What a fantastic interview!! Seeing Jill's struggles and how she came through them. My daughter had no interest in football, April 2021 she went to football club at school to try it and loved it. She then joined a local girls team and really enjoyed it. Everyday she went into school, she had boys telling her she shouldn't play football, she's rubbish at football, they wouldn't let her join in with football as she was the only girl who wanted to. She used to get quite upset by it, but kept going. However 12months later, she asked to stop playing as she didn't enjoy it anymore. I can't help but feel all these comments and bullying from boys at school contributed to her stopping playing.
So sad that mate I've had a similar experience my daughter is 4 and loves playing football and is always playing in the garden. I picked her up from after school club and she was stood at the side watching. I asked why she wasn't playing and she said they wouldn't let her I was heartbroken for her because that's all she wants to do. I have to be honest though I'm 37 and thinking back to when I was a kid no girls ever wanted to play football with us but I think if they did we'd have all probably said the same that girls are rubbish and can't play football it seems to just be what we're told from a young age. It's sad really and I'm glad to see it's changing slowly but surely. Keep encouraging your daughter mate as I will with mine if they want to play they can play. All the best.
Great work Gary. This may not get as many views as other editions of the Overlap but it is easily in your top three. Very insightful and candid. Do keep these coming, the variety is certainly welcomed.
I am glad that my daughter has female sport role models at 6yrs old and i love that they empower belief. If my daughter has the attitude and kind persona as Jill Scott I'll be a very proud Dad. Men's football needs to watch and learn from these England lionesses. 🇬🇧
love Jill and great interview, it gives people a real insight to how hard the ladies have to work to achieve and have credibility. good on you never give up and young girls or boys to achieve and follow your dreams
I love the overlap as always but I think is an important episode and probably one of the best you’ve ever done. I really enjoy the relaxed / getting to know the person interview style Gary brings, he is superb as always and it just goes to show what an inspiration to young girls Jill Scott is, she comes across as a really nice person. To be honest I was getting a bit tired of seeing her on TV and I don’t particularly enjoy the amount that the media is thrusting women into punditry on the men’s game at the moment. However this episode has changed my opinion on that and given me more respect for what she went through to get where she is now, I think sometimes you need someone you respect to open your eyes to things and I think Gary is doing that here with this episode, I also didn’t know about his mother or sister so this is obviously a cause he believes in. Every young girl should have the chance to play football at school, I never understood why there was a girl in my class who could not be selected even though she could dribble past half the male squad we had at the time (1998 aged 12) Respect to you both 🙏
"Failure is a bruise not a tattoo" I love that idea and saying. I will definetly intertwine that phase into my leadership interactions with my people. Great interview,
One of the best episodes yet, absolutely loved it! As a coffee lover who is 30mins away from Manchester I will be heading out there to see if it’s as good as you make it out to be as well.
More women footballers at the new season kicks on would be great too gary. The overlap is one of the best and you are the best host for this. Im a Liverpool fan and i like you more gary 😂 you can let carra know that
Which male players are below her? By the way, I really like her. Great role model for kids and just a lovely girl. But come on! The worst male player in League 2 is 10 times better than her
@@Chris-jy3el dude watch Crawley town, I have seen Jill Scott trap spin and pass the pass pin point 50 yards under pressure. I would definitely take her over some of this lot.
I dislike Gary Neville as a commentator with a passion, but since watching him host The Overlap, I have found a bit more respect for him. His recent mental health interview with Dele Alli was ground-breaking, & this interview with Jill Scott is just as eye-opening. Much more must be done to promote equality between mens & womens football, not just for us, but for future generations of Lionesses.
There were no girls teams when I was young, there was a girl in my school football team and it was a good team, a couple ended up pro, 1 even played for England She was excellent but she wasn't allowed to play in cup games, she ended up being no 1 uk tennis player. Girls like her made the pathway even before Jill and co.
❤ Brilliant interview Jill is a legend hopefully no female coming though now will have to fight to play football and fingers crossed the wages go up for them as well they deserve it

It is weird in school in the 80s/90s it was just accepted the girls play netball and the boys play football.
That isn't true we had girl football teams all through school in my area but it depends where you lived I suppose. Girls and women always had teams.
