I really like how you don’t put people down for using some of the cheaper parts and kits and you just do your best to make them work….not everyone can afford top notch parts

Want to thank you for catching that problem. The owner is lucky you're willing to go that extra mile.
Personal story and why I chose to comment. 6 years ago now, I bought an eg hatch from a "race shop". The owner worked there. I was looking for just a clean shell at the time and they had just blown a motor on the dyno and were looking to get rid of the shell.
I asked for a price on a rebuild and seeing as it was going to cost roughly the same for me to build it myself, I trusted the "race shop" to do it for me.
Really long story short, it never idled on startup (blamed it on cold start, which I assumed you tune for) - it over boosted a bunch (I replaced every component of the ebcs. Literally everything, wiring, vacuum lines, the controller itself). Took it back and the tuner checked a box off in the aem software that fixed the issue.
Overheated since the day I brought it home, (they said being a css block it was normal) I figured at 235 degrees it wasn't normal. But they said it was. Limped it up to the track to keep the temps under 225. Injector popped out on the highway and spewed fuel all over the engine bay. I fixed that on the side of the road, found 1 nut hold the rail that was backed off. Then the clutch slipped at the track for every run.
Got home and the next day, decided to check the head gasket. As I'm taking it apart. The timing was off by 2 teeth.
I decided to never trust people like that again. I took some HPA courses. Before you tune any car you need to verify mechanical timing so that your ecu timing is correct.
Needless to say, a piston had a hole in it, the cylinder head was pitted with metal and the head gasket had failed.
I've gone through the entire car and replaced just about everything because it was mickey moused. It's taken me a long time to do but I don't want to deal with any problems.
Hunter has mentioned it before, but go over your car before you bring it for a tune. You don't have to spend all the money on the best parts to make power, but what's the point in spending any money if you have no oil, coolant or your timing is off?

God bless man for not giving up. I know many tuners will not go this far to find car problems. They will just say go fix it and come back.

No tuners in my area absolutely are no where close to your diligence in getting a customers car set up mechanically and then tuned....no one in my area does that....car has few issues they will not help....send the customer on their way to deal with it...or charge a customer arm and leg to fix it😢

Great video Hunter. I love the content. It probably would take some of the fun away from the whole experience of the troubleshooting and overcoming, but maybe something worthwhile for you to do for yourself and your customers, just make a checklist of all the things you promise you will do for each customer car that shows up to make sure is done before they show up, or the customer wants you to look after. Oil change, fuel filter change, known injectors, fuel injectors flow balanced, fuel pressure set, new BKR7E pre gapped to 0.025, cam timing set, valve lash, etc

Rad bro .. nice catch ... I'm fighting manifold backpressure myself .. think it's time to stray from ole reliable cast and get a tubular , so I can have better flow and less back pressure = more powaaaaaa lol ... I trying to find a friend right now with a b series honda , cuz I believe I can use the b16 turbo manifolds on my 1.6 miata engine , only mod is to slot the center hole up , cuz on mazda its about mid runner but only center bolt rest are top and bottom , but also the manifolds are way way cheaper for honda than for the mazda for some dang reason (and Hondas ones look better imo 😅) but yea bro .. lo e the content .. peace and love all keep it rad stay safe and build on..l8z famz and keep having fun

Running waste gate on manifold is bad practice. Yeah it works. But it should be sourced off the compressor housing or as close to it as possible. I get it you didn’t build it and you did a good job as usual. Just too many people making that mistake !

Hunter, I currently have a journal bearing precision turbo with a -4an feed line, no restrictor. Also a high pressure oil pump with oil pressure reading 90psi.. The new precision starting seeping oil out of the cold side after only a month and I figured too much oil pumping through. I installed a Vibrant oil restrictor a couple weeks ago and haven't seen any more oil but I'm worried I could be starving the turbo.
First question: How could I tell if the turbo is getting too little oil, if there is any way to actually tell..?
Second: Would you think this is a good time to use a restrictor or still no restrictors on journal bearing turbos at all?
Thanks for the videos dude I always love them!

    • @HunterTuned
