www.FreeDrumLes... - In this video lesson, I talk about how to develop your finger technique on the practice pad. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me at jared@railroadmedia.com.
Do it along to a click, too. This means you work on keeping it tight and can progressively build up your speed while staying in control.
Excellent advice.........
At 47 i am playing..(.loose term) drums for 30 years or more ..I hit a brick wall aboyt 20 years ago when i just couldnt get any speed ....Not many drum teachers tell u about the finger technique, they just say practise..i gave up till i saw this
honestly one of the best teachers ive come across.
Tons of great advice, great advice. Tons of speed. Great tips. Great video. Overall great.
Ok.
Are you sure it isn’t tons of “great” speed?

simple as that
Jared's gaze is a mind control technique to get people on Drumeo. It worked.
Aaaaaaahahahaha
Lol my thoughts exactly. I'm hypnotized
Glad you like it...Keep practicing!
Great clip. Very natural, honest teacher. Seven minutes well spent!
Thank you so much for this. I've been playing for 3.5 years but never sat myself with a practice pad to just improve my sticking. Those little tips are actually helping my improve a lot in my weaker areas. Thanks again.
Your techniques and tutorials are awesome.. I have been drumming for the past 27 years and I still enjoy your videos!
Hey Jared! I know you probably hear this often, but I want to thank you... A month ago I started to practice your excercises and finally, I see results! Before I started, I thought it is going to be boring, but right now (and I still don't understand, how this happened) I love it and I enjoying practicing and watching my progess. THANK YOU FOR THIS!
I was just watching something on Drumeo, and thought, didn't I watch a video of that same guy like FOREVER AGO of him on a pad at his day job. You've come a long way, sir. Congrats!
thanks jared and thanks for all these years, you dont me but ive known you for quite a time now!
great stuff. always looking for new techniques for drumming
Another great video Jared. You are near-single-handedly teaching me the drums.
“It’s rarely used like this...” death metal drummers: 🤔
Yeah. Try to blastbeat at 220bpm from your wrist and you'll know why this is usefull 😂
Great explanation of the technique... It's good to see that you take your time explaining all those different stuff that beginners experience, but most people leave out when showing it.
Thanks for the free video buddy,Just got a practice pad and i know this will really help me.Thanks again.
Paul
Excellent technical exercises and your speed is awesome thank you for sharing !!
If there's a thing i'm not good in with drumming. It's this. Thanks for the lesson. I'm sure it will help.
one of the best drumming teachers
You have caught the definitive spirit of finger bounce execution! I first read about this in George Lawrence Stones book written long ago and dedicated to the incomparable talent Joe Morello. Thanks for the insightful lesson. I am grateful.
Fantastic video, I have search for a lot of technique training videos & this one is the clearest & easiest to follow, thank you
SO HELPFUL! I'm doing it right now during halftime of the football game
Thanks, Jared! I've been learning to get more finger control in order to speed up my rolls. I have been practicing to strengthen my left hand (my right hand is fine, but with my left hand it feels really awkward) and I was close to quitting. I didn't even know if I was doing it right or if my practice was correct, but after seeing this video I'm really going to dive into it again. Thanks! Keep up the good work!
Jared your show is great it's Helpful for Beginners I wanna learn from you.
Very good video from one of my favorite drummers
Brilliant Lesson Jarad
WOW !!!! I Don't know what to say....I am 67 years old GOAT.... All I could say is I was moved when you said, "I am still practicing, I don't claim to be perfectly trained, We all need to continue practicing. We all are continually learning...... Chose to practice or you are finished"...... The Best Drummers in the world... Tom & George.... they know every thing....but when you ask & they all say, "No I am still practicing"....... The Best was..... "Chose to practice or you are finished"!!!!!..... Well said (Y) &.... Regarding the video... WELL DONE (Y) (Y) (Y) (Y) (Y) ... Keep Posting. You are already Subscribed. Thank you for sharing.
Great teaching and advice. Get right to the point, practical and focused, for all drummers, any level. Thank You!
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Just like guitar, you put the hard work in and it pays off... eventually!
Thanks Jared, its good to see where hours of practise get you when you need a boost!
Thank you Jared. This video helped a lot.
Great exercise man!!! Just getting back into drumming after not playing for 20 years. Of course the left hand got really slow. This is just what I've been looking for to help that speed!! As the previous comment, most instructor don't talk about finger techniques. This is the best!! Thanks so much!!
Cool, was really a lot of help cheers Monty from London
This is a great lesson. I am a big Keith Carlock fan and he discusses finger technique from a traditional grip standpoint. The principal is the same. Jared teaches this technique just as Keith Carlock does. The difference is that Jared stresses the point that patience is required. He is realistic about how long it takes to get this technique. Keith doesn't (I don't think) talk about how long it took (or it takes) to get this to the point he has. Still, two great teachers and one great technique.
thanx man. started this now.i can tell its really gonna improve my drumming. thanx for the drum lesson man
Thank you.....one of the best motivation for me.....great
wonderful flawless technique, Jared! It really accentuates your economical movement relying on finger bounce execution! I'm gonna start practicing this tonight. THX!
i was taught this technique years ago we called it stone killer start with 1 - 10 then 10 hits with each stick back single strokes. its a fantastic technique. I've been drumming for 15yrs but have only just started playing again after 7yrs always good to go back to these exercises.
