Post Office Scandal: Paula Vennells describes complaining subpostmasters as 'noise'

  • Paula Vennells said she “regrets” using the word “noise” in association with complaints launched by subpostmasters about the Horizon IT system.
    Asked at the inquiry into the scandal if “noise” was what complaints were seen as at the top end of the Post Office, Ms Vennells said: “No, and I’m sorry it is not a good word but you have also seen how I have responded personally to other individual matters.
    “It is a word I regret using.”
    Asked if it reflected the “workings of the minds” of those at the top of the business, Ms Vennells said: “I think it reflects a wrong understanding yes that people believed that Horizon worked and this is me deploying a word that was unwise.
    “I did not in any way mean that I personally did not take seriously issues when they got to me.”

      Well said ! How can categorising their issues as noise be in same breath be taken to be true whilst “taking the issues seriously” . Really ?!?!!! It beggars belief she expects anyone to believe the formulaic statement of “I took it seriously” . The only “taking it seriously” aspect was to remind managers these issues should not be allowed to be heard - the exact opposite of her statement.

Especially when she had no idea what was really happening or chose to ignore through her ignorance and arrogance.The millions she was paid for destroying the post Office is unbelievable. She and those that allowed this to happen should serve jail time and pay reparation to those that suffered because of her actions This is absolutely horrendous.

    I think the problem is that she still does not understand what an accounting system is supposed to do. And neither do the Courts having convicted so many on hearsay.

    • @heliotropezzz333
      @heliotropezzz333 4 месяца назад +5

      Apparently the Horizon system was not an accounting system but a database which is one of the reasons for some of its problems. It wasn't a fit for purpose system and Fujitsu never consulted end users in creating the system. The Post Office should have insisted on that. At some point she knew that the Horizon system had flaws because the Post Office itself hired 'Second Sight' , in July 2012, to look into it and then sacked them when they reported the flaws. The P.O. didn't want to know. She didn't want to know.

    Unfortunately this is not a trial, but an inquiry, so the barrister asking the questions is hindered by 'parliamentary privilege', in other words he's got his hand tied behind his back. This explains why these 'executives' can get away with - I can't recall etc. Their 'legal team' had a specific strategy of preventing any kind of adverse litigation against them from the postmasters. It was and still is very cynical.

    Hope that the KC asks more questions about what this ‘understanding that the system worked’ was based on regarding Horizon’s integrity. Who tested it? What were their qualifications? Who did they work for? And what did they find out? To whom did they report? These matters need to be nailed down, so that the facts are known. The sub-postmasters have a right and need to know.

The plight of the Sub PO's was an internal matter that could be dealt with, or so she believed! After all the POST OFFICE COULD TAKE THEM TO COURT WHERE THEY ACTED AS PROSECUTION , JUDGE AND JURY! Which in turn gave her and her staff a high and mighty attitude towards these SubPO's and a refusal to even enter any discussions as to the validity of the Horizon system!

    She says that she loved the post office, and just wanted it to be as good as possible. Which raises questions about motivation. When she said she wanted it to be as good as possible - by what standards? In whose eyes? Just saying you want something to be good is a motherhood statement - meaningless. At the very least she must have had some sort of targets against which she was measuring her performance - what were they? One suspect that whatever they were, doing the right thing by subpostmasters would have hurt her chances of achieving those targets.
    For organisations to function well usually involves people having their "hearts in the right place". A good leader makes it perfectly clear where their heart is, and that makes it easy for everyone in the organisation to know what to do and how to behave. And when people don't behave accordingly, a good leader reminds them of what is expected. So many in POL behaved badly, which must surely be a reflection on the leadership.

    Psychopaths are very cunning and crafty. Paula Vennells knows exactly what she's doing, using manipulation and deflecting responsibility off herself and rather unto others.
