for a fancy car that I would only regularly drive a few miles to friends, church or the grocery store. Would rather put it in my house/devices that I use constantly, or better yet, invest it to reach financial freedom faster.

:( My city just got Door Dash, and I've been using it because I hate going out to get food sometimes. However, each meal is like $30 because I tip the driver around $8-10 sometimes, not just out of courtesy, but so they won't tamper with my food. Maybe I could just like, buy groceries for when I don't feel like going out? That makes so much sense.

As a delivery driver (mom and pop pizza, not dasher) I can assure you that most people won't bother to tamper with food. It's not worth losing a job over or the few moments wasted to do so. Drivers want to get the food delivered and get the next run. All that said, thank you for tipping well. Soooo many people still feel a $1 or $2 tip is decent while drivers are running our butts off and facing potential covid exposure 20-30 times a day. We all appreciate being treated kindly when a tip is earned :)
