An active sex life
The amount of joy and happiness my dog has brought into my life is immeasurable. She's saved my life in many ways. She is worth every cent I spent on her. I hope this video doesn't stop people from adopting or rescuing pets.
mascara1888..it stopped me. I just can't see the justification of owning a dog unless it's a working dog. Laying around all day, destroying items, cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning the home. Literally revolving your life around it. Constantly spending money just for the dog to die in a few yrs, when I can take that money and invest and allow my money to grow. You consider it worth every penny but I don't. I get gratification from family that's all I need.

@@unstoppableExodia That's assuming that every fish owner already have pond. And not everyone's living in Florida so most of us don't have mosquitoes or year-round warm weather.
Alex Shuysky yeah totally, no disagreements here. It's only in the last couple of years that I've had a place with a pond where I could do that. For most of the time before that I was living in a small rented apartment and the only way I could keep fish or any other small pet was in an enclosure so I know what it's like with that type of scenario where the set up costs are high when you have to buy an enclosure plus everything else and then the ongoing costs such as food and supplements and other consumables in addition to the ongoing maintenance and cleaning required to keep them healthy. Not to mention the possibility of vet bills for people who become very attached and would never dream of writing them off and starting again.
It is a fortunate position that is sadly not available to everyone at any given time.

You guys forgot that, Apartments charge monthly pet rent, usually 20 to $50 a month, and a deposit of 300 and non-refundable fee of 300.
I've never heard of pet rent and I live in an apartment with 2 dogs 👀

Let me break it down for you.
Adoption.... Fuck that. You can pick up a stray (free), or find people who are giving away babies for free.
Food, on your way home from work, go to KFC every night and dig in their dumpster. There’s LOTS of wasted food. When I worked at a restaurant, there was a guy who always came by and asked us for left overs we didn’t want so he could feed it to his dogs. We obliged. Dogs don’t give a shit where the meat/veggies/grain comes from, day old or what not. They’re not prissy like us humans. Food=Free
Grooming, you take a bath, save the water and make doggie take a bath after you. No wasted water! Soap from the dollar store, cheap as hell. A huge gallon of shampoo for a dollar. Will last the dog it’s whole life.
Healthcare, if it gets sick, call it natural selection and go find yourself a new dog. Free! Vets are a big waste of fucking money. They don’t even give a shit about your animal. They’ll make up some bull shit and make you pay big bucks to euthanize it when it could have been saved with an antibiotic. If I ever had to euthanize it, I’d just shoot it. A bullet is $0.85, euthanizing drug is $1000. Highway robbery. If you want to argue the gun is $300, fine, stab it in the neck with a knife from the dollar store and boo ya, same result for $1.00.

The same can be said of a number of non-living hobbies. I've seen people spend 5-6 figures on TCG games or going to casinos or poker tournaments. I'd rather have a pet than that.
OMg thank you. I constantly tell folks I can't afford a dog yet and they laugh it off. But taking proper care of a dog is critical. I made up a budget for a dog and it came out to a little over $2,000 a year. Of course, costs vary depending on where you live.

@@theAppleWizz Of course, I've had dogs. I love dogs. But like I said it depends on where you live the costs. For example, a lot of apartments make you pay rent for your dog (it really depends on where you live though my brother had to a pay a $200 pet deposit instead of a monthly payment which is much cheaper). Training is critical because my dog needs to at a minimum pass the canine good citizen test. Having an emergency fund for your dogs unexpected pet bills and going to regular vet checkups. Quality food that is good for your pet. Toys and supplies for your dog (crates, leashes, pet seatbelts, a travel kit, grooming supply kit, etc.). I'm not saying everyone budget it going to equal out to mine because the size and personality are a factor. However, I don't think my number is that high.
I’d say that’s a pretty accurate representation of what a dog will cost. I own two. I spend around $1,200 per year, per dog, in food and regularly vetting alone. I’ve never kept up with how much I spend on supplies, boarding, etc, however I bet it would make the annual total closer to $1,800 per dog. It is money well spent to me though :)

Food and like 2 vet visits, that’s not even that much especially if you get good food for them. If you cook for your dog boil chicken etc might be a little more too. I think it’s worth the money but that is a component of owning a dog.
I find this video reassuring. I’ve always struggled with quantifying the cost of responsible pet ownership to avoid guilt of neglect. That’s extremely helpful, 18k a year & a 2k emergency fund is absolutely manageable. In comparison to the invaluable companionship & comforting a dog brings, that’s very little.
I have a 3 year old Mini Poodle! He got sick with Parvo before he turned two and cleared my savings account! Please, dogs are NOT Christmas gifts and should be thoughtout almost as much as taking on a child! Seriously! Really enjoyed this video ❤️
Next time get a real dog at the local shelter not a designer dog from a puppy mill or your local flea market.

