    I suggest you do some research before making a comment like this. If you had done research you would've found that we've ALWAYS sold drum lessons as well as launched free lessons on RUclips. That will never change. We will always do both. We have two main Drum Lesson RUclips channels, which have over 500 FREE videos combined. Drumeo is our premium membership website which costs money and there is nothing wrong with that.
    Have a nice day!

    Great lesson, thanks a lot!
    What helped me was Dave playing German/American Grip. I had questions about that which you answered in this video!
    Well, all of that answers and explanations were so helpful. Now I know what I'll be practicing for at least the next few weeks :)
    HUGE Thanks!

    I drove two bolts into my practice pad so they stick up about 2 inches above the top of the pad and have about 2 inches between them, bringing my stick up and down between them with my rudiments drastically increased my control

    These videos are so dang cool! I have this sneaking suspicion that most of us weren't taught these basic stick control skills. I know I wasn't. The band director where I went to high school wasn't a drummer and finger control was never part of beginning snare drum class. Or intermediate and advanced snare drum, either. A lot of bad habits could have been avoided had there been videos like this when I was starting to learn to play drums in 1979.

    I have been playing for over 10 years and I actually found this video pretty helpful. Learn something new every day. I have some songs from my band posted up (not recorded to a metronome, we were raw back then), but good nonetheless, and a video of me getting a warm up. My only problem is my muscle stamina. I recently joined a death metal band that requires a lot of blast beats and whoa... it's killer trying to keep up with that pace. The finger exercise will help tremendously.

    Hi Dave and Jared, I started learning to play the drums late in life. My studies are based on the tutorial books and lessons from videos like this and not in a class with an instructor. I sometimes feel that self-taught musicians are looked down upon by society and "can never be as good" as those who have mentors or is missing out on techniques that are taught in class. Is it right to think or feel that way? Thank you for all you do.

    for example practice 5 days out of the week and rest 2 or is it better to practice everyday

    Play traditional grip. Guy to your left lower your pad at naval level. The hand that you find weak,work it out the most through various exercises. Mostly with inverted triple-diddles and double doodles. Exercise that weak hand like there's no tomorrow.

    It depends on how much you practice each of those 5 days. If you're doing an hour a day, five days a week, then I think you could benefit from at least one day off in between to let your muscles recharge.

    Will it actually affect finger control?

    Hey Jared, I am currently only 16, but have a question, is it possible to sign up to be a teacher on Drumeo, or become a part of Drumeo's staff? I love drumming, LOVE teaching and am still -of course- working today to build my drumming to its peak. I know 16 is waay to young to become part of the staff but sometime I would love to join you guys over at Drumeo and practice, and teach and best of all learn form each other. Thanks man, these lessons are much appreciated. -Mike.

REALLY struggling with it though. Should the sticks be be parallel like jared has them or diagonal like dave? Or is this because of the different grips?

    I feel my fingers r loose when practicing finger control however I feel a tiny bit of tension...is this natural? I'm guessing if there is no tension near the fulcrum the stick would go flying everywhere!

    Hey Dave and Jared. I have a question, you guys said that when first developing the motion of the fingers the stick will try to slip out of your grip. So, is it normal as well that the stick kind of rotates between my finger? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks a lot for the video guys

    • @BOOM8883
      @BOOM8883 8 лет назад

      Is normal, if you use a good practise method it will go away.

    • @sebastianospina4599
      @sebastianospina4599 8 лет назад

      Thank you very much. But, what exactly is a good practice method? Besides, you know, gripping your sticks correctly

    • @BOOM8883
      @BOOM8883 8 лет назад

      If you have a drum teacher you should have him check your progresssion with this technique every once in a while. If not, make sure the motion is the same in both hands. Its also better to practise slow and focused rather than try you fastest. Good luck :)

    • @BOOM8883
      @BOOM8883 8 лет назад

      Oh and also when youre working on fingers make sure your wrist stays completely still. Switching between french and german grip helped me achieve this.

    • @sebastianospina4599
      @sebastianospina4599 8 лет назад

      Thanks man! I try to focus on the motion to be the same in both hands using my leading hand as a "role model" for the other one, but I try always to play more with my weaker hand. For instance, one bar of 16th notes with my right (leading hand) and 4 bars of 16th notes with my left, I pay attention if the motion is similar to the right hand and make corrections during the exercise. But there is when the slippery rotating nightmare begins!