Good lesson Jared. I've been working on that for months now and it's just starting to gel now. I have a practice pad on a stand and it's in front of me while I watch TV. Why just watch TV when you can be doing both. Rock on.
I have been looking for a good finger technique video to start practicing this helped alot thanks
thanks so much for providing a systematic approach. it is easier for me to practice when the exercise is systematic.
Your an awesome teacher.
heey thank you man! you know, i've been playing drums for almost 7 years and i'd never used this kind of technique! it's difficult but pretty nice
thanx man. look forward to trying this technique. just got a practice pad so i can practice all the time. I work in a restaraunt and find myself practicing with knives at work! hahaha. this seems to work well on ride cymbals and hihats and such too. good stuff!
4 a beginner lik me, such a lesson is jus awsum!
thnx mate! :D
Awesome stuff Jared! Those singles sound amazing at speed. Everytime I try to use a prac pad I get annoyed and frustrated with how weak and consistent my left hand is, but I just gotta stick out out!
First time I saw this technique was from Dave Weckl, tried it a few times, but never had the patience to practice it. I've been at if seriously now for about two weeks after playing drums for roughly 36 years. Absolutely fantastic chop building, confidence enhancing exercises. Glad to see that I have been practicing correctly. Thanks, Jared for sharing this video, been receiving your emails for about two years, and never watched any of your videos, I think I'll start now. :-)
Jesus this has increased my speed and accuracy the most out of any exercise I've done. Thanks!
thanks for the tips, it is helpful for a beginner !
You explain that so much better than my drum teacher. I'll have to try your way.
Mate your little lessons are perfect. Great inspiration to keep practicing!
Very helpful. Thanks Jared.
I like the exercises, it'll make practicing fingers a lot more entertaining!
Cheers.i have learnt a lot from your videos.
@SuperDRUMZONE I've been using it for about 1 year and a half, and it gets better and better, I almost couldn't do it at first with my left hand, but now my left hand is much more solid than my right hand with the finger technique. I can pretty much go to 250-260 bpm(16th notes both hands combined)
this is AWSOME thanks jared!
Thank you for this helpful video. God bless you Jared.
Jared tells it like it is, this is a good thing.
Dude, you have got some crazy awesome concentration XD
I am just starting to play drums and I think this will be very helpful to me. Thanks a lot!
Awesome lesson thanks for sharing it with us Jared
Didnt work on my trainers but its fantastic when you get it!! Thanks to Jarad Falk.
Hay Jerrard....always enjoy your vids man, thanks so much for posting them...appreciated !

My left hand was not active and dead but these practice tech helped me a lot, Thnx so much
Your an awesome teacher
The same exercise I was taught years ago in snare class. Good stuff!
You're right... I'm doing that for a week and i have already noticed how better I'm getting at it
thanks Jared this has helped me so much
Just amazing!
Thank you for your lessons
That's not just about teaching technique, it's convey passion and courage
I'd like to see you on the stage as well as a professional drummer
2:27 "Stick" it out hahahahahahahahaha
It's beginning to work for on my right hand! I give it a little squeeze at the second knuckle.
Thank you mate! you are very helpful for beginners :)
I've been playing the drums for 15 years, I don't mean to blow my own trumpet but I can handle a drum kit quite well. I'm even a singer/drummer albeit perhaps a better singer. That being said I've never relied too much on speed in my style but rather power and accuracy, I had a couple of drum lessons and nobody ever mentioned the finger technique. I love metal and have actually managed to blast beat using my wrists! It's exhausting and strainful and I then realized something was wrong. I've come across many tutorials that don't explain how to do the basics. They all boast about how easy it is and I really struggle with it. Thanks for reminding how much time is required to use fingers accurately and to gain speed. I've been practising for a day almost non-stop, alternatively using my right and left hand - It's something I've always done with paradiddles and stuff like that. Could you however explain whether or not our thumbs should stay parallel to the stick or not? I've noticed your thumb was slightly lifted up but when I do that my thumb seems too stiff and I can't hit it any faster.
LOUDSTEEL it being parralell means thats ur grip.jareds way of gripping is different hence why his thumb is up om the stick.i have the same grip that u use.so ur grip is fine it just takes getting used to
Amazing video thank you. Your video is by far the best explained on this technique and how to do it and build it. I've been trying to figure this out forever. So thank yoy
great job, man! keep practice
this guy is just great
I have been playing for 50 years and have very good technique and just started this finger technique. I STRONGLY recommend heavy aluminum sticks and your results will improve by the day. I've almost doubled my speed in 3 days.
Brilliant advice.
good Bless You , man !
Nice work. Thank you man.
you make my day thank you!
Thanks Jared. Ive been playing these techniques and man do they work great. Keep up the vids.
Haha I giggle 'cause I think this is ridiculously hard, but I have never been practicing on it. I will sure get started with it anyway and really appreciating you took your time to make this video so thank you!
THANKS FOR SHARING!
This was a very good teaching movie, it was a lot of help to me, thank you very much! :)
Never thought to practise it going from groups of 3 to 7, cheers for the tip!
hey dude, liked this exercise a lot!! i have trouble with my left hand, (thumb) after a car accident, and have been looking for a way to build this technique in to a routine as such. i think with practice etc this will be great for me, only found this by accident as well, lol!! have a good day dude, and keep it up!!
Sooooo helpful thanks for the lesson just starting to speed up with it.