@@BreannLaFaye There are poodle mixes no one want, but girls think look cute. Not much difference, except they have less health issues and get be adopted for next to nothing.
Parvo vaccinations are more or less mandatory for any dog you get, and they only cost $13 for the shot and booster if you do it yourself.
I have house rabbits, they cost me next to nothing for food as they eat my left over salad (being pescatarian I eat a lot of salad and it saves on waste) the vets cost my £70 a year for there vaccinations for both of them. And I also can forage in the local forest for treats for them. Biggest cost is the amount of electrical cables they chew up. Needed to bunny proof the flat with cable protector because they will chew anything they can get there teeth on but the love I get is totally worth it.

That's a perfect pet, if it's hungry you can also just go outside.

emily williams yeah I have a foraging book I bought specially when I got them, there 5 years old now and they do get Timothy hay mix but I get bulk 1bag can last a year.
david kowalkowski they do go out on the lead with me when I go to the garden but there are lots of fox’s near us so I dont let them roam free. They have a pen outside we use in the summer where they can have fresh grass. I am know as the crazy rabbit man by the local school kids as “dude” my eldest rabbit likes to sit on the window ledge when they walk past cause he gets attention and likes to see wha there doing
I had a bunny too! Hay is so cheap and I buy 15lb pellets for $20 that lasts the entire year.

This is why I have plants. They need only water. And the occasional NPK, which I have more than enough of. Plus, they can even bear fruit, which you can eat ☺️

Honestly, a lot.
Looking at this as a European (so free education and minimal healthcare expenses) you're looking at:
- 1,5k€ in nappies alone
- 50k€ in food (if you home cook everything, don't buy pre-made meals and don't eat out much/at all)
- 50k€ in transport (bigger car, more trips)
- 60k€ in home expenses (bigger house)
- 24k€ in clothes
- ~14k€ in toys and leisure costs
All this gives a total of just shy of 200k€ or 8k€/year to get them to 25 and independent.
A lot of this is back of the napkin based on personal experience with young kids, so YMMV.

A bored and unexercised dog can damage text books, pillow, furniture, clothing, carpet, railings & spindles, their own crate & bedding, shoes and pretty much anything they can reach.
$400 is a pretty conservative estimate even when factoring in dogs that get sufficient exercise and stimulation and training.
The value I get from having a dog completely disregards the money I would spend on my good boy
I bought my cat on Craigslist for $50. Picked him up in a Costco parking lot. Best $50 I’ve ever spent.
I have a cousin who adopted a flamepoint siamese for 75$ in petfinder. He may be cautious, but once he knows you he is the sweetest boy. Never gave a scratch or bite mark, and is very playful. His name is tofu, hes amazing ❤️
I really like the way you broke down how much it costs to own an animal. Most people never think about the ongoing costs of owning an animal… which can be quite expensive. If you don’t make much money then it’s just another thing that’ll make your life harder to afford.
Having a dog is expensive but companionship and love is priceless. I swear my life has changed for the better since he arrived 🐶🥰

I spend 10k on my special needs dog. That was her medical bills. When I adopted this dog, I had no idea I was to become a palliative care nurse to her. Because of this dog, I will never own one again. It was way too much money and stress and the day I had to put her down was the hardest choice I ever made.
So sorry to hear about your experience.
This was the one issue with the video I took exception with. They claimed that getting a dog from a shelter was healthier than getting a dog from a breeder/shop. But when you get a dog from a shelter you have no idea what its medical history could be. And if you buy from a reputable breeder you shouldn't have any problems with the health of the dog.
I've had really loving and positive experiences with dogs from shelters. I hope one day that you get another furry friend and have it much better.
@@WilliamStonerock Define reputable breeder and what exactly that protects you against. I bought my Golden Retriever from a breeder who said that the parents had "hip guarantees". I was 13 so I thought that meant for the life of the animal. It was for 1 year. He developed hip dysplasia when he was 1 year and 1 month old. Any "pure bred" dog is inbred. That's why pure bred dogs have common health problems that they suffer from. A mixed breed dog has significantly more genetic variation and therefore resistance against some of the things that afflict breeds. Shelters like the SPCA will check and treat medical issues & at least the presenting symptoms should be known prior to adoption.
@@nekilof-2363 Reputable means "having a good reputation". Checking a breeder means doing your homework, talking to people, making sure the breeder is licensed, making sure they are members of AKC or ADBA or AAPDB, visiting their kennels to check the condition of the breeding parents, etc.
Dogs are animals, and like any animal subject to birth defects. A reputable breeder will weed out defects and aim to make sure any pups they sell are as healthy as possible. If they don't, it hurts their reputation and they are no longer "reputable" and should be avoided.
Shelters, as you stated, treat PRESENTING problems and usually have no idea of prior medical history or family history of heritable disease. Studies have shown that mixed breeds TEND to, but aren't guaranteed to, have better general health...however this lasts a single generation and significant problems can resurface in later generations. This is where a good breeder would cull defects to make sure they don't pass on. Impossible to do with a "mutt".

