    How to Fuse Plastic Bags for Art Projects
    Fusing plastic bags is a simple, fun, and eco-friendly way to repurpose discarded plastic into durable, versatile material for creative projects. Here’s how:
    1. What You Need: Gather plastic bags, an iron, and parchment paper (a roll works best for larger coverage). The parchment prevents the plastic from sticking to the iron.
    2. How to Fuse: Layer several plastic bags, place parchment paper on both sides, and set your iron to a low heat. There should be no burning smell, smoke, or fumes-if there are, lower the heat. Flip and heat both sides repeatedly until the plastic fuses flat.
    3. Get Creative: Use your imagination! Fused plastic is perfect for making book covers, pouches for art supplies, folios, and other creative projects. Cut shapes, layer colorful patterns, or incorporate interesting text or designs from printed plastic for unique effects.
    4. Scaling Up: Start small-work in manageable pieces. To create larger sheets for bigger projects, simply fuse the edges of your sheets together.
    5. Eco-Friendly Tip: With fewer plastic bags available, explore other options like bread bags or food packaging.
    This process is fun, addictive, and full of possibilities! Experiment, play, and let your creativity guide you. If you make something, I’d love to see it-tag me when you share it. For more inspiration, visit www.karenmichel.com.

    Wow so this is how it's done!! I bought a purse at an auction for charity, created by some people in an African village, that was created using plastic grocery bags (from what I was told) years ago. It baffled me as to how, and I couldn't even think of how it must have been done. I didn't even think to look it up on the internet. Your video popped up on my feed, and because of that artsie looking bag, I decided to watch and listen. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. Now, I need to find videos of people actually using this creatively, just to see it in action.❤ I see that you have some, so I will watch yours too. 😊
    Thanks for sharing, now my curiosity is finally satisfied.

    May want to think about getting a dedicated iron, possibly 2nd hand, for this process. You can also do this with foil food bags.

      Fused plastic is an incredibly versatile material, and you can use it for all kinds of creative and functional projects! It’s durable, waterproof, and easy to work with. Some ideas include book covers, pouches for art supplies, wallets, folios, or even travel scissor cases. I actually made a travel scissor case in one of my videos, which you can check out here: ruclips.net/video/Se8pMEZneM0/видео.html.
      The possibilities are endless-fused plastic is like creating your own unique, upcycled fabric! Get creative, experiment, and let your imagination guide you.

    Re: ink sticking, for layers you sandwich between other bags, where the design isn’t needed in the final product, would turning the bags inside out help?

    If parchment paper gets too covered in ink or doesn’t as affective after repeated uses, what do you do with them?

      paint & stamp on it and use it for collage paper. Or include it in a bookbinding art journal project.

    Is this safe? Does the plastic release any fumes when heated?

    • @karenmichel
      @karenmichel  6 месяцев назад +3

      As long as you keep the heat low- It fuses at a surprisingly low temperature. If there's toxic smoke the temperature is too high lol.