Not all dogs damage property, not all dogs need special expensive food, not all dogs get sick (but all dogs can get sick), and some people really go overboard with what they spend on their animals.

I have a cat.
30 pounds of cat food costs about $25 at Walmart. That lasts about 3 months. You can cheap out about buy 50 pounds for that price as well, but they're lower quality foods.
Yearly medical check-ups and vaccinations costs ~$90
30 pounds of good quality cat litter costs $10, and lasts about 3 months if you scoop out the poop regularly.
Toys are optional, but important for indoor cats, and I spend about $50 per year on those.
One time costs are pet carriers, litter box, food bowls, bedding, housings, grooming materials, etc.
First year cost would be around $500, and subsequent yearly costs about $250 - $300, so about $5K over the expected life of the cat.
The cost of owning a pet was never an issue for me. My husband and I did everything we financially could to help save her. It was having to say goodbye when our baby girl was sick was one of the hardest things of my life. For that reason, I am not sure if I could ever see myself owning another pet.

I flippin love this channel. I've seen so many videos on things like this but the way you include the statistics, the mindset of money and average cost, and the overall benefits of the investments you talk about on the show. This channel is what the internet has been wanting for. introducing the concept of foster care for animals as an option for filling the love and needs of people without killing their wallet for the lifetime of the animal.
Could you guys do a video on the cost of adopting a kid? I know that people are always talking about the cost of having a baby, but what are the costs of adopting a person? Like a child/teenager. Thanks! That is another topic that the internet is wanting for.

When my dog needed a minor tooth surgery, I called every vet in a 25 mile radius to price-check the procedure. The most expensive vet in my area charged over $500, and the least expensive vet charged $150. Call around and save big bucks! :)

In where I'm from. Dogs and cats are mostly free of charge. They eat left-over food, catch mice, and if they got sick, they'll die.
That last point - a bit brutal, but a sober view.
I've never understood why my parents refused to keep any pets in the house, but as I grew older I realise the costs do matter A LOT. Companionship is wonderful, but don't be a hopeless romantic who completely ignores reality.

Such a great video! The cost of a dog is something I've been pondering lately, so this video was very timely for me.
What about taking an more expensive Electric car like the tesla model 3 and take and typical priced car (Combustion Engine) and match those up to see whats the real difference. (Since Electric cars need less maintence and are cheaper on fuel, along with Electrics car deduct less in price. This is just an idea if you need some :)

This channel is for basic economical information their out come will be that the model 3 will be more expensive then a used car. True if you look at it from the perspective of saving. but if you look at it from the perspective of a 45K new car vs a model 3 the model 3 will be cheaper.

I own 6 dogs and they are super expensive, esp because 2 of them are English Bulldogs (both rehomed to us). When people ask how we afford it, I always joke and say we don't take vacations. We also keep savings to help cover unexpected vet expenses. They are a commitment that you have to be willing to take on. I love all my dogs and wouldn't trade them for anything.
The real question is; Can you be as happy or happier without a pet? What about children?
If you're trying to justify a cost, then these are valid questions. What could have that money gone towards otherwise?
I imagine a lot a people would rely on fallacies and/or sentimentality to justify their answer, but there are countless examples of people living very fulfilling lives without either.
Can you put a price on love? Unless you're a hopeless romantic, yes. Some people are more emotionally co-dependent than others.
As long as you're happy and not hurting anyone else, you do you.
Based on their estimates my cost would be around $6700, since I don't board them and all the animals I've had combined didn't create $400 in damage over their lifetimes, much less in a single year.
yeah, when I saw their cost for damages per year my first thought was "wouldn't it be cheaper to just train them not to do that!?"

We got our pup for $25.00 a beautiful lab mix. A month later we were $1,600 in the hole! She got sick and the vet couldn't figure out her virus type. Just antibiotics and hope; she recovered. Also, cost of toys, crate, bed, food, more toys.
My dog isn't an investment...? She's a friend, I'm happy to pay for her stuff.
Before I watch let's just see how I compare:
50 a month for food.
50 a month for grooming (husky)
25 a month for ropes, fencing and general toys.
20 a month for vet visits.
So 150.
That is without initial costs and special needs in old age. The total cost will be way more than 30k.

Finite Wehosh Fair enough - however don‘t forget to put the cost for the bullet, the upkeep of the gun and cleaning on the total bill. ^^
@@MetallicReg The gun is it's own separate maintenance cost not tied to the dog. It's like owning and maintaining tools fo rauto repair or home maintenance. The big thing with my dog is the cost of grooming. Huskies shed like a mother fucker.

What pet requires 2 hours a day for hygiene (or even just care in general)? I have a guinea pig and wash the cage once a week. For dogs you have to take walks but I think that time can be shorter than 2 hours total and still meet the dogs need (a bit depending on type of dogs). With cats you may need to take the cat litter somewhat regularly but 2 hours sound a bit much having actually lived with them, Id guess it takes like 30 minutes without hurrying. Maybe something like a horse requires that much time for cleaning the stable
@@zakosist I have cat (and also chicken), I clean the litters everyday, play string with cat for 15 minutes, clean the water & food bowl everyday, vacuum the floor or clean the tray under their cage every 2 week (or everyday for chicken), and find and retrieve cat that play outside everyday. Why so tedious with cleaning? because fleas and worm infestation happen before when I was much relaxed, now I'm keeping them clean. Now I found fungus infestation.... 😩, sigh...unfortunately I don't feel like I have any spare time to shower these cats with shampoo ... for now I just treat them with fungal medication. (I shampoo my hair everyday of course! 😅 )
@@xponen Okay I would simply not bother with all the extra cleaning you do (still do the basics). And cats are not supposed to be bathed anyway, if not in some really special circumstance like we had one cat that jumped into a bucket of diesel.

hahaha you do know that you can put a down payment on a house with only 3% down right? example a 200,000k house will cost $6,000 Know if you are making 20K a year that would not be the best move. but if you are making a 60K a year or around 4,000 after taxs your mortgage payment will be 1,347.14 with the PMI (a insurance because you did not pay 20% down) which is 80.83 a month after 9 year you stop paying that $80.83 there is no reason to not buy a house if you have the income you do not need to save that much upfront
+PointyNipples -- If that $18,000 is a 10% down payment, that house costs $180,000. What the hell kind of mansions are you trying to buy that make a $180,000 home seem "cheap"?
I dropped a $4000 down payment on my $80,000 house. Cost of living is MUCH more affordable outside of major cities. Even if you're looking for something in a city, you can still find decent homes for that price.

I agree with you on every video but certainly there are few things money can’t buy. Pets are loyal and they give you some sort of mental stability. Cannot be compared in monetary value.

As a dog owner I think these numbers are way overblown. I spend no money replacing broken things because he doesn't break thing, I spend no money on sitting because he is fine at home when I am away for less than 24h and I am rarely away longer than that--There is family to watch him when I am.

These are AVERAGE numbers calculated. For every person like you that doesn't spend anything, there are people that spend thousands. I know people that spend hundreds per month just on daily dog walkers and sitters alone.

Pet insurance is such a good idea!!! Both my parents are vets, so I know how much $$$ vet bills can be-all my pets have insurance, just in case. Also consider that due to inbreeding purebreds are generally more unhealthy that a mutt from the shelter. tAdopting from a shelter is also way less costly that buying from a breeder.

Before I clicked on this video, just based on the style of the vid and how these guys talk, I knew I just KNEW they would use the term "furry friend(s)" and just over a minute in and there it is.
I've never got a pet from a shelter that didn't have serious health issues. I feel like that's one of the main reasons people drop their pet off. Though it never has stopped me from adopting.
Most people don't pay boarding costs nor have to replace $400/year every year of ownership. That's not even an average number. This seems to be using outliers for the numbers. If you include ownership costs of extremely wealthy people, sure, maybe those numbers are closer to the truth, but how many people are extremely wealthy? You could do the same for cost to raise children, but that would not present an accurate picture of reality.
Adoption costs nearly as much purchasing from a breeder nowadays. My dog, a pure bred Shetland Sheepdog, was about $800. To adopt a dog costs, on average where I live, about $650. That number increases if the dog is a more desired breed.
I don't want to discourage what's being done with this channel, but presenting a completely unrealistic situation by WAY overestimating costs is just as useless as underestimating the costs.
For real. Most of the 'cost' can be be subtracted by training your dog yourself and put time into it to make it a balanced dog

Just depends on your location. I've lived in places, like Tacoma/Seattle, WA where they want at least a few hundred at the shelter, and places like Bossier City, LA where it's usually 50-80.
My Chihuahua cost me £5 a month
